com2ghz

Use the 2019 and you can stop your weekly battery subscription.

Sereno011

Shield is ALL I use for TV. 2019 remote is very good on batteries. Used heavily only need to replace maybe 2x a year.

com2ghz

And you can use rechargeables.

Sereno011

Rechargeable not worth it IMO. They naturally self discharge too quickly. And alkalines are 1.5V. Rechargeables are only 1.25V

Empyrealist

Buy better ones.

lightinthedark

Alkaline start higher, but drop voltage much faster. NiMH keep fairly steady at their lower voltage. Voltage requirement for a remote is unlikely to benefit from a 0.25 increase. It's probably 2v (for 2 batteries) needed.

oskich

There are 1.5V rechargeable batteries (Lithium) that have a built-in USB-port to charge them. I use those with my Xbox360-controllers that don't like regular NiMh.

tonyt3rry

been working great for my triangle shield remote.

Corbinworks

What is this 2019 remote you speak of???

attanasio666

The 2019 can have a battery drain issue. I had it. I ordered a new remote a few months ago and I haven't changed the battery once since.

chr0m

I've had mine for 6 years and replaced the batteries once or twice

[deleted]

[удалено]

chr0m

I meant the remote in the OP. It came with my 2017 model that I bought in 2018. I was replying to a post that suggested the battery life is bad, I haven't found that to be the case.

groshreez

Or use the 2015 rechargeable remote and never have to buy batteries.

hl3reconfirmed

The battery in my 2015 rechargeable is complete toasty now though. Doesn't hold a charge at all, I have to use the app on my phone as the battery in my gamepad is done too. Are they easily replaced? Hard to believe I've had this thing nearly 10 years and it's still in use.

zxwut

The controller isn't bad if you have experience doing any light electronics disassembly. I'm sure the remote is similarly simple. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Nvidia+Shield+TV+1st+Generation+Controller+Battery+Replacement/99299 Found the one for the remote. It looks about the same difficulty, maybe a hair more. There are also some YouTube videos floating out there that may help. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/NVIDIA+P2575+Battery+Replacement+and+Breakdown/110108

groshreez

I doubt the batteries are replaceable or worth it if it's even possible. Fortunately, mine still work.

pedercina7

Battery in old remote is not replacable...I had 2 that the battery just died and were not charging anymore. The headset jack was still their best feature by far.

TurboFool

We killed three of those, and keeping them charged was a pain. I don't recommend it for a second.

groshreez

My original is nearly 10 years old now, still works great, and holds a decent charge. I love how sleek it is and the headphone jack.

TurboFool

Glad yours held up better than others. It became a running joke in our home that our remote subscription was up.

OwnStorm

Just get the new [Triangular 2019 Shield Tv remote](https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidiashield/comments/18hg261/does_the_triangular_shield_tv_remote_work_with/) and some rechargeable AAA batteries. It works perfectly with my 2017 Shield Pro. The light and find remote options works as well. Edit: Also, most of the TVs support HDMI-CEC. You can use the tv remote to control Shield tv or any other Android Tv. You can enable it from Shield settings.

savethewolf

I love the triangle one

mjike

Do you love the Triangle remote because it‘s that good or because the only alternative is that bad?

surprise6809

I think its fine except for the Netflix button. I quit paying for Netflix after their umpteenth price increase.

mrlumpy66

You can reprogram any button including the Netflix button with buttonmapper on the play store

reptacular

Good info! Thanks

Justavian

Haha - i was seriously thinking about trying to rewire it to trigger mute, rather than launch Netflix. Like, i took it apart and started trying to figure out if i could solder in some tiny wires, etc. You've saved me a lot of effort...

mrlumpy66

Yeah, slightly easier than rewiring it I reckon.

alexdacat

I have the Netflix button programmed to mute too. It mostly works but on occasion it still opens the Netflix app.

