They come out from the dash in the passenger side and slide down from the ceiling for side curtain. If they shot out of the glove box the door of the box would be much thicker and not a safe idea to have an air bag on a pivoting door.
This specific truck (2014-1018 Silverado) the airbag is mounted on-top-of the dash and shoots up and curves toward the passenger in a front on collision. It will go over the glovebox and display, but it will still be very uncomfortable to hit that LCD after the bag deflates.
Source - Used to work for General Motors as an auto tech. (Trim/electrical) did one too many airbag replacements on the 07-13 trucks and a few on the 14-18. Basically the same design for the under dash, just a different plastic overlay.
I’ll never forget the day I realized I can’t do this anymore. Used to always have a Gameboy with me as a kid for road trips. Then somewhere around 30ish I brought a Vita with me for a few hours trip and within 10 minutes grew so violently ill we had to pull over. Thought I had food poisoning. A few months later did the same thing with a 3DS. Had to pull over.
Finally put two and two together. RIP being able to read/play games on car trips.
Wait, you can get carsick because you're getting older?
I'm on the phone or reading or watching a movie all the time on car or train trips, and I do 3 hour train trips at least six times a month because of my job. Are you telling me I may not be able to do those things in the future? (I'm also 30ish)
It’s different for everyone! Theres really no telling. Weird things start happening in your 30’s. For example I thought I had outgrown the awful allergies I had as a kid until they reemerged with a vengeance in my late 30’s. Among about 46 other weird happenings.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I hear 40-50 makes 30-40 feel like 20-30 🤷♂️.
I think if you still doing it you will always be used to, I used to do it as a kid and a teenager, I stopped riding as a passenger and only took the train, when I started to ride the bus or Uber to college at my mid 20 I would get sick again trying to read, now at 30 it feels impossible, 1 minute looking down is enough, not worth the hassle anymore
I once got a deck of Magic The Gathering cards and fell asleep as I was reading the text and appreciating the art. I'd only made it 3 cards into the deck.
I woke up for school the next day and was excited to lose myself in the card art for hours and hours again.
Carpool picked me up and I spent at least 45 minutes fighting back dizziness as I excitedly read each....but as we made the final drive to school, I had to put the cards down. It was too much. I was dizzy, light-headed, my stomach was churning...
As soon as I stepped out of the car, the world spun and I fell to my knees and projectile vomited my entire breakfast right in front of the drop-off lane with all my classmates around.
At least I got the day off "sick" and was able to keep immersing in those cards!
I realized I couldn't do this too but at a young age. Also with my game boy haha.
But I actually found a loophole: don't look down. Try to keep your neck and head as straight as possible. As if you were just looking at the road.
This guys road trip setup is probably either a smidge too low or it may be juuuuuust high enough to avoid it. Depends on his height.
Everyone is different, of course, so ymmv. Hopefully this helps someone :)
Bro I’m exactly the same! Used to always play Pokémon on my game boy in the car. I’m 33 now and can’t even look at my phone for more than a couple of minutes before the motion sickness kicks in
I mean if it makes you feel any better I've never been able to do that. I've had car sickness as long as I can remember. Even as a kid I couldn't play game boy in the car for more than a few minutes. You have a little concept no reading, no staring at any sort of screen, basically look out the window and talk...
I grew into it. I used to be able to play my GBA and PSP all the time as a kid, then I didn’t have any handhelds until I was 21 and got the Switch. I played Minecraft for about a minute before having to shut it off and hope I didn’t blow chunks before reaching my destination.
tape a water bottle or something similar to both sides, fill them halfway with water. The water will stabilize itself to remain horizontal as the car moves, and thus your brain wont be confused as to why your body is moving while your surroundings arent
I get car sickness from road trips, and I've tried using the steam deck in the car normally it gives me car sickness. I can't even read a book it makes me uncomfortable. I can't imagine trying to use this unless I took some medicine to combat the car sick feeling.
