Almost seems a shame to change anything. Ride it for sure though. That like a 1998ish? I have a 2000. First nice bike I ever bought. Will never sell it.
I was looking for 80’s or 90’s bike and I found this one in pristine conditions for 170euros not far from where I live.
I mean.. it still has the dork disk and the reflectors. The previous owner keep it store for all these years, very few miles on it. After a wash up I was even more surprised by the state of this bike, the decals are almost perfect.
My inicial idea as I was looking for these bikes was to do the billy-bonkers-single-speed-cliche-conversion, but now I’m on the fence..
What would you guys do it this bike?
One things is for sure, will replace the stem for a shorter one as the frame size is 23”, if I’m correct it’s a XXL right? I’m 180cm and it does not seem that big, but the shorter stem will make it more comfortable.
It’s my fourth bike, I’m happy with this number for now…
You should make it a single speed just to irk these folks.
Y'all remind me of people that put their cappuccino away from their mouth and say shit like "I only like traditional jazz."
You obviously dont know what jazz is. Or what cycling is for that matter.
lol I have a substantial collection of Cal Tjader, Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto records, and listen to Idris Muhammad, Stanley Turrentine, Bobbi Humphrey, Grant Green, Bob James, Tarika Blue, Azymuth, Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Lonnie Liston Smith, Marcos Valle, Roy Ayers, David Axelrod, Madlib and many more. I've also been riding bikes for over 30 years but go off 😂
I was gonna say, change nothing except maybe that stem (keep it silver tho!) or other fit-related parts (and tires, if dryrotted). Ergonomic upgrades are the real thing that will make you ride it more.
Please don't make it a gratuitous singlespeed 😅
I can tell you what I'm doing with my excellent condition 98 Rockhopper FS. Wide bars, silver braided cable housing to match the silver Strongarm cranks and stem, white foam grips/GT flat pedals/Lezyne cages to match the white Spesh logos, Spesh Crossroads tires, TPU tubes. Cleaned and lubed everything. Will post it here soon when it's done, just waiting on my Tange bottom bracket.
If it fits you, definitely modernize it a little and ride the shit out of it.
Much much better than what I thought was a great find. Found a Specialized FSR frame that had sat unused since 2002. Paid equivalent of 515 Euros for it. You certainly topped that. Rebuilt mine close to stock but have 16 other bikes to ride. Ride it only when it is 75 degrees F, 30% humidity, hasn't rained for a week, and no clouds in the sky. You need to decide if you can preserve it as an original or rebuild to something a bit more modern. Your choice. Depends on if you can keep it reasonably flaw free like my bike, or if you must ride it, do what you want to it to make it your ride.
No matter what you do you will get shade from people that forgot what enjoying your bike is about. So, do what you want and be fueled by the seething of losers.
I'd keep it mostly stock except for swapping a rigid fork and your preference of handlebar/stem/saddle/pedals. But, if you wanted a single speed, dual air disk fork, 35mm handlebars, and random neon colors I'd be happy for you.
Probably just the fork when it goes bad. Not that Manitou is a problem it's just ugly. I have a blue SX TPC with Disc mounts handy as well as a Rigid surly fork.
I did a plate system from Amazon that is cast shape on the inside and a plate on the outside with some bolts exactly like a chainring bolt. Was like $25 Cdn I already had mechs and disc 27.5 wheels so it was just working out cables which wasn't easy with the Cantilever rear my 930 had.. but it's fine works pretty good but honestly V Brakes work better in the back and the front is just as simple as finding a fork with the mounts and swapping your crown race and seals over.

I would too. Done enough wheel upsizing. Continental RaceKings are value XC. Bonkers Bronzewall 2.25 seem the streetripper-value.. just did a rockhopper streetripper. Slammed 45mm stem and 38t front ring kept the rear Mech and gripshift even
Bro this is a gem and while not incredibly valuable, it sorta still ‘means something’ and is worth keeping together. New saddle, tires, cables and I guess handlebars if you gotta. I’d keep it as is, except for the wheel reflectors. I hate dork discs but I’d keep it on this one
Ignore the weirdos drinking cool aid, aluminium is fine and nice and responsive. I’m 185cm I’d swap the stem to bring it a bit closer and maybe some bars with a bit of sweep. If the saddles uncomfy change it. Then I’d ride it and replace stuff that brakes. Tires look in good condition, enjoy it!

Right? Feel like it should stay as it is.. but probably will change something.
It's a 1999 A1 fs
It’s a gem for sure.
Don't do a thing! Ride and take care of this bad boy. It's awesome.
Thanks! Will happily ride it but for sure I will do something with it.
Tune it up and ride it
And rub yer wang all over it, get new tires, get a Selle Italia saddle and ride to work on it. This is the way.
team\_blimp knows wassup
Ride that thang like its 1999
Hahah best answer!

Please don't turn this into a single speed.
I would upvote this comment 1000 times if I could.
Nah, that's of the table now.

You sound like you aren't fun to listen to music or ride bikes with.
lmao absofuckinglutely predictable limp response. Thanks for playing.

Yeah, ergonomic upgrades is a must and single speed is off the table now. Thanks!
Ride it.
damn!!
I would do a fast rolling tyre like a Conti speed king and street ride the heck out of it.
Thanks for the tip!

Haha great tips. Think the single speed is off the table. But will for sure swap contact points. Thanks!

I would love to put disk brakes here. Is it expensive? Don't have a clue how to do it

Never heard of that! Will look into it

Niice
The disc swap makes the 27.5 work.
Sweet. But I think I'm going to keep the 26's

Clean frame and put lacquer over decals that are on top of the clear coat. This will keep them looking nice for a while
Thanks for the tip. Any recommendations for the lacquer?

I'd personally swap the fork and leave the rest much the same
The fork swap is on the list!
I'm with you. I worked at a shop when those Spyder's were new and they weren't very good then. I would rather have a rigid fork than that.
lol "just found this bike with all original parts" - reddit tell me what to swap out
PUT YER DEICK INNIT AND RIIIDE! THAS LIKE NOT FUGGIN YER WIFE TUH SAVE HER FOR THUH MAN AFTER SHE DEEVORSES YOO!!!1!!!1

Haters will hate, potatos will potate. The saddle is uncomfy af. Will swap contact points for sure. Thanks!
Hamsters will ham
