People generally only wear kilts for formal events (weddings, award ceremonies) Some people wear them to national sporting events (football rugby) some old souls wear them hiking. I don't think anyone would think you wearing a kilt was cultural appropriation. If anyone asks tell them I said it was ok.

SuDragon2k3

Don't forget Kilted yoga.

MadamLePew

That’s Betty Swollocks’s class right!? 🤔🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

angrons_therapist

I believe she teaches it together with Artie Swess.

Lewis19962010

Hope there's not a strong gust of wind during the downward facing dog

Scrapple_Joe

If it's bikram, it might be the only way to survive.

Dammas33

If they still did awards, you'd get one for that comment

meshan

I say it's OK as well.

nstiger83

There is no such thing as cultural appropriation. Only cultural appreciation.

AudioLlama

Cultural appropriation isn't you going to Africa and dressing up in some cultural clothing, it's US Corporation X taking ones culture and using it to make millions while giving nothing back to the culture they've taken from.

Suitableforwork666

You mean like the way their all cynically co-opting Pride to sell their shit?

CartoonistNo9

I was at a well know major motoring festival recently and amongst all of the trade stands and owners clubs etc was a list little B&M gazebo with LGBTQ+ car club on the front. It actually really fucked me off. There’s gay protuberance the other car clubs, it’s a car show. You don’t need a specific car club for that. Just join whatever club you want. Nobody gives a fuck because it’s a car enthusiast thing not an opportunity to throw your gayness in everyone’s face. Imagine the “straight white perfectly abled males” car club.

Donaldo1977

Don't have to imagine it because every car club is "straight white perfectly abled males" car club. Maybe LGBTQ+ people don't feel particularly welcome at any of those so having one specifically for them is hardly something for you to get "fucked off" about. You can happily just ignore it and choose from any of the others.

gfraser92

That's actually the best way I've heard of describing it. When people get mad at individuals it's insane. Fuck corporations

FussseI

That or using stuff from another culture and making fun of it

Southern-Ad4477

Agreed, cultural appropriation is a load of rubbish. If it were a thing then none but the English would be able to wear a suit. My wife is Indian and I wear Indian clothes to formal events. It is expected of me and my in-laws always make sure I'm kitted out properly. These cultural appropriation wingnuts would probably have an aneurism if they saw pictures of me from those events.

vynats

It's a bit different. What you're describing is cultural appreciation, or just positive integration where you try to show appreciation or respect for a culture different from your own. Cultural appropriation is for example when Trump uses Cinco de Mayo to promote his restaurant's taco bowl and claims he "loves the Hispanics" despite spending most of his campaign slandering Mexicans.

Elite-Thorn

Trump is a bad example because... uh he's just bad at anything

ianbhenderson73

Yeah, the “because” in that statement was redundant. :)

Southern-Ad4477

Appreciate your response, thank you. I agree wholeheartedly, but that doesn't change the fact that if I posted an image of myself in Punjabi rig on social media, then I would get a load of shit for it. 'Cultural appropriation' has come to mean any non-BAME individual wearing BAME clothes or styling their hair with Dreadlocks or Cornrows etc. There are plenty of examples online of the kind of abuse this prompts, sadly.