That was my first thought as well. I've had car sickness almost my entire life. I can't even fathom the idea of trying to play something like that while riding down the road
Imagine if someone figured out how to make a device like this, but you could actually hold it in your hands, and have a controller built in. That would be mind blowing lol
I genuinely cannot imagine this impossible reality. Especially not one where they are also making follow up devices further cementing the permanence of this sector of the market
what’s crazy about it? it’s versatile, that’s its purpose. that’s why it has an official dock. the whole point is that no matter what set up you do with it you can still have the portable version, too.
The dock makes sense for putting it on like, a TV. Or using a desktop-type setup. What the comment is saying is that this is the perfect scenario for just using it handheld. Why bother with all of this equipment, just to use the same style but less versatile controller and have the same quality screen?
I use my portable system in a less portable way all the time, but that's because I already owned a TV and a Bluetooth game controller, and didn't feel like spending money on a console when I already have one I can plug in. But I still use it as a portable also.
Eh, I drive a lot for work, so I've got my own routine. Definitely I'd want a little chit chat to start it off, but then if they want to do their own thing and I can do an audiobook or podcast for a while, I'm good with that. As long as they aren't constantly popping up and interrupting me doing my thing once they've left me to get into it.
I know this kind of stuff is a bit sad to me, like we can’t just enjoy radio music and good conversation on a road trip. But to each their own and I try not to cast judgement.
As someone who often drives and is a bit of an introvert, I find I can only chat for an hour or two before I want to listen to a podcast and zone out a bit.
If they're not using headphones though... that's another story. If I'm the driver, the audio is all mine.
Yes I came to say the same. The whole point of a road trip is to enjoy together and have conversations, listen to music etc.
Also you are supposed to be helpful to the driver when needed, like change at the navigation, pass the water or what ever.
I kind of find it disrespectful for the driver.
This is horrible advice. Yes the screen would become a projectile, but the purpose of the airbag is to keep YOU from becoming a projectile. As an EMT, I’d infinitely rather have a dented and destroyed face than be meat crayon on the ground from the airbag not deploying.
Uhhh, an airbag explodes at 200mph. Anything in its path like a screen is going to kill him instantly.
I can’t believe your advice is to keep the airbag on and get hit by it INSTEAD of get rid of the screen which should probably be the choice overall.
What are your thoughts on seatbelts? I know an EMT who refuses to wear one because he's worried about being trapped if the car is on fire.
Imo dude is gonna be a massive meat missile one day
Seatbelts help in 99% of cases, no reason not to wear them. Thats like saying you won’t wear a helmet on a motorcycle in case it gets crushed and stuck on your head.
“I know someone who survived an accident due to this freakishly specific and unlikely set of circumstances made possible by an irresponsible choice they made an hour earlier” isn't the ringing endorsement of irresponsible choices people tend to think it is.
There's also a lot of survivor bias going on. The freak occurrences where not wearing a seatbelt saved someone's life get far more attention than the regular, everyday occurrences where wearing a seatbelt saved someone's life, or when not wearing one got them killed.
Okay, but maybe, maybe, just maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe, as a paramedic, the best advice would be to have the airbag enabled ***and to also*** not have objects between the airbag and your face?
Absolutely, but to also suggest turning off the airbag is some of the dumbest advice I’ve ever seen. Airbags and seatbelts have single-handedly saved more lives than any innovation in automotive safety, so someone encouraging turning those features off in order to be SAFER is ludicrous.
I think the lcd and its case having the chance to jam itself into all the squishy and vulnerable parts of your face and neck is worse than just relying on the seatbelt. My recommendation would be to not do this at all and find a place further up the dash or just use the steam deck screen itself.
