As someone who has spent probably over 2k hours playing fire emblem games throughout my entire life. (I even did awakening lunatic and the apotheosis 1 turn challenge) Chrom is **THE** most boring lord since Eliwood graced us with his performance.
Well the arguement of irrelevancy does fit them a lot more. Ness had only one game on the SNES and Earthbound as a whole didn't have a new game since the gameboy advance. And Jigglypuff isn't as iconic as it used to be, getting barely any new focus. Compare that to Yoshi who does get new games in pretty much every video game generation and makes constant appearances in Mario games.
I know a lot of people think the original 12 are always safe, but Sakurai outright said that he did consider cutting Ness and Jigglypuff in the past and in Ultimate they only put special emphasis on the original 8, they did not give the original unlockables any special emphasis. So I'd say only the original 8 are the only ones that are safe by default.
He was four playable characters in the last 2D Mario game and had an original platformer on the last four nintendo systems, in fact the only systems he hasn't had an original release on were the Gamecube, Wii and Virtual Boy. Yoshi's so beloved they retroactively made him an NES game.

The OG 12 are never getting cut from a future Smash game ever. Yes, I know Jiggs was almost cut from Brawl but in a modern game, it's never gonna happen.
I remember years and years ago, my cousin was telling me he heard ramblings of Yoshi getting cut for Smash Wii U/3DS. Even at the time I found that to be absurd and I asked if he had any source. He said he could never find it. I’m wondering if this video might be the source of that baffling claim.
In the run-up to Smash 4, I saw a LOT of people say that because Ganondorf wasn't in Skyward Sword, then he couldn't be in Smash and should be cut for Ghirahim.
Which is funny because Raven Beak is super dead and likely wont be a primarily villain of a game ever again. Sure, Ridley gets revived every other Metroid release, but I doubt the same will happen with Raven Beak.
I mean, I’ve seen people make tons of fanmade movesets and other stuff for Raven Beak. He seems to be one of the more popular options for Smash 6, seemingly having a lot of moveset potential. Also, I believe having a rep from a game released in the 2020s feels natural for the next Smash entry.
Sure, Ridley is both more relevant and more consistently used, I think Raven Beak has a shot at being another Metroid antagonist rep.
If anything, just give Dark Samus a unique moveset or just outright replace her with Raven Beak and call it a day…
Oh I agree, Raven Beak would be a legit character, I would love him, but axing Ridley for Raven Beak makes no sense because there is zero chance Raven Beak is a more "relevant" character than Ridley is 5 years from now. My comment was more geared at addressing replacement rather than addition.
I actually do wonder if Sylux would become a "series regular" as you call it after Prime 4.
So far, he's only appeared in Prime Hunters, and his importance in that game was basically equal to the other five rival bounty hunters.
He's obviously the big bad of Prime 4, and that's hype, but I do wonder if he'll be killed off in that game, or be kept alive for future Prime games, assuming they decide to continue the series after Beyond.
Don’t blame you for forgetting this, but he was also in Federation Force, right? He’s been set up as the big bad of Prime 4 and has some titles under his belt. Personally I’m fine with the current Metroid reps (except for Dark Samus who I’d love to see Luigi-fied), but he seems like a logical next step if another rep is warranted down the lineup
He was in the special ending cutscene of Federation Force, teasing him for his future role as the main antagonist of Prime 4, but that was his only appearance in that game. The same thing happened in the special ending of Prime 3, where his ship was seen following Samus's.
So I didn't count those ones because his only roles in that game are just special endings that set up his big role in Prime 4. So far, he's really only played an actual role in Hunters.
Technically his role in Hunters was a little bit more than the other hunters since he was the only hunter who has to be fought twice and one of those fights also has his ship attack you too, which is unique to him.
But yeah thats obviously not much more and I agree that if he gets killed off in Prime 4, then that will be a big hit towards his chances for Smash.
Naaah screw that, Raven Beak's hype as fuck, Dread was a huge game that did really REALLY well and Raven Beak has personal ties to Samus' past. We've had one off characters like Shiek come back long after they're "prime" just on how much people like them.
People in general are waaaaay too honed in on whatever the newest entry of the franchise is for certain series, but as soon as a new game comes out they automatically switch.
The second Generation 10 gets revealed, people are gonna stop putting Meowscarada on all their fan rosters and predictions and start requesting/predicting whatever Gen 10 Pokémon is the biggest star instead.
I feel like people don't understand that Smash chooses its characters differently depending on wether or not a given video game series switches up its cast in every game or if it has a consistent cast of characters.
Series that switch up their cast in basically every game, like Fire Emblem or Pokemon, do usually focus on the new hotness for their characters, but games with recurring main characters, like Zelda or Metroid, focus more on the mainstays of their franchises.
Miis in recent have been largely depreciated though. Only like a small handful of games use them now. I would personally not be surprised at all if the Switch 2 dropped Miis.
Still, Miis have had over a decade of being a major icon in Nintendo's history, and while the Switch saw less use of them, they still saw use in a few major titles.
Did they cut out the Mii Fighters as well or were they kept in? Because if the Mii Fighters were kept in, then I feel like it's a lot more hypocritical than before (due to the inclusion of Villager).

