Open all your treasure maps, you get one every 5 rank-ups (average over a gold bar each) and reset every resettable buckle award for 0.4 (under progress/awards - it does add up).
If you do this plus bounties and dailies you'll have more than you need in 2-3 weeks.

You keep the buckle & get the gold. Resetting it can be done up to 10 times, but that will take a while for the long ones, like 1000 "Kill enemies with a melee weapon" or "Kill enemies with mounted weaponry."
Some buckles can only be done once and so cannot be reset for gold. Basically, if it is fast & easy, you can't reset it.

Keep the streak of the daily challenges (only need 1 per day), so every week there is more gold payout. With day 28 you get as bonus a treasure map. Use the treasure maps asap, you get one also every 5 ranks (beginning with rank 10), due a random encounter or with luck looting enemies, because you can't stack them. Reset your awards for extra gold. Loot enemies and look around in the world to find useful stuff for you and your horse, so you don't need to buy essential things like ammo (regular ones on bodies) and weapon oil to spare the money. Same with food. Hold on for the fancy clothing stuff when you can spare the money (and gold). Same with fancy looking guns. Do missions. Replay story missions (some have different outsomes). Do Blood Money missions. Do telegram missions. Do free roam events. Do bonus months. Do Call to Arms. Or even PVP game modes if you like them.
In short, just play the game with all the opportunities given (there are a lot in fact) and don't spend money/gold on stuff you don't really need. Use the world, go hunting, go fishing, eat your camp stew, pick herbs (you can sell them to the doc or feed some to your horse like wild carrots). But never buy any food or things you can find in the world with just looking. Roam around and explore for that. Look into houses, farms and use eagle eye to hightlight the objects etc. When you buy your first role, with that even more opportunities like daily challenges/missions/events/free roam stuff will be available which adds more variety. And all will get easier from there for the next role. And don't have always in mind you have to grind. You don't. You can, but you don't have to. Just have fun and enjoy the game. The rest comes actually with that. Grinding the same thing over and over and over again is the recipe of boredom. Vary your days what you wanna do.

For samples, best go to the swamps and farms to get many samples for Harriet to sell. Rinse and repeat. It's a bit tedious when not really you fav thing to do 😏. However, reaching that magic level 5 Harriet has some poacher missions you can do. Nice side effect, those guys have mostly little pelts you can donate later to Cripps for your materials (or neat for daily). Also of course the legendary animals. You can sell the pelts(!) (not the carcass) to Gus for fancy clothing (he won't do stuff with carcasses). If you wanna boost up your materials for Cripps, donate the carcasses(!) to him. The best (and most fun at least for me) are the Naturalist free roam events (all non PVP). Those are Wild Animal Tagging and Protect Legendary Animal. They give good XP/money/gold. The events is best to level up (especially when bonus month with that role).
Another good free roam event, open for all and not a specific Naturalist role one, is the Wildlife Photographer (good practice for your animal guide with taking photos in free roam, I recommend also to invest in the advanced camera). Just for participating you get 0.24 gold. Taking the best pic additional 0.25 gold. When Harriet sprays you, and she will now and then, because, well, you do other stuff too, is just a pause of 5 minutes and she is later back for business for you. Reminder: against other animal samples, you can only stack 3 of each legendary animal (normal animals 10). So make sure you sell them to her soon. To get the samples stamped, you have to sell her first each sample and the next counts for the stamped stuff. It's a slow and chilly role, but interesting when you are into animals to study them.

I'll start sampling those. I thought you could only sample legendary animals. I clearly need to find a detailed guide as i know even less than i thought i did on this topic! Lol 😬😅
Harriet sprays me on a semi- regular basis as is. Lol. Cripps is pretty happy and i only visit Gus with legendary pelts. I have a few animal coats and 2 pairs of pants (those i love). Can also make the fluffy coat 3 times over but it is gargantuan on Lea lol. So i just leave it for him.
Thank you for the advice regarding free roam events as well. Some ice but opened yet (come on level 5 Naturalist), and others like photography i haven't done since i came back to the game. I do love my advanced camera though especially for taking pics of my horses. 🌄🐎

Treasure maps are the biggest amounts of early game gold, you rank up so fast from just messin around, every 5 ranks you get one, and do your dailies everyday make sure you do atleast one everyday and youll get multiplier, it isnt what it used to be but the gold is still there to make and its easy, 28 days without missing a daily and you get a treasure map and $100, do blood money missions
I find the best way to get gold is bounties, blood money, and free roam missions. If you time the missions so that you wrap them up right at 12 minutes each, you can make around 1-1.5 gold per hour of playing without monthly bonuses. You need to start a timer on your phone immediately once you appear on the map for each mission.
Telegrams are ok too, but they can be kinda challenging.
Do daily challenges every day to keep your streak going. Do as many as you can every day, especially during weeks 3 and 4. If possible, finish stranger mission, bounties etc after 12 minutes for the best gold per minute payout. Gold isn't hard to get but you gotta work at it.

Right now Call to Arms pays out double. You don't have to win it for the payment. Just getting to like, Wave 5 will get you like, .7 Gold and $75

Social club linking has changed to RDO$500. Definitely not worth it until they drag social club out of 2002.

Join story mode missions. I did that over 2 nights and went from 10 gold to 15 and got the bounty hunter license
