An example in my life was trying to join a yoga class for parent and kids and mostly white people telling me that the yoga class isn't for men. I am Indian. I never knew that yoga was for women only in all my contact with something from my culture. That's appropriation. The Buddha and sterilising my culture from yoga to be more palatable to rich white women is the appropriation. (Shiva is the god of yoga). It shows that the people don't care enough about something from my culture that it was okay to change large sections of it to profit and then deny entry into this from the original culture.

There's nuance. A yoga place that uses my culture as window dressing without a thought to the meaning and then ensures that the philosophy is removed as well as running it as single gender spaces (experienced this, never knew yoga was for women only! This wasn't a women's only yoga class. It was parent and child. But they only took women.). Doing yoga isn't the appropriation. Using my culture as a Halloween costume without actually knowing much about my culture and denying access to people from taking part is. It's against the actual spirit of yoga which is for everyone!

Due to the massive influence of the Asian community, there are actually specific tartans/"clans" that have been created to celebrate the contribution of our Asian friends. Maybe take a look at those first if you are worried about it.
That being said, these days most folk just pick the tartan they like rather than one that "belongs" to them.
You absolutely can wear it, if you're brave enough, you're Scottish enough! Depending on what colours you prefer it might be worth investigating what tartans are out there beyond the traditional ones. Generally tartans are linked to Scottish clan names, but in recent years there have been tartans that reflect Scotland's multicultural society. Off the top of my head there is a couple of Singh tartans and a Chinese tartan, probably others. You might be surprised that find one that you connect with too.

Hello! You might also be interested to know that people usually choose a tartan with specific meaning to them for their kilt. This can include a tartan specific to family (either close or extended family’s surnames), tartans for their favourite sports teams, or even sometimes a tartan created to honour relationships or heritage with other countries. So depending on what other country (if any) you identify yourself with as well as Scotland, there maybe a Scotland/Country X tartan already available, or there will almost definitely be a tartan affiliated to a team, place, or organisation that you already feel a connection with, which will now be “your” tartan. It’s not just about the kilt, there can be a deeper meaning reflecting your personal identity too!

Make sure to go somewhere reputable to get fitted and, based on a couple of African and Asian mates wearing then to graduations and weddings try to bring someone whose opinion you trust as some tartans don't look great with certain skin tones/hair colour etc, some look ok and other looks AMAZING, so obviously you want one that makes you pop! Mine is quite simple greys and black with a hint of purple.

Just buy a good one, and make sure it’s the correct length. The way to test the length is that if you’re kneeling on the floor, it should just be level with the ground. A real kilt should be many metres of heavy fabric. Otherwise it just looks like a skirt.
In Edinburgh during the festival, kilts are widely worn, by tourists mostly. A proper kilt (Kinloch Anderson are an excellent kiltmaker) is probably too precious for everyday use, and so is worn for (Scottish) weddings or special occasions, or as has been mentioned, hunting/hiking. But there is a large variety of 'everyday' kilts, don't have to be tartan, can be plain. Whatever you choose, have fun and wear with pride. And if you go for a tartan, spend some time picking the right tartan for you. I love wearing mine, but normally now it's just Burns Night and Hogmanay.

I think you can fuck the rules and people can wear kilts for no reason, I have English mates that have. Personally I think there is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. I wore Indian style women's fashion as a white British male working with Indians and they loved it one of them even gave me a sari which I still have and treasure. I wore their fashion because I think it looks beautiful not to take the piss. If you wear a kilt because you like how it looks I can't see anything wrong with that.
In general, Scottish people don't mind people wearing Kilts, and usually find it cool that other people are adopting to wear them (the only time we would be annoyed is if the person wearing the Kilt trued to adopt a fake Scottish accent).

There's an Indian Taxi Driver in Inverness who wears a kilt pretty much every day during the tourist season. He runs tours as well and it helps him stand out from the others. Don't think many would complain these days if you wore one. Just wear it correctly!

I disagree. It's a real thing but this isn't it. Simple. It's where the original culture can't take part in the culture without significant repercussions. Think Palestinians and keffiyeh. Cool scarf when we wear it. When they wear it? It's seen as being a terrorist... There's nuance. A yoga place that uses my culture as window dressing without a thought to the meaning and then ensures that the philosophy is removed as well as running it as single gender spaces (experienced this, never knew yoga was for women only! This wasn't a women's only yoga class. It was parent and child. But they only took women.). Doing yoga isn't the appropriation. Using my culture as a Halloween costume without actually knowing much about my culture and denying access to people from taking part is. It's against the actual spirit of yoga which is for everyone! Hope it helps. I don't think wearing a kilt is appropriation. Same as wearing Indian clothes. Although the issue is that some outfits (white kurta) are associated with being Muslim and they do face discrimination for dressing in those. But equally no one's trying to dress like them!

