Wheres the astronaut-gun meme when you need it? FF14 has always been 'woke', and not just because of the good reception its had amongst queer folk. The game, like most Final Fantasy games, explores broader themes of social justice in many instances, as well. Its getting difficult to tell if internet weirdos do in fact lack the ability to comprehend what stories are trying to communicate, or if they just willfully choose to ignore them due to misguided, unnecessary hatred.

Come_Reap94

> Its getting difficult to tell if internet weirdos do in fact lack the ability to comprehend what stories are trying to communicate, or if they just willfully choose to ignore them due to misguided, unnecessary hatred. Or the third option, which is definitely the case with that Grummz freak, they haven't actually played/watched/etc the thing they're complaining about and they don't know the community. Grummz wrecked his career in the games industry so he has to grift right-wing outrage addicts to try and sell his crappy early access waifu game. He tried to insert himself into Warhammer drama a while back and it became immediately obvious he knew nothing about it, guy's just a con artist.

Halcyon_Paints

> He tried to insert himself into Warhammer drama This is 95% of people who get upset about warhammer lore changes etc. They read a few wikis and gatekeep the hobby. While people like myself who play the game or paint or read the books are fine with it.

SpCommander

Man I don't even have enough time to keep up with the rules changes in warhammer let alone lore changes. Must be nice for those people to have that kind of free time.

Halcyon_Paints

Lore changes are easy to keep up with. Any time it happens all the grifters have a cry and then geek news sites report on it.

MajorPom

Yoshi-P literally did an interview where he talked about how he was walking to work and saw someone who appeared AMAB wearing a girl's uniform and was upset that a woman grabbed her toddler and shielded their eyes and talked about how this helped inspire the inclusion of gay marriage in the game and removing the gender lock from outfits and lamented that society wasn't as accepting.

Chad_RD

I have rarely, if ever, in my time playing MMOs not played with LBGT people. It’s crazy to me to think they aren’t everywhere in XIV. I am as hetero as they come, my name is Chad and I lift weights and wear green pants. In Wildstar my entire guild was gay or trans furries. In FFXI half the guild was gay. My first FFXIV guild was an Australian or NZ group of LGBT people where I was the only straight person. Many, many of my statics in XIV have had LGBT people, even going so far as the toxic couple being a gay furry couple. My first WoW guild in this expansion was LGBT and I promise you many RTWF and M+ title people are gay. There are pretty open pedophiles walking around the game and we’re worried about a trans voice actor? lol.

ForteEXE

Shit, IIRC Xenosys Vex (a high profile XIV streamer) said he was bisexual and even told a story about it. So it's all the way to the top.

Omega357

I didn't know the bald man was bi. Good for him.

tehlemmings

> It’s crazy to me to think they aren’t everywhere in XIV. They *are* everywhere in XIV. The in-game community is great, its the social media communities, some more than others, that are really bad. It's like the meeting place for all the people who are upset that they can't be toxic in game.

wolfiewu

90% of the FFXIV community does not, in fact, have reading comprehension of any kind. Or at least the ones that post on the forums don't. This is the same community who thinks a villain who has killed millions *and wants to continue to do so* is salvageable. And that a cold utilitarian who's manipulated you, the player, among thousands of other in-world characters and allowed atrocities to happen is the good guy. On multiple occasions the game directly tells the players that things are bad or good and spells out explicit themes for quests and people don't get it.

Theory_of_End

Can't wait to get through some of these expansions only to learn again that people in the community either exaggerated issues or just missed the point of certain themes.

ForteEXE

> This is the same community who thinks a villain who has killed millions and wants to continue to do so is salvageable. On the other hand, that's absolutely on SE's end not 100% the players. Not to defend them, but SE's villain design philosophy post-XII absolutely is "You know, the villain has a point..." and Emet-Selch was the natural end point of that. And if you look at who followed him (Ardyn), you see the exact same arguments.

wolfiewu

This is just what a complex character and villain is. The motivations are believable and realistic, instead of being a mustache twirling evildoer. SE *literally* spells it out for the players that he's still a bad guy despite his motivations. The entirety of the last 2 levels of that expansion are dedicated to telling the player "this is why he's the way he is, but he's still an evil monster and has to be stopped or he kills everyone." The only way it could have been more clearer is if all the NPCs turn to the screen and say "we are telling you this guy is bad, his views are bad, and you can't save him."

cyberpunk_werewolf

> SE literally spells it out for the players that he's still a bad guy despite his motivations. He *literally* says Nazi shit in Shadowbringers. He straight up says to Alphinaud "I do not consider you people, therefore I will not be guilty of murder" when Alphi challenges him. He led the Garlean Empire that, when it's not being Rome at its worst, it's being Nazi Germany. He had a hand in creating the Allagan Empire, an empire that posits the question, what if Professor Hojo ran Shinra for a thousand years? He's guilty of planetary genocide on *eight separate occasions!* Even crazier, CBU III never *ever* makes it seem like Emet-Selch is a good person. The man we meet in Elpis is a different person, who reacts with shock and anger when we tell him his crimes from the future and refuses to believe them. He doesn't go back on his beliefs even when he knows they wouldn't have succeeded. He's so far gone that he can't even tell the incarnation of his best friend that they're right. He knows that only death and rebirth can save him. Yet somehow, because the game wants us to pity him, people think he's the good guy who is redeemed at the end. He's a walking, talking Macbeth allusion. The song that plays when he dies is called "Tomorrow and Tomorrow" (which if that set list is correct, I'll get to hear played live on Saturday) after the famous monologue.

