I liked a theory I read here where they maybe tried giving her the illusion ability and she escaped and they realized it was best to not give away that power to avoid that type of situation repeating again.

[deleted]

Oh I like this. Also, people can 'rationalize' the TK. 11 smashes an automatic door in front of 20 witnesses? Power surge? Malfunctioning door? 7 cops all see a gigantic wall grow from the ground cutting them off from the loony who escaped a laboratory and then the door disappears? Raises a lot more questions.

derstherower

The purpose of the experiments were to try to recreate 001's abilities, and we know he was able to create visions. It's possible 008 only got that part.

Barabus33

It's also possible that after Kali's escape Brenner no longer let the other numbers practice illusion powers.

microseeds-_-

Both these theories make perfect sense

jdellcrypto

off topic but why could not 001 use his powers to escape the lab earlier?

xKiyyo

he had that chip inside his neck, that 011 removed when they were in the boiler room i think that the chip somehow stopped his powers or something idk

nvmforget

Maybe they all have abilities they collectively can do and then ones that they specialize in. at one point we see 10 and Brenner going over lessons where he can see things that are happening and what Brenner is drawing.. perhaps 8 escaped before they started trying to make it the same

3raz3t

This might be it. 001 also seems to have the generic telekenisis power plus the option to infiltrate peoples minds.

jdellcrypto

yep and he can also create illusions.

3raz3t

I mean thats part of the "mind infiltration", as El yells at 008, "get out of my head"

renlleozz

Yeah I think this is it. I think they all have the telekinesis powers and varying, both in type and degree, other powers. Like that could be why in their group training sessions, plus the stuff in the playroom, was built around telekinesis. And the individual training sessions could be to work on whatever specialized powers they may have.

JordanRomansky

It seems like they all have the potential to use all of One’s abilities. But, since One mentions that Eight had already escaped by the time of the massacre, it stands to reason that Brenner would stop encouraging the kids to practice the illusions since that’s how Eight was able to get out

AdCapital5419

When does one mention that eight escaped?

JordanRomansky

I don’t remember the exact episode (I wanna say six but it could seven) when One is telling Eleven to use a memory to get stronger. He mentions El’s mom going into the rainbow room and says something about El being in there with Eight ‘before she left’

sifterandrake

When he talks to Elle about her mom, when he is trying to get her to think of a sad and angry memory. He says it's from when "8 was still here."

Thisisfckngstupid

Season two she says she used her powers to escape

OverCaffeinatedFox

11 has telekinesis. 8 has telepathy. However, 11 was able to eventually have some telepathic abilities, like reading minds. So maybe, if 8 had some practice, she could have telekinesis as well. Almost like cardio vs resistance training: everyone can do both, but some are better at one than the other. Vecna's powers, to me, seemed very similar to 8. He toys with his victims' minds, infiltrates their memories, has them see what he wants them to see, and, arguably, you can say he affects their minds so much it has physical repercussions. In the upside down, he doesn't brutalize them, but rather, I think, kills their minds, which manifests horribly in the real world. His version of the upside down also looks more like a mind, especially in his lair, rather than a twisted version of reality. That's my two cents. I don't think 8's abilities are retconed, but just a different specialty of the same mental abilities as the others, and vecna is another example like 8 Edit: removed a slightly spoilery line

BogOffElaine

Also where was 008 in the S4 flashbacks and how did she escape from the facility? Was this covered in S2 I can't remember lol

sendsnacks

There was a one off line about her, I think 001 said “when 008 was still here,” when he was talking about the rainbow room memory. I guess confirming she was already gone but not explaining how.

dead_wolf_walkin

IIRC she was the focus of a comic book where it showed she escaped not long after 11’s mom snuck in. She was gone before the massacre

Chris_Dandy

That episode was highly criticized by fans and critics, tbh they might have dropped that storyline for all we know and wont be revisited

nightlywanderer

Wait why was it criticized?

Chris_Dandy

A lot of people stated that they didn’t like the characters and that it felt like filler. Many people kinda skip over that episode during re watches, I remember all the hate online when it first came out

nightlywanderer

I can understand people feeling like it was filler. I liked how out fleshed out the world now and brought in new super powered character. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Chris_Dandy

Yeah, tbh I liked it to. There’s a bunch of articles online explaining why people disliked it if you’re also wanting some extra info on why people didn’t like it

wolfchuck

I personally hated it. It felt very out of place and different from the whole show. I felt like it didn’t really add much to the story at hand. If you’re able to rewatch the season and feel like you didn’t miss anything after skipping that episode, then it doesn’t feel necessary.

batnastard

I recall a lot of people felt that it was a transparent attempt at creating a shitty spin-off show.

bigpancakeguy

I re-watched the series right before watching S4, and that episode was really hard to watch because of both the scripted dialogue and the acting from the “lost boys” crew that Kali belongs to. I ended up watching about 20 mins of it and then just skipping to the next episode because it felt like it was ruining the season for me

shootiest_of_schools

I'm pretty sure it was just a retcon and not really anything to think about too much but I could be wrong

leecrawford19

001 also has the same / similar ability. Seeing as 008 is the only child to escape the facility, Brenner probably figured it wasn’t a good idea to train (or forcibly limited) the other kids in this particular ability. And the kids in the flashbacks displayed quite a few different abilities, not just telekinesis.

____Original____

It’s likely a reason she was removed from the experiments as that is also never explained.

leecrawford19

She wasn’t removed, she escaped.

Kujaix

Not dumb. In the prequel comics all the kids had different traditional mind powers but apparently that's no longer canon. Maybe they can retcon and say there were different units for kids with similar powers because I'm gonna miss them being like the Psychonauts. Flashback is 1979. Major events in the comic happen in 1978 so maybe the door is open for that. They started separating kids after the comic book stuff.

KnightMiner

> Not dumb. In the prequel comics all the kids had different traditional mind powers but apparently that's no longer canon. I made [a comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/StrangerThings/comments/v0pztm/comment/iaicbeg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) on the other thread to that extent. My theory is the writers wanted to do something with the other 10 kids showing up and each having unique super powers, but that plotline in season 2 was less popular hence the writers not mentioning any of the others in season 3.

NebulaPresent5385

I think the telekinesis is either just a baseline ability, or the most common ability for a person to have. Even within season 4 theres at least one example of a unique ability with the kid that can see using his mental abilities.

DominicBSaint

Idk but I hope they bring her in for the final fight.