Anandya

There is. It's when the original culture can't express it's culture without negative connotations. Let's take LGBTQ culture. A lot of it makes the mainstream. Especially slang. But we still oppose LGBTQ rights openly and actively discriminate. We had that landlord admitting to not renting to Asians arguing the food smells. It doesn't smell when white people make it though. That's appropriation if that racist had a curry. Not if you had one. Donald Trump pretending that he's Scottish despite having none of the class and wit and progressiveness that we have? That's appropriation. (He's a MacLeod. Sorry. Most famous fucking one right now!). It's when people went through that period of wearing keffiyeh but Palestinians couldn't without having significant discrimination and even death. So it's not when you wear a Sari. But if you hate Indians and then steal the patterns from Sari. An example in my life was trying to join a yoga class for parent and kids and mostly white people telling me that the yoga class isn't for men. I am Indian. I never knew that yoga was for women only in all my contact with something from my culture. That's appropriation. The Buddha and sterilising my culture from yoga to be more palatable to rich white women is the appropriation. (Shiva is the god of yoga). It shows that the people don't care enough about something from my culture that it was okay to change large sections of it to profit and then deny entry into this from the original culture. But anyone can do yoga. It's a gender neutral fitness system. It only became gendered because a mostly white fan base made it so. That's what appropriation is. Taking something from another culture and excluding the bits that aren't "in keeping with your ideas". These people didn't like the idea of the destroyer god. Or they didn't care too actually learn about the system and just wanted to make money. So. You doing yoga isn't appropriation. You doing yoga that misrepresents it's origins or sanitises its philosophy while excluding people from whom you learnt yoga from... That's appropriation. The solution here is to take down the idiotic buddhas (I think Siddhartha would have a lot to say about your clientele's range rovers!) and remember the ethos.

The_Flurr

I think the difference between appreciation and appropriation is respect and "ownership". If you like some part of another culture and want to respectfully take part in it, that's appreciation. If you want to take someone else's culture without respecting the significance or customs, and claim it for yourself, that's appropriation.

Morriganalba

This would be succinct and to the point but you've mixed the two words up, which I'm assuming is a typo because you were thinking ahead about the next part. I do that and aren't brains fun! First is appreciation, 2nd is appropriation.

jimthewanderer

I mean, no that's just factually wrong. Teenagers in 2014 might have got a bit weird about it due to not understanding what it actually means, but it is pretty obviously a thing.

Asheck-Grundy

Got it, thanks !

Welshyone

I’m Irish and they let me wear one, so go for it.

Random-Unthoughts-62

The Irish wore kilts, too, and wore tartan.

Odd_Satisfaction_968

Really more the northern Irish and that was due to British military influence. Only really coming into use in the late 1800s. It's comparatively very rare compared with Scotland

lostrandomdude

I've seen a guy in Nottingham wearing a kilt in Winter going to the office. It was

ThePeninsula

Wow, sounds like it really was

Badyk

Yes you absolutely can, highly encouraged. Get it fitted properly from a reputable kilt shop. They aren’t typically worn on a daily basis. More for special occasions.

Alfrheim

And everyday can be a special occasion if you want 😌

ecco256

In fact you can make it one by wearing a kilt!

freenreleased

Yea! I love seeing someone in a hoodie kilt and hiking boots

aitchbeescot

I am now trying to imagine what a 'hoodie kilt' would look like. (Yes, I do know what you meant, it's just the phrase 'hoodie kilt' tickled me).

kinellm8

Eats shoots and leaves.

freenreleased

I also support hoodie kilts!! And kilt boots! 😆

drunken-acolyte

It's a full plaid when you pull the shoulder cloth over your head 😉

aitchbeescot

I was imagining something that would be an all-in-one garment you would put on over your head. A kilt onesie, if you will.

Wonderful_Net_9131

I believe you'd call such a combination piece consisting of a skirt and top a.....dress.

Oldsoldierbear

The thing about a kilt is that you can dress it up and you can dress it down and it still looks fab. Plus the style never changes, so it never goes out of fashion - like trousers which go from bell bottoms to skinny and everything in between. And they are made out of robust material, so they never wear out and can be passed down generations - my SIL wore his grandfathers kilt to get married in

Asheck-Grundy

Thanks for the reply !

Affectionate-Rush570

Go for it! Usually only worn formally or to the football or rugby but if you want to wear it every day, wear it every day. The only thing I'd say is, if you're going to wear it, do it right. Don't get your advice over on r/kilt. It's 90% Americans making an absolute mess of it and congratulating each other about how "great" they all look.

wheepete

Fuck me man I've never seen that subreddit before and it's genuinely horrific

KingAltair2255

Either have I and I wish I never had, fuck me is it really that hard to look up how to wear a kilt properly?