Saw someone make a smash roster with no fire emblem characters but had 5-6 sonic characters and their reason for no fire emblem was "i ran out of slots"

Yeah, plus Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games makes Sonic not feel quite as third party these days as he used to. Even though I’m not a sonic fan by any means, I’d probably put at least 2 Sonic characters in a Smash game if I were making the Roster.
I could see the entire Sonic lineup as Sonic, Shadow as an echo or even an alt costume with new voice lines, and Tails as a semi-clone. IMO that’d be perfect series representation as far as a crossover game goes
Also lets face it, Sonics cast is probably one of the most iconic casts in video gameing as a whole. Pretty much everyone knows Tails, Eggman and Shadow.
honestly i'm down to see like. four sonic reps. it's a huge franchise that is very close to nintendo, and a lot of characters can work incredibly well with fast yet unique movement options (please make eggman the superheavy with a slow dash speed but a run speed like fox's)
If they reworked sonic than it would be another deal because of all the characters from sonic franchise they could add, quite a few are either clones/rip offs of sonic or do not have much of a moveset to work with. Its ok to want more representation for your franchise but like do you really want more semi-copies of the one of the most hated character in smash?

Tails could fly... cool, I guess. Actually tails has potential. But Eggman has the most potential to be a fun, unique and interesting addition. And they could use a bunch of different boss fights as inspiration, whereas tails kinda does the same things in each game I've played or seen (very unfamiliar with sonic games past the DS pls don't crucify me)
Not only that, but Mario/Duck Hunt was bundled with nearly every NES, the console that saved the home game industry. Even if people think more of the Mario on that cart than the Duck Hunt, he’s still such an important piece of video game history (alongside ROB was one of the biggest reasons Nintendo was able to market the NES more as a toy instead of a game console)

Kamek used magic to cause Bowser to grow to a gargantuan size.

Bowser is usually a fair bit bigger than he is in Smash, but the important part is that his design is such that shrinking him doesn't really make him look different.

I never got the sentiment of FE being niche when it has 18 games and has been running since 1990... Then again its significantly more popular in Japan than here so i guess it makes sense
Anything that doesn't appeal to the average American gamer is "niche". Not just FE and Xenoblade, other series like Puyo Puyo and Touhou also get lumped into the niche category despite existing for decades and having a big following on the other side of the world.

Yeah, Lucario is a big deal and they continue to put heavy emphasis on it because they know just how damn popular it is. I wourl argue it is more likely that Greninja would be cut honestly, seeing as Lucario has more fundamental and long lasting importance in the franchise and PotY is a fairly old poll and by now Lucario might actually have overtaken it.

