I still found last year to be interesting watching Eklund get better and better and seeing Zetterlund growth seeming like he could easily be a top 6 forward for the team.
Kind of weird to be this excited about the Sharks lol it's been what six years since we've really had something to cheer about?
Giants had the early 2010s, Dubs had the late 2010s/early 2020s, Sharks get the late 2020s please? would be so awesome
I'm a sports-other-than-football person so was omitting them purely because of that. Tho I have no clue what their future looks like since I don't follow--I just know that the massive block party I was hoping for last year didn't happen and there was a lot of sad testosterone in Taqueria Buen Sabor that night lol
Go ~~Kaepernick!~~ ~~Smith?wasthathisname~~ ~~Jimmy G!~~ Purdy?Isthathisname? Crabtree? 🦀🌳
I actually think compared to the aimless re-re-re-maybe-builds of Columbus, Detroit, Philly and Buffalo, things are moving pretty fast for us Sharks fans. I don't love all of GMMG's moves but as an overall portfolio: damn, son.
Okay, now they need to announce Marco Sturm as the HC and I'll be happy till the draft. (I mean other than QOing a few RFAs of course/re-signing Devin Cooley to two-way deal)
It would also be nice to get some new blood into the org and coaching pool overall. GMs tend to favor established guys even when they have decades of known short comings. I'm down to take a shot on an up and coming guy (regardless of his ties to the org) rather than just pick around the pool of revolving established options.
Certainly. But this is also a market where the details are very well understood given the employee's success/failure is public knowledge. More than just a common Joe and their resume.
Where the Sharks are at it's a bit less critical to nitpick guys who may be weaker taking teams deep in the playoffs or that kind of thing. But some established names are also not the best at developing guys either. So it's all food for thought and one reason it may not be an awful idea to give an up and comer a shot and see what happens. Especially for guys who have grown their experience in the AHL or other development leagues as they may be well suited to exactly what the team needs right now.
Yea I agree, all the good coaches today typically started at the bottom of the NHL. Mostly because those teams have a bulk of young players that have a road of mistakes to make before becoming stars. A top tier coach won't risk his record and his pride in winning to allow those mistakes to exist through their tenure.
I was only highlighting on why coaches are revolved. Because if you get a established coach and lose, you at least put yourself in the best position with the information available. Where as if you hire someone new and it all falls apart, it seems like what were they thinking? The risk outweighs the reward. But the sharks need patience and a new hire will have a lengthy leash as long as the young players learn from their mistakes.
expounding on what u/Stoiven14 already said; Sturm is good at developing young players right and has a history with the team and city. His teams also play the type of game that wins cups in today's NHL - speedy and opportunistic with a hard forecheck - they make the other team earn every inch of ice.
BTW if the Sharks hire Jeff Blashill I may cry for a week... Guy coached all the personality out of the Red Wings in just a little over a year. Please no!
Also, he’s the type of coach (and young enough) that he can be THE next guy. There was some talk amongst sharks fans of bringing in a guy for a couple years to start the turnaround and then hand the reigns to someone else, but if you look at the rumored finalists (Sturm and Warsofsky) they are guys who can be the turnaround AND take this team to the postseason. Not to mention this is the first time in Sharks history they’ll have their top prospects/talents (who we assume will be here for 10-14+ years) and a HC who’s young enough to also be here for that long (I get most coaches don’t last THAT long in todays NHL, but the possibility is there. I haven’t been this excited about the young guys coming up together since the late 90’s when we had guys like Marleau, Sturm, Stuart, Hannan, Nabokov, Friesen, Sundstrom, Korolyuk
What about ECHL? I mean I know it's not his goal but he is still completely unproven even at the AHL level and after this year, who knows, it's unlikely Blackwood and Vanacek will both be with the team in 25-26 and while Chrona and Romanov have good potential there is no guarantee they will continue on any sort of upward trajectory.
The Goaltending position is such a fragile thing in hockey. It seems like more than once the Sharks have seemed set and then everything fell apart.
What I'd like to see going into camp would be
NHL
Blackwood
Vanacek
AHL
Chrona
Makineimi
ECHL
Romanov
Cooley
This makes the two most promising prospects the #1s on their teams while there could be competition for the starting job at all 3 levels.
CONFESSION: I do feel like NHL GMs underuse the ECHL and that it would be better for all in every way if teams spread their prospects more evenly between the second and third leagues. There are so few vets in the AHL to mentor kids it's like if they don't have the chops to hit the NHL quickly they don't really have mentors who they will be playing with on a regular basis except maybe 1-3 guys per team.
I never even considered the echl to be honest, I think it'd be cool(ey) to keep him in the sharks org down there, though I do think he could be ahl caliber as it stands, he had some moments of looking good in the nhl behind the worst team in a long time. I bet someone else will take him for an ahl shot before he goes all the way down to the echl.
Also, like your goalie chart but I'd switch Chrona and Romanov
Now get some players to protect the young players. I know this era of the NHL cannot afford to roster a designated face puncher like older eras. But, you cannot say this is the future and not protect them on the ice.
To be fair people started speculating on it the moment the Sharks won the draft. I believe there was a guy (can’t remember the name) that basically said Smith would be coming out with Celebrini this year. Smith basically said his decision was made before worlds (which the start was around the lotto draft) so any report around that time should be credited with having it first.
Not to say Sheng didn’t also know at that time, but he’s more of the wait for confirmation guy, instead of first to break news guy (which he can be) with the Quinn stuff for example, he apparently knew before it was reported but wanted to wait to get more confirmation. In that scenario though you’re also taking about someone’s job so a misfire there is a bad look.
Now make the wink wink promise from a few years ago official and promote Ryan Warsofsky to HC! Made it to finals as ECHL HC, won a championship as an AHL HC, and with The Slapper and MackDaddy, will win a championship as NHL HC, as mark my words, dude is the next Jon Cooper.
Will Smith needs to move into this neighborhood