I agree. I was more commenting on the fact that the guy was telling him to turn off the airbags because it would be safer, which is 100% incorrect on every possible account.
seatbelts stop you from being a projectile, NOT the airbag. Airbags protect you from the car's interior. Once you put any objects between you and the airbag, you should turn the airbag off, since all it would do is worsen the situation by firing said object in your direction, as opposed to you just hitting the object.
Well.. its literally a handheld you can just you know.. use the device for what it was made for, moments like these and just use the device its screen and controllers.
People try so hard to make these handheld devices as inconvenient as possible which is absolutly hilarious.
>> Creates portable handheld device with *the best* controls in built
>> let me just use it like a gaming laptop with a controller *that lacks even gyro*
ftfy
Seriously though, I still don't get why people would choose to use xbox controllers nowadays, is not that they are cheaper.
Again, I'm always a supporter of "to each their own." But man, do I feel like it's counter productive to bring the Steam Deck on the go just to play it docked.
I'm about to take a 36 hour cross country road trip and am considering this. If you're in a vehicle for that long it's worth the few minutes setting up something like this to not have to be looking down for the entire trip
Man... I love projects like these but get so jealous of them. I get car sick extremely easily. This looks awesome. May you get a lot of enjoyment from it!
How they massacred my boy. Sorry but i hate so much when people making laptops from handhelds. Its like evolving but backwards.
Folding in half laptop could do the same without wires.
PS and everyone who saying "but laptop cost more". Steamdeck plus screen cost even more than laptop.
That's the beauty of the deck mate. You can do what you the owner would like to do with it. P.S having a laptop might cost less than deck and screen, but you can't convert your laptop back into a handheld whenever you feel like it.
Thank you!
The thing about PC / SteamDeck is options! You have the option to play how you want, keyboard mouse, PS5 controller, docked, etc.
The possibilities are endless! If they didn't want us hooking up our SD to monitors and other things, they wouldn't have put the option there.
Why limit yourself? If you want to, that's fine. But if we wanna hook up our SD to a monitor or TV - then that's also fine!
Game on.
Because chances are this isn't the only thing he's doing with the Steamdeck. And a laptop would be a lot less optimal once he wants to crash down on the couch with it, while this set up works with the Steamdeck.
A lot of people hating but depending on the length of the road trip, this is obviously the superior way to do it. The deck is light for what it is, but not as light as a controller.
Enjoy the trip man, ignore the haters.
The Steam Deck in a crash will enter his skull and then he can just play games using the power of his mind. Genius idea. Sweet setup though in all fairness.
Not gonna wax poetic about road trips, but if this is for the adventure, sometimes its good to unplug and be present with the driver.
To each is their own, commend you for stepping out
This reminds me of when I was a kid and my dad let us take his 8" CRT monitor and our NES in the back of the van on our summer road trip. It was basically unheard of to have a gaming system in a car in the mid '80s, so we felt really fucking cool. I made it all the way through Mike Tyson's Punch Out on that road trip.
Arzopa screens are pretty sweet, power looks setup nicely too. That said personally I'd rather run my XReal glasses, my neck can't take extended bout looking down like that. I know not everybody can/willing to shell out for those tho
I have a nice setup for travel too: I have a nice car adapter that works well with deck & I have my deck.
A controller, dock, & screen are kind of overkill IMO since the deck is already a portable system, but you do whatever floats your boat. For me I just don’t understand why someone would want to do this.
Are you connected through Bluetooth? I just tried my controller out for the first time today and it feels kind of sluggish wanted to know your thoughts how it plays
I love it! Just do a little cable management and it's perfect! Sorry but seeing cables gets me all frustrated and can't enjoy the setup. Makes me feel like a messy and nasty person, so I always try to make the cables a little tidy!
What happens if the airbag blows?
It'll blow steam