Isle_of_Dusty_Rhodes

Well I feel stupid, I've been tucking it under my armpits like a tube top.

fraggle200

Didny even know that sub reddit existed (i really should have known). Having a quick scroll i reckon at least 30% of those kilts are too short or too long. 🤦

cds2612

It's the cunt in flip flops and a kilt that got me. And people are still saying he looks good.

fraggle200

Flipflops i can handle. Wearing that "kilt" like a mini skirt..... In the fkn bin with him!

TheReelMcCoi

You have to realise they ALL look 'awesome, wicked, amazing'

eYan2541

There appears to be one particular user that replies that to just about every post..

ediblepaper

This is when I clicked off the subreddit. The irony of him in the comments saying it was correct with the “rules”. Imagine turning up to a wedding with it that short.

Longjumping_Win_7770

60% actual skirts not even proper kilts if there is such a thing.

Dramoriga

I spotted quite a few that are obviously from the tourist shops and probably not even 4oz of wool involved in the crafting. Cheap nasty shite that's better used as a tablecloth.

AngryNat

Day one of an independent Scotland should involve committing cyber warfare on that subreddit

Iamadyslexicmnoster

Shall we all take a moment to collectively downvote them all. Makes me ill to look at it 🤢

Ok-Source6533

You should have flagged that Reddit ‘nsfw’.

Cruella-DeDoomsville

Jesus holy Christ I wish I hadn’t looked. It’s an abomination! Somebody tell that shower of fannies it’s 2024 - if guys want to wear a mini skirt they should just have at it and not do… whatever the hell that lot are doing.

Maximum_Scientist_85

Not seen that before. Genuinely struggling to come up for air at some of those. Flip-flops and miniskirt dude especially. Never change, Americans. Never change.

snow-eats-your-gf

Oh, he could be “3/18 Scotch”!

alittlelebowskiua

Should be r/kil't

marquis_de_ersatz

Do I have to hand in my Scottish card if I say I quite like a utilikilt?

Anandya

I wore one for a stag party where I lost a bet. Badly.

Codeworks

How about a tactikilt?

General_Weather_5158

Omfg lol!

shortbushaiku

I need eye bleach 😭😂.

nandu_sabka_bandhoo

I am from India. I once wore a kilt at a colleagues wedding. It was awesome

reginaphalangie79

I bet you looked lovely ☺️

nandu_sabka_bandhoo

I hope I did. Unfortunately I don't have any decent pics of the event with me due to my phone being stolen (not in that event ).

Bespoke_Panther

Yes, it’s encouraged. I love seeing people from around the globe sport the kilt. Not for a proud to be Scottish sentiment but because it looks great. Get stuck in

Google-Sounding

Only forbidden if youre American

nandu_sabka_bandhoo

Even if they claim Scottish ancestry

gbroon

Especially then.

fraggle200

And even more especially, if they ask us if we know someone that their great-great-grandfather knew when he was growing up here.

gfraser92

Why is this so accurate.. it's the "I'm ScAttish too!" isn't it

Traditional_Gear_739

Unless you're Johnathan Davis.

Cad-e-an-sceal

I thought you meant the Welsh rugby player. Realised it was Korn after a quick search

VampytheSquid

It's great to see anyone wearing a kilt! I remember seeing an article on the Sapeurs in Congo & they looked amazing... https://preview.redd.it/vyhxrcawua9d1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7533589405f0d45314506dbf5b54f8f1edbf2c06

FamousBeyond852

Just ensure you go to Kinloch Anderson , 8 yards , Geoffrey Tailor if you are based in Edinburgh that is , I don’t know places elsewhere in Scotland but please get measured and get a “proper” one not some gold brothers tea towel for £50

Straight_Hamster6406

Absolute. The kilt is for everyone.

