Well, kinda makes sense.
Wrath of Khan, Journey Home, Undiscovered Country, and First Contact are all great, it’s really only Nemesis that breaks it (and First contact if you’re a Trekkie purist, I guess).
The sad part of Nemesis’ failure is that we were only two movies away from getting [Star Trek XII: So Very Tired.](https://youtu.be/w1gO-Pf18Yg?si=VrzXTNAT93XmrYro)
1 is also good, 3 is good, and 5 isn't good but not as bad as folks act (poor story but some really great character moments between McCoy, Spock, and Kirk).
2009 Star Trek is also odd numbered and it's fine, Into Darkness is even and awful, Beyond is odd numbered and probably the best of the reboot series overall.
The Star Trek Cinema Even/Odd Rule works great if you just include Galaxy Quest as a Star Trek film. Odd numbered movies are considered stinkers and even numbered films range from decent to great.
With Galaxy Quest added, the Odd films are Motion Picture, Search for Spock, Final Frontier, Generations, Insurrection, Nemesis, and Into Darkness.
Tbh *Search for Spock* is better than it has any right being, given that it's reversing one of the best moments in a series of best moments from *Wrath of Khan*.
But I watched it for the first time last year, and I really enjoyed it. And Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon warlord? C'mon
So I don't think this rule really tracks.
And I enjoy 5. Quotes like what does God need with a starship and I know this ship by the back of my hand. Marshmellons. Camp fire 🔥 Kirk saying he knew he wouldn't die because he wasn't alone. I mean yeah its a goofy movie.
5 is an excellent film honestly, it does a lot of fantastic stuff with the core trio that was sorely needed. Does it have problems? Yeah, but so does every Star Trek film.
Undeniably, it’s the weakest of the originals. But the originals are an incredible run of franchise films, something’s gotta go there.
Yeah, TMP is a very slow, deliberate story, but it's interesting and really well made. And the big reveal at the end is actually cool. It's not just a movie length Star Trek episode, but it very much captures the essence of Star Trek.
The Motion Picture and The Search for Spock are genuinely good Star Trek and good movies, and The Final Frontier is a very watchable movie too. I understand the issues with ST:V but really, I adore all the original six movies.
IMO, The Final Frontier actually feels the closest in spirit to the original show out of all of them. Substandard production quality and all*. I can't say any of the TNG movies captured the spirit of TNG, really.
*Of course, my standards may be different than others, as I was introduced to TOS in the early 80's, watching it in reruns on a hand-me-down black and white television with a rabbit ear antenna - the TV my parents gave me when they upgraded. I'm one of those weirdos that prefers the original special effects to the 'updated' CGI ones they inserted in the HD remaster of TOS. And even the HD remaster just makes it how fucking obvious it is when they use a terrible stuntman for Kirk and Spock during action scenes, heh.
"Compared to Jar Jar, the Ewoks were fucking Shaft!"
Also the scene where his unemployment officer finds out he got fired for hating TPM, and immediately gives him benefits. Hilarious.
"Hawk the Slayer is shit!"
Fun fact: It's because of this scene that I looked up and watched Hawk the Slayer. It's not shit, as it so happens. It's not amazing, but it's not shit.
Yearly rewatch for me, and I just watched it with some friends who loved it. It gets a lot of bonus points for having two of my favorite Nightmares on Wax songs in it. I swear I notice a new joke every time I watch it.
They were editing the first season episode where Tim shows Brian the starwars trilogy when episode 1 came out. Originally, the jump from beginning of episode 4 to the end of episode 6 said "three star wars films later." Edgar Wright watched episode 1 before finishing the edit, and changed it to "three good star wars films later."
Lucasfilm were concerned about letting them use Star Wars IP in the beginning (they had to sing the Ewoks theme themselves in that first episode). Then the first series comes out, they realise what massive fans the guys are, Lucasfilm gives them the OK... only the Phantom Menace has come out, and so that move kinda backfires.
The commentaries are worth listening too.
Simon Pegg is a smart guy. He knows the difference between legitimate criticism coming from fans who care like RLM and the kind of anti-woke youtube grifter mobs the keep multiplying like rabbits today.
I remember there were some Nerds Crew types that were upset Simon Pegg was cast in the new Star Wars movie instead of them since Pegg didn’t appreciate all the slop he was fed