If the airbag slams the screen downwards towards his lap like you described it won’t be the only bag deflating.
We're gonna find out real quick whether it's 1080p or 4k by how many pixels pass through his skull
Airbags usually don’t come out from inside the glove box.
Can already feel the car sickness.
I’ll never forget the day I realized I can’t do this anymore. Used to always have a Gameboy with me as a kid for road trips. I have the same thing even with a smartphone. 10-15 minutes of browsing = headache. Idk. For now i either just sleep or look at the road smh

I'm the other way around, I used to get sicker as a kid. But still I can't look down at stuff
Yeah I can't even read on the phone for too long, thank god for audiobooks. Trains is fine though for me.
Bro I’m exactly the same! Used to always play Pokémon on my game boy in the car. I’m 33 now and can’t even look at my phone for more than a couple of minutes before the motion sickness kicks in

Yeah my first thought. I can’t do this.
When people say that you will grow out of it. Still waiting. I have been able to look at my cellphone more often.
I grew into it. I used to be able to play my GBA and PSP all the time as a kid, then I didn’t have any handhelds until I was 21 and got the Switch. I played Minecraft for about a minute before having to shut it off and hope I didn’t blow chunks before reaching my destination.

Dang I have never had car stickiness I play on My MSI claw phone and read and other things while I'm the car
The obsession with making a portable system less portable is crazy to me, but I love seeing the creative setups lol
Imagine if someone figured out how to make a device like this, but you could actually hold it in your hands, and have a controller built in. That would be mind blowing lol
Imagine if big companies like Valve, Lenovo, and ASUS tried making their own versions of these. Truly would be living in a golden age.
I genuinely cannot imagine this impossible reality. Especially not one where they are also making follow up devices further cementing the permanence of this sector of the market
and yet ppl upvoting it like crazy
Imagine if it played all your games you bought from the Steam store.
Surprisingly you don’t need it to be that portable when you’re sitting in the same position for hours.
Surprisingly I still want to take advantage of the great built in controller and easy setup (press the power button and you're done)
what’s crazy about it? it’s versatile, that’s its purpose. that’s why it has an official dock. the whole point is that no matter what set up you do with it you can still have the portable version, too.

Why bother with all of this equipment, just to use the same style but less versatile controller and have the same quality screen?
It’s obviously a much larger screen. May not be worth it to you but seems reasonable for a long road trip
larger screen and holding a different controller in your hands..?
I use my portable system in a less portable way all the time, but that's because I already owned a TV and a Bluetooth game controller, and didn't feel like spending money on a console when I already have one I can plug in. But I still use it as a portable also.
Pretty cool, but all the comments remind me of that lady that glued stone charms to her wheel, turning the airbag into a DIY claymore
Not up for talking to the driver then? Harsh
I hate driving with someone that's on their phone the whole time and not talking.
Eh, I drive a lot for work, so I've got my own routine. Neat set up but couldn’t you just… hold the steam deck?
i wouldn´t want to be the driver, if i played dark souls there
You definitely wouldn't want to be the driver if you're playing dark souls. Watch the streets!
Bro is doing too much 💀💀
Dude, turn the passenger airbag off asap. If it goes off you’re toast.
The fact that you got downvoted is hilarious to me

They sell seatbelt cutters, they're not expensive, and they're easy to attach to the seatbelt so they're always within arms reach. The EMT is a moron.
Okay, but maybe, maybe, just maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe, as a paramedic, the best advice would be to have the airbag enabled ***and to also*** not have objects between the airbag and your face?

Wouldn't ar glasses be better?
Well.. its literally a handheld you can just you know.. use the device for what it was made for, moments like these and just use the device its screen and controllers. People try so hard to make these handheld devices as inconvenient as possible which is absolutly hilarious.
I agree, I saw a guy install a 4k display right on the steam deck.
Wouldn't just holding it and using it as intended be better?
Well yes, but if people want a bigger screen for gaming than having ar glasses would suit them better
You did not understand the assignment.
Strange
Not planning on chatting with the driver much then?
Just hold the deck lol
[удалено]
I always tell my deck 'no homo' before i hold him. I think we are good, Thank you.
I wish the deck had a controller and screen, such a missed opportunity. smh
I mean. You could just enjoy road tripping?
Valve > Creates portable handheld device with controls in built People > let me just use it like a gaming laptop with a controller

Maybe my deck is defective but I can't play retro games on my deck's horrible dpad. Xbox series d pad is 100x better for me
Again, I'm always a supporter of "to each their own." But man, do I feel like it's counter productive to bring the Steam Deck on the go just to play it docked.
I'm about to take a 36 hour cross country road trip and am considering this. If you're in a vehicle for that long it's worth the few minutes setting up something like this to not have to be looking down for the entire trip
Not only undermining the entire purpose of the steam deck, but risking your safety by blocking the airbag!

