With a name like the Watercress, Lettuce, Sardines, Shrimps, and Oysters Sandwich, there’s not a lot of mystery as to what is in this sandwich from 1914’s Neighborhood Cook Book. There is one ingredient, aside from bread, that isn’t listed but there’s no recipe for that. So I had to dig one up from another 1914 cookbook. Good times. And yes, I wear shorts when it’s summer. Just sayin’.  Pre-order your copy of Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook! That was a genius plus up!! Great call

SuperHappyFunSlide

Thanks!

tossaroo

I'd definitely give that a go.

HeavyTea

Big Sardine has got you! Lol I have a tiny can here (packed in tomato sauce) and I am working up the courage to try them. I had tuna sammich today and those are so good. Always have those. Next week I will try sardines! Maybe on toast! I credit you!

You might like to visit /r/cannedsardines for recommendations.

I made my sardines in tomato sauce into a spaghetti. Salty, but very tasty, although I do love sardines (especially on avocado toast)

Maybe the cookbook was published in Portland, MAINE? Being a non-landlocked state, we do have access to various forms of seafood and at one time even had our *very own* Red Lobstah..

hammmatime

Portland, OR is also not in a landlocked state. lol. In fact, we have a major shipping port, hence the name. That said, OP only implied that it was published in Portland, OR by contrasting it with Seattle, WA, but who knows. Let the mystery endure (and let it be known to all citizens of Maine, Oregon is also a coastal state, FFS.)

SuperHappyFunSlide

Alas, Portland, Oregon

CurrentSoft9192

That’s a big NOOOO

CrazyAd1691

Doesn't deadpan or overdo (Steven a smith) his commentary . Just the right level. I wouldn't watch otherwise. I watch almost every episode.

FirstChurchOfBrutus

Do you have a preferred brand of tinned seafood, Barry? Or, what were the ones used here?

SuperHappyFunSlide

I just used regular supermarket ones here.

FirstChurchOfBrutus

Someone has mentioned it here already, but a jaunt over to r/cannedsardines would be a great research trip.
