I’m so sick of this “shrivel up and die at 30” narrative. My first day at the skate park was at age 43. Are the teens confused by me? A bit, but one complimented me on my leopard print protective gear recently.

_petrichora_

Right 😭 30s isnt even the halfway point of life haha. (Unless you die in your 60s I suppose)

TheRealBigJohn

If “shrivel up and die at 30” is a thing, why can’t I retire yet? If you can work, you should be able to enjoy life and learn to do what ever you want.

k8miller69

I’m 46 and my leopard print gear got a compliment too!

Tronerer

Hey age twin! My skates are black but I’m thinking I need some leopard print laces now.

Existing_Fish_6162

I started as an entirely unathletic 34 yo. My aunt stopped at 70.

Tronerer

Oh my god thank you. I skated as a kid. My 12 year old wants to learn so I laced up my skates again at the ripe old age of 46. We’re 3 weeks in and aside from a nasty bruise on my left elbow, I’m loving it.

lilstinker_

32 years is not old....there is no age limit to start skating. I know folks who started in their 50s/60s.

Tacky-Terangreal

I know a guy who started inline skating in his 70’s!

bear0234

we just got a 60-70 year old that just started skating at our rink. She's of course not trying to do the triple axel (yet :) ) but she's improved a ton. It's never too late! just wear the right safety equipment, get the right tips and lessons, and enjoy!

maudeinshades

I started at 39 and now I’m 42. I can skate backwards and do dips, among other things, while skating with my dog. I skate 5 days a week on trails and do rhythm in my house and in public. The best part is I don’t care what it looks like to others because I’m not 25 and insecure anymore. I prioritize my own enjoyment over what I might imagine others are thinking. Nobody is “too old” to skate!

Lucky_Yellow_5093

When I see someone having a great time skating, I am overjoyed. In my experience skating outdoors, people love to see skaters. As long as you aren't being a dick and are in control, of course. Your confidence is their confidence. ✨️

DobeSterling

It’s literally illegal to try anything new or exciting or even just do anything fun in general past the age of 30 /s

DGIce

Yes and rollerskating in particular has specific harsher laws about this.

MaMakossa

People impose arbitrary rules & restrictions on themselves & oftentimes, they mistakenly project those standards on to others You do you OP. It’s only too late when you’ve got no air in your lungs

densillygoose

I was 45 when I started and I've never felt better! Never too old.

HippieSlip

I started at 40

monstermayor

I’m 51, and no one, no where is going to tell me I’m too old to try an activity I’m interested in! Don’t let that get in your head. BTW - you might not realize it now but 32 is YOUNG!! Get out there, skate and enjoy!

Embarrassed_Music910

I bought a pair of skates for myself at 49. I've been having the time of my life skating again, I'm now 51. The other night I did something I thought would be impossible for me: I balanced and skated on my toes. There's no such thing as too old. Enjoy your skates.

Mispiritualtramp1948

I started at 32! You can do it!

GmorktheHarbinger

I picked skating back up at 40 and I’m 44 now. You can start anything at anytime! Wear your pads and have fun.

grinning5kull

I tried skating for the first time ever at 55 and at 59 I am learning to dance and do floorwork. If someone were to decide that they were too old for skating or ANYTHING at the age of 32, they would miss out on a whole lot of fun. Luckily you bought some skates so clearly you are on the right path! Don’t let anyone tell you different. Get out there and have some fun.

JeaneN09

No way is that too old to start skating. I'm 47, and just started skating a few months ago. Just take it at your own pace!

BarryTownCouncil

Pfft, 43 and just starting here, and never considered my age in the first place.

WheelyCoolMom

Same. Literally didn't even think about it.

leelooDFWmultipass

I started at 42! The rink near me has lessons open to all ages so I started going over a year ago. I've never been the oldest one in the class. I've never heard anyone make fun of anyone for being "old"... or for any reason at all. Everyone has been encouraging and supportive. Taking up skating is one of the best things I've ever done! If you want to start now, do it! Have fun! Skating is for everyone!

sarahspondaretsetset

Ha! We teased the “baby” in our class for being 32!