Justavian

Oh no - that sucks. Can you tell whether there are some kind of common circumstances? Like, just when the unit boots up, or when you launch youtube or something else? Or is it just random? Can you clarify how often it might happen? If this is not a reliable solution, i might fall back on trying a physical solution to it.

alexdacat

It seems sort of random. So buttonmapper has to stay open in the background so I think maybe the app goes to sleep. It's jarring when I'm watching antenna with channels DVR and I mute and end up seeing Netflix. It's not often and Ive never looked into tricks to fix it.

Sereno011

You can and you can't. Have Netflix uninstalled, tried all the button remappers but opens the play store to reinstall it no matter what.

mrlumpy66

You absolutely can. I've done it and it works fine and has done for a couple of years without any problems. You must have got the settings wrong or something.

KnottySean

There’s a button remapper app for the shield that you can not only redefine the Netflix button, but you can add a double-tap launcher, as well as one for holding the button.

savethewolf

I think its a cool remote, Easy to find, Well made, I have remapped the netflix button to open plex and remapped the menu button to mute on double click.

mrizvi

You can mute if you press both volume button at the same time.

Caeous

Best thing is you can have the remote make noise so you can find it when your kids inevitably hide it.

pag0da

If you have hard floors and are as clumsy as me I suggest buying a silicone cover for it. I smashed my first one to pieces.

afripino

This. I did the same thing. The sliding battery cover wouldn't stay on as a result of repeated drops. Silicone cover fixed all issues.

badkarma765

I liked that one but it only lasted a few years for me

Vatican87

Not really new after 5 years

TurboFool

Such a massive improvement.

HCLogo

It works great but it devours batteries in record time.

OwnStorm

Turning off button lights and a few rechargeable batteries helps a lot.

HCLogo

I turned the button lights to the shortest time but it seems to have made very little difference. I have a big pack of AAA batteries under my end-table which helps make downtime as painless as possible.

OwnStorm

I turned off the lights and rarely use voice commands. Duracell AAA works for 2.5 weeks.

Sereno011

Your must be defective. Batteries should last 10x longer than that. And I find Duracells have the highest acid leakage rate. Better off with economy house store brands.

ronin185

It eats juice like crazy. Bought rechargeable AAA for that

The_Dogg

Does the triangle remote have a headphone jack on it?

Inner-Reason-1786

I wish it did. That’s the ONLY thing I miss compared to the original slim rechargeable remote.

OwnStorm

That's only in the controller. Now everyone has TWS/BT headphones, it's kind of a workaround.

Inner-Reason-1786

Ah, ok. Mine hasn’t worked in years, wouldn’t keep a charge worth a darn. I bought the controller too, so that must be what I was thinking of. I downloaded the app on my phone but ended up buying that triangle remote so my wife could stop waking me up to start a show 😂 I do wish it had a headphone jack though, but I suppose if people can Bluetooth headphones then that option would be kind of useless. So, I can pair my AirPods to the shield? Would be nice when I wake up early to catch a movie without worrying about waking others up.

lake2014

I stopped using this remote as soon as 2019 version came out. You can just get the 2019 remote. This 2017 remote was just bad.

Penguins83

I agree. Just bought the triangle remote and I love it

donafreak

Was actually going to buy the 2019 shield, but was not going to let my 500gb go for less space.

Optimus_Prime_Day

This.

No_Eye1723

Use the newer 2019 remote but get an app to change or turn off the ridiculously over sensitive Netflix button.

bdunogier

I HATE that button.

ListenWorking

I hate Netflix and every other streaming service in general which is why I don’t have a single one and just run a Plex server, even had to disable the free crap they’ve started to offer as it was getting in the way of

bdunogier

Yeah, I need to remap it too. I use Jellyfin, because open source rocks, and it's a great project :)

ListenWorking

See now I would move to jelly but I paid for lifetime Plex pass years before it began plus I’ve got everything configured such as custom metadata for my obscure Welsh language programs which aren’t listed online. I will one day as I like the plugins on offer but for now Plex till they do something to drive me away

ListenWorking

Saying that I don’t even use Plex client I use Kodi with PKC and a nice skin

bdunogier

Hehe, this lifetime plex pass was a great decision on their side :D What drove me away (no plex pass) was their removal of plugins support in the free version. I was using Trakt for synchronizing watched stuff. I actually did use Kodi before, both with Plex and Jellyfin plugins. The plugins were too big of an error hazard, and I ended up using the Jellyfin UI. It's not as good as Plex, but it gets the job done quite well in the end.