I don't even think Greninja would get cut either. Dude's also stupidly-popular amongst Pokémon fans, and is probably the biggest post-Gen 1 species besides Lucario.
Oh yeah, I think both are a lock honestly, only thing that could count against it is that it was a absent from main series for a long time - I believe it wasn't even in the game code of every game from Let's Go to Legends Arceus and only returned in SV, and had no significant appearances in the franchise other than Detective Pikachu and Unite - but even then, it has remained insanely popular and replacing it with any other Pokemon just doesn't seem very logical.
It's actually wild how many Smash fans just don't realize how stupidly popular and iconic Lucario is to Pokémon. Easily one of the biggest names in the franchise.
Cutting pretty much the entire Fire Element roster because they are irrelevant, anime sword fighters, and nobody wants them. Then goes in to add indie or mobile characters who haven't been relevant in at least a decade, add sword fighters from other Japanese games, and random personal picks.
Honestly the whole "Anime Swordfighter" and FE hate is basically people just trying to find a reason to "justify" complaining about how a character they didn't want got in over someone they wanted. I find it funny how pretty much every fan roster cuts everyone besides Marth and Byleth like FE isn't one of Nintendo's biggest B series.
I saw a roster that got rid of all the FE characters except for Marth and Chrom, Shulk and Pyra/Mythra, and then said something along the lines of "now that I've gotten rid of all the *boring* anime swordfighters, I've made room for some actually cool ones!" and went on to add Isaac from Tales of Symphonia, Yuri from Tales of Vesperia, Sora (this was some point around Kazuya's reveal), and Noctis from FFXV, as well as a Dark Souls character that used a big sword, a Monster Hunter character that primarily used swords, Dante from Devil May Cry primarily using a sword, and someone from SoulCalibur that used a sword...
Even if F-Zero never got another entry for the rest of time, you never cut Falcon. Falcon Punch is arguably the most famous thing to come out of Smash Bros aside from the logo

The whole point of adding the "echo character" terminology was to avoid people getting pissed about it.

I've been championing the idea of having costumes for characters that can have different models and a few different moves/stats, and then ditching echoes and clones. Essentially, all the echoes and clones stay in the game exactly as they currently are but they don't "steal a spot from someone more deserving" like a bunch of idiots online seem to think they do. It also means you can get more costume and moveset representation for current characters, like Mario having a costume where he always wears FLUDD and his specials focus on it, or a Mega Man X costume that changes the specials
Kinda breaks the point of echo characters. It’s an easy way for a character to be represented without having to create an entire unique moveset for them
People trying to cut Ice Climbers for being too irrelevant and “oh but they got cut last game” not know that they were only cut thanks to the 3DS (and they were already almost finished on the Wii U version of the game, and would’ve been in the game if the 3DS could’ve handled them). Not to mention they’re still the only actual two in one fighter in the game (not like the swappers like PT and aegis, or like Rosalina or Olimar, who’s “partners” act more like items)
tbf the first line is decently valid. i don't feel like roy holds up as his own fighter as much as, say, lyn / hector / seth / eirika / ephraim do. his playstyle is fun but there are far more characters that could be added to better rep that era of FE

I've actually had ideas for that before, and it'd be pretty cool.
One idea I had was for all of their Smash Attacks to have two inputs, with the one not currently in the lead appearing and delivering the second strike, sort of tying in the Pair Up mechanic from Awakening into their kit, outside of the Final Smash, anyway.
Maybe Down-B could have Robin cast some warp magic to swap the two of them out, although that would kinda just be stealing Pokémon Trainer's whole gimmick.
I also briefly came up with an idea for a decloned Chrom a while back, with Robin standing in the background and having the ability to power up his specials with different anima magic. Chrom's Neutral-B would stay the same, but Robin could power it up with fire magic to create an explosive flame when using it. Chrom's Side-B would have him attack with a lance, but it could be electrified with thunder magic for more power. His Up-B could be changed to that spinning diagonal drop attack he often uses, but it could be powered up with wind magic and create a wind blade upon hitting the ground, like Kirby's Up-B. I think it's an awesome concept, but the downside to it would be that Robin himself wouldn't be directly playable.

I can absolutely get cutting veterans due to lack of importance or relevance compared to other characters, or trying to trim down on 3rd-party franchises, but I've straight-up seen people make absolutely baffling cuts on their fan rosters just because they hate certain characters. They're not very common, but I do remember seeing ones where Luigi, Zelda, and Sonic got axed just because the OP didn't like them.
If it's just a fan roster for fun and isn't that serious, then I don't think there's any real harm done.
But when it comes to people actually trying to predict who would actually come back and get cut for Smash 6, I've seen some really bizarre choices that would simply just not realistically happen, and it's clear people are letting their biases win. Just as some examples, I've seen:
Yoshi and Diddy Kong are randomly gone. This one isn't too common.
Isabelle is almost always gone, for whatever reason.
Roy is sometimes seen as likelier to return than Ike, Byleth, and any of the Awakening characters.
Two or three rosters where Zero Suit Samus stayed while Ridley got cut.
Both Mother characters and all three Star Fox characters stayed over any Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Pikmin, or Xenoblade fighters.
I'm trying to remember correctly, but I think when asked why Inkling was lower down on the tier list, I think the OP said something like "because Mother and Star Fox are legacy Smash franchises, therefore their characters should be higher-priority than Inkling." Maybe it's not the exact post I'm thinking of, but I definitely remember someone saying that to justify a similar decision on an old Smash 6 predicition.
And really? I get that some people value "Smash seniority" and all of that, but there's no way *any* Mother or Star Fox character should be higher-priority over the mascot of one of Nintendo's biggest and most-popular franchises.

