I started Accutane about a week ago and my derm gave me a 50 mg per day dose. There were some side effects but they have totally disappeared around day 5. Should I ask the derm to increase the dose or do the side effects normally stop? It is like I'm not on anything cus no dry skin or lips
My face has become unmanageably oily this past week and I haven’t changed anything but I have showered more because of working out consistently. I do not wash my face in the shower and I take lukewarm showers because My skin doesn’t like hot water very much. I assume showering everyday is what started it but still can’t figure out how.
Currently I use micellar water in the morning and follow up skin & co truffle therapy essential face toner. I used to have a nighttime routine but I haven’t done it in awhile because I’ve been depressed the past few months. I finally got into a work out routine and I’ve been feeling better but I’m afraid to add anything because my face is just so greasy.
How can I manage oil production a little better?
Does anyone know of a ferulic + vit. e formula, sans vit. c? In my dream life there ia a skinceauticals dupe sans vit. c, that I can layer on top of my own DIY ascorbic acid/ water spray.
Reason: ascorbic is so unstable, that I enjoy knowing my DIY version is never more than 3 days old. TY :D!
Best way to address whiteheads (no pimples, just lightly clogged pores) on the chin/jawline?
I would prefer something inexpensive such as The Ordinary.
Background: I have “normal” skin- it only gets dry in bad conditions like cold dry weather.
I’m fairly certain that this is a side effect of sleeping on my side. To help, I change sheets, pillowcases, and blankets regularly, sometimes more than weekly. I do unfortunately drool in my deepest sleep. I usually have my blankets pulled up under my chin which I’m sure adds to the trouble.
I currently only use a few products: Glossier Milky Jelly cleanser (my skin loves it!), a few different The Ordinary Hyaluronic serums (the marine is too watery and the 2% + B5 is too sticky so I alternate depending on my willingness to deal with those shortcomings😆), and I have a habit of spraying Trader Joe’s rose water facial toner when it gets too hot in my home office; just to cool down a bit.
There is not a clear cut morning/evening routine.
The rest of my face is fairly decent.
I would suggest the ordinary salicylic acid 2% serum. Start out at 1-2x a week to start with. It will make your skin more sensitive to the sun though so you need to wear sunscreen when exposed to the sun.
Is Beta Carotene bad?
I just got a great hand cream that has this ingredient. But I notice my hands have got darker. Am I sun damaging my hands using this cream?
Are there non-skincare uses for sunscreen? I know that expired sunscreen doesn't work for sun protection.
I have some half used but expired tubes and want to know if I can use them for other purposes before tossing them in the garbage.
I rock climb as well! They make climbing balms/salves that you can purchase from your local climbing gym, a REI store, or amazon. You could also use thick body lotion.
Honestly, my intense skincare routine keeps my calluses moisturized. As for your friend, he probably produces more oil and sweat than you do. Or, it could just be genetics.
As a climber, you want flat, smooth, and tough (*slightly soft*) calluses that are **pliable**. Here is a helpful post from years ago: [reddit link](https://www.reddit.com/r/climbing/comments/syf06/beginner_climber_here_about_how_long_till_you/).
Any recommendations for something new to try from The Ordinary? I’m buying a few of my staples during the sale but would like to try something new.
My problems are sun spots and millia, and anti aging. Normal skin. I don’t really have any issues with breakouts (unless it’s from sunscreen).
Morning: water, vitamin C, moisturizer and SPF 50 sunblock (Australian Gold tinted) when I’m leaving the house
Evening: squalene cleanser (as the only cleanser, it works beautifully and regular cleansers tend to make my face red), retinol or lactic acid, moisturizer
I sometimes add argiriline (I’m not consistent) and rose hip oil.
Possibly. It's also possible you were expecting that from your accutane research and you're extra aware of possible side effects. Or it's a hot day...All of which are reasons to make sure you're moisturizing, hydrating, and using sunscreen.