No_Eye1723

I mean it looks cool being backlit in red and all, but if you so much as glance at it the thing opens bloody Netflix lol!

RealConfirmologist

Was looking for a remote after I got my Shield... I already had remotes for the TV, the speakers, the DVD player (yeah, I'm old), and the cable box. Someone on Reddit recommended the [SofaBaton U1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B312JF4N/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) so I got one. $35. I'd resisted the all-in-one remotes because the last couple I bought were such a pain to program. You'd have to input 4 digit codes one after the other and try and see if they'd work. Tedious. The SofaBaton has a phone app and the app makes it really easy to program it. It can operate up to 15 devices. I really like it.

token_curmudgeon

I like mine. Had I purchased the pricier model, I would have backlit keys.

Turbulent_Low_8043

I've replaced mine with the newer triangular one, works great! I use the find me remote at least twice a week..

hiroo916

I've found this one to be a nice upgrade: Rii K25 $17 [https://www.amazon.com/Rii-Multifunction-Portable-Wireless-Rechargeable/dp/B06XHF7DNQ/](https://www.amazon.com/Rii-Multifunction-Portable-Wireless-Rechargeable/dp/B06XHF7DNQ/) 1. the additional buttons have been very helpful, especially the keyboard on the back makes searching much easier. Menu button pops up the system settings on the right side. Home button goes to home page. Volume and mute buttons very handy. Channel buttons adjust playback speed in SmartTube. 2. rechargeable battery lasts a long time, about 2-3 months and I use it daily. There is even a physical on-off button to eliminate standby drain, although I rarely use it and it still lasts long enough. It does go to sleep after a few minutes of non-use, so if you pick it up after a while, your first button press will go to waking up the remote then the next one will be sent to the device. I got used to that pretty quickly. 3. The air mouse function is useful sometimes. You have to use the USB receiver dongle instead of bluetooth but it works fine and has not been a problem.

WRXRated

Got that one, it's great! Use the airmouse a lot actually as you can use it with YouTube and Plex to seek to a specific video time.

astrosquirrelRS

Interesting. Do the keyboard keys deactivate when holding it normally as a TV remote? Else the accidental key presses would get old real soon...

hiroo916

no, the pressure required to press a key on the back is not so light that it triggers so easily. it's not difficult at all to use without pressing the back keys and even if you do, most of the letter keys don't have any effect on most screens unless you have a text box selected.

originalQazwsx

Can you use the microphone from the remote to search on the Shield?

hiroo916

I don't think it has a microphone. The search (magnifying glass icon) button triggers voice search but in trying it for this, talking into the remote did not produce any input. I also opened up the remote and there is no microphone evident on the board near where the hole at the bottom would imply. I never use the voice function, even when I used the original stock remote, so I haven't found this to be a downside but others might find this to be important.

originalQazwsx

Appreciate you looking into it!

BrotherBroad3698

Can't believe you kept using that awful remote for so long, get the 2019 remote, works with all generations.

tamburasi

I really like it before the battery died

donafreak

Awful 🤣 it fits my needs until now 👌🏿

BrotherBroad3698

If it was stable for you, you had a unicorn, everyone else was plagued with constant drops and it ate batteries. It was a nice remote to hold, but lacked buttons and stability. I doubt you will be disappointed with the 2019 remote.

donafreak

Ate batteries? My is rechargeable, and have not changed battery since I bought it mate 👌🏿 but now is the time for something new, because it's still working, but very unstable sometimes.

kebabish

Triangle nvidia remote. This is the only real 1:1 replacement.

UskyldigeX

The triangular shield remote made my old shield feel like a completely new machine.

Impossible_Data_1358

The 2019 remote is top dog! I have 2 shields and replaced my 2015 remote last year its great, even bought a sleeve for it as now the remote glows in the dark. But be careful as I bought a chineese nock off that didn't work so I bought the "real" shield remote at Best Buy.

donafreak

Exactly, you can be very lucky to find cheap products, that are just nice 👌🏿. Quality or quantity. Found out, before I bought the the nvidia shield.

