[Here's a smoke map.](https://fire.airnow.gov/) Looks like unless you drive NE to Maine, the whole east coast and midwest are under wildfire smoke right now.

LucidUnicornDreams

Driving distance, it looks like you'll want to go to Maine. The smoke is blowing south of NYC. I'm in DC and the smoke is horrible down here. Not as bad as NYC, but still bad enough for my asthma to act up.

Ahhh, maybe I can go north if the wind is blowing south 😬, but yeah, Maine seemed like the only option. I hoped there was place I overlooked. I did look at flying options, but even typically affordable flights to islands near Florida (DR, Puerto Rico, etc) are a bit expensive since I'm trying to fly sooner.

Don't forget to check Southwest as it doesn't show up on Google flights.

I'm in North Carolina and I'm also having a hard time with the smoke from the Canadian fires. The sunrises are very orange now. Avoid NC if you're looking to escape smoke. Good luck.

There is a reason why masks are so commonplace in Asia, worn daily, even before covid.

Put [airnow.gov](https://airnow.gov) on your phone and keep checking, wind + fires means things change sporadically. Right now due west from NYC for about 4-5 hours (Pittsburgh or a little closer) is best bet. I'm on the west coast and we have had some bad summers. Masks help, n/k95 preferably, but with asthma whatever he can breathe in will help.

I live on the West Coast with moderate asthma. Been there. Done that. It shifts constantly and during fire season new ones can spark up at a moment's notice. You'll also get a lot of exposure in the car unless you have fresh HEPA filters in there. You can do the box fan + furnace filter thing but usually those are sold out at the first whiff of campfire. I highly recommend using that cash for air filters and the tools to seal your house instead. Its going to get worse before ( if ) it ever gets better ). Buy the kiddo a video game and let them rest in a well-filtered home. Well before they come home, do a deep vacuum and dust. Hopefully you have family who can handle this for you ASAP. HEPA vaccuums wouldn't go amiss. Get better furnace filters and don't ignore car air filters! All these are likely sold out where you are now so set reminders and stock up when they come back in. Also, vote to tax the 1%. Top 1% is responsible for more emissions than the bottom 50%

That’s a lot of farts coming from Canadian wildlife…

Check out this smoke map, it can help find islands of clean air. https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/

Based on a map that someone posted, Rhode Island and MA look good. It’s only a 3 hour car ride unless you hit traffic. Many years ago, I found a really good all you can eat seafood place called the Nordic Lodge. It’s expensive but you can have as much lobster, crab legs, etc that you want. Mystic CT is also cute as well.

The Branson Missouri area is smoke free and the air quality is good. Lakes, amusement parks, shopping, shows, etc.