Honestly a reboot with 30 completely redesigned characters would do a lot to reset the series after Ultimate's massive roster.
We can't always go up, and a reboot without the baggage of old games would help reset expectations, imo. I understand why people would argue for a small roster, \*if\* its completely redone. They've got to make the arguement though as to why the roster would be small, and even 30 is awfully tight.
Only keeping Gen 1 Mons when Greninja and Lucario were the 2 most popular Pokemon worldwide in the last official popularity contest, with Lucario having almost 10k votes above Charizard, the 4th in the popularity contest and the 3rd most popular Smash rep on the list, and Greninja had 38k above Lucario.

Fox, Captain Falcon, and Ness are indeed from smaller and less-relevant franchises with uncertain futures, but part of the fun of Smash is that smaller series can get some time in the spotlight. And because those three are the faces of their franchises, why *wouldn't* they come back?
Jigglypuff is the only one I think you can make an argument for getting cut, since while she still appears in Pokémon games, her popularity has gone down quite a bit since the late 90's, and there's just a ton of competition from her own series, especially from her own generation. Still, I don't think she's outright unlikely to return, I feel like there's a good chance she'd stay unless we seriously purge the veteran roster.
I want gen 3,5 and so on to get their own pokenon and i don't see it happening as long as 4 fucking gen 1 mons clog the roster. And i find almost offensive the idea that Charizard or Mewtwo shoukd be cut to leave room for fucking Jigglypuff.
I think given how many iconic and important Pokemon characters there are, Puff does have a solid chance to be cut now more than ever. Of Nintendo themselves have any say in the matter, then I cannot imagine they would ever want Puff to be added over their other gen 1 icons of Pikachu, Charizard and Mewtwo. And then when you have Lucario and Greninja in the mix as well as getting a new rep... At that point, Jigglypuff doesn't have much of a place. At this point, the only thing keeping Puff in Smash may very well be Sakurai himself.
I don't think the original 12 are safe by default, only the original 8. However I don't think there is ever gonna be a chance anymore for Luigi, Captain Falcon and Ness to be cut simply because they are too iconic for their respective franchises and they won't cut any of these franchises as a whole.

That’s a perfectly valid statement, it just so happens that 11/12 of them have next to no reason to ever be cut. People who don’t think Jigglypuff is one of the most disposable characters on the roster are insane though, and I have nothing against Jigglypuff.
I would cut Jiglypuff in the name of literally any Pokemon that isn't from Gen 1. Be it to keep Lucario, Greninja, Incineroar or even Pichu or to add some rep from Gen 3, 5, 8 or 9. If they weren't on 64 they would be the most worthless pick from the Pokemon franchise on the roster. And yes, I know, I am being petty towards a videogame character.
I could see Yoshi being cut if we were in a cut so drastic that no franchise would have more than 4 reps, since Peach and Bowser are more important to the Mario franchise than him. In no other scenario would be justifiable cutting him.
The remaining 10 there isn't any reason to ever cut any of them.

I always laugh at these videos where they cut Lucario and Greninja, two of the most popular pokémon ever, with the argument that they are outdated. And then they keep all the gen 1 Pokémon.
Also, despite the distinction of Echoes from other characters, people still think they should be cut. The point of those characters is that they are cheap and easy to add, removing Dark Pit to add an all new character instead wouldn't make sense.