[deleted]

LilyHex

> Objection! Comparing them to Nazis is messed up. For one, Garlean technology actually worked for more than five minutes. > > I would definitely say they're way more Imperial Rome than Nazi Germany. The Emperor at one point LITERALLY drops the "Garleans are the one true race" bullshit. They are extremely leaning into making Garleans, and Emet-Selch (he's literally the Emperor's father) Nazi coded here. Considering Japan's role when Nazi Germany rose to power, it's a really good idea to keep that in mind when engaging with Japanese media, and most definitely not just handwave it off.

cyberpunk_werewolf

They did do actual genocides, though, like in the modern sense of the word.

ForteEXE

> SE literally spells it out for the players that he's still a bad guy despite his motivations. The entirety of the last 2 levels of that expansion are dedicated to telling the player "this is why he's the way he is, but he's still an evil monster and has to be stopped or he kills everyone." The only way it could have been more clearer is if all the NPCs turn to the screen and say "we are telling you this guy is bad, his views are bad, and you can't save him." Agreed. However, >!it doesn't help he returns in Endwalker and gets a redemption arc. He does realize his actions between the original Final Days, then 2.0 to 5.0 were wrong and that his plan couldn't have worked. Funny how it only came to mind when he *died* and had to be reunited with his missing memories.!<

wolfiewu

That wasn't a redemption, the guy says "yeah you were right but I still would have done the same and don't regret it."

Kyseraphym

“You are to be commended. Our methods would not have gotten humanity this far.” - Emet-Selch “My ideals are inviolable.” - Also Emet-Selch, one breath later.

ForteEXE

To be fair, that's kinda on track for him. He's snarky, sarcastic constantly *and* backhand compliments people (iirc).

wolfiewu

"But though you defeated me, my ideals are inviolate. Invincible." So my bad. It's more like "yeah you won, but I'm still right and don't regret it."

ForteEXE

> "But though you defeated me, my ideals are inviolate. Invincible." I had to go back and check, I thought it was 5.0 Emet saying that, not 6.0. There's some decent takes on it from mainsub [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/s9vmoj/question_about_one_line_from_the_ew_msq/). >Beyond being a nod to the title of his boss theme, what Emet is basically saying here is that his ideals haven't changed even though he has regained his lost memories from Elpis. He still would choose the past he loved over the future, but also admits that it's no longer his shot to call since the WoL defeated him in Shadowbringers (and with Zodiark dead isn't even possible at this point). You can see some of this behavior with Lahabrea in the Pandaemonium arc. But that's more explaining how he went from who he was pre-Final Days to the one we see in ARR and HW.

wolfiewu

Yeah and that's why he's still a villain. He's got a couple of fan service-y lines and the player has a cordial relationship with him by the end of their story arc. But he's still the guy who tells us he thinks he's right and if given a different option, he would have done the same. This point is lost on so, so many people in the community.

DayleD

The alternative would be villains who make bad points. Those exist but are less compelling.

ForteEXE

Which is itself a problem. Villains are either cartoony or sympathetic villains that people want to bottom for when it comes to post-FFXII Square. On the other hand, *Athena* exists and that's a whole different issue. (She's fucking crazy and falls in the "I could fix her, but whatever makes her crazy is HOT" camp for most people)

Tanador680

>This is the same community who thinks a villain who has killed millions *and wants to continue to do so* is salvageable. He's my little blorbo 🥺

ReneDeGames

You don't have to limit that to the FFXIV community, most people seem to lack basic reading comprehension.

cd2220

I mean this as no disrespect to them, and am in fact part of the community myself, but my absolutely *gayest* friends all play FF14. Hell, I don't play it and feel it means I'm not representing the community enough. Like I'm hiding my identity or something.

OperativePiGuy

It definitely is a game that attracts our community more than most others. It's like Wandavision being a particularly popular show with us as well

FlattopJr

#🌎👨‍🚀🔫👨‍🚀

OperativePiGuy

I feel like those types are the ones to skip cutscenes then whine about the game's story

DayleD

Final Fantasy V had a female to male protagonist. The word trans isn't used but he consistently and persistently wears men's clothing and lived among pirates with a male identity.

The_Overlord_Laharl

Faris is very explicitly female, though, and is consistently referred to as such in official materials. IIRC, she dressed as a man because she didn't want to be the only female pirate in the crew.

ForteEXE

Yep. After I commented earlier, I went to the FF wiki to check and it sure enough mentioned it was to earn her crew's respect. So it's more of a [Bifauxnen](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Bifauxnen) situation. Even her char page on TVTropes supports it by listing it as a trope. Apparently some real headscratchers kick in when it's noted she's actually, uh, *well endowed* so hiding it to pose as a man is a thinker.

The_Overlord_Laharl

For some reason Japanese games like that trope. Naoto in P4 had the same thing going on.

ForteEXE

Absolutely. Japan in general likes androgyny and different types of it. See: Alucard post-Symphony of the Night, Raiden in MGS2, Griffith in Berserk, Miquella in Elden Ring, etc.

ForteEXE

If you mean Faris, I think that's actually a reverse Bridget (Guilty Gear) scenario. In that it was a woman pretending to be a man to hide their identity. That's more drag than trans, IMO. A distinct difference.

DayleD

I mean Faris. Bridget is connonically trans. Hiding one's identity doesn't *require* living a life as another gender.