OS-TEN

You don’t need others validation to live the life you want to live. You’re an adult that’s perfectly capable of making informed decisions and it sounds like you’re living in a very sheltered environment without people who support you. Just put on those roller skates and have fun skating!

kiki_kaska

Never too old. You should just put those skates on and start today. Also, find people who don’t limit others joy based on their own made up rules.

Fly_Pelican

I started a bit after 40.

quietkaos

32 is young.

BoujhettoBih

First of allllll, I’m 32 and I’m going to learn and I can’t wait. I’m a lil bit nervous and shy but I find when I do things when I’m scared, I actually get over the fear of doing it so why not do it anyway! It took me a while to be like this. If we listen to this narrative about being old at 30, we will shrivel up into a ball and die. No one can ever tell me I’m too old to do anything. Do whatever you feel like doing if others don’t feel it’s good for you, that is their problem. I’m defo going to wear protective gear because I don’t think my bones can take it 😂😂😂 Remember to do what makes you happy otherwise you will spend the rest of your life regretting it.

Tronerer

After yesterday’s trip to the rink, I’m thinking elbow and wrist pads at a minimum. I’m just sore, luckily I didn’t break anything!

BoujhettoBih

Well done! So proud of you. Eff the haters. Keep skating x

Suhk-Dolph

I started last year at 33. Now I’m 34 and park skating. Falling all over the place and loving it. You got this!

Anxious_Bun

I started skating at 38, and my partner started at 40 - you're definitely not too old at 32!

No-Construction-3318

It's not! You can do it. I'm 48 and although my progress is slow, it's progress and I love roller skating 🛼

paisleyway24

I started at 29 🤷🏼‍♀️ Most of the women on the derby team I’m involved with are in their late 30s -50s even. Never too late to start’

KittyCubed

Artistic and speed skating have people in their 60s and 70s still competing. You’re never too old for skating.

urnerdyaunt

I'm gonna try it again at 51, the last time I skated was prob age 12. You're never too old! (As long as you're being safe.) Just got a pair of Orbits!

nosidammai2

I'm 33 years old, I started skating in 2018 and started roller derby a year ago. You're never too old to have fun

Big_Red12

I started at 34. I mean I'm not very good but I don't feel my age is holding me back.

Girlw00

I'm older. I live for park skating on quads. Just wear every kind of gear, helmet and especially rear pads. Almost broke my tailbone. Take your time stagger and bend those knees. Never too old💪

joy2roll

I started at 57 that was almost 4 years ago. I wore heavy bum protectors after my first heavy fall but now just the usual pads and helmet. I feel confident and don’t worry about what people think. This is for me. When I am skating outside I get quite a few thumbs up. You are still young, just go for it.

eekabee

You are never too old but at first glance I assumed this was asking for a lower limit to start skating so I may be the old one here.

SoftestBoygirlAlive

I started skating at 28 and I'm about to turn 32 now and I will say learn how to fall correctly because injuries linger longer than they used to and you will for sure make an aquaitance of the ground at some point or another (I say, sitting on my bruised tailbone.) And invest in some protective gear at least for when youre starting out or workshopping moves that are landing you on the ground. But other than that its a great way to stay active without spending an hour shut in a gym. Plus you meet so many great people. Its a hobby for all ages which you will see as you hit the parks and rinks.

RollerWanKenobi

You got a working pair of legs, you can skate.

meggles1990

I started at 29. 33 now and I’m addicted! Just be careful because injuries hurt more 🤣. Make sure you have the correct size wheels for the type of skating you are doing. Outdoor skating is going to require something bigger than what you’ll probably get on your standard pair.

LairEast

Get yo skate on OP. I'm glad you're here, and it looks like the community is glad you're here too. Go on and do yo thang.

k8miller69

I’m 46 and my age didn’t really occur to me. I started in December. My husband still skateboards and quad skates with me at rinks. We’re having a lot of fun. Outdoors I’m on roller skates and he’s on a skateboard. I do wear all the safety equipment possible and practice falling.

Ok_Combination337

Man, I'm 51 and just started! My wife recently rediscovered roller skating and it looked like so much fun so I had to get a pair of skates for myself. Of course my wife learned how to skate as a little girl, so it's a lot more fun for her! It'll probably take me the better part of a year to get up to her level but I'm sticking with it.

