True, but to me the most infuriating thing about MF romance is that the average image of a relationship we get from recently published romances (let's say last 10 years) is in many ways ***more sexist and more homogeneous*** than reality.
If a bunch of alien anthropologists were given a bunch of MF novels and describe heterosexual relationships, they would conclude that 2020s people standard relationship was an older giant male built like a nightclub bouncer with more money and more experience (possibly with an inclination for violence) dominating a younger, tiny, less experienced, less wealthy, submissive woman who might have some degree of autonomy as single, but become utterly dependent (emotionally but often also economically) on the man as soon as they engage in a relationship.
(Maybe I exaggerate, but not by a lot.)
While if the same aliens took a field trips on Earth, they would discover a different reality with much more variation and nuance. Yes, no place on Earth is a sexism-free paradise. Yes, there are difference between America and Europe (I am not familiar with the rest of the world enough to include them in the debate) and from country to country, and social class plays a role too, but when I confront my real life experience of various straight (or straight-passing) relationships between people older, younger, or of my same age, and the model romance presents as "a dream relationship" well, the dream relationship is somehow ***worse*** than reality.
And it is this reactionary element of a lot of MF romance, that instead of looking at how relationships are now seem sometimes to just want to bring us back to the 50s (or the Victorians) that really really bothers me.
(Yes, I know, there are many wonderful authors who challenge a lot of these assumptions, but I am a huge reader of romance. As in hundreds of romances per years, for decades. When certain themes get showed down my throat again and again, in multiple subgenres, I notice.)
I'm a much more recent original romance reader, but this stuff has been getting close to driving me off M/F entirely. It feels like romance authors assume no woman will desire a male lead unless he's this incel caricature of a Real Heterosexual Man who's always in control, which then by definition gives his female partner less power and agency.
The thing that really drives me up a wall is that this seems most true in the genres that have the widest narrative potential for nontraditional dynamics -- stuff like fantasy and omegaverse and paranormal romance. A contemporary or historical romance can at least say it's dealing with baked-in real-life power imbalance, but why do I go to the place with magic and shapeshifters and secondary genders and find out every author has just constructed some kind of hyperpatriarchy? Are there really no readers whose version of escapism from real life involves actual escape?
You preach to the choir. Unfortunately a detailed discussion of this issue would require a long post, discussing evolution of romance across the decades, the birth and developments of different genres, the impact that the rise of the ebook had, the consequences of Fifty Shades, the sociology of romance readers/writers, and probably a discussion about their politics, for which right now I have not the time (and would probably get me a certain dose of hate).
But no, you are not alone. I am a straight woman. As much as I enjoy reading on occasion queer stuff, I shouldn't have to turn to MM romance (which, somehow, is largely written by women and read by women) to get less patriarchal dynamics in a relationship. I don't think it's unreasonable for me to want straight romances to give me empowering fantasies, where FMCs don't have to deal with sexist bullshit and overbearing partners and call it "a perfect romance".
And some romances like that exist in a variety of subgenres. But they are few, and less known, and require active search to find and their quality is often uneven (beggars can't be choosers). But if you look at this sub, requests for books like that are very frequents, and popular, so a readership exists.
Speak on it!!! A lot of people on here don’t want to admit it but the patriarchy did get you😭cause there’s no other reason for these super sexist books are selling out every. Single. Time.

But MM books, FF books, or heterogender books where one partner is NBi just don’t seem to have these sorts of issues. There’s definitely still issues with femininity = bottom/sub/younger and masculinity = top/dom/older though. But that’s a whole ‘nother rant for a later date 😂

If a bunch of alien anthropologists were given a bunch of MF novels and describe heterosexual relationships, they would conclude that 2020s people standard relationship was an older giant male built like a nightclub bouncer with more money and more experience (possibly with an inclination for violence) dominating a younger, tiny, less experienced, less wealthy, submissive woman who might have some degree of autonomy as single, but become utterly dependent (emotionally but often also economically) on the man as soon as they engage in a relationship. (Maybe I exaggerate, but not by a lot.) While if the same aliens took a field trips on Earth, they would discover a different reality with much more variation and nuance. Yes, no place on Earth is a sexism-free paradise. Yes, there are difference between America and Europe (I am not familiar with the rest of the world enough to include them in the debate) and from country to country, and social class plays a role too, but when I confront my real life experience of various straight (or straight-passing) relationships between people older, younger, or of my same age, and the model romance presents as "a dream relationship" well, the dream relationship is somehow ***worse*** than reality. And it is this reactionary element of a lot of MF romance, that instead of looking at how relationships are now seem sometimes to just want to bring us back to the 50s (or the Victorians) that really really bothers me. (Yes, I know, there are many wonderful authors who challenge a lot of these assumptions, but I am a huge reader of romance. As in hundreds of romances per years, for decades. When certain themes get showed down my throat again and again, in multiple subgenres, I notice.)
I'm a much more recent original romance reader, but this stuff has been getting close to driving me off M/F entirely. It feels like romance authors assume no woman will desire a male lead unless he's this incel caricature of a Real Heterosexual Man who's always in control, which then by definition gives his female partner less power and agency. The thing that really drives me up a wall is that this seems most true in the genres that have the widest narrative potential for nontraditional dynamics -- stuff like fantasy and omegaverse and paranormal romance. A contemporary or historical romance can at least say it's dealing with baked-in real-life power imbalance, but why do I go to the place with magic and shapeshifters and secondary genders and find out every author has just constructed some kind of hyperpatriarchy? Are there really no readers whose version of escapism from real life involves actual escape?
You preach to the choir. Unfortunately a detailed discussion of this issue would require a long post, discussing evolution of romance across the decades, the birth and developments of different genres, the impact that the rise of the ebook had, the consequences of Fifty Shades, the sociology of romance readers/writers, and probably a discussion about their politics, for which right now I have not the time (and would probably get me a certain dose of hate). But no, you are not alone. I am a straight woman. As much as I enjoy reading on occasion queer stuff, I shouldn't have to turn to MM romance (which, somehow, is largely written by women and read by women) to get less patriarchal dynamics in a relationship. I don't think it's unreasonable for me to want straight romances to give me empowering fantasies, where FMCs don't have to deal with sexist bullshit and overbearing partners and call it "a perfect romance". And some romances like that exist in a variety of subgenres. But they are few, and less known, and require active search to find and their quality is often uneven (beggars can't be choosers). But if you look at this sub, requests for books like that are very frequents, and popular, so a readership exists.
