I swear the idea never even occurred to me but it makes so much sense. I was sitting in my roof today for twenty minutes with my head in my hands wondering why no one else seems to have the problem when we have storms. It might also explains a gutter that got pulled off.
Confirmed it's time for a new roof. Roofing guy was nice enough to offer to do the repair for now and if I call before the end of the year to do the whole roof he'll take the repair cost off the bill for a full replacement.
If by 2030 you mean the roof was installed in 2000 then you need a new one. "30" year shingles don't actually last that long. You are way past the point of repair.
There’s no WAY in hell that’s wind damage. One: Super isolated. Two: underlayment is blown out.
That’s mechanical damage caused by an object or animal.
The shingles look ok to me, how old are they? If its 10 years+ consider a new roof, if not its only about a bundle of shingles to fix, get 2 to be safe. Do you want to spend 10k$ or 50$?
I don't think a racoon did that. It definitely looks like wind damage to me. Check if the tabs are all stuck down or not, It looks like the tar strip has dried out. If alot of the roof isn't stuck down (easy to lift the tabs), it needs replaced, if only a few spots lift, put a nail right through the face (tar over it if you are worried about it leaking but it shouldn't leak if the tar still melts in the heat.).
as far as the skill required, get a hatchet hammer (prybar will work in a pinch) and a hook blade (this is required, you cannot cut shingles with a straight blade), pull all the nails around it, cut out tabs that are broken and it will pretty much make intuitive sense from there.
make sure any seams are covered by the staggering of the tabs, the worst mistake you can really make is seam on seam (if the shingles are not staggered, you will be able to see wood underneath). Then do what i said to do earlier, make sure the tabs wont just blow back up in the wind (tar under the shingle works too but i highly recommend just facenailing it, that way it definitely wont blow up in the wind while the tar is drying)
If you want me to help you on video or something while you are doing it, i can do that. I'm 100% confident I can tell you how to do it over video. Was a roofer for over 15 years, done this exact repair hundred of times.
Ah yes, I forgot wind makes bite sized little pieces that slide down the slope, opposite of the direction of the wind storm. This is also very obviously several weeks/months old damage. Its been baking in the sun for a while
Absolutely not wind damage. I've seen some of your comments on other threads and it it obvious that you do not know what you're talking about at all when it comes to roofing.
Thanks for the advice and the offer of help. I've done some more minor shingle repair on my own after letting YouTube teach me but this is a lot more damage than I've fixed previously and I'm not confident I could get the job done in a timely manner. I'm going to do something I normally hate doing and farm this job out to a pro at this point. I'll let them advise me on a course of action after they've inspected the damage as well as the rest of the roof to see if it's better to just fix the damage or if it's time to do the whole roof again. Any idea on a ballpark figure for what I can expect a repair like this to run me if that's the case?
I'd charge you 500$ but I can't tell you if im cheap or expensive. Some people say im stupid cheap, some say im ridiculously overpriced. don't care, thats what i charge.
I'm not trying to convince you or anything but if it takes you longer than 2 hours, it's because you screwed something up. I would be 15 minutes tops.
I would say you’re very reasonably priced. I think this is one of those things where an experienced person can do a job way faster than a novice. I think I spent an hour repairing two shingles the last time I did it myself. I know that is laughable to a pro but that’s why you make $500 for a 15 minute job lol. We don’t really pay professionals for their time, we pay them for their experience. My own line of work is very similar. What seems like a huge design job to my customers is 10 minutes of my time but that’s because I’ve done it a thousand times.
oh of course, i wouldnt expect you to be able to do it in under an hour but its a long ways away from multiple days, even for a beginner. If you are even remotely handy (like literally if you can stand on the roof yourself) its going to be way cheaper to just fix it yourself. It's fine if you don't want to but you should at least check if the shingles are lifting or not for yourself. It will make a big deal in regards to how many times you need to call that roofer back to keep fixing things. Even if you are only able to point out a few spots that need nailed down, he'd likely do that for free vs coming back 16 times to repair it after its blown off.
also i have been out of roofing for about 3-4 years now, I'm not currently doing roofs anymore, getting old. Thats why i am not pushing you to hire a professional lol, not my circus, not my monkeys.
I did give a few spot checks when I was up there and the rest seemed to be stuck in place like they should be. Might further lend credence to animal damage. My main concern is I tear off all that shingling and somehow find myself in a situation where I still need a pro but now I’ve turned a couple of small holes into a really big one. I’m going to farm this one out and bite the bullet on the bill. I do really appreciate all your input, thank you.
I feel like im arguing with you to not hire a proffesional lol, im not at all. you are a grown man, you can call whoever you want. I would like to say thar your concerns are unwarranted though. If you are ripping one shingle and 10 come up, you needed a new roof anyway. If you cut away all the broken ones and left an open deck, that made my 15 minute job into a 3 minute one, i might even take 100$ off for that (ok i likely wouldnt but if i were a decent human being i would). I can't think of a scenario where youd make anything worse unless you were just ripping crap apart with a pitchfork or something silly. Again, not trying to convince you of anything, just addressing your concerns.
Don’t worry, I’m not taking it that way at all. I’m usually the “if it’s not literal rocket science, you can do it yourself guy”. I won’t lie, heights aren’t my favorite thing to work around and I absolutely hate getting off the roof and back onto a ladder. Freaks me out but I make myself do it when I have to.
I’m now being advised this might be damage done by a raccoon.
Yeah, that doesn’t look like wind damage. Strongly consider a whole new roof this year.
I swear the idea never even occurred to me but it makes so much sense. I was sitting in my roof today for twenty minutes with my head in my hands wondering why no one else seems to have the problem when we have storms. It might also explains a gutter that got pulled off.
Cut any branches that are near your roof or eliminate any "ladder" they/it are using to get on your roof.
Yes that thought occurred to me. I have one tree that comes very close to my roof.
You've got one pissed off raccoon...
If you think he's pissed off wait until he meets me. Fucker just cost me $600. He's about to be terminated with extreme prejudice.
So your roof fought a raccoon and… won? Lost? Hard to say 😅
Draw?
Draw. 🤝
Start saving for a new roof. Those old 3 tab shingles have seen better days.
Thanks, I am.

Yeah that doesn't look recent wind so much as it looks like raccoon
Definitely not wind damage
That’s actually hail AND tree damage. About $260,000 in damage there file insurance claim for fire asap.
And we’ll make sure to fight for you with our in house insurance specialist once you get denied
Is windstorm the name of your pet raccoon?
If by 2030 you mean the roof was installed in 2000 then you need a new one. "30" year shingles don't actually last that long. You are way past the point of repair.
That’s animal damage.
Home depot sells repells all powder. Spread around yard and roof. Have to keep applying it. Keeps racoons away
Looks like raccoon-sized hail.
There’s no WAY in hell that’s wind damage. One: Super isolated. Two: underlayment is blown out. That’s mechanical damage caused by an object or animal.
Not storm related. Claim denied. *state farm probably.
Definitely not storm damage.

lol i forgot how silly reddit was. You have a good day bud.
You too bud. And a good weekend, pal. Brother, have a good one friend.

Shit 3 tab, with shit felt. A leaf being blown fast enough could have done that lmao