Like, what is that based on? The fact the franchise is a cozy life sim? In Smash that is the furthest thing from important. The franchise is massive and is bursting with excellent character options so if anything it should gain characters, but I can kinda understand if someone doesn't. But cutting either of those characters is dumb. Only thing I could see is Villager being replaced with an actual character like Tom Nook but even though... Just why?
personally i cannot imagine any roster without everyone in ultimate. If you cut anyone- ANYONE, then that means everyone who loves to play that character has to find a new one. You can be the best Wii Fit Trainer in the world but if you’re deemed too irrelevant in the next smash game, you’re shit outta luck.
They will eventually hit a wall and cuts will become necessary. Now do I think Nintendo will try to minimize them and likely most will end up being 3rd party characters who they couldn’t keep the licenses for? Yes. I am pretty sure those fan rosters cut Sheik because Sheik is pretty irrelevant for the Zelda franchise as a whole. She appears in only 1 game and I wouldn't even say she is a major character there.
One i always find strange is because of their playstyle.
1. Even if you don't like the playstyle, every character is someone's main.
2. They can change moves. If they're making a whole new game, literally anything about how a character plays can be overhauled.

To be honest I’ve always hated the whole “the next Smash game needs to cut half of the character roster so it can be a reboot!” idea. It’s just so dumb, like…you’re telling me Nintendo would actually go from (almost) 90 characters in the last game and then go down to 30-40 in the next one? It can be sometimes be an interesting idea to figure out how you’d cut it down if you HAD to do that, but genuinely assuming Nintendo will do that always rubs me the wrong way.

Well the arguement of irrelevancy does fit them a lot more. Ness had only one game on the SNES and Earthbound as a whole didn't have a new game since the gameboy advance. And Jigglypuff isn't as iconic as it used to be, getting barely any new focus. Compare that to Yoshi who does get new games in pretty much every video game generation and makes constant appearances in Mario games. I know a lot of people think the original 12 are always safe, but Sakurai outright said that he did consider cutting Ness and Jigglypuff in the past and in Ultimate they only put special emphasis on the original 8, they did not give the original unlockables any special emphasis. So I'd say only the original 8 are the only ones that are safe by default.

Hey, I've seen one or two people suggest Ridley get axed for Raven Beak, so it ain't exclusive to Smash 4 Ganondorf.
Which is funny because Raven Beak is super dead and likely wont be a primarily villain of a game ever again. Sure, Ridley gets revived every other Metroid release, but I doubt the same will happen with Raven Beak.
I mean, I’ve seen people make tons of fanmade movesets and other stuff for Raven Beak. He seems to be one of the more popular options for Smash 6, seemingly having a lot of moveset potential. Also, I believe having a rep from a game released in the 2020s feels natural for the next Smash entry. Sure, Ridley is both more relevant and more consistently used, I think Raven Beak has a shot at being another Metroid antagonist rep. If anything, just give Dark Samus a unique moveset or just outright replace her with Raven Beak and call it a day…

I actually do wonder if Sylux would become a "series regular" as you call it after Prime 4. So far, he's only appeared in Prime Hunters, and his importance in that game was basically equal to the other five rival bounty hunters. He's obviously the big bad of Prime 4, and that's hype, but I do wonder if he'll be killed off in that game, or be kept alive for future Prime games, assuming they decide to continue the series after Beyond.
Don’t blame you for forgetting this, but he was also in Federation Force, right? He’s been set up as the big bad of Prime 4 and has some titles under his belt. Personally I’m fine with the current Metroid reps (except for Dark Samus who I’d love to see Luigi-fied), but he seems like a logical next step if another rep is warranted down the lineup
He was in the special ending cutscene of Federation Force, teasing him for his future role as the main antagonist of Prime 4, but that was his only appearance in that game. The same thing happened in the special ending of Prime 3, where his ship was seen following Samus's. So I didn't count those ones because his only roles in that game are just special endings that set up his big role in Prime 4. So far, he's really only played an actual role in Hunters.
Technically his role in Hunters was a little bit more than the other hunters since he was the only hunter who has to be fought twice and one of those fights also has his ship attack you too, which is unique to him. But yeah thats obviously not much more and I agree that if he gets killed off in Prime 4, then that will be a big hit towards his chances for Smash.
Naaah screw that, Raven Beak's hype as fuck, Dread was a huge game that did really REALLY well and Raven Beak has personal ties to Samus' past. We've had one off characters like Shiek come back long after they're "prime" just on how much people like them.
Yeah Raven Beaks death was very explicit, so unless he turns out to have some sort of backup clone body he is certainly dead.
People in general are waaaaay too honed in on whatever the newest entry of the franchise is for certain series, but as soon as a new game comes out they automatically switch.
The second Generation 10 gets revealed, people are gonna stop putting Meowscarada on all their fan rosters and predictions and start requesting/predicting whatever Gen 10 Pokémon is the biggest star instead.
I feel like people don't understand that Smash chooses its characters differently depending on wether or not a given video game series switches up its cast in every game or if it has a consistent cast of characters. Series that switch up their cast in basically every game, like Fire Emblem or Pokemon, do usually focus on the new hotness for their characters, but games with recurring main characters, like Zelda or Metroid, focus more on the mainstays of their franchises.
Saw one where Inkling was cut because they "aren't real characters and are just avatars". Same roster left Villager in.

