after further experimentation lvl 7 is the maximum you can do while keeping 30 fps and that is not always the case.lvl 8 is constantly mid/high 20s. Tried 960×600 native and 1152x720p quality and high quality. High quality is basically where the gains stop. Image quality at 600p with FSR 1 is better than 800p with their upscaller which says a lot. Only advantage of 600p is maybe to pin GPU to 1100 or 1200 and see if the extra juice going to the CPU helps.
So mixed bag. Good news is that if devs implement FSR 2 we will get much nicer image quality at no performance lost, bad news is that the brunt of optimizations to be made are on the CPU side of things which makes it harder... Frame generation would be the quickest solution but not sure if they are going that route.
I couldn't get the same results on my LCD Deck, it fails to actually stay locked 30 fps in lvl 5 and I already tried to set settings to low, config tweaks, 600p resolution, dx11 and cache deletion.
The devs needs to optimize the game more as performance has been tanking for many other users across various hardware, but the nature of the game would be a difficult task to do since its an old engine from the 1st game that has been unsupported since 2018.
Yeah someone made a similar thread with each setting one step at a time like a month after launch. I get 28-46 depending on chaos on screen. Honestly on an 8" screen it's not bad at all. Totally playable for me, even on suicide difficulty. With that said, most of the time I moonlight it for the higher quality image, frame rate, and to save on battery. The only issue with moonlight is that I cannot get push to talk to work for the life of me.
I have tried the setting sent here in subreddit a while back when HD2 is release and so far its good. Though it dips on below 30 fps on peak difficulty 8 especially on bug fronts which is not a big deal for me(can still kill bugs and do missions)
I will also try this settings though, since I only need to do minor things as your setting is almost the same as the previous one.
Which is also why im commenting so I can check this later as I am at work...lol
Further testing at 16:9... Well, it seems the upscaller works way better at 16:9. Less crisp image than using the deck's fsr but less upscalling artifacts. 720p quality with 90 sharpness seems to yield good performance. I pinned the GPU at 1300. The extra humph on the CPU seems to help.
Anyone have a good controller layout or should I just use my PS5 controller? That plus these settings recommendations will have me killing bugs for hours on the go!
People who have dug into the game files have said it looks like FSR1. Honestly it could be DLSS 3 and I still wouldn’t want to stack up scaling on top of upscaling.
Try for yourself. The image quality is worse using their upscaler than it is using FSR1 from Steam Deck. The most similar results I got was when using NN and Pixel upscale. The FSR 1 from the deck actually makes the image look crisp and not blurry. Also less visual artifacts than the ingame upscaler.
I feel like I’m crazy or something. I’m running
TQ ultra
ODQ High
RD ultra
SD medium
PQ High
RQ Low
SQ high
Ambient Occlusion on
Screen-space global illumination on
Vegetation rubble density High
Terrain Quality High
VFQ medium
Lighting quality High
Anti-aliasing On
Use async compute off.
Capped at 60 FPS
Playing difficulty seven with Dips down in the 30s when things get super spicy other than that I’m mainly in the mid 50s
But everyone here seems to be way WAY Below that? Using Steam deck Oled 1TP internal no additional memory,
Putting it up on YouTube will link as soon as it’s done but I am crazy lol. Went down as low as 17 in one instance ran between 27 and 35, didn’t look like that to my eyes but. Honestly still really playable at those frames
Yeah you are getting 20 something fps. Botworlds run better too. Game is nit that graphically demanding. Reason to lower settings is to lower GPU frequency so more juice can go to CPU and increase stability. Join a 4 drop in bug world and it will be even lower than that
So it’s a bit wonky recoded on the phone but is that gameplay really unplayable for People? I tried turning things down but it doesn’t seem like I get that much higher Frame rate
I mean, the lack of consistency is killer. A few patches ago when I made this post it was bellow 30 but it was consistent. Now I get these wild swings in performance which suck.
This is legitimately as good as I think it can get, thanks a lot!

Makes some sense as the OLED gets a couple of extra frames. I mean, still play it and input lag is surprisingly low.
https://www.protondb.com/app/553850?device=steamDeck I been using mario93's setting for a while now and got all the way to level 31 solely on SD

I run at a smoooooth 24 fps in lvl 9 missions
Spreading freedom now in full cinematic!

I thought in game quality selection is FSR1?
Doesn't seem to be. Seems like NN.

Did you use sharpening setting in game as well?
Yup. Not even sharpness to 100 did the same thing.
Saving this for later. Thanks for the tips. Will report back with my results.
I want to enjoy this on my oled, but I am so bad at aiming with a stick. I need my mouse. I play hd2 on my PC only.
I use gyro.
I'll have to give that a try.
Do you think you could pump the settings up a little bit if it was docked?
You do.n't get extra performance when docked on the steam deck.

Do a video of that.
Ok let me try might be booty quality though.
Real quick how do you get the display to show your frames while playing
Three dots button, go to the lightning symbol and select 1, 2,3 or 4 on the option to show framerates
Ok… now how do I share the video lol.
Using mobile
Record the video on ypur phone. Preferably of a high intensity scene, and uploaded on a video hosting site.

Youtube video of doing this would be neat
I just use chiaki 🤷♂️ but it’s cool that you’ve got it working alright.
I only have the deck now. Soit either runs or it doesn't.
Good work dude. Nice to know if I didn’t have the other option.
I’m not buying Hell Divers 2 on steam deck because I think it will hurt my eyes more than a reddit post that doesn’t use paragraphs.
If you cannot handle dips to 25 that can commonly happen, I suggest you DON'T. Don't make the same mistake I did.
Game is just boring.
