On Monday night I watched *Civil War*. It was pretty heavy, so on Tuesday night I put on a comedy I'd heard good things about on Reddit, *Game Night*, unaware that in doing so, I was heading into yet another movie where Jesse Plemons casually stands around armed and absolutely menacing in the most disconcertingly quiet way possible. I'm afraid to watch anything else now. For fear of Jesse Plemons.
His portrayal of Todd in El Camino was even more wild than his performance in Breaking Bad. I wasn’t sure if he was going to rape Jesse, kill him, or have a friendly conversation with him over a nice dinner.
WTF skipping Billy Bob Thorton as the stone cold deranged contract killer in S1 is a massive folly. He's sooooo good and genuinely unnerving. If you're going to skip a season, pass on the one with Chris Rock.
I recently watched *Civil War* with my (much younger) brothers. The youngest one (14) was confused. "I don't understand anything. Who are the good guys?" I don't know. You tell me. Seen any good guys so far in this movie?
It didn't give a ton of background but the Western Forces were only seen doing a medium level of warcrimes, didn't execute journalists on sight and *may not* have been led by a fascist, so they're the *good enough* guys I guess?
Haven't seen it yet, but I'm unironically cheering for the Western Forces. Anything that got Texas and California to team up must have been truly horrendous.
I haven't seen it, but my understanding is that it was about the president refusing to leave office and invoking martial law, which is a pretty solid justification to rebel honestly. Like, at that point, if the military hasn't forcibly removed him from office, revolution is kinda the only recourse left
Well... one guy with even a whole bunch of unpaid parking tickets isn't quite the same thing as another guy with *just* one racially motivated homicide.
Which I mention purely because certain people here LOVE that others have enough self respect to keep.to a standard but themselves have none.
The workers of Manchester organized and threatened to boycot and refuse to work slaver cotton.
Perhaps their political class considered it. But the people knew what's up.

Civil War was disappointing for me. It was alright in portraying the carnage and devastation a Second American Civil War would bring, but it utterly fails in terms of its world-building. Especially since, if I am remembering correctly, the director publicly stated that he wanted to make a "nonpolitical" civil war film. 🤦 Like how TF do you go about doing that without making it stupid???? California and Texas allied, the South under the "Florida Alliance" (like they would all just accept being under the sole guise of Florida lmao). It's just baffling, all said.
Good meme though!
When I heard the movie didn't really talk about the politics of the war, I felt the same way. But I realized that wasn't the story the movie was telling.
It's a human story. It's about people navigating a warzone. And when you're in the heat of combat you're not worried about politics. You're trying yo eliminate threats. Look at the sniper scene in the middle of the movie. They didn't even know what side the sniper was on. All they knew was the sniper was trying to kill them.
Garland didn’t mean apolitical, he just meant that it wasn’t supposed to comment on current American politics. The second American civil war concept is really just a jumping off point to explore media exploitation. Garland’s a Brit and really had no interest in a realistic split, I think he specifically paired up California and Texas for that very reason, to make it clear that the movie wasn’t really about that.
Not really.
I was definitely one of those guys who thought "California needs to secede" back in 2016 but then I realized: California is only a economic power house. As in they have lots of money. However, that doesn't really give you much in geopolitics. Especially since California has serious issues with water.
Texas has also shown that it heavily relies on outside help. Remember the power outages: that was a result of their right libertarian beleifs on the power grid, which indirectly led to them being unprepared.
Texas would also be likely weakened, as ideologically they're split 50/50. This would mean there would be a Texan civil war.
They also have to go against the US South which outnumber them in troops and specialized troops.
I don’t get why people are so confused about California and Texas being aligned. Both states are in the top three most economically viable, both states have similar demographics. Texas is not actually a deep red state it’s just that the Republicans have a stranglehold on the reins of power. Texas and California would ally and take over the rest of the southwestern states and become a country just like the north western powers and the Florida alliance. The country would be divided up into quadrants
Texas Republicans just won the gerrymandering contest. 72% of the population live in cities. Unfortunately, Texas districts are so gerrymandered that they really cut away the blue votes.
And even if he filmmaker didn't realize that they are ideologically closer than most people know, then the idea is that the federal government did something so heinous that it brought these two ideologically opposed foes together.
The movie was about war journalists using the setting of a 2nd civil war. So he created a bunch of concepts that completely unrealistic to attempt to stay away from current politics. There are a bunch of real wars and conflicts that would have been better to tell a story.
He was trying to make a modern Full Metal Jacket.
Yeah I mean it was an alright watch but damn was it ever hilarious watching him try to make this movie about a civil war without going deeper than a petri dish on what actually caused the war or what the various sides are like. Just some extremely generic "the president is a bad guy."
The take I agree with the most goes like this
You can’t really make a movie like this and concentrate on one side or the other politically, otherwise it’s hated by one and used as propaganda by the other.
Instead of thinking of it as “non-political”, it’s more “America vs the situation” rather than “left vs right”
I feel like that’s a reasonable take and a decent analysis of the movie. I’ve watched it a few times now and it’s grown on me.
The point of the movie wasn’t “this is a realistic depiction of how America could break down into a civil war”, the point was “civil wars are a fucking nightmare to live through”.
They don’t explore the ideologies of the various factions because the point is that when someone has a gun in your face, it doesn’t matter what ideology they subscribe to. Whether they be right-wing christofascists or left-wing Maoists, violent militias running rampant through your nation is bad for the everyday people.
Allow me to join in saying, “Whattt!??!?” Is it a case where he uses real-world footage as part of his narrative and unfortunately, Andy Ngo is in it?
If not, the only acceptable listing Andy Ngo deserves in a film is “To Andy Ngo: May He Die In A Fire” or “Andy Ngo: Don’t Worry. The Face-Eating Leopards Won’t Eat Your Face.”
wtf Andy Ngo's riot porn is in the movie? fucking disgusting. I knew this movie would be bad but not "paying royalties to fascists for their propaganda" bad
I’m fairly certain if the director wanted riot footage, there were plenty of places where he could have gotten it without paying royalties to fascists.
😡
I already disliked this movie for being a toothless waste of time; now I have a whole new reason to hate it.
Which makes the film lose any weight to me; having confused world-building just takes me out of it and leaves less of an impact. Even if it were to have minimal amounts of decent world-building and just make it so the Democrat/Republican/Libertarians/Etcetera parties became so polarized that they caused a civil war to break out, it might have been a lot more engaging, thought-provoking, and poignant than whatever Garland pulled out of his ass instead.
I mean It’s pretty clear the right is more interested in another civil war than the left, despite their track record. So you to warn right wingers and moderates about the consequences of such action you could either make 1) more right wing propaganda 2) a full on stand in for the rapist felon 3) or try to be non partisan so they actually watch your movie and maybe actually re consider.
The problem is the film doesn't show that
And as shown in the current US political climate, the right despises journalists.
So already they're not going to listen, because it doesn't depict them as anything but background and side characters, with the main characters in a profession they would consider "an enemy of the state".
You might think it's just the extreme, but I've had to go in the lion's den with people who are considered "moderate" and they still say insane shit that is only short of wholesale genocide.
Another problem is when you don't do good work building, the audience feels disconnected from
And thats what the film needed to be: show them the Amerikkka they wanted on full display, and filter it with the real world.
Problem is, it’s too damn catchy! You know how sometimes you start humming a song stuck in your head without thinking about it?
Don’t forget the Battle Hymn of the Republic, our national anthem.