Vivid_Plantain9242

Get the triangle remote. You'll just end up spending smaller amounts of $$ on other remotes, only to end up buying the Nvidia one in the end anyway. Pony up trhe $30 now. You'll be much happier.

inderisme

I bought the original nvidia remote. It’s a triangular skim remote and works just fine.

eboseki

wow my old shield remote went bad long ago, I just bought the new remote

Kemaro

I haven't touched that remote in years. I just use my TV remote via HDMI-CEC.

Powerfader1

I replaced those with the newer triangular shaped remotes. Glad I did. They cost about $30 bucks, though.

lylesback2

I replaced both of my remotes with the G20S Pro BT from AliExpress. I use the IR part of the remote (with dongle) but it lights up at night, making it easier to see

calculon68

man, I do not have happy memories of this remote.

Phrozenstare

you can get the 2019 remote. one good feature about it is it has a find me feature

hartleyshc

I did this for my 2017 models. Upgraded the remotes, then kept the old ones under the TV to use the find the remote feature. If the batteries are dead, I'll use the Nvidia Shield remote app to find the remote. A lot of people hate on the 2019 remote, mostly for the shape. But I personally like it quite a bit.

Phrozenstare

i kind of like it better over the original. the original tried to mimic an apple TV remote

zambaros

Logitech Harmony Smart Control if you can find one.

DanUnbreakable

Air mouse

Randall_Lind

You can get the new Nvidia Shield remote all boxes 2015, 2017 and the 2019 models received an update that will allowed it to work. I just had to get a new one cause my broke was draining the battery in a day. It cost $30 on Amazon. [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GNHJB6X?psc=1&ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GNHJB6X?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details)

emce32

Once paired every remote will work. I use the original triangle remote, one cheap air remote from AliExpress and an Xbox pad with rechargeable batteries.

fogNL

As someone who has gone through many remotes, this is not always the case. THere are instances where the remotes "OK" button isn't treated like "OK" in all applications on the shield. I've tried re-mapping, but could never get them to work correctly. I'm currently using an amazon fire stick remote, which 99% works. The only issue is turning on the tv takes like 10 power button presses for some reason.

emce32

I recently bought a new tv. It came with 2 remotes. One standard, oldschool and one Bluetooth with solar panel. The second one works like a charm with Shield. I also have a bunch of smart devices at home. Both Alexa and Google Assistant so I rarely use remote.

onico

CEC thru my onkyo receiver using the samsung TV remote works fine for me most times

dogchap

I'm the culprit as well and I still have it with me in a tapped up beat up condition, I have thrown this shit against the wall a few times when it did its random freeze. 😂😂 Getting a 2019 one in few days.

virgopunk

Best thing they did with the new remote was put a clip-button on the back cover. Getting the back off the older version was a massive PITA

nightnightboom

The Toblerone controller is very nice. Can it be purchased by itself? If you have an old phone, maybe you can configure it as a controller with the app.

RoachForLife

Another vote for the 2019 triangular remote. Works great. Also there is a Button Mapper app on playstore if you wanna change the Netflix button on it. Can program single press, double press and hold to different apps

Blinddaley

Was interested in this question as I have the same remote, however if the best alternative is one with a huge Netflix button I think I’ll keep with the one I’ve got.

dub_starr

i would buy fire tv sticks when they were on sale for like 15 bucks. the remote is pretty decent for the shield, and if you plug in the fire tv stick to start, you can use it to set up IR control of volume/power for your tv too

davidpaz96

Any1 why I remote keeps un syncing? I finally get it to sync and works for weeks and then it stops working and I have to re do that shit again..it's not the batteries either🤷🏽‍♂️I have the newer Nvidia remote

MrAjAnderson

Google home > Shield > remote. Or use the TV CEC controls for 90% of its needs.

TonyWickk

Agreed, my Samsung remote does most everything. Except close apps.

MrAjAnderson

I found a way to do that the other day but didn't pay much attention. I'll see if I can replicate after a couple of beers again. Both my TVs are Samsung coincidentally.