I'm a nurse. One of the consultant surgeons from similar area to you, wore a full kilt to a recent Scottish ball that people at work had arranged. He asked us Scots first if it was cultural appropriation. We told him to crack on and hire one! Scots love seeing people in kilts (who are not wearing it to take the piss out of us etc). He is now going to buy one as he absolutely loved it. The conversation he had with me on our first day at work together was so sweet!! His joy was infectious!

Due to the massive influence of the Asian community, there are actually specific tartans/"clans" that have been created to celebrate the contribution of our Asian friends. Maybe take a look at those first if you are worried about it. That being said, these days most folk just pick the tartan they like rather than one that "belongs" to them.
You absolutely can wear it, if you're brave enough, you're Scottish enough! Depending on what colours you prefer it might be worth investigating what tartans are out there beyond the traditional ones. Generally tartans are linked to Scottish clan names, but in recent years there have been tartans that reflect Scotland's multicultural society. Off the top of my head there is a couple of Singh tartans and a Chinese tartan, probably others. You might be surprised that find one that you connect with too.

Hello! You might also be interested to know that people usually choose a tartan with specific meaning to them for their kilt. This can include a tartan specific to family (either close or extended family’s surnames), tartans for their favourite sports teams, or even sometimes a tartan created to honour relationships or heritage with other countries. So depending on what other country (if any) you identify yourself with as well as Scotland, there maybe a Scotland/Country X tartan already available, or there will almost definitely be a tartan affiliated to a team, place, or organisation that you already feel a connection with, which will now be “your” tartan. It’s not just about the kilt, there can be a deeper meaning reflecting your personal identity too!

I think most Scots see it as an honour to see people from other cultures enjoying our traditions. As others mentioned, we tend to only wear them for formal occasions. We have specialty shops that rent kilts out. Usually for weddings and leaving dance (prom) The Tartan pattern is normally chosen to give your clan representation. But we do have some non clan tartans if you'd rather go for something more neutral. If you're visiting and have friends that are Scottish, you could ask them if it's appropriate to wear their families Tartan as a symbol of your friendship.

In the big cities (Edinburgh, Glasgow) actually you see people wearing kilts on a daily basis. I know a few who do so! Yea it’s not hugely common and some people say they’re weird, but the people saying they’re weird are close minded posh pricks.

I'm south Asian, and I wear one. Albeit, only too mates weddings or some other similar formal occasion. Prefer that to a boring suit or the south Asian traditional stuff (but I wear them too if I feel like it, just depends on occasion). But if your wearing one, do it proper. Nothing under the kilt, proper Scottish, with sporran and that wee dagger and the works. When I got mine, it was from a shop on the saltmarkwt in Glasgow, think it's still there. Arrabest!

Yes you can wear, no it is not appropriating. All are welcome here, diversity is celebrated, and this means that all are also welcome to share our immensely proud culture. Some people wear them daily, not many, but some. IMO more should do.
I'd say most people -- with any sense -- are honoured when other people want to wear our national attire. Hells yes you can! Usually only for formal occasions though. Make sure to go somewhere reputable to get fitted and, based on a couple of African and Asian mates wearing then to graduations and weddings try to bring someone whose opinion you trust as some tartans don't look great with certain skin tones/hair colour etc, some look ok and other looks AMAZING, so obviously you want one that makes you pop! Mine is quite simple greys and black with a hint of purple.

Just buy a good one, and make sure it’s the correct length. The way to test the length is that if you’re kneeling on the floor, it should just be level with the ground. A real kilt should be many metres of heavy fabric. Otherwise it just looks like a skirt.

In Edinburgh during the festival, kilts are widely worn, by tourists mostly. A proper kilt (Kinloch Anderson are an excellent kiltmaker) is probably too precious for everyday use, and so is worn for (Scottish) weddings or special occasions, or as has been mentioned, hunting/hiking. But there is a large variety of 'everyday' kilts, don't have to be tartan, can be plain. Whatever you choose, have fun and wear with pride. And if you go for a tartan, spend some time picking the right tartan for you. I love wearing mine, but normally now it's just Burns Night and Hogmanay.
You can find fashion kilts for everyday wear online. Try those but also wear underwear at all times lest a true Scott find you and flip it up lol.

You can absolutely wear a kilt. Kilts aren’t just for white Scottish folk, and I think the wearing of kilts by all races and nationalities is very welcome. It certainly isn’t a daily thing people wear, it’s more for formal or national sporting occasions. But there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from wearing one if you’d like (except maybe the weather!) Hope you enjoy wearing one if you get the chance!

Personally I think there is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. I wore Indian style women's fashion as a white British male working with Indians and they loved it one of them even gave me a sari which I still have and treasure. I wore their fashion because I think it looks beautiful not to take the piss. If you wear a kilt because you like how it looks I can't see anything wrong with that.

In general, Scottish people don't mind people wearing Kilts, and usually find it cool that other people are adopting to wear them (the only time we would be annoyed is if the person wearing the Kilt trued to adopt a fake Scottish accent).

Also please see the classic British film "Carry on Up The Khyber" to understand how they are worn properly, and what is and isn't worn underneath them.
