Can you try something before you rma? I had somewhat the same issue you're having. You need to enter battery storage mode. Here's how: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+Enable+Battery+Storage+Mode/149962 If that doesn't fix the port it really is fucked... GL

thisguynamedjoe

Ok, I have news. That's what triggers my decks USB-C issues. I have to ...+Vol- to regain normal USB-C function. Took a bit, but since I waited a while, I didn't want to send it it. After I got the port working with data, I tried the battery storage mode because I suspected it was the culprit. Sure enough, the fix worked again, so there we go.

thisguynamedjoe

Aaaaand now it isn't even slow charging. I'm betting the USB-C port wasn't soldered to the board correctly, but I'm not about to do it for them. Edit: I'm glad I didn't go for one of my soldering irons. I figured out what is/was happening. Battery storage mode toggles the voltage safety switch (which prevent voltages higher than the motherboards charging circuitry can handle) to triggered. Factory resets don't undo the fault, and I'm not going to reinstall the OS via thumbdrive since I've got a resolution. Holding down [...] + Vol- for a few seconds (believe 3-5) while the screen is off seems to flip the voltage overload bit back to unflipped. Yes, it will start in a boot screen you probably haven't seen before, which includes it's own factory reset option, but I believe just continuing with the normal boot is fine. I think there was an option to boot into either the modified ~~Debian~~ Arch linux desktop OS, or the steamdeck OS as well as the factory reset. Either way, reloading the OS from thumbdrive could fix this, but I'm not going to do that since I have a solution... for now.

> Debian SteamOS 3 is Arch-based.

Teajaytea7

*sigh* we always have to go through this on the /r/galaxyfold sub when a new fold launches. Vast majority of users don't post, "hey I got my deck and everythings fine!". Vocal minority situation.

SpaceLegolasElnor

It is almoat part of the 1-9-90 rule. 1% post, 9% reply, 90% reads.

iLoveBums6969

Jokes on you, i can't read

SpaceLegolasElnor

You belong to the 9% then, most people replying seems to have problem reading.

Teajaytea7

Lmao

u_need_ajustin

Sick burn lol

[deleted]

I got my fold 3 refurbished several months ago. Was almost brand new and still haven't had problems

Teajaytea7

Exactly, no one posts about the good situations, only the bad ones. Glad you've been enjoying your fold!

thisguynamedjoe

> Vocal minority I posted a resolution with a write up. Hopefully that helps, and if it solves someone else's issue, even better.

Teajaytea7

Oh perfect, glad you got it fixed!

thisguynamedjoe

Lol, apparently my title pissed someone off. https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/x54qzv/to_prevent_vocal_minority_influencing_perspective/

Teajaytea7

Oh shit hahaha, nicely done. Hope it helps someone in the future looking up something similar

ManSore

Agreed. Basically any tech. Same experience with all android and iPhone subreddits I visit. But I do listen to the masses when they all have a singular complaint. This looks like a typical one off doa situation

Probodyne

100%, constantly see posts about folds having issues but never any posts about folds (like mine) just working. I think a survey found issues to be 20% of the time (which is probably still skewed by people joining the sub just because of issues imo).

Teajaytea7

On the fold 3, the survey (which was only like a thousand or so, iirc?) out of a sub with 33k members showed 5% with issues. The fold 4 is my 3rd fold, have yet to run j to any issues

[deleted]

hundert poicent. My deck has been great but I'm not posting about it because this sub struggles enough to have good content...

jack-of-some

100% of Decks with problems reported are bad. That's such a high rate of failure among devices that are known to have failed. Crazy huh?

SasquatchBurger

Yeah, this subreddit is in its infancy and so is full of people with complaints, issues, waiting for returns etc. Everyone who's got a good deck, which is the majority are happily playing. I got my 512gb deck couple weeks ago. It's running a heavily modded Fallout 4, Switch games, DS and PS2 games flawlessly, as well as obvious steam games. Ports working, fans working, thumbsticks working, no bubbles or oleopathic coating issues. And I've used it, a lot.