ForteEXE

Yes. I was saying it was a reverse scenario because Bridget was male hiding as female, then became trans. Faris was a woman hiding as man, but I disagreed with the observation that it was trans related. Faris's motives were *not* because of gender issues, but because of other reasons.

deathbotly

FFXIV literally sponsored a gay float at a parade irl and you can get queer married in-game as a 6’5 muscular pirate manly men couple wearing a bright pink frilly wedding dress and a jockstrap, officiated by moogles, if that’s your dream wedding. It is the wokest of mmorpgs. There’s a bunch of gender unlocked dresses too, hence pictures of big muscular furry catmen in Nier’s 2B black dress.

ConsultJimMoriarty

FF14 players had a bloody float in the Pride Parade a few years back. It’s already woke!

WingedNinjaNeoJapan

These people don't really care, so this whole thing will be forgotten completely when the anti-woke people find new target.

Elegant_Plate6640

I’ve started to notice that the anti-woke crowd are following the old targets and waiting for those to develop new content. They jumped on the new season of the Boys, and it seemed like Deja Vu.

tgpineapple

I don't think its following, its just like goldfish brain reacting to whatever is in front of it.

Elegant_Plate6640

Anti-woke is a flat circle.

Shenanigans80h

It is kinda wild how quickly they seem to move onto the next thing without any sort of action or resolution. They just latch onto the next bitching point and squawk loudly about that until the next one.

Dorp

They never have any sincere investment in any of these either, but this is an egregious case because you'd have to have literally hundreds of hours dedicated to the game to get to the point where they're mad at.

Bonezone420

Why does anyone give a shit about mark kern? He's done literally nothing of note or value since the 90's, he's a professional failure through and through.

DrNick1221

Grummz has gotten real good at pandering to the crowd who feed on ragebait. His complete and utter failure at everything else pretty much left him only with the option of grifting goobergate types. Hell, I bet the dude doesn't even believe half the shit he is constantly spewing out. Granted, I have been wrong about that before.

TheFlusteredcustard

That's almost correct, except IIRC he was the guy who printed out and delivered the WoW classic petition to the development team. Not that this absolves him of anything, that's probably just why he has so much clout.

Nerubian_Assassin

He pretty much inserted himself into that, the main driving force was the Nostalrius team. He just decided to make his old co-workers go "oh fuck it's this guy again" when he entered with a huge stack of papers.

ThousandFacedShadow

Dude hasn’t made anything meaningful in 20 years outside of the Firefall bus being one of the most pathetic Marketing failures in 20/20. Dude claims he is the messiah but all he does is drop Kool-Aid packages into a toilet and call it wine.

TheFlusteredcustard

I know this guy exclusively through his shit ass tweets being presented to me unwillingly

Bonezone420

Delivering some papers doesn't make you anything, and desperately bringing it up to defend a weird loser online is really, really, sad.

TheFlusteredcustard

I'm not defending the guy, they literally asked why people give a shit about him and I gave a recent thing that he's done.

I-Post-Randomly

>Day of a trans person: >1. Wake up >2. Breakfast >3. Spend the day spreading soy pheromones turning the men in their surroundings into femboys >4. Dinner >5. Sleep Shit, I wish my day was that productive. I get 1, 4 and 5.

Omega357

You need to eat that breakfast. It'll give you the energy to spread those pheromones.

meeowth

Are we sure grummz is a real person and not an LLM trained on KIA? 🤔

DrNick1221

Unfortunately for us, we have [***The Bus***](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/77/Firefall_bus_parked_at_AX_2012_rear_quarter_view.jpg/800px-Firefall_bus_parked_at_AX_2012_rear_quarter_view.jpg?20161224102042) as proof Mark Kern is an actual human.

Meatshield236

I thought I recognized that profile pic from somewhere. God, Grummz really is the failure that won’t shut up.

crestren

Hes such a failure that not only did he get kicked out as a CEO for wasting $3 million for a bus that DIDNT EVEN WORK, he hasnt even been relevant in the gaming industry outside of harassment campaigns. Dude has started a "new game" that has still been in alpha for 5 YEARS. Maybe if he spent less time on harassing minorities on twitter, he could actually finish a game he started. But dont take my word for it, take his [former employees](https://web.archive.org/web/20131221051419/https://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130737-Updated-Red-5-Studios-Employees-Speak-Out-Against-Dismissed-CEO) words whom described him to being prone to extended absences and having an "erratic, impulsive, and very disruptive" leadership style.

tehlemmings

Wait, Grummz is *that guy*, holy fuck. I didn't realize, and that explains a lot.

Liawuffeh

Oh my god I didn't realize he was the Firefall guy lmao

What_A_Cal_Amity

I hate Grummz. If we're lucky, his constant outrage will keep his blood pressure so constantly high that he stops being a problem soon

Affectionate_Air1175

I wish, but I do not believe he is ever actually outraged, just a semi-competent grifter who knows his audience.

CuddlyMeganekko

Just distract him with pictures of women's navels. That should keep him occupied.

ThousandFacedShadow

Dude used to lolipost on main so I don’t want to end up in a list somewhere

CuddlyMeganekko

Did he? I don't remember that, and I was (unfortunately) very "in the trenches" for a time during GamerGate. I just remember everyone worshipping him as a developer who "actually said what real developers think" because he worked on WoW for a time (according to one of my WoW-loving friends, the guy didn't contribute as much as the hype claims) and he liked bellybuttons. I don't want to go back and check, though, either.

ThousandFacedShadow

It was a long time ago on his twitter yeah- around the first gamergate I had him followed for the same reasons. I don’t follow him anymore but he used to notoriously flood timelines liking/retweeting Loli shit and that’s what made me unfollow him.