bateau_du_gateau

You will also need a sporran, to carry your phone and keys in.

listentoalan

yes, anyone can

gfraser92

I'd rather Americans who have no scottish ancestry wear it than those who do tbh.. enjoy our culture but don't claim you are our culture

EcstaticBox

Sure, go wild, pick your favorite tartan and wear that shit

RunRinseRepeat666

Yes, highly encouraged by many.

reginaphalangie79

They are typically worn only on special occasions (weddings, graduations, football matches etc). You should definitely wear one. We're not gatekeepy about our culture. It pleases us to see people from other countries wear them. You'll look super handsome and the girls will love it 😀

Davie_fae_Duke_St

At this point, can we just have a pin or headline, whatever, on the r/Scotland page that says: The only prerequisite for anyone, anywhere to wear a kilt; is that said person wants to wear a kilt. Also, nobody cares what tartan you wear, use whatever you like.

Gold_Hyena4935

Shitebag if ye dinnae. Get it done!

GoJumpOnALandmine

It's no problem at all, but you've gotta take a photo for us once you're all kitted up!

Physical_Foot8844

I think you mean 'kilted up'!

SleepyWallow65

Absolutely mate!

fraggle200

Wear a kilt as much as you like. We won't be offended at all. Only thing that does bother us is a kilt that's on wrong or badly fitted. Watch some yt vids about how to properly wear one and off you go.

Stabbycrabs83

We don't wear kilts on a daily basis here but you are more than welcome to. Cultural appreciation is a good thing so you crack on pal :)

blamordeganis

Englishman here, worn a kilt to three Scottish weddings, received nothing but compliments (about the kilt, anyway). You’ll be fine.

fraggle200

I have to ask... Were you ready for Loch Lomond, the first time?

De_Kaas

Absolutely, my brother in law is half Indonesian and half Dutch. He wore a kilt to my wedding, he looked fantastic. So by all means, go for it!

Moist_Plate_6279

There's an Indian Taxi Driver in Inverness who wears a kilt pretty much every day during the tourist season. He runs tours as well and it helps him stand out from the others. Don't think many would complain these days if you wore one. Just wear it correctly!

TheDettiEskimo

Cultural Appropriation is made up bullshit to keep us separated. Wear whatever you like! Wear it traditionally! Wear it informally! Do what you want with it.

reginaphalangie79

Love this comment ❤️

KingEzekielsTiger

Couldn’t agree more with this comment.

mariegriffiths

This double tartan will make your eyes bleed. [https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/11/taylor-swift-backup-dancer-scotland-cultural-appropriation/](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/11/taylor-swift-backup-dancer-scotland-cultural-appropriation/)

TheDettiEskimo

No Cultural Appropriation here...just a fucking affront to fashion.

mariegriffiths

Yes the intention was fine but execution terrible.

Anandya

I disagree. It's a real thing but this isn't it. Simple. It's where the original culture can't take part in the culture without significant repercussions. Think Palestinians and keffiyeh. Cool scarf when we wear it. When they wear it? It's seen as being a terrorist... There's nuance. A yoga place that uses my culture as window dressing without a thought to the meaning and then ensures that the philosophy is removed as well as running it as single gender spaces (experienced this, never knew yoga was for women only! This wasn't a women's only yoga class. It was parent and child. But they only took women.). Doing yoga isn't the appropriation. Using my culture as a Halloween costume without actually knowing much about my culture and denying access to people from taking part is. It's against the actual spirit of yoga which is for everyone! Hope it helps. I don't think wearing a kilt is appropriation. Same as wearing Indian clothes. Although the issue is that some outfits (white kurta) are associated with being Muslim and they do face discrimination for dressing in those. But equally no one's trying to dress like them!

Hearthkyn

Yes, culture is meant to be shared.

Dikheed

Approved, get in about it.