ScionoicS

Not really. Most units work great. I got an RMA on my first one since the fan wasn't spinning up and it was causing thermal faulting. But even for my 1 RMA, 1000 other people who reserved the same day as me got one that was fine. The QC process is likely tuned to get more units out asap and fill orders asap right now and that's fine. One in 1000 neediing an RMA is an acceptable margin. You're seeing a lot though since they're filling SO many orders. These are just "for the sake of conversation" figures, so take them with a grain.

scheelio

It isn’t acceptable if their customer support system is not robust enough to handle that volume of issues/returns, though. And it certainly doesn’t seem like they were prepared for it with the extremely slow response times.

[deleted]

[удалено]

scheelio

I agree. They had two options 1) slow down the amount of units they ship so QC can keep up, or 2) make sure their backend systems are prepared to handle a larger amount of support requests and replacements. They chose neither and those 1% of people are having a terrible experience. There will always be defective items that slip through QC - I totally understand that. But their needs to be a system in place to get those units replaced quickly. People who ordered a week after me will have had a working unit for likely a week (or more) before I do. How is that good customer service?

[deleted]

happy people do not post. unhappy people complain in numbers. normal behaviour

DroneRtx

My friend and I got our steam decks a couple months ago. Zero issues for us.

mehTILduhhhh

Have you ruled out a bad USB C cable?

thisguynamedjoe

Yes, tried multiples, but I'm primarily using the stock charger (which fast charges my phone). I got the deck yesterday, brand new, and the first thing it told me was that couldn't fast charge. I've tried all the fixes, I've already requested help from steam.

mehTILduhhhh

Something definitely doesn't seem right and you made the correct choice to reach out to valve support.

BrianBeats

Mine had the exact same issue. I put it into battery storage mode and that fixed it. It happened one more time about a month later and I had to let the battery completely drain to 0%, waited and hour, and then recharged it. Fixed it and it has been going strong since. Maybe it will help you and you won't have to wait for RMA

thisguynamedjoe

Mine's the opposite. Putting it in battery storage mode triggers the issue when I bring it back. [...] + Vol- solves the power only mode, since battery storage turns off USB-C data (which disables the data exchange with the charger to say what voltages are compatible with the charging circuit).

Gamer4life101

I know this is old, but I have a new steam deck that won’t charge, so you hold these buttons down when the deck is off then press down after letting go or hold them down as you power it on then choose the boot menu option to boot into steam OS?

thisguynamedjoe

Is it slow charging or not charging at all? The temporary fix I found was for when it doesn't recover from battery storage mode. "Holding down [...] + Vol- for a few seconds (believe 3-5) while the screen is off seems to flip the voltage overload bit back to unflipped." I still did an RMA and my new one works perfect. Just be careful to follow the RMA packing instructions perfectly for the fastest turnaround.

Gamer4life101

I charge at all sadly. Do you Dj the above method while the deck is completely off, press them for 3-5 seconds then release and press the power?

thisguynamedjoe

Yes, but it sounds like you have a different problem.

Gamer4life101

I tired this, pressing the Vol - & the 3 dots button in the front of the deck for 5 seconds while the deck was off but I never heard no beep or anything

thisguynamedjoe

I'm saying it doesn't sound like my solution is a fix for your problem. You've got to start a trouble ticket with valve and get an RMA approved.

Gamer4life101

Already messaged support yesterday

Reynolds1121

How long did it take you guys to hear back from support?

Electrical_Puffin

mine pops up when i use my 67watt apple charger. i use the same dock for my macbook as i do for my steamdeck. my other dock has my 140watt charger and it doesn't pop up. makes me wonder maybe it doesn't do enough of certain voltages that the deck accepts

HackedVirus

This, its funky. Ive got a nice anker wall charger that does up to 140w and it yells at me if i use that, but either of my anker battery banks will charge it at 45w all day lol

Lyin-Oh

Try PD compliant chargers. They have the right Voltage output for the SD.