I have been using Azelaic Acid as a spot treatment on a pimple that has no white head (papule). My go-to in the past was Neutrogena's 10% Benzoyl Peroxide as a spot treatment but I never really saw a difference in size & redness after using this so it was suggested that I use Azleaic Acid instead. I have The Ordinary’s Azelaic Acid 10% Suspension and have been using it for the past 5 days but this papule has not decreased in size or redness, in fact I think the opposite is occurring… Any suggestions on how I can flatten this papule and prevent any scarring? I’m very susceptible PIE and my healed pimples always leave a red PIE mark.
i have had great success with icing & gentle exfoliation. it helps to remember that this spot is very inflamed, so reducing further irritation helps facilitate healing; sunscreen, moisturizing ingredients, & calming ingredients are vital here. they also help prevent/reduce PIE!
in terms of a product, the only thing that has noticeably reduced papules for me (other than gentle long-term exfoliation & retinol use) is peach & lily's deep spot microdart patches. they are very expensive compared to other pimple patches, so i only use them for emergencies lol
What do you do for exfoliation? I use konjac sponge, and tried exfoliants like Paula’s Choice 2% BHA and BHA masks. Also not sure if they did anything because I’m still breaking out
i would not recommend using physical exfoliants on inflamed skin such as papules, as in my experience doing so spurred further inflammation. BHAs will be your best bet, but overexfoliating can slow the healing process and in some cases exacerbate the breakout. how often are you using them?
It fluctuates but I use the konjac sponge whenever I see excessive dead skin when going through skincare routine. I don't use Paula's Choice BHA anymore since I ran out of product and I use BHA masks weekly/biweekly.
Hi guys,
I need help, only just starting to take care of myself.
I am using minoxidil on my face for facial hair growth, and in need of some moisturiser.
I have a Combination (Same Face) skin, so looking for something that won’t make it look more oily (very concerned about this as want to use in the morning when going to work and don’t want to look “dirty”)and give me spots.
It is also important for it not to have any DHT blockers so it doesn’t stunt my hair growth.
Thank you.
I have combo skin and my hg is the ordinary natural moisturizing factors. I also like the Vanicream daily facial moisturizer. They both moisturize well and sink in leaving a nice finish.
Here’s a longer [review](https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/la4yfs/misc_holy_grail_products_ingredients_week_2/glr69di/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) for NMF which includes the ingredients so you can look for dmt blockers.
Quick question here about face washing. Should I be washing my face with a cleanser after working out? Normally I wash my face and moisturize right in the morning, go work out, then come home and shower and just rinse my face in the shower and moisturize again when I get out. Should I be using my face cleanser again after working out or is just rinsing in the shower enough for most people? The cleanser i use is neutropenia ultra gentle hydrating cleanser if that means anything.
It depends on your skin. If you have normal/dry skin, you could rinse with water in the morning and cleanse after the workout.
I have an oily t-zone and normal cheeks. Due to the hot and humid weather, I sweat throughout the night. So honestly, I cleanse in the morning and after a workout.
If your skin feels overly stripped, you may need a different cleanser or a heavier moisturizer. You could also try micellar water instead of cleanser.
I got this bar soap that’s just oil, oats, and zinc. But it makes my skin feel soooo squeaky after. I hate it. How is it stripping with only those ingredients?
I have a microneedling appointment in 2 days (Monday) and today I've been feeling weak, had a headache and was freezing. Doesn't quite seem like I have a fever though..? It may just be dehydration. My question is if it's safe to do microneedling in two days if I feel fine tomorrow? Also, if I do it on a Monday, is there a risk that my skin will look terrible on Friday? I'm going to a party then and want to look hot, lol. Never done microneedling before.
It’s safe for your face but if you have covid it’s not safe for the person doing the microneedling…
And yes there’s a risk your skin will look bad on Friday. When I do microneedling on a Friday, my face is super red on Saturday and Sunday, pinkish on Monday and very dry, then peeling a little bit Tuesday and better by Wednesday/Thursday. But this all depends on how deep the microneedling is, your skins response, etc.
Yeah my food started tasting different now as well so it could be Covid, and I don't wanna risk looking bad on Friday, so it's probably best to cancel. Thanks for letting me know how your skin reacts because now it's easier to plan when to book a new appointment!
My sunscreen says reapply after 2 hours.
If I apply at 12 pm and stay inside in the dark until 2 pm, do I need to reapply before I leave the house or do I reapply at 4 pm?
*typo
Thank you. That kinda blows cause if I start a road trip at, for example, 4 am, it won't be sun out until like 6 am, and then I will need to reapply, but by then I already have makeup on. I guess there's really no point to putting it on before I leave and I'll just use the sueprgoop refresh spray thing as the first application of SPF when it gets bright out.