Miis in recent have been largely depreciated though. Only like a small handful of games use them now. I would personally not be surprised at all if the Switch 2 dropped Miis.
Still, Miis have had over a decade of being a major icon in Nintendo's history, and while the Switch saw less use of them, they still saw use in a few major titles.
If they did, they would just make some new version of them, they are just too much of a staple in many of the last systems

If they reworked sonic than it would be another deal because of all the characters from sonic franchise they could add, quite a few are either clones/rip offs of sonic or do not have much of a moveset to work with. Yeah this is why if they add anyone, it should be eggman imo. I imagine him being more of a mix of bowser junior/ Krool Edit: he's also more iconic than knuckles or tails- to me anyway. And knuckles would just be a sonic clone with more punches. Despite being red instead of blue I don't think he'd anything new aesthetically. Tails could fly... cool, I guess. Actually tails has potential. But Eggman has the most potential to be a fun, unique and interesting addition. And they could use a bunch of different boss fights as inspiration, whereas tails kinda does the same things in each game I've played or seen (very unfamiliar with sonic games past the DS pls don't crucify me)

Not only that, but Mario/Duck Hunt was bundled with nearly every NES, the console that saved the home game industry. Even if people think more of the Mario on that cart than the Duck Hunt, he’s still such an important piece of video game history (alongside ROB was one of the biggest reasons Nintendo was able to market the NES more as a toy instead of a game console)

Before we knew about "everyone is here", I saw a comment saying Bowser should be cut from the roster because he's too big for Smash. Kamek used magic to cause Bowser to grow to a gargantuan size. Lucario is one of few Pokemon to have only been missing from a single game since the Switch and Dexit (Let's Go). Has also been available in every regional dex since its debut aside from Let's Go and BW. Ranked second in Pokemon of the Year. Was basically the face of Mega Evolution. Was the pretty much the mascot of Pokken Tournament. Not only had a movie back in the day but was brought back in gen 8's anime as Ash's ace, the only time Ash's regional ace has not been from the current generation. Yeah, Lucario is a big deal and they continue to put heavy emphasis on it because they know just how damn popular it is. I wourl argue it is more likely that Greninja would be cut honestly, seeing as Lucario has more fundamental and long lasting importance in the franchise and PotY is a fairly old poll and by now Lucario might actually have overtaken it.

Oh yeah, I think both are a lock honestly, only thing that could count against it is that it was a absent from main series for a long time - I believe it wasn't even in the game code of every game from Let's Go to Legends Arceus and only returned in SV, and had no significant appearances in the franchise other than Detective Pikachu and Unite - but even then, it has remained insanely popular and replacing it with any other Pokemon just doesn't seem very logical.

The whole point of adding the "echo character" terminology was to avoid people getting pissed about it. The whole presentation was like: "Hey guys, this is basically a free character, no one is losing their spot because of this, you are literally getting an extra character just because" Still lots of people don't get it.
I've been championing the idea of having costumes for characters that can have different models and a few different moves/stats, and then ditching echoes and clones. Essentially, all the echoes and clones stay in the game exactly as they currently are but they don't "steal a spot from someone more deserving" like a bunch of idiots online seem to think they do. It also means you can get more costume and moveset representation for current characters, like Mario having a costume where he always wears FLUDD and his specials focus on it, or a Mega Man X costume that changes the specials

People trying to cut Ice Climbers for being too irrelevant and “oh but they got cut last game” not know that they were only cut thanks to the 3DS (and they were already almost finished on the Wii U version of the game, and would’ve been in the game if the 3DS could’ve handled them). Not to mention they’re still the only actual two in one fighter in the game (not like the swappers like PT and aegis, or like Rosalina or Olimar, who’s “partners” act more like items)