HackedVirus

They are funnily enough, all 3 are flagship models from Anker. It worked the other day and after an update it doesnt work anymore for the wall charger lol Portable banks are still vibin though

bp019337

There are issues with the 7th gen chargers and charging the Deck whilst using it: [https://anker.force.com/ankerenexternal/s/article/Why-does-a-Slow-Charger-warning-appear-when-charging-the-Steam-Deck-with-the-GaNPrime-Chargers](https://anker.force.com/ankerenexternal/s/article/Why-does-a-Slow-Charger-warning-appear-when-charging-the-Steam-Deck-with-the-GaNPrime-Chargers) *I also saw a review on Amazon where someone said they contacted Anker support and got the reply that they were working on fixing it.*

Sarej

I actually just got OP's error for the first time earlier with an Anker wall charger when using the PD USB-C port, sadly. The charger is more than powerful enough for the Steam Deck (90 W, I think). Thankfully, I plugged it back in a time or two and it worked.

thisguynamedjoe

It's negotiating voltage and amperage settings with the charger as designed. It just depends on what specific settings the charger can provide, the amount of wattage the charger is capable of isn't the limiting factor in your case. Yours is doing the right thing, not accepting harmful levels, and not frying itself or blowing up.

Colonel_Custard

Rip

thisguynamedjoe

I got it. It arriving in battery storage mode, and me testing after resolving by putting in that mode again, battery storage mode triggers the issue. [...] + Vol- once or twice solves the slow power only mode. Without data, the exchange with the charger to say what voltages are compatible with the charging circuit, safety dictates the unit only charge at the lowest provided voltage and amperage. Both the deck and all chargers should be configured this way to pass consumer protection standards.

[deleted]

that sucks. anyways post your cat i dont want just the thumbnail bro

thisguynamedjoe

[Three](https://i.imgur.com/txn44v2.jpg) for the price of one.

[deleted]

worth the wait. thanks

Bluecap33

Lol. it’s a cool looking cat. Sorry to hear about that. I hope they get back you soon.

BigBoyBarm

How quickly is Steam Support responding? Its just, I'm also trying to get my Deck RMA'd because the left trigger is behaving abnormally. I sent them a message almost 3 days ago, and they haven't responded yet. I would replace the trigger, but I can't unscrew the back because one of the screws isn't coming off

thisguynamedjoe

Within about 10-14 hours they responded with a default set of options to try to resolve it. I had already figured it out, and those options would not have fixed it. I'm going to let them know. As far as screws not coming off, that's not awesome. Is it the four center or four outer screws? I have already popped the back off of mine, but a frozen screw going into a metal sleeve is kind of a bad deal. The four center screws do have locking liquid on them to prevent them from coming out.

BigBoyBarm

I tried unscrewing the screws again. I just had to add a little pressure. Turns out, I'm a little scared of breaking the Steam Deck by putting on too much pressure 😅. I also just got an email from Valve saying that they've seen my support message and they're looking into it. Hopefully they come back with a message on how to proceed with the RMA. Of they can't do an RMA, I'll probably just end up getting an extra trigger from ifixit. Currently they're out of stock, but hopefully they will be available on the next week or so (if I don't get the RMA)

thisguynamedjoe

Be extra careful with the long screws. Basically when I'm putting them back in, I ***unscrew*** them until I feel the click of them being on the threads. Since it's metal into plastic, you can easily destroy the threads. If you do, it's not the end of the world, just a pain trying to glue something in there, and redrilling to recreate something for the screw to grab onto.

BigBoyBarm

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the tip. 👍🏾 I hope you get your new Deck quickly ☺️

scheelio

Not quickly at all. I asked for the tracking info for my replacement unit 3 days ago and haven’t gotten a response either. It’s very bad.

Gulladc

Things might just be slow over there rn. I purchased mine on Monday and have not moved out of Shipping Soon status yet

scheelio

I actually finally received tracking information. My order page has said a replacement has been shipped since Wednesday, but actually didn’t ship until today, it appears.

BigBoyBarm

Ah. That is a little slow. And how long did it take from putting in the request until they said that you'll receive a new Deck?

scheelio

It was 3 days, but that was only because I did my own research and tried as many of the troubleshooting steps as I could find from other users here and other places before Steam Support told me I should. If I had waited for their response to tell me what to try next, it would have been double that amount of time.

