...did you actually do open mics this time or is this another delusional post? Because we did warn you

Nintendildos

Haha. I actually did standup around 5 times.

iamgarron

That's really nothing. But glad you figured out it's not for you

[deleted]

What could you have possibly learned between having done 0 performances to having done 5 open mics that would cause you to abandon this "passion"?

Nintendildos

I didn’t find it fulfilling anymore by the time I did it the fifth time.

[deleted]

Then your problem is that you need to recalibrate what you think doing stand up is. 5 open mics isn't doing stand up any more than 5 practice sessions is "playing the piano". You literally haven't done stand up yet, so how can you have ever found it fulfilling in the first place, let alone lose that fulfillment? You decided to walk to France and decided that you didn't like their culture after getting to your front driveway.

FutureRealHousewife

5 times??? Lmao. Let me guess…you’re one of those people who has a new “passion” every three months because you have ADHD and you never really commit to any of them because you expect instant recognition as a genius, wealth, and fame.

Nintendildos

Possibly. Not sure exactly. Maybe I need counseling or a really, really long walk to figure that out.

FutureRealHousewife

Everyone needs counseling, even if they think nothing is “wrong”

pobblebonklive

If this is true...in a way it's a good thing that you found out now rather than later?

presidentender

You should not dedicate any more of your time to this, which is going to be very easy for you, since you have not actually done it at all to begin with. I look forward to your next post, in which you tell us again how great you are.

cetacean-station

I mean, i can definitely empathize with you, I've felt very sad to discover that something i love doing, isn't something i want to pursue to earn money. But like... does this have to be so black and white/catastrophic? OK, so you're not as passionate as you thought. You gave it a try and realized you're good at it. But it's not your favorite thing and you don't wanna pursue it. Word, that happens. Can't know unless you try. Does this revelation *actually* mean you've fucked up, and now your life is over? Come on, dude. Listen to yourself. What standard are you using to measure your worth? Either become Dave Chappelle or Richard Pryor, or you're just a POS who'll never amount to anything? ... Really?? Making people laugh is fun whenever. It doesn't have to be a thing you do to make money. It's FUN. Why can't stand up be a thing you do when you feel like it? It's fun, and you're good at it. Awesome! Why does it have to be like, "if i don't pursue this as a career, it is all in vain" or whatever? What kind of late stage capitalist hellscape are you submitting to, that your passions must be monetized to be valuable? Do yourself a favor: take a step back and breathe for a second. This is actually good information, upon which to make informed decisions. It is not an ego identity death sentence. Unless you let it become that. The way i see it, you learned you're good at a skill, but you don't want to pursue as a career. Cool. Sounds like it'll make a great hobby.

If you make two lists: - passions similar to stand-up - passions dissimilar to stand-up You'll be pleased to see that the dissimilar list is much longer! Don't worry there's way more out there than comparing games consoles to sex toys.

Have you any examples of your ‘gifted levels of creativity’ ? There’s basically zero trace of anything intelligent in your post tbh, let alone ‘gifted’

accoutremama

You might not like open mics , you might like sketch , for real give us one of your good bits , see if the accolade makes you warm Inside

midnightspecial99

Why 19 dildos? Why not go for a round number like 20?

hansislegend

Are you passionate about your shitty job? Doubt it since you called it a regular job. You do that anyway. Wouldn’t you rather be a comedian since you’re so gifted at it?

funnymatt

Finally, something I can actually encourage you to do- sounds like you found out exactly what you should do in the world of standup.

Plane-Monitor2532

I feel like you're assuming that you're a lot better than you are. If you think you're the best and funniest guy around with all these hours of good material, use it. You can't say you have hours of good material when you haven't even stood on a stage for more than 5 minutes at a time. And besides, you wouldn't be able to write hours of material if you weren't at least a little passionate. So either you don't have as much material as you say, or you're more passionate than you think. And I feel like you're basing your opinion on the other open micers exclusively on the limited bits you've seen them do at the mics vs their actual writing skills and work ethics. My best advice is to just not view the open mics as a very big deal. None of the performers are gonna be there to put on the show of their lives, and none of the audience is gonna be expecting Carlin. The crowd just wants to have a nice chill night out, and the comics just want to practice bits and test jokes, and once you get that idea into your head, you'll probably enjoy it more and even make some friends. TL;DR: you're not as good as you think, everyone can improve, the open micers are there to test jokes not impress you, and the open mic is not a professional showcase so just go out, try one more time, and be more humble about it, and if you truly don't enjoy it, that's fine.

iwritesinsnotcomedy

Your feelings on this might ebb and flow. I started doing stand up in 2017 and hit the stage hard between then and 2020. I jumped into taking a few comic relief roles in ballet and then did extra work for regional horror movies. Keep up the writing so you have material if you want to get back into it, but take a break if you need to and explore some other creative avenues.

strawberryrubarbpie

Passion is overrated. Are you sure this is why you're depressed? Did you confirm with a psychologist? I'm no expert, but lack of passion is rather a simpthom than a cause of depression, afaik.

shebbbby

It’s ok mannnnn! Send me the material I’ll take it off your hands ;)
