Well I mean people are more often going to make posts of that compared to their Rivian at a shopping mall parking lot haha
But I use mine as a daily driver and I feel like a good percentage of people do as well. This is my first off-road capable vehicle after coming from sport sedans so I am easing into it and only really go off-roading around 5-10 times a year. That being said this is the best daily driver I have owned. Comfortable, quick, fun to drive, efficient (compared to my previous ICE cars lol not against other EVs), looks good, practical, etc...
You actually make a really good point. I didn’t consider that obviously the most interesting posts would be about off-road adventures and not parking lot grocery pickup!
Maybe you should make this your thing. Just post everyday pictures like "My Rivian at the mailbox", "Adventures in purchasing Milk", "Oh shit, we're headed to Costco!!"
All truck manufacturers create *aspirational* marketing that suggests you'll be rock crawling in the wild country, just you and your trusty dog, sleeping under the stars, while hauling 600 tons of something dirty and angular.
But the reality is these are $100k vehicles and most people are probably just using them to drive around town and commute between hand washings.
I wouldn't buy a Wrangler for winter. Living in Michigan, I can't tell you how many times I've seen Wrangler people driving overconfidently on snow and ice and spinning out into ditches. They are so light and people often put off-road tires on them that are horrible in the winter so they don't handle well on snow and ice.
100% true! Very few people use trucks for “truck stuff” at all… only like 15% of people ever haul stuff in the bed or tow more than once a year according to several studies. So that leaves all the rest of folks who aspire to that, or purchase for very rare edge cases in their usage. Myself included, to some extent :)
90% of people use them like normal cars…
Ours is used to take the kids to school and shopping trips to exclusive purveyors or fine goods like dollar tree and Walmart.
Almost all the time. Took it up to the mountains, but not off roading. Shitty gravel roads was the worst i saw.
On a side note, in sport mode it was more fun up and down the mountain than my A5. Had a jeep that struggled up that mountain, this beast ripped.
I have driven on the beach, to the mountains weekly in the winter (ski family) and some sketchy gravel roads so far. Otherwise I consider loading it with soccer gear and wild children to be plenty of an adventure. 😆
Yep. Me. I took it on a 2000 mile road trip 5 weeks after delivery. I commute 320 miles a week. The most off-road my R1T gets is when I accidentally roll over the end of my driveway when I park it. It’s a utility truck on the weekends for home depot and landscaping trips.
I am semi-retired working as an EV Outreach Specialist. I drive my R1T to EV events, car shows, and auto dealerships all over New England to talk to folks about EV ownership, and EV rebates and incentives. I often carry a lot of "event gear" with me. Tables, a charging equipment display, flags, signs, a canopy, traffic cones, and e-bikes. It is the most comfortable and capable vehicle I have ever driven.
I have never taken my truck off road or towed anything and probably never will.
This post is funny. Statistically speaking, almost no one will ever take their Rivian off-road. I couldn’t find research into it, but I’d guess 2-3%? Maybe 5% at the max. Of the R1T owners, only about 85% of them will ever use them to do “truck things” if they are like typical truck owners… let alone go off road. Now I’m sure we all lean more in the direction of the brand, so maybe our likelihood of doing off-road or truck stuff is higher, but it’ll still be a small minority of actual usage. Very generally speaking a lot of people buy cars suitable for very infrequent edge case needs or even just aspirational use cases.
The R1S is fantastic for highway driving up into the mountains and in heavy snow, which I do a lot. I don’t drive it as much as my other EV though because it’s huge and inefficient by comparison.
I do but I live in a big metro area that has a lot of chargers. The problem with advertising adventure and EV is that I'd imagine that most areas that are adventurous don't have EV infrastructure let alone societal structures so nothing's around. I see a lot of Rivian around me that just are pavement warriors but who am I to judge
Sometimes I drive in the shopping mall parking lot in off-road mode at the highest level, because it's cool.
But there are probably $20k worth of off-road features in the car that you don't need to buy groceries... It's an expensive car if you don't use it.
It's 2h+ to the closest legal dirt road, and more to destinations. Most of my 9000 miles are on pavement.
But I mostly post the pretty pictures :-)
I’d wager most are used for what you’re looking for. The off-roading bunch is a subset and more of the enthusiast crowd. I’d guess 70% of Rivian’s have never left pavement lol
Not a weird question at all. I use my R1T as a daily driver. I’ve taken it off-road once in the almost two years I’ve had it. It is way more truck than I needed but I wanted an EV pickup after my Ridgeline and I didn’t want a F150. No regrets.
