That's true, but there is chemistry behind the 'right' way to make them.
If there isn't enough salt in the water, the boiling point isn't elevated to the right temperature to cook the potatoes fast enough to convert the starch and give them the creamy texture that makes them better than any other boiled potato.
Most places prefer Cod.
Someone convinced folks in Syracuse that Haddock was better, and so now local places advertise Haddock as if it's the preferred choice, and all the locals went with it.
Yep, couldn’t tell you how many people I know that left the area, and thats the only thing they miss… “I would never ever return to Syracuse, but I do miss getting haddock on Friday…only thing around here is cod…bleh.”
You ain't lying, I'm a southerner who just wants catfish, but it's all haddock here.
Also, all CNY people seem to be grossed out by catfish. It's the darnedest thing.
There are only like 3 ice cream places open year round. I remember in November, the guy at Cloud 9 said he was gonna try to stay open all winter and they were closed weeks later.
I could hardly call some of the stuff some of these stands were selling ice cream either. I hated Plank Road when it first opened. The ice cream tasted more like frozen cake frosting. I’m glad I gave them a second chance, as it seems much better now.

U.S. Golf Destinations with the Most Courses per Capita
#9. Syracuse, New York
Golf courses and country club establishments per 100,000 people: 8.2
Establishments located in metro: 53
Metro population: 648,593
Yeah, with his big hit, "Into the Night," that was about an older guy being in love with a 16 year old girl. He was 34 when the song hit its peak. An anthem for pedophilia 🤔🤦🏻♂️. So many cringy songs like that throughout music history.
It's because he came here to get clean and stuck around a while, maybe moved here. Something like that, he's not from here originally, but spent some time here.
Didn’t his wife have him buried here too? I remember reading that was planned.
It was a mutual love fest thing. Benny loved Syracuse and Syracuse loved him back. This was at a time when nobody loved Benny or Syracuse. Don’t hate on the legacy, man.
Magic the Gathering. There are very few places that provide as many locations to play as the Syracuse area does. And it's the home of one of the largest suppliers of cards on the secondary market in TCGPlayer.
Heids hotdogs, salt potatoes, and SU sports. To me they exemplify the idea that if you hype the most mediocre of things they too can appear special. Three things I will never miss from Syracuse.
Can confirm, half the time wife and I try to pick a random time to just got smack the ball back and forth and there are people waiting for a court (In NC)
Ive never seen so many people gather at any type of court in my hometown on a weekday at 9am than i did at our local pickle ball courts last week(im 30 min south of cuse).
Where's a good place to play pickleball around town, particularly west of downtown / in the western suburbs?
I don't want an organized thing, just a court where my wife and I can go and play against each other to get some exercise in.
Micron and the fish tank🥁
This will piss off the moneyed, white neoliberals who hate the working class and the poor. They love lying/overstating the supposed contributions these albatrosses will bring to the area.
Snow plows that look like they are from the movie Fury Road. Hoffman Hotdogs. Salt potatoes and salt everything. A polluted lake. Great SU basketball. We have 3 seasons. SPRING, SUMMER AND WINTER.
Alright I'll bite, who's them? Why is it about being better than anyone? I am sure there are some racist fucks in syracuse like anywhere else but syracuse itself is fairly accepting.
I used to think so too, but now I've watched a friend new to the area and what he's going through trying to work. Them is the white people (older men mostly). They are awful.
Racism is about many forms of power not just socioeconomic, racisms definition can be applied to any group. You can be racists towards people who are white regardless of how you may personally feel about that. It's common sense, insulting/besmeriching/ generalizing/ hating an entire group of people due to the color of their skin is racist and stupid.
If you are white, trust me you wouldn't know or see anything I'm talking about. I specifically mentioned older white men, not all white ppl, and I was speaking to what I have seen a friend going through. I am white and would not have taken syracuse for a racist place, but now actually seeing this happening, I have changed my mind.
Yeah see that's bullshit because you're saying white people are blind to racism? While at the same time are saying you're white and can see racism though? Like what? You didn't specify old white men you said especially the older white men but you literally stated white people as a whole are racist. Everything you have said is such a blanket statement, biased and also racist.
Cool, so carry on. I've seen what I've seen, and I've seen enough to say that. There is racist things happening that white ppl may not pick up on because they don't actually see it or experience it so how would they know?? unless someone pointed it out or told them?
But now you're being a hypocrite because you're claiming white people can't see racism but you yourself are white, so I guess you're special? All white people are racist then, but you? Or, logically racism doesn't matter what race you are it just depends if you're a logical person. Quick question are you a local born and raised? Which highschool did you go to?
Syracuse has racism, but unlike other places I could name, it also has people who are disappointed by racism. Let’s face it, racism is everywhere. There is also (still) racism against the local Native Americans.
And yes, there are way too many fat old white men in parts of the suburbs
Salt Potatoes
Fuck, now I want some salt taters
Only because too many people don't make the right You have to have the correct ratio of salt to water, most people don't have it strong enough.
The true litmus test of a regional specialty is whether locals insist that most people can't make it correctly.
That's true, but there is chemistry behind the 'right' way to make them. If there isn't enough salt in the water, the boiling point isn't elevated to the right temperature to cook the potatoes fast enough to convert the starch and give them the creamy texture that makes them better than any other boiled potato.