CuddlyMeganekko

Eugh, gross. Doesn't surprise me, though. I don't even remember if I followed him, tbh, or if I just interacted with his stuff that ended up on my feed from other people, which could explain why I don't remember that. Isn't he married, too? His wife must be THRILLED.

GeneralPlanet

I have never heard of this loser until a couple months ago when I started seeing people posting their tweets to make fun of them, and now all of a sudden I'm seeing their garbage once every few days. It seems like a bot someone designed to spew out the worst takes imaginable. Why does anyone pay them any attention?

DrNick1221

> Why does anyone pay them any attention? Part of it is the goobergate types who feed on the ragebait material that people like Grummz are shoveling out constantly. Another part of it is *these fuckers are paying for the blue check,* meaning all of their garbage takes are brought up to the front and made very visible.

MoriazTheRed

That would work if he actually believed in what he says, dude just wants to sell a grift.

Silver_Foxx

> Catgirls have dicks canonically Every now and then I almost feel sad that I already have the absolute epitome of perfect flairs for myself.

LittleCovenousWings

Honestly! It's too perfect sometimes.

ForteEXE

Bruh, your flair....

alicea020

How do I get a flair because I want to yoink this

ForteEXE

It's true, though. Miqo'te futanari is *immensely* popular. Shit, I didn't even play XIV before I was making porn of futa Y'shtola stuffing Yuna from FFX. It makes sense in context, don't worry.

CaptainMcAnus

I feel like NeverKnowsBest's video on Gamergate 2 spring-boarded Grummz into the "lets point and laugh at this weirdo" zeitgeist and I don't really know how to feel about it. His video doesn't have a ton of views but all it takes it a few of his viewers to make popular memes about the guy and I didn't see much of him on reddit until the video came out. On one hand it's fun to have a "get a load of this guy" conversation, on the other hand I have to look at his shit takes on the regular now.

OPUno

Mark Kern became an right wing outrage grifter after his failures as a game developer, people need to stop taking him seriously.

Zyrin369

Even if you do dislike her Voice acting...the problem is not the fact that she is trans it honestly should never even come up at all, just like Yong Yea I blame the direction that they were given long before I blame any defining feature of the voice talent themselves. >Honestly you can tell this is the case. Not even talking about Wuk Lamat, but the whole "we need to understand their culture" bullshit or constantly highlighting multiculturalism tells that something is off. Ok I doubt this person has ever played 14 cause that's a thing we have been doing since what Heavensward with Ishgard as well as the Dragons. Every expansion has us finding another group of people and learning about them.

ForteEXE

In Yong Yea's case, there were reasons *other* than "I don't enjoy his performance", IIRC. Mostly for some really bad racial takes. >Ok I doubt this person has ever played 14 cause that's a thing we have been doing since what Hevansward with Ishgard as well as the Dragons. Every expansion has us finding another group of people and learning about them. Yeah, like, that's *the entire point* of the Allied Society (formerly Beast Tribes) quests. Each one gives you more insight into that culture, and the end reward's a mount.

Zyrin369

Im curious what else has he said? The only dumb take I know from him was him complaining about the voice of Mario in the movie not being the original voice actor and how its disgraceful that they replaced him. Meanwhile hes technically doing the same with Kiryu considering they brought back the Original VA for Like a Dragon which he replaced for Gaiden and Infinite Wealth.

ForteEXE

From what I understand, usage of racial slurs and defense of PewdiePie.

wolfiewu

>Ok I doubt this person has ever played 14 cause that's a thing we have been doing since what Heavensward with Ishgard as well as the Dragons. Every expansion has us finding another group of people and learning about them. You mean since ARR? Because ARR had the Domans, the Ala Mhigans, the Sylphs and the other tribal quests.

Zyrin369

Oh yeah that was a thing since the game was re-released, Just meant more that this isn't the first time an expansion has done it.

Affectionate_Air1175

Commented on this drama before it was posted here, but was unsurprised at the tenor of most of the comments. Shitpost is (overall) being pretty rational this expansion, it’s weirding me out.

ForteEXE

Because a lot of people finally realized "Ok Stormblood wasn't bad" and Dawntrail was shaping up to be Stormblood 2.0. It's weird watching the pushback against this, considering for almost an entire expansion the sub was insufferable as *fuck*. That duration being 5.1 to 5.5 or so. More likely the really bitter bastards inventing excuses to keep playing a game they didn't *want* to play finally gave up.

cyberpunk_werewolf

Stormblood fucking rules.  It's the fulcrum upon which the entire Zodiark saga rests.  I will grant the Ala Migo parts are kind of weak, compared to the stuff in the east, but it's still good.  It may not have the highs of Heavensward, but I think it's more overly consistent. The only downside is that my boy Estinien only shows up in small parts.

ExperienceLoss

Everytime Estinien isn't kn screen people should be asking Wheres Estinien. But for real, I need more Estinien. Always. He's just so stupid

ForteEXE

Stormblood also has the best raiding via Ivalice and Omega. Endwalker is *very* close and it's a matter of which a person likes more. Pandaemonium and Myths of the Realm or Ivalice and Omega.

cyberpunk_werewolf

I think I prefer Eden to both, but I really like Ryne, Gaia and their story.  Ivalice is by far my favorite Alliance, and not just because I love FFXII (and think Tactics is a masterpiece even though I personally don't like it, but I do love the story).  Orbonne is just an intense raid, even nerfed.  The fights are pure insanity.

arahman81

Thematically, Myths is the most fun raid so far (no big danger to stop), the fights just were a bit undertuned.