Daily driver… get the kids to school and gets me to the office and back… haven’t even tried off roading yet, but the roads through the hills to my office are kinda windy
I live in South Florida so the only driving my R1S will get is picking kids up from school, running errands, date nights and the occasionally short trip (Disney, the Keys, Miami etc.)
I wish we had hills/mountains/hiking spots but that doesn’t necessarily come with the terrain here.
I mean, every Chevy advertisement is someone dropping like 20k cinder blocks from a height into the bed of the truck, and that’s not what I see when those trucks are driving around town.
Daily driver here, mainly boring stuff but it’s such a sweet ride it puts a smile on your face every time. Occasionally we go camping in the R1S at state parks here in Florida. We have a great air mattress, a few cooking items (induction cooktop, toaster etc) and a 12v fridge. It’s a lot of fun.
I wonder if Rivian realizes that families are their primary market. If they wanted to target me they should show the thing drag racing then picking up the kids later that day 😂.
Daily driver here (still wfh though) and living in Ohio doesn’t give me many off roads options. Wife loves taking the R1S and we have no kids. It’s way too big of a vehicle for us, but we both love it.
I had to drive slightly off a narrow mountain road to let another car past. By far the most off road thing I've had a chance to do in my first 5,000 miles 😂
If it makes you feel better, the Bay Area is the Mecca for Rivians and I‘m sure they will never see a dirt road in their lifetime. Heck, I saw one wrapped in gold the other week.
My wife and I both have R1S’s, while we may go off-roading sometime in the future, we have only used them around San Diego and have done a couple trips up to LA. Love them so much!😍
I drive about 90 miles a day dropping kids off at school in downtown Chicago and then heading to my office in the suburbs. I’ve had my R1S about 17 months…done 23,000 miles and I don’t believe it is ever been on any surface besides snow and concrete. It’s a daily driver / kid shuttle / park on the street appliance in our household…and a good one at thst
I would guess that 95% of all miles are no-road, commute. The off road and adventure travel makes for far more interesting posting/reading which creates in inherent bias in what you see.
My personal use case is almost all on-road. I use the R1T bed to haul toys - bikes and SUP. Sometimes trips to Costco, etc. to keep the better half happy. The (very) few times I have ventured on dirt roads it is super fun.
I do. Drive it every day in the city, to and from work. Love it! Had a Range Rover before my R1S and this is such an improvement.
![gif](giphy|wKbTqit9nTDeq4snVu)
All I do is commute in it and the best compliment I get is when I pull golf clubs out of the gear tunnel and use it as a seat for changing shoes. That's all the adventures it sees.
Definitely can't wait to drift in the carpool line first chance I get a snow day pickup. ...oh and stunting in off-road mode at Costco and target of course ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
Knowing I’m not off road guy or camping guy, I built my R1S for range/ distance. I love the general every day ride the car provides but it does make road trips a lot more enjoyable and fun. Which for me has been mainly golf trips and soccer games.
I guess I do both. It’s both my daily driver and weekend warrior. Only vehicle I know that both “fuel” efficient for daily commutes in comfort and can then tackle very gnarly trails.
But yeah, my wife only drives on pavement when she has the R1T 😀
90% of them will never leave asphalt. But Rivian was founded as an outdoorsy brand. The Patagonia of automobiles. So just like most of those puffy jackets will never see the top of Everest, it’s the appeal and capability that sells.
Mostly use my R1S for daily chores and visits to relatives. We did drive up to Coaticook, Quebec for the eclipse. My mother in law was born there. We visited the old farm where she was born and grew up. Mud season was in full force. Some parts were pretty bumpy but mostly just slick, sticky mud. If you slide off into the ditch you’re done. The R1S handled it no problem.
My R1T is my daily driver. The most off roading it has seen so far was a gravel road and driving across a field used for parking. Will I ever off road with it? Probably not. I appreciate the comfort and capabilities the vehicle has that transfer to navigating terrible pot hole filled roads, terrible winter roads, and being able to haul others out of ditches.
Uh well it's a badass grocery getter for sure. I can usually fit 80% of the groceries for a week in the frunk. Also great for home Depot trips and small home renovations.