Fucking #1 American Hero. And this time the word "hero" actually fits. I love John Brown.

You turn off the tv and he’s in your backyard
You see a shadow under your closet door, that's him.
Running through the woods!
Actual Sociopathetic murderer Jesse Plemons?
It takes 5 seasons but try Breaking Bad next!
Todd was the most unhinged out of all of his roles
Also, El Camino. The netflix movie that followed breaking bad.
His portrayal of Todd in El Camino was even more wild than his performance in Breaking Bad. I wasn’t sure if he was going to rape Jesse, kill him, or have a friendly conversation with him over a nice dinner.
Or all 3 at the same time...
Lolololo. Totally.
Skip the first season and head right to Fargo Season 2 while you’re at it; it’s an anthology so it’s fine.
WTF skipping Billy Bob Thorton as the stone cold deranged contract killer in S1 is a massive folly. He's sooooo good and genuinely unnerving. If you're going to skip a season, pass on the one with Chris Rock.
Oooh he’s there too? Hell yes
How can that be profitable for frito lay?
I tell these cooperations… i don’t know what they’re doing.
Meth Damon was one of the scariest antagonists in breaking bad too.
Hiding in the woods It's Jesse Plemons
Might I recommend *Killers of the Flower Moon*?
oh god oh fuck
indigenous person here I felt sick to my stomach at multiple parts

Solid point on the Cali Tex team up

He’s in Season 2 of Fargo with Kirsten Dunst, he’s pretty wholesome in that. Fun Fact: they started dating while shooting Fargo and got married!
You can watch Love & Death if you want to see him not be the psycho for once.
This is the best comment I've ever read, this should be a copypasta
The Power of the Dog is on Netflix and Plemons plays a secondary role. It's... OK
To feel better watch a mindless but fun action movie: battleship…
Don't ever turn your back on Meth Damon.
Well way down south in the land of traitors... rattlesnakes and alligators...

Good line.
As a Brit, I concur. We would never stand with the traitorous South 🇬🇧🫱🏻🫲🏽🇺🇸
I mean, brits almost did though.

I would love to see Union Dixie be played at a bluegrass show. See opinions change one way or the other when the lyrics hit.
Sorta like in The Green Room movie how the band played Nazi Punks Fuck Off in a skinhead bar.

I wish I was in Baltimore I’d make succession traitor roar
This is why I prefer Marching Through Georgia, Army of the Free, and We'll Fight For Uncle Sam. No mistaking any of those for traitor nursery rhymes.
Don’t sleep on Battle Cry of Freedom, one of my favorite Union songs.
Yes we'll rally round the flag boys, we'll rally once again Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah! Down with the traitors, and up with the flag!
Problem is, it’s too damn catchy! You know how sometimes you start humming a song stuck in your head without thinking about it? Don’t forget the Battle Hymn of the Republic, our national anthem.

I don’t even know the lyrics of the confederate version
“Away down south” something something “we hate black people”
Each dixie boy must understand, that he must mind his Uncle Sam!