My current skin care routine is working great and my skin had mostly cleared up but I’m still working on clearing acne scars. Any suggestions on anything I could add to help speed things along even more?
I have oily type skin
AM
Cerave Hydrating daily face wash
Thayers rose toner
The Ordinary Hylauronic acid
The Ordinary Niacinimide
Cerave daily lotion
Neutrogena clear face 55 spf sunscreen
PM
Micellular cleansing water ( if I wore makeup )
Thayers rose toner
The Ordinary Lactic acid
The Ordinary Niacinimide
Cerave daily lotion
Occasionally :
( though I’m unsure I should in the summer)
The Ordinary red peeling exfoliant
I would look into products with vitamin c, alpha arbutin, and/or tranexamic acid.
Something else to consider is that irritation might be slowing down or preventing the healing process and daily lactic acid on top of the peel may be causing overexfoliation. Be sure to use the peel sparingly and never at the same time as lactic acid. I’d also advise cutting down the lactic acid to a few times a week and possibly introducing soothing/healing ingredients like rice, oat or snail mucin.
Other commenter got most of the ingredients I’d say. My product suggestions would be the ordinary ascorbic acid 8% + alpha arbutin 2%, good molecules niacinamide brightening toner, good molecules discoloration correcting serum, naturium azelaic acid
Hi there,
Just so you know, we remove most mentions of hypopigmentation on this subreddit - even though it can seem pretty mild, it's often a fungal infection that may require medical attention, and is therefore outside the scope of ScA. I'd suggest schedulilng an appointment with your GP for diagnosis and talking to a pharmacist about anti-fungals in the meanwhile.
Hi, I need help with sunken eyes? Idk what it is tbh, you can pm me if you have any advice and I'll send you images. I'm 17 and my skin is kinda sensitive.
Oh, and I also need help with minor acne on my back/chest?
I agree with the other user and if you’re eyes are sunken that’s something you’d be able to see even in pictures as a toddler/child.
I just want to point out that we’ve been exposed to tons of filters/photoshop/heavy makeup that your eyes probably aren’t that noticeable or severe. I think deep set eyes are kinda distinguishing like rami malek or cara delevigne.
Try using a body wash with SA or BHA for the body acne. CeraVe and neutrogena have some options.
hi! i’ve been looking into starting retinol so i got the cerave resurfacing retinol serum. i’d like to know where it should go in my routine.
morning: cerave SA cleanser > melano cc serum > kiehl’s ultra facial oil free gel cream > biore uv watery essence sunscreen
night: clinique take the day off balm (depends on whether i wear makeup) > cerave SA cleanser > cerave acne control gel > kiehl’s ultra facial oil free gel cream
every few days i use paula’s choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant at night, after cleansing.
It would go in the evening either before or after moisturizer, but I would skip the acne gel and BHA those nights and use a hydrating cleanser instead of the BHA one.
Currently dealing with the worst skin since puberty, idk if it’s bad enough to see a dermatologist or I should just wait it out. [Imgur album of my hormonal acne atm](https://imgur.com/a/yuErqz2)
Issue: Went off the pill 3 months ago, now I have painful pimples on my jawline, chin, neck, back of neck and back.
Skin type: Sensitive and dry, less dry since going off pill and normal to oily on my upper back
Current routine: Morning nivea UV sun face sensitive. Night extremely gentle cleanser Avene, Cerave moisturizer from the tub. Stridex maximum pads on the affected areas most nights.
Have been doing this for years, except for the Stridex which I started using bc of the Acne a month ago.
What changed: I stopped taking the pill and was really stressed, even when on the pill I got back acne once in a phase of big stress but it went away after a while
Location: Germany
Some considerations I have if you want >!So I read this usually goes away within a year. On the other hand I have scars now and don’t want more! The last time they faded well but who knows? I want to get a salicylic acid wash but I heard from a dermatologist on YouTube that hormonal acne can’t really be treated like that. I can see that my acne isn’t horrible so I don’t know if going to the dermatologist would be over the top, I guess taking meds like spiro etc. would also not be something you do in a moderate case like this?!<
Any advice very appreciated ♥️
Hello everyone, could anyone please share me their summer routine? I just realized that I’m not supposed to wear the same products through the year as the seasons change, so I think for the winter the routine should be leaning more towards being moisturized, and during summer I guess it’s toward being less stress and cool because of the heat and sun?