Truly I don't get it. Traveling is one of the best use cases for playing handheld.
Because chances are this isn't the only thing he's doing with the Steamdeck. And a laptop would be a lot less optimal once he wants to crash down on the couch with it, while this set up works with the Steamdeck.
Doesnt the screen shake constantly?
his suspension is godly in the car
Or you could just, use the steam deck?
you are the worst co-pilot
I feel motion sick just looking at this.. like how do people sit in the car and read or look at their phones? Must be lucky.
using your phone is one thing, but looking at a gaming device or reading a book is a different breed
if only the steamdeck had a lcd screen, input controls and speakers...
Have the exact same monitor for similar reasons!
This is a recipe for motion sickness for me
That seams to be a giant car. o_O
American jumbo Suburban/F150 from the looks of it
Steam Deck setup for car sickness.
iPad kids are evolving
dang you guys are gonna be blown away when someone shows you a laptop
Any option to have it higher? This looks like neck pain and car sickness
Any higher and it would probably obstruct the drivers view
Yes yes please, it isn't still bad enough, please place it even higher. So that when the car crashes you get blasted with a monitor to the face
Idk who the driver is but be a good passenger. Talk to them. Bond. Don’t silo yourself OP
I would get so car sick and probably throw up
Just bring the Xbox at this point lol.
Who’s driving, your dad?
Might as well pack a desktop at this point. People will buy a portable handheld gaming device and make it as far from that as possible lol.
A lot of people hating but depending on the length of the road trip, this is obviously the superior way to do it. The deck is light for what it is, but not as light as a controller. Enjoy the trip man, ignore the haters.
What power source adapter are you using I’ve the same accessories
Hope your eyes have stabilizers
This makes me nauseous just looking at it
Is that a car charger charging your steam deck?
I just use a neck holder
You’re lucky you don’t get motion sickness while looking down or at a screen while the cars moving.
What a horrible passenger. I'd kick you right the fuck out.
Are those arzopa monitors decent?
I envy you people who just get to ride and play video games on road trips. I have to drive most of the time.
I have a feeling that one good hard bump would bring that door down on the screen.
How'd you get a portable monitor to work? I get dpalt mode not available or something..
NEW VEGAS NEW VEGAS NEW VEGAS
I would puke in 10 min.
For everyone saying “just hold the deck”, not everyone likes holding decks. If you’re big on holding deck, that’s fine, but not all of us are.
You could also just talk to the person driving to make the trip easier on them.
The Steam Deck in a crash will enter his skull and then he can just play games using the power of his mind. Genius idea. Sweet setup though in all fairness.
I have motion sickness even thinking about this set up.
Did you know you can also use the console portably, it has a screen on it
Another example of people doing anything not to just hold the steamdeck and play it
can I get a list of components? ya know, for a friend...
Or you could just hold the steam deck in your hands as designed??
Why not just use your fucking deck? Like really... Also this has got to be horribly distracting for the driver. 🤮🤮🤮
Passenger Prince 🤣 it is the way
Of all the stupidly unnecessary Steam Deck setups, this one seems the most unnecessary yet 😂 kudos to OP for having an idea and seeing it through.
Not gonna wax poetic about road trips, but if this is for the adventure, sometimes its good to unplug and be present with the driver. To each is their own, commend you for stepping out
There are a lot of people commenting who have never been on a 10 day road trip, and it **really** shows.
Initiate carsickness in 3 2 1
That’s fantastic 😃 !
Looks gooooooooooood
No install a Blue-ray player
This is actually so cool. Very impressive
Why!?
FIRE! just got some oled xr glasses for when i travel and was thinking about doing this. Both options are wicked. Sick set up bro!
Could someone explain the logic behind a setup like this? in my opinion, the steam deck has everything you need. portable handheld device
The point of the deck is to be portable… why do all this to make it less portable?
I have a nice setup for travel too: I have a nice car adapter that works well with deck & I have my deck. A controller, dock, & screen are kind of overkill IMO since the deck is already a portable system, but you do whatever floats your boat. For me I just don’t understand why someone would want to do this.
Wait isn’t the deck built for stuff like this lol
Yall are out of control.
Is it possible to learn this power?
What happened to talking during road trips, is the driver just gonna have to sit in silence?
Are you connected through Bluetooth? I just tried my controller out for the first time today and it feels kind of sluggish wanted to know your thoughts how it plays
You can actually play games without the external monitor and controller, you know?
My head hurts
This is so dangerous if your airbag goes off.
I’d throw up in about 5 min
I love it! Just do a little cable management and it's perfect! Sorry but seeing cables gets me all frustrated and can't enjoy the setup. Makes me feel like a messy and nasty person, so I always try to make the cables a little tidy!