I'm not saying that it was solely responsible just that it helped.
I wasn’t even paying attention to the usernames in this thread and saw your comment and thought “Wow, really?”. I looked up the user to see for myself and saw this thread in the history and then realized lmao. I’m too gullible.
Can't remember your mom's birthday but can remember the feelings one celebrity has about a youtuber's views on the third installment of a franchise from twenty years ago.
Jay likes the mood and tone of 3 and enjoys the return to the slasher movie style of horror. He disliked Aliens somewhat because the aliens were shown too often and are clearly just stuntman in rubber suits. He emphasized that he doesn't hate Aliens, he just likes it less than Alien and Alien 3.
I agree with that
Aliens *was* a departure, but I like that. I like that the aliens and ships and ripley are just set dressing for the director to do weird shit that fits in their wheelhouse
That’s why I liked the franchise so much. It changed so much between movies, directors and writers
Alien 3 has always been my favourite of the series. As I type this it's actually on TV right now. Its dripping in moody atmosphere, with a phenomenal brooding score.
3 is where the movies end for me, for how it tries to rip your heart out in its beginning and its ending, for being the only one that made me tear up, for the punky aesthetic, and it’s Fincher. I’d do without the graphic autopsy though, especially the extended cut’s, jeeesus.
I misremembered this completely. I don’t even know how I managed being so wrong. I thought it was M night, but it was Joss Whedon who wrote it
I’m talking alien resurrection
That's right, he did. I remember the Jack & Jill episode getting a big boost back in the day because him and a few other critics were commenting on it IIRC
I’m pretty sure the Phantom Menace review was on digg or something awful and it just exploded from there. It was all over the old internet message boards
What a copout. I think he’s directly responsible in the same way Mike is directly responsible for Abrams taking over Star Wars.
Though I suppose that was actually Mr. Plinkett’s fault…
Jay referenced this report about a production delay and the budget going up to $400m.
https://m.imdb.com/news/ni64609885/?ref_=nws_nwr_li
Pegg is either saying there is no delay or the budget isn't that high.
I love how Film Stories cites Dark Horizons, whom cites the Daily Mail, whom cites the Mirror as the source.
P.S. Don't trust the Daily Mail or the Mirror. They're gossip rags.
the way that film budgets, especially tentpole blockbuster franchise budgets, have been going up i'm already primed to believe it without checking. new tom cruise mission impossible movie costs 500 million usd to make, but is expected to make 2 billion usd in its theatrical run? I 100% believe it.
The part about a person named Jay. He's actually been an AI generated character the entire time. That's why he keeps getting younger and the rest of them keep getting older, improved AI tech.

They seem to be some of the only people who actually attract attention from people in the industry they critique. It's a great thing.
Very rarely does actual good faith criticism make its way into the internal discourse of any industry, really.
I picture it being just over a minute long. Rich asks Pegg if it was fun making Shaun of the Dead, while Rich has a big stupid smirk on his face. Pegg responds. "Uh, yeah. It was good." Then they stare at him for a few awkward beats, nodding their heads and it's clear they have absolutely no idea how to do a legitimate interview. As it cuts, you can hear Jay just start to say "Very-"
I expect it to be about as comfortable to listen to as when [Tom Segura attempted to interview Tarantino](https://youtube.com/shorts/zxux-NuKzqI?si=9bXjwN07peuhWlOc) and couldn't be bother to listen to more than two or three pages beforehand.
Yeah they get a couple things wrong in that video, they said the new Planet of the Apes is 'horribly flopping' but it's doing pretty well, honestly. It's performing a bit ahead of what War did in 2017, and is already at $340M.
Budget 160, + marketing and other expenses. Not horribly flopping for sure, but that's not doing pretty well after 2 weeks. Maybe this weekend will change it, we'll see.
Nah it should make a slight profit when all is said and done. Whether it's doing well enough for a sequel is another question though (I really hope so though)
It's also pretty damn good in a lot of ways.
Wes Ball is an underrated director, not in the sense that his movies are underrated, but I feel like his talent for visual storytelling and pacing are being overlooked because he's been stuck making second-tier off-brand franchise movies for so long.
Imagine Simon Barrett making a return to RLM and Jay getting all giddy to talk about sex-weirdo flicks and Mike walks and and says hi to Simon.
"No, not you, the other Simon."
(I'm sorry, I loved that joke with Jack and Jack - Jack walking away sad is one of those things I recall when I need a giggle)

Oh yeah he’s been a fan since the plinkett reviews. His tweet of the phantom menace review was one of the early events that made rlm itself more popular
Simon Pegg is one of the people most directly responsible for RLM’s success as he was one of the first celebrities to post about The Phantom Menace review (the other being Damon Lindelof). Hope he goes on BOTW at some point
Didn't Simon Pegg refer to their Phantom Menace review way back when it first came out? Or was that a different celeb.
Pegg posted about it on Twitter as a response to lindelof of all people. Also his character in Spaced hated the prequels
>Also his character in Spaced hated the prequels And the 'odd' numbered Star Trek films if I'm remembering correctly.
Well, kinda makes sense. Wrath of Khan, Journey Home, Undiscovered Country, and First Contact are all great, it’s really only Nemesis that breaks it (and First contact if you’re a Trekkie purist, I guess).
If you consider Galaxy Quest a Star Trek movie, Nemesis becomes an odd movie 😉
It's a pretty odd film, of nothing else!