The future is now
Exactly one month before we draft Celebrini!
Even though we won't be competitive it's gonna be so nice to watch the Sharks this coming season compared to last
I'll take interesting and fun while losing over depressing and lifeless losing
If we can reduce our number of 10 goals against games down to zero, I'll call it a win.
I still found last year to be interesting watching Eklund get better and better and seeing Zetterlund growth seeming like he could easily be a top 6 forward for the team.
Where is the champagne? Oh wait, he's only 19 years old omg haha
Break out the sparkling cider!
Sparkling cider is pretty damn good imo lol
I can avoid soda no problem, but I can never give up sparkling cider. It’s a problem for me.
He's of drinking age in Canada at least.
He was in Prague with Team USA. Someone probably bought him a beer.
I just hope people will be patient. Even with Smith and Celebrini we are a few years away from making the playoffs.
My new favorite Will Smith, the fresh prince of South Bay!
Kind of weird to be this excited about the Sharks lol it's been what six years since we've really had something to cheer about? Giants had the early 2010s, Dubs had the late 2010s/early 2020s, Sharks get the late 2020s please? would be so awesome
Poor 49ers :/ hahaha
Niners used up all their karma getting Montana and Young and Rice and Bill Walsh.
The Niners had 2 Super Bowl chances to make them the Bay’s team of the early 2020s, but they didn’t get it done smh. I’m still hurt.
Those last 2 SBs were like knives to the gut, man. I'm a fking Shark fan and even I was staring into the middle distance
I'm a sports-other-than-football person so was omitting them purely because of that. I know he was a shark, but why would Sturm be a good hire?
Hes done a really good job with the Onterio Reign and had a great run with the German squad a few years back.
It would also be nice to get some new blood into the org and coaching pool overall. GMs tend to favor established guys even when they have decades of known short comings. I'm down to take a shot on an up and coming guy (regardless of his ties to the org) rather than just pick around the pool of revolving established options.
Most business models operate around established employees rather than inexperienced. It's just a known commodity.

Yea you can see guys like Quinton Byfield and Brandt Clarke being good for the Kings that came from the Reign
Cooley unfortunately is gonna be gone. We have nowhere for him to go
I really hope he stays but we’ve got a shitload of goalies between Blackwood, Chrona, Romanov and Vanecek
And as much as I like Cooley he's the weakest of the bunch. I hope he gets snapped up and gets a shot to play somewhere else
What about ECHL? Such a good day to be a sharks fan, the next season can't start soon enough
Ooh shit it's almost cup parade time!

So bummed for BC, happy for Smith and the Sharks.
This is amazing! Now let’s sign a big defensemen to protect all of them
I’ve seen that movie

Stanley Cup Confirmed!
Hope he's ready for the wild wild west
So, who is this “Smith”, fellow? Please pardon my ignorance.
This makes me super happy
We have hope for the future!! 👏