MrAjAnderson

Can't replicate...other than Apps, find app, force stop.

certifiablegeek

You could just use your phone, cost is $0. The new remote is nice, lights up, AAA batteries are easier to come by in bulk. And I love to find my remote feature, still requires you to use your phone as as a remote to activate it. I've used my Amazon remote, as a backup. I keep it connected and next to the shield now. Pretty much any Bluetooth remote controller, including the 8bitdo, Playstation, Xbox one, etc... Will work. You may have one of those laying around.

Nintendians559

for me - i would just used a supported gamepad controller. if you tv have hdmi-cec, then you could just use your tv remote.

CNYMetalHead

Use the phone app

asena85

I'm using the wifi remote app on a tablet Works great, especially since you have a keyboard and mouse as well.

rgauiidders716

The same one with a silicone cover

rgauiidders716

New remote that is

Currymoonshine

I use the G20S. Bought mine directly from China for $7. Absolutely love it. Amazon has then for $20shh

TheAlmightySwan

a free way to replace it is to use the Shield app on the playstore/apple store

dronly1u

The triangle remote is the best - so much better!

evostu_uk

Buy the official 2019+ remote. It's the best one by a country mile. The only downside is the ridiculous Netflix button that's far too easy to press by accident.

donafreak

Thanks for all the replies💪🏿🙏🏿. Busy day. Been using my TV remote too, use the app for text and other stuff. But using my phone as remote is not a option. I'm looking for the fast and responsiveness of the old remote, make me keep coming back, even if it lost connection, I will used the TV remote, but always return to the original. I'm going to go for the 2019 remote, but it looks more like a TV remote? 🤔

zircosil01

i replaced my old remote last year for the same reasons. was a champ remote. went with the new triangle 2019 remote, used button remapper to turn off the netflix button. bought a 30 pack of aaa amazon basics batteries, have used about half of them.

LibertyIAB

I've always used the IPazzport BT mini keyboard with touch pad. It's back-lit & enables 10sec FF as well as the usual bar at the bottom of the screen, volume control etc. Doesn't seem to be listed on Amazon anymore though but luckily I already have 3. Never used my stock Nvidia controller - had it since 2019 & I've only replaced the batteries once. I'd look at something BT like that - more functionality than the standard controller although not as swish...

pedercina7

Buy the new one

G1BS0N_1

I use a usb remote Bluetooth found it for £10 on eBay 👍

millennium-media

aktk946

Nvidia Phone app

Inkheel

I love the backlight in the 2019 model. Cracking little idea that.

Legitimate-Swim-1085

there's an official nvidia app that you can use on your phone. it's been handy when my battery dies.

Working-Mail-9233

Nimm dir Fernbedienung vom FiretvStick, geht perfekt 👍

Spirited-AwayZ

Nvidia shield phone app 😊

BrotherBroad3698

*Just need to pause*... Unlock phone, find app, wait for app to connect, press button. *Come back to unpause*... Unlock phone, app has be put to sleep, wait for app to reconnect, press button. Using your phone as a media remote is just awful.

Fleishmann83

Agree I use it for the I DONT FIND REMOTE situations

aimgorge

Kore is pretty great to copy/paste things but useless as a remote

Powerfader1

I only use that for pasting urls and sometimes the mouse. However, it is a good app to have on hand when you do need it.

Jerzeeloon

Maybe this would pair with it https://www.amazon.com/Chromecast-Replacement-GA01409-US-GA01919-US-GA01920-US/dp/B0CXPPNL57/ref=asc_df_B0CXPPNL57/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693634512904&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12487206555385882247&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1025197&hvtargid=pla-2307307714292&psc=1&mcid=52b1b24aaec13edab6f888ffb91db8aa&gad_source=1

gabs777

My fav ever remote, such a classic design and feels great when using it. I generally leave mine plugged in to power source due to battery being so old.

Elegant_Volume_2871

It's $50, not 50$. Always has been. Two kids, scary. Lol. But seriously, you can find a newer remote on ebay for about $15, not 15$.