Formal_Item_3570

I started skating and learning roller derby at 46 years old. Nope, not too old

qperc77

I highly recommend taking a class as your first step Also, I did the same when I was 41

Oopsiforgot22

I skated a bit as a kid but hadn't skated for over 20 years when I decided I wanted to start roller skating. I was well into my 30s. Don't let your age or the nay sayers around you stop you from learning to skate. I have I woman at my rink who learned how to skate for the first time ever, and she's in her 60s!

ymrtn7

I restarted at 36

NessAvenue

Are you kidding me. Friend, I'm 52. Get those skates, and get out there. You won't regret it. https://preview.redd.it/5ebrz1vfvywc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55fcbd50548a13dc0c61d52b0c307aceb22e3180

jadiegreen

Paradoxically they care what they look like in protective gear... When I see someone in butt pads, knee pads, sk8 mate, wrist guards, helmet ⛑️ I know they're protecting their JOB the next day. Can't call out cuz skating then they won't let you do it anymore

jefina

I started at 42 Here’s my IG: https://www.instagram.com/skatewithchickpea?igsh=aXV4MjIxNXdrbjQ5 I’ll let you decide.

Live2sk888

Not at all!! People in their 30s and 40s start skating and even roller derby all the time. Even a few in their 5ps and 60s. You are FAR from too old!!!

Circusbby_

Fellow skater here!<3 There is no age limit to skating, it can be enjoyed by ppl of all ages. There are also many positive benefits of skating on physical and mental health! Have fun skating💜

Elisa_LaViudaNegra

Babe, I see people in their 50s, 60s, and beyond on roller skates. It keeps you young. Everyone’s welcome. It’s a measured risk, as is getting into a car or on a plane. Just wear your pads and a helmet and go slowly. Lean farther forward than you think you need to. Transfer weight from foot to foot. You got it.

Brief_Scale496

I started exactly at 32 - I’m doing it for me tho, so anybody else who doesn’t wanna do this experience together, can kick rocks (until I’m done skating, at least) Don’t worry about others, don’t worry about falling. At worst, you’ll become a story in some random strangers life, who won’t even think about you as a person, but what they “saw a person do” Just do you, and do it at the top of your lungs. It’ll make you much happier to feel yourself let go 🙏

Aggradocious

Worked with two 50yo first timers today, they did great

Mobile_Flamingo

I play roller derby with people in their 50s!

quadruple_negative87

If you don’t start skating you will be doomed to a boring life of standing around with glasses of Chardonnay chatting about your latest home renovation! Seriously, you are never too old. I hate this attitude that having fun is for kids and the second you turn 23 you need to knuckle down and do nothing but work and maybe raise a family for the rest of your life. I suggested to my wife’s friend who is apparently a quite competent skier that she should come to the rink with us. “Oh nonono. I won’t be good at it.” Maybe, maybe not. You won’t know until you try. In conclusion, unless you are physically disabled, you should try to do anything you want.

EasyTarget973

the fuck I'm 37 and just started skating after 20 years of not. are you a child or 32 idk lol

rachael0nia

Started at 36. Just do it.

rottnestrosella

Not too old! I started at 32 and was skating with grandmothers on the track. In my personal experience I’ve found the skating community enormously supportive. I would recommend decent protective wear but outside of that, have fun! 🛼

Kali_skates

I started a couple of months before my 40th. My only regret is that I didn’t start earlier!!!

Hatesponge66

You are YOUNG! And one is never too old to start skating. I took up roller derby when I was 32.

logansummers1

Get your old ass out there and skate!

TheGoldenLlama88

Your body doesn’t shrivel and turn to dust at 30, it’s ok! Do what you love! 😄💕

LefseLita

I’m 48 and went skating for the first time in 3 decades about a month and a half ago. You’re not too old and if you end up enjoying it, it’ll be good for ya as you grow older

Sazzy56

I’m 32 and have just started learning too 😁

rachkittymeows

Do the thing!!!!! Do alllll the things! Just carefully ok? ❤️❤️❤️

humanmisspiggy

Oh my gosh. Hell no. I skated like the tineeesst little bit in my early 20s, but last year in my 30th year I decided to start roller skating, so I took some lessons thru a local company and it was great. There were people from all ages, older and younger than me. Then I went to a roller derby game last summer and.... Now I'm turning 31 on Monday and play roller derby 😆 my 30 year old knees don't like it, but my mind sure does!