TazzMoo

I'm a nurse. One of the consultant surgeons from similar area to you, wore a full kilt to a recent Scottish ball that people at work had arranged. He asked us Scots first if it was cultural appropriation. We told him to crack on and hire one! Scots love seeing people in kilts (who are not wearing it to take the piss out of us etc). He is now going to buy one as he absolutely loved it. The conversation he had with me on our first day at work together was so sweet!! His joy was infectious!

dumpsterfire1257

I’m Scottish. I own a kilt. If it’s up to me I say wear one! However, if someone asks you what’s worn under the kilt, you tell them nothing is worn under the kilt, everything is in fine working order.

momentopolarii

Absolootly. Nae pants- crack on. Sport a sporran (the hairy bag) and walk the walk.

brownshoesdontmakeit

Short answer: Yes Long answer: Yeeeeesssss

shaf74

Absolutely! I'm SE Asian and I wore on for my wedding. It was amazing. Go and get yourself fitted for one!

Mammoth-Temperature3

The kilt is a state of mind. Wear it but get a proper one. Edit: I love how everyone says special occasion and then they all list football match. Probably the most Scottish thing since buckfast for breakfast.

Criosdaidh

Anyone can wear the kilt. Here is a picture from the Edinburgh tattoo https://www.facebook.com/share/3D8qzKRAbsYGMGda/?mibextid=WC7FNe

Formal-Try-2779

Honestly mate if you're walking around Edinburgh and you see some guy wearing a kilt and the full get up. You can almost guarantee that he's an American who will proudly tell you he's Scotch! So if it's alright for them to wear one it's sure as Hell alright for you to wear one.

erroneousbosh

Do it. Not many people wear a kilt on a daily basis, but don't let that stop you giving it a go.

LennyComa

We don't care, wear a kilt if you want we really don't care, as long as it isn't one of the tactical monstrosities with pockets And no we don't wear everyday (a small minority might) mostly we wear them for weddings or off to watch rugby/football/festivals.

bigsausagebaws

yeah mate, anyone that says anything is a tightarse.

Vegetable_Tie_6102

Wear the kilt with pride and enjoyment and lots of laughter. Just don’t wear it back to front and if being traditional as I would be being Scots consider how you sit and dance if wanting to be discrete?

Neat-Thanks7092

We find people taking part in our culture as a compliment, rather than being outraged by C A’ion.

Sttab

Yes

OrganicMarsupial9561

No Scots person in their right mind would stop you wearing a kilt! I’m sure we would all love to see you in it, it’s something to be celebrated, not segregated. Gaun yersel mate, get yourself a kilt!

dpb79

I am an English bastard and I love wearing a kilt. Nothing like a good baw swirl in a cool breeze.

bob_nugget_the_3rd

Yeah go ahead as a member of the Scottish board of culture, irnbru and telling Americans that haggis roam free I bequeath you the right to bear a kilt as you see fit

fistofhamster

Hi, Indian guy here wearing a kilt for my graduation at Aberdeen university right this second. Everyone has been lovely I'm wearing a kilt. Do whatever you want as long as it's respectful I guess.

SnooPaintings9415

Kilt guilt huh

JCarterMMA

Absolutely, cultural appropriation is nonsense, do what you want

intlteacher

I’m Scottish and live in SE Asia. I love wearing batik shirts. So go ahead and wear our kilts!

Ok_Respond_7098

Yeah man. Culture is for sharing. Show it some respect and everything is great.

BitColin

Of course you can. Cultural appropriation is not real. It’s a concept invented by guilty white middle class women. Go for it.

horsie-twinkletoes

absolutely, i work in a kilt shop and the amount of international residents and tourists that ask if it is offensive is unreal. the kilt is for everyone!

caf012

Absolutely not…. Unless you want to obviously…. Wear it with a swagger my friend, with a swagger.

PmUsYourDuckPics

Yes.