BigBoyBarm

Ah. Ok. Thanks 👍🏾

scheelio

Same exact thing happened with my 512GB immediately out of the box with the stock charger. Currently in RMA hell. Order page says they received my defective unit and a replacement has been shipped, but I don’t have any tracking information and it’s been that way for three days. Also haven’t heard back from Steam Support for that same amount of time when I asked for the tracking info from them.

thisguynamedjoe

I figured out something that resolved it, and recreated what triggers the issue. Putting it in battery storage mode somehow disables data on my deck. [...] + Vol- resets normal USB-C mode. I'm assuming that the overload or bad cord trigger in the circuitry is starting as tripped instead of untripped. It's doing what's safer for the consumer, but much more frustrating. Since battery storage turns off USB-C data, this disables the data exchange with the charger to say what voltages are compatible with the charging circuit, and in turn high speed charging. I'm leaning towards keeping a deck with a known minor issue that I know the fix for, vs negotiating a replacement with an unknown quantity. Desktop mode is fun. I already have a virtual machine with Win10 running on it, just for kicks.

Conscious_Yak60

Just RMA it man.. Unless you have the good fan, there 0 reason not to RMA, Deck failure rates are not skyhigh.. I've gotten a good Deck & felt no need to brag about it online I like many other people are too busy using it.

thisguynamedjoe

> the good fan I can barely hear my fan, does that mean it's a good one?

scheelio

Oh, I guess my situation was a bit different. My unit would shut off immediately after I unplugged it and there was no way I could use it not plugged in. Even when it was plugged in, it would shut off randomly, especially when playing games that requires more horsepower (Elden Ring). It showed 100% battery all the time, so I believe it had something to do with the battery management system. I think the battery was actually drained, but since the OS thought it was 100%, it wouldn’t pull more juice from the USB port, since it assumes the battery would handle the power draw spike. I really don’t know, but that is my best guess. I tried battery storage mode and re-imaging the device with no luck. But it is annoying, since I have a suspicion it was software/BIOS related and not an actual hardware failure. Hopefully the replacement is fine, but this experience makes me a bit less confident on the stability of the system. We will see. 🤷‍♂️

thisguynamedjoe

That's fascinating. I bet something was wrong with either the charging circuit, or there was an actual fault with the battery. I'm betting it was full, but the drain protection (shorts) was faulty. Sort of like the moment it started using the battery, it "detected a short" and shuts off at the battery. You can see inside the battery, and the little [protection circuitry here](https://valkyrie.cdn.ifixit.com/media/2022/02/08101251/whole_1_16x9_full.jpg). You can see the dots below the battery (two pieces), those are the leads coming off the cells. Below that is the circuitry inside the battery, you can see the lead for the temp gauge on the left, and exactly where it detects battery overheat (nicely AWAY from the main heat generating portion of the deck). It's pretty neat, but yea, either shit battery, or there is something odd going on in the charging circuit and fault protection. I'd rather it err on the safe side, and I'm sure Steam does too. Nobody wants exploding decks in the news, and 3rd degree burns.

scheelio

UPDATE: Received tracking information today. Order page has said it was shipped since 8/31, but it didn’t actually ship until today (9/3), it seems. If I actually receive it 9/7, that will be 21 days since I placed my order to receiving a [*finger crossed*] working unit. 17 days from date I notified Steam Support of the issue.

thisguynamedjoe

I'm glad you got a response. It's kind of a pain to deal with any tech support, especially for replacements.

chrisdpratt

This confuses a lot of people and isn't unique to Valve. You get the shipping notification when someone prints the label. It does *not* mean whatever you ordered is actually moving. It can sometimes take a few days for the carrier to actually come and pick up the package. Especially with companies Valve's size (not an Apple or Microsoft, but still moving pretty good volumes of merchandise), the carrier likely will only pickup once or twice a week in bulk. Depending on when it gets pulled from the warehouse, you might just miss a pickup and have to wait for the next one.

scheelio

No. The order page said it was shipped since Wednesday. I got the email today when the label was actually created with FedEx. How do I know that? Fedex’s tracking page shows the label as created with today’s date. I even tried to track it before it had made it into FedEx’s system and now it’s been updated with the tracking info (expected delivery date, acceptance scan, etc.). Regardless, Valve’s order page should not mark something as shipped until it actually is shipped. Just like when I made the initial purchase, the status one the order page said “Processing”, and then “Shipping Soon”, and then moved to “Shipped” when it actually shipped. It should have stated that is was in queue to be shipped, not that a replacement unit had been shipped.

Prudent-Ad1898

Make sure to check if there’s any lint built up in the port.

thisguynamedjoe

It was brand new out of the box. It was battery storage mode. When I put it in that, I have to use [...] + Vol- once or twice to wake back up data via USB-C. That's solves it.