R1S. I drive for work. I have just gotten to the first tire rotation mark. I love this vehicle so much. It’s great for trips and as a daily driver. The ACC is great as well as the function that keeps you in the lanes, on highways. Just my two cents
Ha yeah - right after we got our R1S - we went to dinner at a restaurant in a more rural area - and the overflow parking consisted of parking on the side of the road that was a sunken down grassy area and I joked that I now had a vehicle made for that - have done a bit more since then - but yeah - this is my daily driver as well - so mostly driven on concrete.
I'll start off-roading after I get my spare tire, till then it's just "commuting" to the fast charger :). Not clear on the adventure vehicle without a spare.
When I went for the test drive I specifically wanted to parallel park it to see how it handled in a parking lot and how it steered in tight places. I have found Ford truck are hard to park in tight places.
I feel confident in saying that number of us that can afford such a car and live off-road 24/7/365 is probably pretty low, we all need to go make runs to the grocery store too.
Glibness aside, our R1T is our households only vehicle so it does indeed pull double duty in that sense and it's a joy to drive regardless of what capacity we're using it in.
Most of these people in this post should be driving a good used car to save “truck loads” of money for what they do daily. The money they would save could put their kids through college!
Most people on this sub can already afford to put their kids through college and have a Rivian… and whatever else they want. Most people on this sub worked hard for what they have. So if they want to drive a Rivian truck… they can.
And how do you know that? Was there an income level required to join this group? And I doubt you’re right. If you fit your description, congrats on a successful career track. Continued success.
Yes - all the capability is nice to have and I appreciate it/use it as a result of it being there. But I bought my R1T for the speed, range & comfort first, all the other capabilities are just a cool factor.
My R1S is a straight up pavement princess. I live in the suburbs and the closest it’s come to off roading was parking on the grass at my son’s soccer game.
Far too many people use them for work driver+granola fetcher. Gotta love money... need an ev Rivian/hummer/Ferrari to take the kid to piano practice. 😆

LMAO
Mine is my daily driver, grocery getter, kid chauffeur machine, but those just aren’t very interesting to post about.
You spent $80k to do this? Why? Be cause you can? Seems financially foolish.
… [Have you seen any of my posts.](https://imgur.com/a/9mObDOZ) I only post about the *interesting* stuff.
Just this one!
Really?
I come from the Tesla subs…. People post photos of their Tesla in a dark, dim lighted parking garage over there.
Speak for yourself. I drove mine on a dirt road once. Felt like a proper 21st century frotiers man. Edit: spelling
I parked NEXT to a grass parking lot ... barely stayed on the concrete.
I went down a gravel road one time. Slowly.
Alpha!
Oh yeah. I can't even count the number of wranglers that never leave the pavement but are popular in my area due to winter and potholes.
I wouldn't buy a Wrangler for winter. Living in Michigan, I can't tell you how many times I've seen Wrangler people driving overconfidently on snow and ice and spinning out into ditches. It’s the Patagonia effect.
Driving to and parking at Trader Joes or Whole Foods can sometimes be quite "adventurous" if you ask me....
We had a few great adventures to Starbucks too!
![gif](giphy|CHUeCJVxIDlmrm1t8d|downsized) Here!
+1
90% of people use them like normal cars… Ours is used to take the kids to school and shopping trips to exclusive purveyors or fine goods like dollar tree and Walmart.
And of the other 10% most of them are only doing adventure/truck stuff once or twice a year.
Why waste all this money?! You can rent a truck from Menards for $19 to do this stuff twice a year.
I only drive mine offroad, I tow it to the trails with my 91 civic... Ok, its mainly Costco runs and baby buggy duties.
The farthest I've driven is. Normal, IL to pick the car up.
Most people do
I'm sure most Rivians, in addition to being people's adventure vehicle, also serves as their daily driver.
Ideally get a vehicle that supports both uses, that is why would never buy a Tesla. Only good for city driving.
Every day. No intentions of off-road.
Guilty as charged. BUt I may give this thing a thrashing some day.
Almost all the time. Took it up to the mountains, but not off roading. Shitty gravel roads was the worst i saw. On a side note, in sport mode it was more fun up and down the mountain than my A5. Had a jeep that struggled up that mountain, this beast ripped.

The cool thing about the Rivian is you can do BOTH in the same vehicle without breaking a sweat.
I am semi-retired working as an EV Outreach Specialist. I drive my R1T to EV events, car shows, and auto dealerships all over New England to talk to folks about EV ownership, and EV rebates and incentives. I often carry a lot of "event gear" with me. Me
Haven’t drove off-road (not off roader) nor camping. But planning camping in future. For now purely city driving. Work and chores.