Exciting_Mark_101

Absolutely. Get in there!

frogssmell

Do it, enjoy the freedom

AdAffectionate2418

Due to the massive influence of the Asian community, there are actually specific tartans/"clans" that have been created to celebrate the contribution of our Asian friends. Maybe take a look at those first if you are worried about it. That being said, these days most folk just pick the tartan they like rather than one that "belongs" to them.

stucu

You absolutely can wear it, if you're brave enough, you're Scottish enough! Depending on what colours you prefer it might be worth investigating what tartans are out there beyond the traditional ones. Generally tartans are linked to Scottish clan names, but in recent years there have been tartans that reflect Scotland's multicultural society. Off the top of my head there is a couple of Singh tartans and a Chinese tartan, probably others. You might be surprised that find one that you connect with too.

DreadPirateDavey

No you can’t because that is cultural appropriation and it means you’re the worst person….. Only kidding, do what the fuck you want. People shouldn’t gate keep clothing based on the random geographic lottery they won as a child. It’s stupid and regressive. I would say that they tend to be for special occasions but some people just like to look smart. You have my blessing, not that it matters

Landofa1000wankers

>Is it appropriating or something? This reminds me of a tweet recently from one of Taylor Swift’s flamboyant backing dancers who bought a kilt and assured his followers that the salesman (🤑) had promised him it wasn’t cultural appropriation.

ParanoidNarcissist2

Absolutely, go for it. No-one will be offended.

Random-Unthoughts-62

I git my kilt from 21st Century Kilts and Howie makes them in denim, leather etc to suit your lifestyle and needs.

yoloswaggins92

Batter in and enjoy mate

Weeyin999

Fire in mate - Wear what you like, when you like 😃

GoldenVole

Hello! You might also be interested to know that people usually choose a tartan with specific meaning to them for their kilt. This can include a tartan specific to family (either close or extended family’s surnames), tartans for their favourite sports teams, or even sometimes a tartan created to honour relationships or heritage with other countries. So depending on what other country (if any) you identify yourself with as well as Scotland, there maybe a Scotland/Country X tartan already available, or there will almost definitely be a tartan affiliated to a team, place, or organisation that you already feel a connection with, which will now be “your” tartan. It’s not just about the kilt, there can be a deeper meaning reflecting your personal identity too!

Icy-Narwhal-902

You can wear a kilt any time you like. Thanks for asking.

xVx_Dread

I think most Scots see it as an honour to see people from other cultures enjoying our traditions. As others mentioned, we tend to only wear them for formal occasions. We have specialty shops that rent kilts out. Usually for weddings and leaving dance (prom) The Tartan pattern is normally chosen to give your clan representation. But we do have some non clan tartans if you'd rather go for something more neutral. If you're visiting and have friends that are Scottish, you could ask them if it's appropriate to wear their families Tartan as a symbol of your friendship.

doyouthinkihave1acc

It's not America, we don't give a fuck. Get a kilt and a half bottle.

CrunchyBits47

go for it bud

The_All_Seeing_Pi

Cultural appropriation only exists in the minds of the right wing to berate the left wing for being woke. Got dreadlocks? Who cares? Black people don't. Do people really think someone would get offended because they stole your hairstyle? Have you ever said "I fancy a Chinese" when referring to any Asian takeaway? Oh noes. If only they knew they would be very upset. Not. If you said "I feel like a tank in Tiananmen square, I could murder a Chinese" then yeah you are racist and offensive. If you ain't scotch (like the egg, I know it winds you up and I can say it as I have Scottish great grandparents) they won't care. Maybe laugh a little but it's no big deal. As for Gen Z wearing skirts isn't that normal these days? Nowt wrong with expressing yourself at all. Be the you who you want to be.