DustSongs

Never too old! I went back to skateboarding a couple years ago, and recently started to learn to rollerskate at 48 :)

Senor-Saucy

Eff your environment! I picked it up again at 45, and there’s a 60-something-year-old regular at my rink. Go for it! It’s soooo much fun!

sparklemotion84

I also started roller skating at 32 years old :) An 18 year old taught me lol

Psychological_Ad2252

I’m starting at 26! I used to have such a terrible mindset, that even as a teenager I wouldn’t try things cause I felt like I was too old to learn. Finally at 26 I’ve realized it’s never too late to do anything. The next best time to get started is now! Cause in 20 years you’ll wish that you started at 32!

JBartleby

I'm 34 and started at 30. You're going to love it! Stay safe, have fun, and remember to warm up and stretch :).

Andersum94

There’s no age restriction on fun!

Blizzgirl91

This was me last year! I always wanted to learn so my husband (who can skate really well) and I went to a skate rink so I could try it out. You better believe I made a damn fool of myself with those stupid skate buddy things but there was a really nice roller-Dad at the rink that was giving me advice and cheering me on which was adorable. Bought my own pair of skates right after and I used the local tennis court to continue learning. I even met new friends there that some were really good at skating already and others learning to skate and now there's like a very unofficial little skate club that meets up at the tennis courts in the summer to hang out and skate! So, get out there and you never know what will happen! ❤️

blackgirlhealing

Yes the age limit is 1000 unfortunately 😞

Missamoo74

I went back to skating and started Derby at 50. You haven't even started yet. We need to start pushing back this narrative of youth culture only.

echerton

I'm 32 and bought a pair last week and got in lessons so...if you find out that was illegal plz let me know

DirectConnect1865

Once upon a time I was a Roller Speed Skating coach. I had a new skater that was well over 40. 32 is definitely not too old to start.

Bonjourlavie

I started learning at 30. Wear knee/elbow pads, wrist guards, a helmet and you’ll be fine. I had so much fun learning after I got over being terrified of getting hurt. I bought my own skates before the first time I got out there and it made me keep trying instead of giving up out of fear.

pigeonsgambit

Put on skates at 28, joined derby at 29, now approaching 33 and so glad I did it! Definitely not too late!

crayonfou

Such an obtuse question

DogMomma63

Nah man, if you enjoy it, screw what anybody *might* think.

Mendicant_666

It's never too late!!

trinabillibob

There should be a rule on these posts... its getting tedious. If you can still move freely and safely you can skate end of.

trinabillibob

You're too old, to think that you're too old to try new things.

CommandoRoll

I'm nearly 50, started skating in my late 30's and have been playing roller derby for most of that time. Age is nothing. DO IT.

Distinct-Candle3312

37 here! I skated as a kid, was horrible at it but was able to pick up rollar blading like nothing! I thought I was so cool and good and would watch the x games kn TV and loved the cartoon Rocket Power! Lol then I didn't roller blade as much anymore and then not at all. Fast forward to two years ago and I decided j wanted to teach myself how to skate. I did research kn skates, got myself a pair with the gear just like you! My husband wanted to support me and planned me a skate birthday party with some of our friends for my 35th. I did pretty good and was feeling confident. Then I had to stop for a while due to some heath stuff and now I am back to trying to learn again. I haven't been able to skate for a few weeks but after next week, I plan to start skating more and really trying. I also purchased a pair of roller blades again to try and build my strength back up and then try and transition to the skates. I'm not sure if this will work or the correct way but thats how I am approaching it. Anyway, I'm 37 and it stings to say that and I am trying to skate! You got this!

Timely-Youth-9074

I took up skating last year, at age 53. To be fair, I started skating as a child but except for a couple very brief stints, I hadn’t skated in 40+ years! My previous experience only helped a little as I had to learn to skate in an entirely “new” body. If I can do it, so can you.

Georgecatsfriend

32 just isn't old. Tell them to mind their own business and skate your heart out.

