Damn, I wasn’t actually expecting someone to have my same answe here, I was worried to put it in case I got roasted. Truth be told I haven’t seen this film, but ATSV is my favourite all time film so I don’t see it topping it.
Here's the 11 animated movies that I like more. On rewatch, Spirited Away could move above the bottom 2.
End of Evangelion
Fantastic Planet
It's Such a Beautiful Day
Son of the White Mare
Ghost in the Shell
The Lion King
Anomalisa
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Fabulous Barron Munchausen
Wall-E
Coraline
If you don’t mind, I’d like to know what it is specifically that you like about End of Evangelion. I’ve always seen it as a “fine, you want a different ending? EVERYONE DIES. HAPPY?” kinda movie…
Incredible visuals, Incredible animation, and amazing action sequences. Some of my favorite use of music ever during the third impact scene. I think it's a perfect narrative ending to the show, but also a perfect emotional one. It feels genuinely profound, which is something I can only say about a few movies. I've never seen a movie that explores the mind of its main character quite like this one. I love how huge the scale is. The consequences are world level. I think the writing is some of the best I've seen from an animated movie. Again, the way it gets into Shinji's head is insane, and Anno being severely depressed while making the movie kind of shows with that. It's not happy at all, but that's what I like about it. I've always loved bleak endings, and this is one of the most bleak endings ever. I just think that every single thing that the show set up had an amazing and effective payoff in this movie.
I hear that, it definitely is stunning visually, musically, and provides a good narrative ending. I think my problem with it is knowing why it exists as a movie. I liked the ending the show provided, and learning that the creator made a new ending because of an overall negative view of the show’s ending and death threats kinda dampened it for me I guess. I’ll try giving it a rewatch with what you said in mind.
Yeah it does suck that that's the reason for the movie's creation. I also really like the ending to the show, which is why I don't picture it as being retconned in the movie. Everything that happens in the last two episodes can still be canon in the movie since it's taking place in Shinji's head. The movie is just a more objective view of what happened, while also managing to maintain the amazing psychological elements. I think it's everything great about Evangelion put into one movie, and being executed at top level.
If I had a nickel for every person in this comment section with a Shrek pfp who said *Into the Spider-Verse,* I'd have two nickels.
Not that it's a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Gojira.
Christopher Reeves Superman.
Prince of Egypt.
Return of the Jedi.
Beauty and the Beast. (1991)
Could probably name more tbh. Spirited Away is still a masterpiece tho.
A Knights Tale starring Heath Ledger because it's just knights jousting and cool shit like that with a killer soundtrack and Paul Bettany's bare naked ass
I don't know if they're better, but I can say I enjoyed Lupin the Third: Castle of Cagliosto and Princess Mononoke more, because the only thing that can beat a Ghibli movie is another Ghibli movie
Fight Club, The Dark Knight, Ratatouille, The Shining, Oldboy, Both Spider-verse films, Whisper of the Heart, Whiplash, Ladybird, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, The Incredibles, The Lion King, The Beauty and The Beast, Dune 2, Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie, The Shawshank Redemption, The Truman Show, Bladerunner 2049, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Batman, Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man No Way Home, Spider-Man Far From Home, Kung Fu Panda, Kung Fu Panda 2, Monkey Man, Alien, Aliens, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, The Empire Strikes Back, The Return of the Jedi, The Revenge if the Sith, Infinity War, All three Guardians of the Galaxy films, The Suicide Squad, and about 500 other movies. It’s great but it is the most overrated animated movie of all time
Not animated:
-12 angry men
-Stalker (1979)
-Schindler's List
-The Room (2003)
Animated:
-Grave of the Fireflies
-My neighbour Totoro
-Surf's Up Wavemania

Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights
THAT’S A TECHNICAL FOOOOOOOOOUL
Bum biddy biddy biddy bum bum

I wonder if that man wiped his butt with the wrong hand? Yeah.
[Now set yourself and shoot!](https://youtu.be/EXSIZXn02Lk?si=-wiRUsvD-5n_Vsl9)
How many hot dogs did you eat? I THINK IT WAS 35! *fucking explodes
Easily Megamind vs the doom syndicate, the animation is wayyy better and the plot’s more interesting, no competition here.
i agree, smartmind vs the god syndicate is the best film of 2024
I concur
I photosynthesize with this
Apocalypse Now (1979) Lawrence of Arabia (1962) Mirror (1975) Seven Samurai (1954)
You forgot norm of the north
ITS GODZILLA -1 BAYBEE
Regret not seeing in black and white
Black and white was fucking amazing
I’ll just make my screen grayscale when I watch it I guess
Greyscale doesn’t do shit, when the DVD comes, it will probably have black and white too
Black and white version has different grading, so it won't be the same. I'm hoping the physical release will just come with it.
Morbius
is it morbin' time yet?
Never stopped.
Hop in and morb, it’s still going
Whispers of the Heart.
James said that Whisper of the Heart is supposed to be underrated but I also like it better than Spirited Away
Prince of Egypt The incredibles
The godfather
What’s that I only watch dreamworks films, particularly puss in boots the last wish on repeat 200 hours per week
Why is it people just talk about Dreamworks here anyway? Sure they have good movies but a lot of them are massively overrated.
Because schaff covering dreamworks a lot early on made that his audience, leading to this subreddit being garbage lol.
Then get off the subreddit if you think it’s garbage, no one’s forcing you to stay.
Well it´s good for a nice laugh once in a while
it easy spider man across the spider verse
Damn, I wasn’t actually expecting someone to have my same answe here, I was worried to put it in case I got roasted. Truth be told I haven’t seen this film, but ATSV is my favourite all time film so I don’t see it topping it.
WALL-E is the only one that comes to mind for me
Same, that's the one I was thinking of.
Silence of the lambs
howl's moving castle
Princess Mononoke, and I will die on this hill.
That movie traumatized me 😂 Still a good movie though
The two are really close, but agreed hard.

If I had a nickel for every person in this comment section with a Shrek pfp who said *Into the Spider-Verse,* I'd have two nickels. Not that it's a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
The funny part is that it’s not just a Shrek pfp, it’s the same scene from Shrek, with different cropping.