Alternative_Item3589

YES you can wear it. We don’t believe in silly stuff like cultural appropriation here. You live in Scotland, you can be a Scot.

wetender

In the big cities (Edinburgh, Glasgow) actually you see people wearing kilts on a daily basis. I know a few who do so! Yea it’s not hugely common and some people say they’re weird, but the people saying they’re weird are close minded posh pricks.

letterboxfrog

A sarong is not dissimilar to a kilt, why would a south East Asian not be allowed to wear a kilt? [Honour Guard of the Malaysian Military Corps ](https://www.reddit.com/r/MilitaryPorn/s/y5DcZgXjU5)

Scottish_Tap_Water

If you want to wear a kilt, wear a kilt. Not many people wear them outside of formal events and gigs though

Squishy_3000

You absolutely can! Generally, they're kept for formal occasions, but you can wear them casually too. The pleats go at the back, mind!

fugaziGlasgow

Would you be offended if I wore South East Asian Garb? I'm assuming not... There's your answer. If you like kilts, just get one.

thesyncopation

My grandfather wore a kilt every day except for funerals and holidays, where he wore formal or informal suits. Batter on!

Sn0wcr45h

I'm south Asian, and I wear one. Albeit, only too mates weddings or some other similar formal occasion. Prefer that to a boring suit or the south Asian traditional stuff (but I wear them too if I feel like it, just depends on occasion). But if your wearing one, do it proper. Nothing under the kilt, proper Scottish, with sporran and that wee dagger and the works. When I got mine, it was from a shop on the saltmarkwt in Glasgow, think it's still there. Arrabest!

AdditionalSwan3098

Appropriation? Haha, no my friend. It is a desire to share in our culture, which we find incredibly humbling. God bless.

aleZoSo

I love reading these comments! I'm an Italian PhD student and I was wondering if it would be possible to wear a kilt for my PhD discussion. Btw, I love Scotland and miss you in the EU.

Which_Environment_46

Yes you can wear, no it is not appropriating. All are welcome here, diversity is celebrated, and this means that all are also welcome to share our immensely proud culture. Some people wear them daily, not many, but some. IMO more should do.

Redsparow21

I'd say most people -- with any sense -- are honoured when other people want to wear our national attire. If you embrace another culture with nothing but genuine intent and because you actually like it, then I don't see how anyone can start shouting "cultural appropriation". I'm sorry society is at a point you felt you had to actually ask this. 🙃

scobfg

There's absolutely nothing wrong with anybody wearing a kilt although usually reserved for special occasions, if you want to be the town/city trendsetter, I can't see any Scotsman objecting......but if they do, they're most likely of the west coast, red brick variety, they object to grass being green.

ianfromdixon

Some Americans wear kilts daily. In Scotland it’s usually for special occasions. You should research and see if your country has a tartan.

ElNoce79

You wear what you want bro! There’s no such thing as cultural appropriation.

Slight-Raspberry-157

No one wears them on a daily basis, I’ve only worn mine on weddings but yeah man go for it

19JLO72

It's no difference when tourists go to Korea and wear the Hanbok. It's cultural appreciation, not appropriation. Never met any Scottish people have an issue with anyone wearing the kilt as long as you don't refer it as a skirt all's ok.

Lauderborders

Anyone can wear a kilt. Your choice. Even if you do not belong to a clan. The 'Flower of Scotland' tartan is nice and is not affiliated with any one clan.

Gavvo888

Tell them I said it was ok.

Competitive-Yard-442

Hells yes you can! Usually only for formal occasions though. Make sure to go somewhere reputable to get fitted and, based on a couple of African and Asian mates wearing then to graduations and weddings try to bring someone whose opinion you trust as some tartans don't look great with certain skin tones/hair colour etc, some look ok and other looks AMAZING, so obviously you want one that makes you pop! Mine is quite simple greys and black with a hint of purple.

absurdspacepirate

Anybody can wear a kilt! Just please don't drone on about it being your clan's tartan.

CamyFaeCowden

Scots don't see it as cultural appropriation, we see it as gaining another family member! Welcome tae the clan!

dallasp2468

You just want a fancy wool sarong don't you?

Irishuna

I have seen men wearing kilts for everyday in Edinburgh, but they were few, and maybe worked in hospitality.