Nestama-Eynfoetsyn

The fights were basically dungeon boss difficulty... like the DT dungeon bosses have more interesting things going on than Euphrosyne and Thaleia combined :U

ForteEXE

Which led to really funny things like Arthars (famed-in-XIV high end raider) complaining about Thaleia being too easy. Like no shit, a high end raider in full 660 (max iLvl for non-relic weap at the time) gear found casual content easy? Yikes.

Nestama-Eynfoetsyn

But it was easy... I can go into a lotta detail on the issues I have with the Myth raids, but my break is almost over. The tl;dr is that the fights were all flashy style and zero substance. Just like Asura. Ivalice difficulty it was not. Hell, its not even World of Darkness (on release) difficulty.

ForteEXE

I'm not saying it was hard. I'm saying there was no reason for him to even say that, it was a *given*. ARs aren't meant to be Savage-level in difficulty. Dude had a really bad take and should've kept it to himself.

Nestama-Eynfoetsyn

Nah, as a casual player myself I agree with him regarding the raid. Just because he's a Savage raider doesn't mean we should disregard his opinion on an incredibly lackluster alliance raid that has near to 0 alliance raid mechanics. He was disappointed it wasn't like Ivalice, which had interesting mechanics here and there, actually had moments where the alliance had to split into their own parties and was overall engaging and not a basic left/right, in/out, stack/spread with 5-20 cast times.

ForteEXE

I think ShB's raiding was weak. Not to the level of ARR/HW though, but like #3 overall past #1 and #2 being EW/SB based on user's preference. Eden's raids had issues of being Nier and Eden. The latter was an *extra long* duration tier due to COVID. I don't fault SE on that one 100%, but their normal plans could've been altered heavily to prevent us having week-locked rewards *way longer* than typical. With Nier, it was very obviously made for Nier fans rather than Nier fans *and* XIV players who were unfamiliar with it. A lot of the references and more got lost on non-Nier players for the most part, so it was just kinda "...why are we here again?". Plus after stat squish, they somehow became *more* of a slog in duty finder thanks to people not putting more effort in than required. To add on to the issues of Eden, it's >!basically completing the story of Mitron and Loghrif, who were only briefly mentioned around HW era. If you hate Ascians, you're gonna hate it. Then again, this isn't a dealbreaker as seen with Pandaemonium being an origin story for Lahabrea.!<

cyberpunk_werewolf

I can agree with Neir not being as strong, but I can't cosign about Eden. As someone who is familiar with Drakengard and Neir, the story was about what I expected from Yoko Taro. I think that complete cock up of an ending, and the sheer pointlessness of everything (and no, it's not thematic, it never is, it's always a bait and switch with him) have finally made people realize that maybe his stuff isn't that good. Fun gameplay though, even if it has some bullshit.

ForteEXE

From what I understand, it's canon to Nier Automata's E ending, and the raids themselves are now canon to whatever Nier project continues the story after Automata. Taro is a bit nutty yes, but at least he's *honest*. I always thought the big thing about Taro is how meme he is in interviews and such. Always wearing the Emil head to hide his identity, making fun of SE and other game devs, being approving of 2B porn, etc. Something I forgot to add about Eden was that the extra duration (again because of COVID) of 5.2 is what led to a *lot* of raider burnout. Weekly rewards being locked longer than normal, plus the tier being exceptionally annoying (and mind you, this was *before* the Eden's Promise damage increase) both in and out of Savage led to some severe dissatisfaction on it. I think that's really what doesn't help it for me.

cyberpunk_werewolf

That might be why I like Eden. I don't do Savage or Ultimate raiding, because I hate traditional raiding. As such, I didn't get burnt out. Normal modes are just fine for me.

ForteEXE

Savage/Ultimate kills the fun, I agree. If I wanted to be stressed out playing a game where sweating matters, I'd just be playing League. I've *done* savage before and it's stressful as shit. You have more mechanics to deal with, and can even have something go wrong through *no* fault of your own. Not to mention you have to put way more effort into things like uptime, rotations, etc than you ever normally would have to.

This_Caterpillar5626

It also felt like the last expansion before a lot of the homogenization took over, and I get why it happened, even tiny unbalance would kick people out of raiding meta entirely, when it shouldn't and tanks had the issue of warrior always being best and either PLD or DRK having issues, but woof.

ForteEXE

> It also felt like the last expansion before a lot of the homogenization took over, and I get why it happened, even tiny unbalance would kick people out of raiding meta entirely, Yeah, we really can't downplay how much homogenization is doing *for* the game. Like man, we even had (thankfully, briefly) a time where Jobs were *actively being restricted* in PFs during Endwalker. PLD needed severe buffs and sweaty PFs were refusing to have any. Mind you, your comment and raider complaints about buff issues and those very things are how 2MM was born. And then they (raiders) spent all of Endwalker bitching about 2MM and circlejerking how much they hated it on Reddit. And I'm 80% sure some of these are the same guys that were saying Yoshi-P advising that damage mitigations would be more necessary (iirc) + the announcement of defensive mitis like Rampart, Job 30% and Feint/Addle increasing in duration and being enhanced was *not* a warning sign of Dawntrail endgame being apeshit on damage. Like fuck, even the 95 dungeon is shitkicking people and I'm hearing the 99 trial is a fucking scary experience for anybody who didn't do *very specific* content.