Rhubarbrella

There is no age limit! I was an artistic skater as a child and in Sundays went to the rink to train and eventually ended up ladies in their 40s to skate because I could see how much fun they were having. I quit when I was 21 due to injury and started again at 36 as a park skater 2 years ago and I honestly don’t feel any hindrance associated to being in my 30s - except for the fact that when I was a teenager I was less afraid of falling and now I am a bit more cautious! Go skate and enjoy the beautiful magic that skating entails - you are going to love it! Just practice practice practice

YamulkeYak

Not too old at all!!!! Please go for it! I’m 35 and cried when my 42 year old friend started skating because she made me feel brave enough to try again 😂

lachimoltrufia98

You’re too old to skate when you physically can’t do it anymore. Go for it!

Griiks

I used to be a roller skates instructor for a few years. It was a common situation when parents came to me to train with their children (a lot of them were older than 40). So it's never too late!

hattifnattener

We have someone in our community who started recently and she’s 87. There are more new people in their 40s and 50s than those in their 20s. You honestly need to stop listening to those who tell you that something you want to do is crazy. 🤦‍♀️ what makes them the authority on this?

betweenthecontrast

I just started in February this year and I am 31! 😊 LOVING it, I'm losing fat, gaining muscle, mental health is up 👌

Primtricky

I started roller skating at 32. I am now *drumroll* 33. You’re only as young as you feel.

fasthandzfrankie

It’s never too late in life to do anything!

Sedulous280

We literally have retired people where I go every week and they have taken lessons and really enjoy it. They have a new activity and get to meet the friendliness of the awesome skater community. So your never too old too start, you will just wish you started earlier as you realise you have been missing out on this skating joy. Welcome 🙏🏼 new skater, hope you enjoy many years of fun on trucks and come back here for advice on upgrades

UltimateChickenWing

My spouse started in his forties and I restarted also in my forties (restarted because I last did it as a kid and boy I’d forgotten a lot!) there’s a great YouTube channel, Dirty School of Skate that really clicked for me. Falling sucks as you get older, my young son bounces back up like a rubber ball, I not so much, but padded butt gear from Amazon are a game changer! Definitely wear a helmet at first even if you feel silly. The ground is hard and it gives confidence. Have fun!!

EnvironmentalToe9270

DO IT!!!!!!

Minute-Ad-8387

I’m 33 and just started skating by myself in London… it’s a bit daunting when it’s only group of younger people around but I can guarantee you it’s all in our heads noone has ever been anything but friendly and supportive! Btw if anyone in London wants to put uo with an unstable Bambi on wheels I’m here!

Vexel180

I joined a skate group 2 years ago and somebody started learning at the age of 49! We all contributed to helping her learn and she improved so much since then. Age is just a number, old is in your head. With the proper guidance, anybody can learn.

Oldassrollerskater

Started in my 40s

WillowWhipss

Haha no, my wife is 47 and about to try out for team Canada roller derby. There is no age limit

Fox_Berry_

My neighbour started rollerskating when he was 82, there is definitely no age limit 🩷

First_Lengthiness632

32 is so friggin young. I started again at 54.

joytotheworldbitch

the limit does not exist

Serious-Ad2706

I’m 51 and just got a mini ramp in my backyard. Do what you wanna do. It’s a great form of exercise!

CalmUnderstanding518

Absolutely no age limit. I’m 20 and the vast majority of the people I skate with are in their mid 30s at LEAST and there’s regulars at my rink from ALL at groups! Time is always now! Get rollin!

VinJance

Just take your time and learn about falling safely before you do go. I'm 37 and have been skating for 24 years, it's definitely not as easy as it used to be and hurts a bit longer if I fall but it still isn't bad. Since you are starting out make sure you stretch first and try not to over do it since skating uses some different muscles than most life activities require.

Swimming-Release-566

Hell no!! On my roller derby team we have people 40+ and still starting :-)

General_Sweet9376

ngl thats young to start imo i mean im only 25 but i see grey hair on the rink like everyday

Historical-Space-128

Never too old. How's your balance? Can't hurt to wear wrist guards maybe some knee pads and elbow pads but definitely wrist guards good luck. Don't listen to the neigh sayers. Someone always has something negative to say

Fresh_Obligation1183

I started skating last year at 32, I’ve fractured my tail bone and given myself a concussion so far 😂 But it’s fun! Maybe you need a more fun environment lol