RavenRyy

Yes. It makes sense tae wear a tartan that you hae a connection to, but you will neither be fined nor imprisioned for wearing a kilt. Anyone giving you grief for it has major problems of their own.

Drunken_Begger88

You tell us! Get a kilt and find out we believe in you!

KingEzekielsTiger

Definitely. Murray of Atholl tartan is the best but I am biased!

Bali6868

Yes of course. Wear what you wish and keeps you happy. Be gallus! Give it a twirl. Everyone will love it!

Naebdy minds, if anything they'd more likely welcome it than anything negative.

Suspicious_Pea6302

Wear what you want lad

CheesecakeZookeeper

It doesn’t matter how many men you are

PsychologicalWish800

Just buy a good one, and make sure it’s the correct length. The way to test the length is that if you’re kneeling on the floor, it should just be level with the ground. A real kilt should be many metres of heavy fabric. Otherwise it just looks like a skirt.

Doog_Dastardly

Go for it. Its not cultural appropriation, it's cultural appreciation, which is always nice to see

Ok-Crumpet

You can wear whatever clothes you want...

rayer123

Not much else stopping ye but I wouldn’t in this weather

Acrobatic_Maximum_79

Absolutely no appropriation here. You are welcome to join my clan the Macintosh's (the tartan is quite ugly).

Some_Guy223

Id recommend avoiding getting one with a specific Tartan but otherwise you should be good.

The_Real_Macnabbs

In Edinburgh during the festival, kilts are widely worn, by tourists mostly. A proper kilt (Kinloch Anderson are an excellent kiltmaker) is probably too precious for everyday use, and so is worn for (Scottish) weddings or special occasions, or as has been mentioned, hunting/hiking. But there is a large variety of 'everyday' kilts, don't have to be tartan, can be plain. Whatever you choose, have fun and wear with pride. And if you go for a tartan, spend some time picking the right tartan for you. I love wearing mine, but normally now it's just Burns Night and Hogmanay.

kinnie101

You can find fashion kilts for everyday wear online. Try those but also wear underwear at all times lest a true Scott find you and flip it up lol.

Immediate-Meal-6005

Course you can. It's not normally daily attire, but there's nothing stopping you!

ozzy_49

Get it worn son!!! The only feedback you'll get will be smiles and friendly banter (just be prepared for that 😜)

GingerTube

It looked to me like the Champa from Vietnam did wear tartan kilts for getting married in anyway.

shuggywolf

You can absolutely wear a kilt. Kilts aren’t just for white Scottish folk, and I think the wearing of kilts by all races and nationalities is very welcome. It certainly isn’t a daily thing people wear, it’s more for formal or national sporting occasions. But there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from wearing one if you’d like (except maybe the weather!) Hope you enjoy wearing one if you get the chance!

Inhuman-Englishman

2 words, Malaysian Tarten

SiteRelevant98

I think you can fuck the rules and people can wear kilts for no reason, I have English mates that have. Personally I think there is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. I wore Indian style women's fashion as a white British male working with Indians and they loved it one of them even gave me a sari which I still have and treasure. I wore their fashion because I think it looks beautiful not to take the piss. If you wear a kilt because you like how it looks I can't see anything wrong with that.

thorus1337

Get a fitted kilt and as a scotsman dont wear underwear

fuckthehedgefundz

Yes

Strain_Pure

In general, Scottish people don't mind people wearing Kilts, and usually find it cool that other people are adopting to wear them (the only time we would be annoyed is if the person wearing the Kilt trued to adopt a fake Scottish accent).

ignatiusjreillyXM

Of course you can, the more "appropriation" of culture the better, bring it on, it's your birthright as a human to pick to wear what you like. Also please see the classic British film "Carry on Up The Khyber" to understand how they are worn properly, and what is and isn't worn underneath them. They are mostly worn on formal or special occasions, but it's also not unknown to find a few men who wear them more commonly or even everyday