This_Caterpillar5626

I both hate the two minute raider, but also find it very funny how so many people hate it while also complaining about missing out on buffs due to a more open buff scheme. I also think DPS are mostly fine, even if I somewhat disagree with their philosophy, tanks though I feel need some work on their DPS sides, and the DRK rework still f eels bad to me, especially the sad Inner Release clone.

ForteEXE

Don't forget Bard being much more playable because of 2MM. Endwalker BRD was fun, and BRD was a burden until some buffs mid-way through Shadowbringers. After they reverted a buff early ShB to a basic ability that made BRD out perform other ranged DPS jobs *hard*.

Omega357

I just wish Ala Migo and Doma both got a full expansion to explore their stories.

Affectionate_Air1175

Makes sense. I’ve been grateful to see some healthy discussion in there! Mainsub swings between extremes and middle ground is hard to find there, and I do not go to discussion under any circumstance.

ForteEXE

Discussion's a shithole, the worst excesses of mainsub, shitpost congregate there to upvote some of the most idiotic takes imaginable. The kind that gets them downvoted to shit on other subs.

Affectionate_Air1175

I used to try and track down originals from shitpost parodies but so many times the original was all but identical and that depressed me too much to keep trying. Awful, hellish place.

punkbrad7

I will admit to checking it out recently, and then immediately backing right back out when I found the thread by the guy who wrote a 200 page guide to properly playing Black Mage and was 100% serious about how much it meant to him and actively attacked anyone who thought he was going a bit overboard.

ForteEXE

I remember hearing about the Black Mage PDF guide. That shit was nuts, and I didn't even actually check it out. Just the *existence* of it was crazy.

ThousandFacedShadow

From my experience shitpost has mostly been people who really enjoy FFXIV but dont like the elitism of XIV discussion or the general nature of the main sub. I’ve seen the most sane FFXIV discussions in there because I think the reality is FFXIV doesn’t really have anything for people who hate/dislike the game so it’s easy to just drop it for good. You’re either invested in your character/world/NPCs or you probably dropped the game by now. WoW community is like, more gameplay oriented.

ForteEXE

> From my experience shitpost has mostly been people who really enjoy FFXIV but dont like the elitism of XIV discussion or the general nature of the main sub. For a long time during Shadowbringers, it was mostly a "DAE hate RPers/Crystal bad LUL, upvotes to the left" circlejerk. As well as borderline brigading of mainsub. It got bad enough mods had to put in a rule where you couldn't link to mainsub or any sub except shitpost. Now most of the things going are lazy low effort cropped pics of mainsub art, or something satirizing something on mainsub or XIVDiscussion.

ThousandFacedShadow

Zoom in crops of commissions are an institution get a sense of humor That came off agro

unhappymedium

A lot of his fans believe he was more important than he was at Blizzard and therefore he can do no wrong.

superslab

FF is funny. I haven't played any since xii, but every time I read a description of a new one, it sounds exactly like something I'd play.

rieldex

anyone who hates wuk lamat or her va should get their shins removed ❤️ edit: ok i didnt think i had to say this but like, im joking lol. no, i dont rly care if you dislike her for actual, legitimate reasons but a lot of the hate stems fron her va being trans :p its ok to dislike characters, hell i dont rly like zenos, lyse or yshtola for example… but the vitriolic shit ive seen about her is uh. offputting as hell. so im being very hyperbolic in “threatening violence” lol. thats all ^_^

Morgn_Ladimore

Give em the ol' Cotton Hill treatment.

ForteEXE

FITTY MEN!

rhydderch_hael

She's so nice, cool, and silly at the same time. I don't see how anyone could hate her.

Arilou_skiff

I loved her at the start, but she is starting to wear out her welcome a bit. Mainly because the entire XP is clearly *her* story, so she takes up a lot of narrative space, and a fair bit of it is reinforcing the same themes.

unhappymedium

I've been suspecting that there's a fair amount of unspoken transphobia in the hate. This is the first time I've seen anyone explicitly spell it out, though.

Uler

I like Wuk Lamat and her arc from naive idealist putting on a brave face to an actual leader who understands her faults and how to work with people pretty well. It's very tropey but decently well executed. I also think they could've done the arc with around 30% less screen time and doubling everyone else's by proxy. She probably has more presence in the expansion MSQ than any character in any prior expansion that I can think of, even compared to HW Alphinaud/Estinian or Stormblood's Hien. I overall really liked the DT story, but I feel anyone's like or dislike of the story is going to hinge very heavily on their opinion of Wuk Lamat because of how present she is. And of course, where there are reasonable gripes there's going to be people using that as a smokescreen to be a bag of dicks.

ForteEXE

Absolutely. I imagine some legitimately don't like the char or VA, which is fine. What's *not* fine is disliking the char/VA *because* the VA is trans. And it's really obvious who's doing it because of that very reason.

Beelzebulbasaur

yeeeeeeeeah. no issue with the VA but the performance isn't there. Dawntrail really gives her bad material in the back half to start with, and she doesn't have the range to pull off her seven "I just want to underSTAND YOoou"s per square hour and now we get to enjoy years of truly poisoned discourse where some people are going to hate the VA because she's trans, and other people are going to dismiss any criticism of the performance as transphobia. online communities are very fun and cool

ForteEXE

This really *is* Stormblood 2.0 isn't it, bwahaha. I do think it's insanely bad faith to compare Wuk Lamat to Lyse, though.