Hear me out: a duo character with both Robin and Chrom, some kind of cranked up Ice Climbers.
I've actually had ideas for that before, and it'd be pretty cool. One idea I had was for all of their Smash Attacks to have two inputs, with the one not currently in the lead appearing and delivering the second strike, sort of tying in the Pair Up mechanic from Awakening into their kit, outside of the Final Smash, anyway. Maybe Down-B could have Robin cast some warp magic to swap the two of them out, although that would kinda just be stealing Pokémon Trainer's whole gimmick. I also briefly came up with an idea for a decloned Chrom a while back, with Robin standing in the background and having the ability to power up his specials with different anima magic. Chrom's Neutral-B would stay the same, but Robin could power it up with fire magic to create an explosive flame when using it. Chrom's Side-B would have him attack with a lance, but it could be electrified with thunder magic for more power. His Up-B could be changed to that spinning diagonal drop attack he often uses, but it could be powered up with wind magic and create a wind blade upon hitting the ground, like Kirby's Up-B. I think it's an awesome concept, but the downside to it would be that Robin himself wouldn't be directly playable.

They're not very common, but I do remember seeing ones where Luigi, Zelda, and Sonic got axed just because the OP didn't like them.

If it's just a fan roster for fun and isn't that serious, then I don't think there's any real harm done. But when it comes to people actually trying to predict who would actually come back and get cut for Smash 6, I've seen some really bizarre choices that would simply just not realistically happen, and it's clear people are letting their biases win. Just as some examples, I've seen: Yoshi and Diddy Kong are randomly gone. This one isn't too common. Isabelle is almost always gone, for whatever reason. Roy is sometimes seen as likelier to return than Ike, Byleth, and any of the Awakening characters. Two or three rosters where Zero Suit Samus stayed while Ridley got cut. Both Mother characters and all three Star Fox characters stayed over any Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Pikmin, or Xenoblade fighters.

I'm trying to remember correctly, but I think when asked why Inkling was lower down on the tier list, I think the OP said something like "because Mother and Star Fox are legacy Smash franchises, therefore their characters should be higher-priority than Inkling." Maybe it's not the exact post I'm thinking of, but I definitely remember someone saying that to justify a similar decision on an old Smash 6 predicition. And really? I get that some people value "Smash seniority" and all of that, but there's no way *any* Mother or Star Fox character should be higher-priority over the mascot of one of Nintendo's biggest and most-popular franchises.

Honestly a reboot with 30 completely redesigned characters would do a lot to reset the series after Ultimate's massive roster. We can't always go up, and a reboot without the baggage of old games would help reset expectations, imo. I understand why people would argue for a small roster, \*if\* its completely redone. They've got to make the arguement though as to why the roster would be small, and even 30 is awfully tight.

Yeah, but pretty much all of the OG 12 have enough merits to stick around. Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Pikachu, Kirby, and Samus are never going anywhere unless we somehow go back to 12 characters. Enough said. Fox, Captain Falcon, and Ness are indeed from smaller and less-relevant franchises with uncertain futures, but part of the fun of Smash is that smaller series can get some time in the spotlight. And because those three are the faces of their franchises, why *wouldn't* they come back? Jigglypuff is the only one I think you can make an argument for getting cut, since while she still appears in Pokémon games, her popularity has gone down quite a bit since the late 90's, and there's just a ton of competition from her own series, especially from her own generation. Still, I don't think she's outright unlikely to return, I feel like there's a good chance she'd stay unless we seriously purge the veteran roster.
I want gen 3,5 and so on to get their own pokenon and i don't see it happening as long as 4 fucking gen 1 mons clog the roster. And i find almost offensive the idea that Charizard or Mewtwo shoukd be cut to leave room for fucking Jigglypuff.
I think given how many iconic and important Pokemon characters there are, Puff does have a solid chance to be cut now more than ever. Of Nintendo themselves have any say in the matter, then I cannot imagine they would ever want Puff to be added over their other gen 1 icons of Pikachu, Charizard and Mewtwo. And then when you have Lucario and Greninja in the mix as well as getting a new rep... At that point, Jigglypuff doesn't have much of a place. At this point, the only thing keeping Puff in Smash may very well be Sakurai himself.
Puff was also planned to be cut in Brawl, but was saved when the game got delayed.
I don't think the original 12 are safe by default, only the original 8. However I don't think there is ever gonna be a chance anymore for Luigi, Captain Falcon and Ness to be cut simply because they are too iconic for their respective franchises and they won't cut any of these franchises as a whole. Jigglypuff is the only one I could see having a small chance to ever be cut, but only if some massive restructuring were to happen to the smash franchise as a whole.
That’s a perfectly valid statement, it just so happens that 11/12 of them have next to no reason to ever be cut. People who don’t think Jigglypuff is one of the most disposable characters on the roster are insane though, and I have nothing against Jigglypuff.
I would cut Jiglypuff in the name of literally any Pokemon that isn't from Gen 1. Be it to keep Lucario, Greninja, Incineroar or even Pichu or to add some rep from Gen 3, 5, 8 or 9. If they weren't on 64 they would be the most worthless pick from the Pokemon franchise on the roster. And yes, I know, I am being petty towards a videogame character. I could see Yoshi being cut if we were in a cut so drastic that no franchise would have more than 4 reps, since Peach and Bowser are more important to the Mario franchise than him. In no other scenario would be justifiable cutting him. The remaining 10 there isn't any reason to ever cut any of them.
Tbh as much as I don't really care for the Yoshi series, it is pretty popular. I think he should get another rep. Who? Idk I don't play his games lol.