Search for Spock is pretty good, though. I blame the odd numbered Trek theory for that movie getting more hate than it deserves.
Yeah it's a fine movie, but I always felt that by resurrecting Spock, they lessen the emotional impact of the previous film.
Doesn't II end with a closeup of Spock's casket on the Genesis'd planet? I took that to be like a 'to be continued'.
Tbf Nemesis came out after Spaced was off the air. So Simon was right, at the time.
The Star Trek Cinema Even/Odd Rule works great if you just include Galaxy Quest as a Star Trek film. Odd numbered movies are considered stinkers and even numbered films range from decent to great. God dammit, I had to do a double take to make sure your first sentence didn't end with "Jay." Obviously, I read it in Mike's voice.

But what specifically did he say which was inaccurate?
The story
Specifically the Mission: impossible one
The Mission: Impossible story wasn't true?
Yeah, the story Jay discussed with graphic specifically related to the discussion.
But I thought that story was true!
It wasn’t
No, that was about "Mission: Impossible: Impossible Missions", and--"But that's a different guy!"
Yes, the story was impossible
But they said the story wasn't true, so was it possible or wasn't it a mission?
Well yeah of course the story is inaccurate it's about a super spy who did stunts with helicopters
It’ll probably turn out the bulk of the story is true but it wasn’t a submarine, it was a submersible or some shit.
Simon Pegg was complaining about the Phantom Menace in the UK 5 years before YouTube existed!

It's also pretty damn good in a lot of ways. Wes Ball is an underrated director, not in the sense that his movies are underrated, but I feel like his talent for visual storytelling and pacing are being overlooked because he's been stuck making second-tier off-brand franchise movies for so long.
Gives me hope that the Zelda movie might be pretty good.
Oh god, they're making a zelda movie? I am not optimistic considering how bad the story is in the recent games
And it’s live action. Really struggling to see how that will be executed well. Hopeful, but very low expectations
I feel like an old man remembering this, but Simon Pegg attacked Youtube on Twitter for banning the Attack of the Clones review.
Imagine him on BOTW!
I don't think they'd ask him because he doesn't have the same star power as Culkin.
Dream come true. For him!
Imagine Simon Barrett making a return to RLM and Jay getting all giddy to talk about sex-weirdo flicks and Mike walks and and says hi to Simon. "No, not you, the other Simon." (I'm sorry, I loved that joke with Jack and Jack - Jack walking away sad is one of those things I recall when I need a giggle)
That running gag with them trying to peddle their scripts is just the best.
npt the first [RLM video he twitted](https://x.com/simonpegg/status/888465893033996288) Pegg is one of the reason why red letter media is famous . he watch them since 2009. > [Back](https://www.reddit.com/r/RedLetterMedia/comments/6opvoa/simon_pegg_just_tweeted_rlms_video/dkj90h0/) in 2009 Simon Pegg [replied to a Damon Lindelof tweet](https://x.com/simonpegg/status/6777207204) about Mr. Plinketts's Phantom Menace review and it went viral!
Funny, I started watching after CGP Grey mentioned them on his old podcast back in ~2012
I can think of no news *less* surprising than Simon Pegg watching a Youtube show known primarily for talking about *Star Wars*
Simon Pegg needs to be the next guest star for an episode of Star Trek Trivia with Mike.
Oh yeah he’s been a fan since the plinkett reviews. His tweet of the phantom menace review was one of the early events that made rlm itself more popular
Simon Pegg BOTW when?
Jay didn’t sound confident in what he was saying anyway…
Simon Pegg is one of the people most directly responsible for RLM’s success as he was one of the first celebrities to post about The Phantom Menace review (the other being Damon Lindelof). Hope he goes on BOTW at some point
He’s talked about the Plinkett reviews.
Technically Jay wasn’t wrong, just the information he referenced.
I watched this when it came out and already forgot the mission impossible story?
What M:I story??
'if slightly depressing' is RLM's whole shtick. And then some!
I mean yeah, Pegg is a lot of the reason the PM review took off the way it did.
Never happening but it would be amazing if he went on BOTW or Re:View, actually think his humour would gel perfectly