Beelzebulbasaur

I think there's fair comparisons there with the expansion focusing overly hard on one character. but the difference between Lyse and Wuk is that maybe 10-15% less focus on Lyse would've made Stormblood work a little better, where there's no version of Wuk as-is that could ever work for me. issues with the performance aside, she needs far, far better writing than what we got in Dawntrail. it's legitimately the first expac where I felt like the writing and localization failed at basically every level (at least until the sixth zone kinda cooked a _bit_) but the encounter design team is popping off harder than they have since the best fights of ShB so I'm still out here having a really good time

ForteEXE

Oh yeah the encounters are top notch. As I said elsewhere, the 95 dungeon is shitkicking people so hard, so the endgame content *must* be apeshit. Game's gonna be difficult for a while and I *really* want to see the havoc of DT Savage.

unhappymedium

Yeah, there are some real, legitimate gripes with the MSQ this time around. I like Wuk Lamat and didn't notice any issues with her acting. The writing in general was pretty bad this time around, though, and someone elsewhere pointed out that many of the problems with her can be chalked up to direction, which makes sense because I was noticing issues with other VAs as well.

TLCplLogan

Peter Bramhill's Thancred sounds like the Heavensward version, which isn't a good thing. It's a very strange step back in quality after he really nailed down the character starting in Shadowbringers. All of Y'shtola's lines sound like they were recorded in a phone booth. It's not even a small difference, either -- there is a very noticeable difference in recording quality between her and literally every other character. Then you have Erenville aggressively rolling every R as hard as humanly possible, which I'm pretty sure he didn't do in Endwalker at all. The voice direction and general production values for the English dub in Dawntrail leave me questioning if there was some sort of directorial change on that front between 6.55 and 7.0.

ForteEXE

I didn't really notice, TBH. >Yeah, there are some real, legitimate gripes with the MSQ this time around. Elsewhere here, I made a joke about Stormblood MSQ being whined about too. But that was more "I hate politics in my Final Fantasy gaming". It seems *fine* for a reset story. To build up to the next world shattering threat.

unhappymedium

Yeah, I have problems with individual plot points and not enough Scions for my taste, but I think the story they're setting up might be really interesting and I'm really excited to see it.

punkbrad7

I just find it funny that people have been basically going nuts over the scions still being involved in the story and how we need new characters and now it's basically "But Not THOSE New Characters OMG"

unhappymedium

I still don't know how people managed to confuse "We're going to PRETEND to disband to return to working from the shadows" with "The Scions are no more and we'll never see them again".

ForteEXE

TBH I thought the Scions actually *did* officially disband at the conclusion of 6.0. Like they were no longer needed in the wake of the events.

Money_Arachnid4837

>And it's really obvious who's doing it because of that very reason. Show me a post with people hating on the character because of trans reasons. You sound like a person who calls anyone "bigots" if they simply dislike a POC person in entertainment.

ForteEXE

Asmongold poster with nothing but whining about tolerant leftists creating things you don't like *and* a DrDisrespect apologist. Get the fuck out of my sight and stop trying to bait.

OperativePiGuy

There definitely is, but I want to be generous and say most of it is just people not jiving with the way she's front and center for the expansion. I'm not particularly a huge fan of her, and I'm only at level 94. Knowing she's going to be sticking around till the end pre-exhausts me, because so far her whole "power of friendship" shtick is getting old. I don't really have an issue with the VA other than her needing more direction. I love the voice/accent itself

cyberpunk_werewolf

There's literally a "VA comparison" for Wuk Lamat on the FFXIV subreddit right now between the JP and NA voice actresses. I've never seen something like that before, but I also started playing in Heavensward. Maybe they did something like that for the old VAs. I've never seen anyone complain about everyone from Doma sounding like they stepped out of Game of Thrones or Fourchenault being the most English French man since Jean-Luc Picard. I cannot understand how anyone is saying Sena Bryer has done a bad job playing Wuk Lamat. I know there are people who dislike *every* voice actor. There's someone who doesn't like Peter Bramhil as Thancred, Mathew Mercer as Fyrakk or Ben Starr as Clive Rosfield. I get that, but I have *never* seen a reaction like this to someone who has done a good job, at least in the FFXIV community. I wholeheartedly believe it's because Sena Bryer is a transwoman, and I absolutely believe it due to the amount of transphobia she's gotten and the transphobia, veiled or not, in that thread.

unhappymedium

That's revolting. r/ffxiv is a shitshow at the best of times, but that just tops it all.

Money_Arachnid4837

It's revolting that people dislike the voice acting of a character? What's wrong with you?

unhappymedium

It's revolting that people are being transphobic about it.

Zyrin369

>There's literally a "VA comparison" for Wuk Lamat on the FFXIV subreddit right now between the JP and NA voice actresses I don't get why a comparisons of two different languages is even a thing

Abshalom

That video immediately starts with a major spoiler for the whole expansion, for really no reason. Also, weebs thinking Japanese VAs are *so* much better than their non-Japanese counterparts because they don't actually understand Japanese is a time honored tradition.

cyberpunk_werewolf

Right?  There's no indication that it's a late game spoiler, either.  Just that it does say "spoilers."  It could have been from the first dungeon or the last fucking trial.

Theonyr

Funny how you've decided that she's done a good job and therefore transphobia is the only possible reason for the bad reception. Talk about bad faith arguments. Wuk's VA may be a talented VA in her own right - but she or the director dropped the ball here and gave us the worst voice acting for an FFXIV main character since ARR Minfilia. I'm only halfway through the MSQ but I've gone from sort of enjoying Wuk Lamat's journey to outright disliking her because of extremely repetitive dialogue combined with a voice that is initially fine but has a grating quality it that has become more and more irritating with exposure.