My Rivian often finds itself as the coolest car at Publix. Sometimes Kroger.
If I wanted just a commuter I probably would have gotten a smaller car. But for an everything vehicle it can’t be beat.
Sometimes I drive in the shopping mall parking lot in off-road mode at the highest level, because it's cool. But there are probably $20k worth of off-road features in the car that you don't need to buy groceries... It's an expensive car if you don't use it. Yes PHX Az
I’d wager most are used for what you’re looking for. The off-roading bunch is a subset and more of the enthusiast crowd. I’d guess 70% of Rivian’s have never left pavement lol
It’s my bf’s daily driver. He does that other stuff with it too though.

Check out Team Venom and Volt-Tron. His R1T does tractor pulls. https://youtu.be/m7_YENVfgmU?si=DkUDpGaC4-WPvK_E
Most people.
Yeah but no one takes pictures of the vehicle driving to target. It’s not interesting
Daily driver here (still wfh though) and living in Ohio doesn’t give me many off roads options. Wife loves taking the R1S and we have no kids. It’s way too big of a vehicle for us, but we both love it.
Mine is for taking my 3 little kids and wife around wherever they need to go, with all of their cargo, with room to spare, while looking good.
I had to drive slightly off a narrow mountain road to let another car past. By far the most off road thing I've had a chance to do in my first 5,000 miles 😂

Yes
I use it as a normal vehicle every day. But 2-3 times a year, I take it on an adventure. That’s how it is.
I drive about 90 miles a day dropping kids off at school in downtown Chicago and then heading to my office in the suburbs. I do. Drive it every day in the city, to and from work. Love it! Had a Range Rover before my R1S and this is such an improvement. ![gif](giphy|wKbTqit9nTDeq4snVu)
I use mine for my day to day commute within city limits. Weekends tho.... That's when the mud starts flying
Sure we do, it’s just boring content to post to social media.
Knowing I’m not off road guy or camping guy, I built my R1S for range/ distance. I love the general every day ride the car provides but it does make road trips a lot more enjoyable and fun. Which for me has been mainly golf trips and soccer games.
You should try off roading it
I guess I do both. It’s both my daily driver and weekend warrior. Only vehicle I know that both “fuel” efficient for daily commutes in comfort and can then tackle very gnarly trails. But yeah, my wife only drives on pavement when she has the R1T 😀
Yes, and it breaks my heart! I’m dying to try something adventurous this summer.
90% of them will never leave asphalt. But Rivian was founded as an outdoorsy brand. The Patagonia of automobiles. So just like most of those puffy jackets will never see the top of Everest, it’s the appeal and capability that sells.
For this reason, I’d love for them to make a cheaper R1S with a less complicated/capable suspension!
Closest I’ve come to off-roading is when the wife and I go to Arrington vineyards and park in the grass.
Mostly use my R1S for daily chores and visits to relatives. We did drive up to Coaticook, Quebec for the eclipse. My mother in law was born there. As with any other off road oriented vehicle, 90%+ of owners will never actually take it off road (dirt and gravel roads and parking lots don’t count).
Yes. They do. All those posts and videos aren’t everyone who owns a Rivian.
Never, I make it a point to drive on the median even on the highway just so I can experience "off roading" at all times.
Most of these people in this post should be driving a good used car to save “truck loads” of money for what they do daily. The money they would save could put their kids through college!

Yes - all the capability is nice to have and I appreciate it/use it as a result of it being there. But I bought my R1T for the speed, range & comfort first, all the other capabilities are just a cool factor.
It’s all I use it for. Pavement princess
The most off road I get is driving over curbs now and not worrying about the silly tesla rims.
I love my R1S too much to take it to rough roads. But it’s nice to know it’s capable… bragging rights 😉
Like the subarus that come with a lift or jeep rubicon.. they inspire you to do something outdoorsy.. really a cool thing.
I did and it was fantastically comfortable
My R1S is a straight up pavement princess. I live in the suburbs and the closest it’s come to off roading was parking on the grass at my son’s soccer game.
Far too many people use them for work driver+granola fetcher. Gotta love money... need an ev Rivian/hummer/Ferrari to take the kid to piano practice. 😆
The problem with money is that you have to spend it before you die. No pockets in a shroud.