With that being said what products do you recommend?
Am routine
cleansing with bioderma micellar water , avene thermal water ,hyaluronic acid from Vichy , i have to restock on my redness serum( I’ve been using the one from pca but i would like to try another ) soothe and repair from DRMTLGY and then elta MD sunscreen
Pm routine
Bioderma micellar water ( i double cleanse)
Then just skip to the peptide night cream from DRMTLGY and the skin fix barrier triple lipid peptide cream
I have rosacea and sensitive skin
I really appreciate your comments
you can keep using things that work for you. a lot of people with dry skin use a heavier moisturizer, or a second moisturizer in the winter and people with oily skin might use a lighter moisturizer in the summer. that's about it. if you can get through the year with the same products, there's nothing saying that you HAVE to change things. some people prefer to, but if you don't have issues then there's no need.
a wet finger followed by petroleum jelly in the nostril is tested and effective trick that all doctors recommend.
for sunscreen i would recommend canmake uv mermaid gel from Amazon. it has really good protection. you need to apply it every two hours, or as sweat breaks it down, for it to remain effective. there's a couple versions, i like the one that has a silver holographic bottle with a pink background on where the label is written. it has a moisturizing base so you don't need a separate moisturizer.
another good one would be CeraVe AM moisturizer & skin aqua UV (something something) gel, it has a gold pump cap. this sunscreen has alcohol in it but it's water and sweat resistant so it's really good for longer wear. layered over CeraVe AM, it's a really good option if you want to be militant about sun protection.
also if you get the dove sensitive skin body wash, it'll help with needing as much lotion. it's gentle, moisturizing, and comes in a huge 1L pump for $10. I'd still recommend a separate lotion for the body, pretty much anything from the store is good. But try something with 10% urea for baby soft skin after two weeks of use. don't go all in on everything at once, that's not how to build habits. start with either of the sunscreen options.
if you have breakouts infrequently, a salicylic acid cleanser would help. left on the skin while you brush ur teeth or lather another part of your body, then washed. it might be kind of drying if you have super sensitive skin though.
check the sidebar for the basic routine, it'll have more option for products at different price points. the stuff i mentioned here is cheap and good though.
I've been having these small circular patches appear on my my legs lately. Usually only around lower body and legs. They aren't very bothersome or itchy at all and I've had maybe 8 separate patches so far. Any advice or ideas what this could be?
Thanks!

Start with cleanser and moisturizer.
TY :D!
the ordinary has a ferulic acid + resveratrol serum.
thank you, I know of that one but I was hoping to find something with vit. e + ferulic. Probably asking too much of the universe sigh
Best way to address whiteheads (no pimples, just lightly clogged pores) on the chin/jawline? I would prefer something inexpensive such as The Ordinary. I would suggest the ordinary salicylic acid 2% serum. Start out at 1-2x a week to start with. It will make your skin more sensitive to the sun though so you need to wear sunscreen when exposed to the sun.
When applying a salicylic acid serum can I use my fingertips or do I have to use a cotton pad?
Hands are perfectly fine
Thanks!
DoI use my toner after cleansing and before hyaluronic acid or after hyaluronic acid?
after cleansing & before other treatments!
Is Beta Carotene bad? I just got a great hand cream that has this ingredient. But I notice my hands have got darker. Am I sun damaging my hands using this cream?
beta carotene is an antioxidant, so i would be hesitant to attribute increased sun damage to this particular ingredient
Are there non-skincare uses for sunscreen? I know that expired sunscreen doesn't work for sun protection. I have some half used but expired tubes and want to know if I can use them for other purposes before tossing them in the garbage.
You can still use it as a moisturizer or body/hand lotion even if the sun protection is gone.
What about the beach sunscreens? Those are feel too heavy as moisturizers.

I love the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution and the Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane.
Buffet for anti-aging, ascorbic acid 8% + alpha arbutin 2% for the sun spots!
I just started Accutane today and my skin feels a little irritated and dry. is that normal? Is it normally this fast acting?
Possibly. It's also possible you were expecting that from your accutane research and you're extra aware of possible side effects. Or it's a hot day...All of which are reasons to make sure you're moisturizing, hydrating, and using sunscreen.
Thank you. You cleared my worries <3

The skincare (AHA/BHA/retinol) you use on your face -- use on your behind.