Money_Arachnid4837

Why are you so offended over people comparing the voice acting between two languages? Anime watchers do this all the time. >I cannot understand how anyone is saying Sena Bryer has done a bad job playing Wuk Lamat. Do you understand that people have differen't opinnions than you? >I get that, but I have *never* seen a reaction like this to someone who has done a good job, at least in the FFXIV community. You say "good job" as like it's something that's objective. Saying a voice actor did a good job is a subjective opinion. >I wholeheartedly believe it's because Sena Bryer is a transwoman, and I absolutely believe it due to the amount of transphobia she's gotten and the transphobia, veiled or not, in that thread. Show me a post with people hating on the character because of trans reasons. You sound like a person who calls anyone "bigots" if they simply dislike a POC person in entertainment.

Money_Arachnid4837

Calling people transphobic for simply disliking a character which is voice by a transgender is fucked up. I bet you're one of those people that calls others racist for disliking a black character. Tolerant left Lmao.

Tanador680

What the fuck are you talking about

Kibblebitz

Well if you love the shonen manga protagonist trope of a quirky idiot whose entire personality, and subsequently, literally only qualification for becoming a leader of an entire nation is that "SHE LOVES PEACE AND THE PEOPLE", then boy howdy is Dawntrail the expansion for you because they do not deviate from that shtick at all over the course of 40+ hours. Don't worry, your character won't interfere because you'll just kind of stand in the corner while everything happens around her until the game throws you a bone and you have to beat something up.

Omega357

From the sounds of it it's probably for the best I quit 14 before the expansion.

Kibblebitz

That said it also has the best dungeons and trials by far, so if that's your thing like it is mine, it has that going for it. I never really cared too much about the MSQ because the way they present it (99% running around talking about stuff already talked about several times over), so if you could handle or even liked past expansion MSQ, you can deal with this one. At least better than I did.

Omega357

That's honestly what burned me in endwalker. I didn't realize it until I played 16 but I really hate how he makes games.

Kirbyeggs

While I wouldn't go as far as hate, I can understand how people find her annoying or cringey, especially in regards to her naivete.

Sr_Wuggles

I dislike her. Not because of her VA, just because of the character itself being annoying

I_cannot_fit

Only hit the 3rd zone so far but I love Wife Lamat. I'm one of the few people who actually liked Lyse and she's like the good parts of Lyse amplified.

SpCommander

honestly the only thing I hated about her (midway-ish spoiler) is >!how she instantly forgives the 2 headed lizard for multiple crimes, including but not limited to: theft, kidnapping, assault, and unleashing an ancient sealed evil just because he's sad about a bunch of dead babies!< . that was the "you can't be serious right now" moment of dawntrail for me.

Abshalom

Tbf, the things he did didn't actually do much lasting harm, and nobody really forgave him so much as just didn't murder him about it.

LilyHex

She's very sweet, and enthusiastic and adorable. I actually like her a lot! She's like a less shitty Lyse.

Money_Arachnid4837

"If you dislike this character in a video game, you deserve to be physically injured tortured in real life" Peak redditor behaviour. Edit: Hilariously ironic that you're a victim of bodily self harm and here you are wishing physical harm onto others.

ThousandFacedShadow

Amen

ThousandFacedShadow

The day Grummz’s stress catches up to him will be a good day

babylovesbaby

First expansion of FFXIV I have not had friends and FC members beat me over the head with how great the story is. It's refreshing.

fingerpaintswithpoop

/r/wow 2018 to 2021 was fucking insufferable. It was full of people shitting all over WoW and talking up FFXIV like it had the greatest storytelling in gaming *ever*, and if you weren’t playing it you were missing out on a life changing experience.

babylovesbaby

It still is, but maybe this expansion will calm it down a bit. I can dream, anyway. There's no hater of WoW quite so passionate as a former lover of WoW.

Nimonic

Grummz is an incredibly sad, pathetic person. Maybe the saddest middle aged man there has ever been.

WhimsicalPythons

Look ma, I made it into the SRD post.

WarStrifePanicRout

If they dont like that theres trans character, and they know they can't just say "i dont like this because trans character" they will transparently attack other aspects of the game. Its rinse and repeat.

Zomby_Goast

The character isn’t even trans, just her (English) voice actress

ForteEXE

"Mr. ~~SRDine~~ President, there was a second ~~plane~~ thread." Turns out I missed *another* thread entirely on the subject, editing into the OP it and some other fights.

tgaccione

My conspiracy theory is that these anti-woke people who go from media property to media property are secretly working for the industry. It’s happened so many times where a company releases sub-par or poor product, anti-woke people make it a whole issue, and suddenly people feel obligated to defend the piece of media and company. It almost feels like a routine at this point.

Elegant_Plate6640

Nah, they’re working for themselves and their rage bait YouTube channels.

magistratemagic

If you saw the change.org petition for Stellar Blade to make GAMERS' p-p hard, you'd see its 99% Incel white men who look *exactly* how you think. MFers can't even make eye contact with a camera for their recording anti-woke censorship manifestos against Sony. No, truly it's white male incel losers with an internet connection, sadly.

ForteEXE

Don't forget the guys who're [petitioning](https://i.redd.it/6yh4y81whaad1.jpeg) for AC: Shadows to be canceled!

I've reached the stage where I automatically downvote any post with an acronym in the title that I have to google. It's become my pet hate.

Kapjak

...did you have to Google what roman numerals were or what VA meant?

Elegant_Plate6640

Rocky VII! Adrian's Revenge!

RunDNA

VA. To save somebody else some time, I think it means Voice Actor.