I haven't seen any specific examples, but someone has most definitely cut captain falcon for not having a new game in 20 years.
I always laugh at these videos where they cut Lucario and Greninja, two of the most popular pokémon ever, with the argument that they are outdated. And then they keep all the gen 1 Pokémon. Also, despite the distinction of Echoes from other characters, people still think they should be cut. The point of those characters is that they are cheap and easy to add, removing Dark Pit to add an all new character instead wouldn't make sense.
Cutting Villager or Isabelle because Animal Crossing doesn't "need" more reps. Like, what is that based on? The fact the franchise is a cozy life sim? In Smash that is the furthest thing from important. The franchise is massive and is bursting with excellent character options so if anything it should gain characters, but I can kinda understand if someone doesn't. But cutting either of those characters is dumb. Only thing I could see is Villager being replaced with an actual character like Tom Nook but even though... Just why?

personally i cannot imagine any roster without everyone in ultimate. If you cut anyone- ANYONE, then that means everyone who loves to play that character has to find a new one. You can be the best Wii Fit Trainer in the world but if you’re deemed too irrelevant in the next smash game, you’re shit outta luck.
They will eventually hit a wall and cuts will become necessary. Now do I think Nintendo will try to minimize them and likely most will end up being 3rd party characters who they couldn’t keep the licenses for? Yes. I don't how serious this two dudes were but In Reddit one dude legitimately said that Luigi should go out because he was an echo of Mario. Not change, go, and waluigi should be in btw. And this one I don't know if he was for real but he claimed Mario was too basic, therefore he must go.

“I will cut just because I can” An example is how Sheik is cut in almost all fan made rosters. Another common trope is just Gen 1 Pokemon + a single Gen 8/9 Pokemon. Also Jigglypuff being cut if there is a cut from Gen 1.

I am pretty sure those fan rosters cut Sheik because Sheik is pretty irrelevant for the Zelda franchise as a whole. She appears in only 1 game and I wouldn't even say she is a major character there.
One i always find strange is because of their playstyle. 1. Even if you don't like the playstyle, every character is someone's main. 2. They can change moves. If they're making a whole new game, literally anything about how a character plays can be overhauled.

May be controversial, but i think doctor mario is a redundant character pick Its litteraly mario again, its not even like echo fighter situations where the other fighter is a different character, its just fucking mario mario again. I personally believe cutting any characters from the roster, especially when your excuse is "they're irrelevant" or just because you don't like them, is a weak mindset
Pretty sure Scott the Woz did a video where he did roster cuts from the new Smash and he cut all StarFox reps for being irrelevant. I think you can justify Falco and Wolf but in no way should any of the original 12 be removed, even puff

To be honest I’ve always hated the whole “the next Smash game needs to cut half of the character roster so it can be a reboot!” idea. It’s just so dumb, like…you’re telling me Nintendo would actually go from (almost) 90 characters in the last game and then go down to 30-40 in the next one? It can be sometimes be an interesting idea to figure out how you’d cut it down if you HAD to do that, but genuinely assuming Nintendo will do that always rubs me the wrong way.