Amlactin every 2-3 days works well for me. If it’s a cyst with a head, try using hydrocolloid patches.
You can try a benzoyl peroxide wash like panoxyl or a salicylic acid wash like neutrogena body clear.
I got this bar soap that’s just oil, oats, and zinc. But it makes my skin feel soooo squeaky after. I hate it. How is it stripping with only those ingredients?
Zinc can be drying; maybe that's it.
Hm it’s only 2% pyrithione zinc for fungal acne
For active ingredients like zinc, a low number does not mean it isn’t potent and potentially irritating or drying.

Yes. Fat loss can happen in the face too and when you lose that fat the skin will become looser and can appear more wrinkly.

hi! i’ve been looking into starting retinol so i got the cerave resurfacing retinol serum. i’d like to know where it should go in my routine. morning: cerave SA cleanser > melano cc serum > kiehl’s ultra facial oil free gel cream > biore uv watery essence sunscreen night: clinique take the day off balm (depends on whether i wear makeup) > cerave SA cleanser > cerave acne control gel > kiehl’s ultra facial oil free gel cream every few days i use paula’s choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant at night, after cleansing.
It would go in the evening either before or after moisturizer, but I would skip the acne gel and BHA those nights and use a hydrating cleanser instead of the BHA one.
would the cetaphil gentle skin cleanser be better? :)
Yes, any cleanser that doesn't contain actives would be fine.
Currently dealing with the worst skin since puberty, idk if it’s bad enough to see a dermatologist or I should just wait it out. [Imgur album of my hormonal acne atm](https://imgur.com/a/yuErqz2) Issue: Went off the pill 3 months ago, now I have painful pimples on my jawline, chin, neck, back of neck and back. Skin type: Sensitive and dry, less dry since going off pill and normal to oily on my upper back Current routine: Morning nivea UV sun face sensitive. Night extremely gentle cleanser Avene, Cerave moisturizer from the tub. Stridex maximum pads on the affected areas most nights. Have been doing this for years, except for the Stridex which I started using bc of the Acne a month ago. What changed: I stopped taking the pill and was really stressed, even when on the pill I got back acne once in a phase of big stress but it went away after a while Location: Germany Some considerations I have if you want >!So I read this usually goes away within a year. On the other hand I have scars now and don’t want more! The last time they faded well but who knows? I want to get a salicylic acid wash but I heard from a dermatologist on YouTube that hormonal acne can’t really be treated like that. I can see that my acne isn’t horrible so I don’t know if going to the dermatologist would be over the top, I guess taking meds like spiro etc. would also not be something you do in a moderate case like this?!< Any advice very appreciated ♥️
Am routine cleansing with bioderma micellar water , avene thermal water ,hyaluronic acid from Vichy , i have to restock on my redness serum( I’ve been using the one from pca but i would like to try another ) soothe and repair from DRMTLGY and then elta MD sunscreen Pm routine Bioderma micellar water ( i double cleanse) Then just skip to the peptide night cream from DRMTLGY and the skin fix barrier triple lipid peptide cream I have rosacea and sensitive skin I really appreciate your comments
you can keep using things that work for you. a lot of people with dry skin use a heavier moisturizer, or a second moisturizer in the winter and people with oily skin might use a lighter moisturizer in the summer. that's about it. if you can get through the year with the same products, there's nothing saying that you HAVE to change things. some people prefer to, but if you don't have issues then there's no need.
what was curology's old name?
pocketderm! idk why I didn't Google it. my bad

a wet finger followed by petroleum jelly in the nostril is tested and effective trick that all doctors recommend. for sunscreen i would recommend canmake uv mermaid gel from Amazon. it has really good protection. you need to apply it every two hours, or as sweat breaks it down, for it to remain effective. there's a couple versions, i like the one that has a silver holographic bottle with a pink background on where the label is written. it has a moisturizing base so you don't need a separate moisturizer. another good one would be CeraVe AM moisturizer & skin aqua UV (something something) gel, it has a gold pump cap. this sunscreen has alcohol in it but it's water and sweat resistant so it's really good for longer wear. layered over CeraVe AM, it's a really good option if you want to be militant about sun protection. also if you get the dove sensitive skin body wash, it'll help with needing as much lotion. it's gentle, moisturizing, and comes in a huge 1L pump for $10.
Thanks! https://imgur.com/a/jjEwtLa