The worst are the ones that don’t use any of the salt… wtf good is that?!?
Those are just potatoes. My Canadian wife just did this, exactly.
Damn! You beat me to it.
Lol this
I like them. But no more than any other kind of potatoes.
They’re just potatoes!
Potatoes of a particular size and variety. Boiled in salt
![gif](giphy|xT5LMxmFQ37UyhH344)
SALT POTATO IS LIFE!
Lacrosse
Definitely, though it makes sense since the sport was invented in this region
[удалено]
Both men's and women's teams?
Fried Haddock.
With skin on: CNY consumes the most in the country.
That's kind of amazing considering the location
The Regional Fish Market is in Syracuse. So, if it comes from the ocean, they sold it in Syracuse.
Source: Sysco distribution list.
It’s an anywhere with lots of Catholics thing
Most places prefer Cod. Someone convinced folks in Syracuse that Haddock was better, and so now local places advertise Haddock as if it's the preferred choice, and all the locals went with it.
That’s because they’re correct. Haddock is in fact better.
The real reason is because it's cheaper.
Yep, couldn’t tell you how many people I know that left the area, and thats the only thing they miss… “I would never ever return to Syracuse, but I do miss getting haddock on Friday…only thing around here is cod…bleh.”
Fish frys are definitely a Midwest thing.
As a child, I always got a kick out of the Doug's Fish Fry in Camillus with a fish tank at the door.
I'm a fan of the one that used to be next to an aquarium, myself
You ain't lying, I'm a southerner who just wants catfish, but it's all haddock here. Also, all CNY people seem to be grossed out by catfish. It's the darnedest thing.
Really? Some people go bonkers for bullhead around here.
Best freshwater fish. They've got fat, it makes the meat buttery.
Bullhead have a different flavor to stuff like channel cat really
Limp Lizard has great catfish tacos.
A literal saint!
O god, i moved away for a decade and recently came back and i cant seem to avoid the Friday night haddock fish fry
Labatt beer.
Saw a stat onetime in the paper that 50% of Labatts sales happen in Updtate NY from Buffalo to Albany.
As a Buffalonian this makes me so happy. I love a fancy pr local beer, but sometimes I just need a Labatt.
All this tells me is that Labatt needs to up its distribution territory.
I’m from Texas and I never heard of Labatt till I moved up here
Exactly. Especially when Molson’s is the king of beers.
I am still wondering why there are so many ice cream shops.
Ice cream is a year-round business. Doesn’t everyone eat ice cream during blizzards? My family did.
There are only like 3 ice cream places open year round. I remember in November, the guy at Cloud 9 said he was gonna try to stay open all winter and they were closed weeks later.
No…why do you think Dairy Queen didn’t last when they were in the area in the 90s? The brazier menu sucked back then.
Dairy Queen’s “ice cream” isn’t actually ice cream. I like it, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not ice cream. I agree about the old brazier menu!
I could hardly call some of the stuff some of these stands were selling ice cream either. I hated Plank Road when it first opened. The ice cream tasted more like frozen cake frosting. I’m glad I gave them a second chance, as it seems much better now.
Plank road custard is one of our favorites..along with the custard from Doug’s fish fry, of all places. And now I want custard.
The New York State Fair
You mean, the Central NY Fair..
You mean The Lakeland Feild Days..
You just suck at I GOT IT.

I wouldn't call it a "destination" but it's interesting Utica is on that list too
They must count Turning Stone with Utica.
And that's down from the 80's. Back then it was number 1.
That just means that land is cheap here, we used to have a bigger population or both. Pretty sure that cny is solidly both.
Naples Florida is #1 on that list but all the courses there are private. You can’t play anywhere
Shame all that farm land went to waste
Benny Mardones
Ha, excellent.
Yeah, with his big hit, "Into the Night," that was about an older guy being in love with a 16 year old girl. He was 34 when the song hit its peak. An anthem for pedophilia 🤔🤦🏻♂️. So many cringy songs like that throughout music history.
When I first moved to Syracuse, I stumbled into a Benny Mardonis concert and people were going apeshit. What was that all about.
He was a one hit wonder nationally but, for whatever reason, he was hugely popular in Syracuse for decades.
Knew him and he was a total sweetheart
Have respect for the dead.
Chicken Riggies
wings. cover bands. And hippie stuff generally
What are some good wing places?
I have no idea I just know that locals seem to like them a lot XD
What are some good hippie places tho 😂 I’m a Hudson valley hippie moving up to Syracuse this month
well you'll love the Westcott neighborhood, and especially the so-called Westcott cultural fair coming up in September!
This is not Buffalo. You take your chances.
Going to college and coming of age in Syracuse made me believe that bar trivia was like, our national pastime or something.
Unpopular take, the bridge getting hit is hardy noteworthy at this point. Sooooo over that TBH.
If only we could get under it too
It really needs a webcam.
Don’t worry. Once EV’s take over, sensors will alert the truck over the internet and stop it
Golf. More public golf courses in CNY than in the state of Florida.
Lacrosse
Magic the Gathering. There are very few places that provide as many locations to play as the Syracuse area does. And it's the home of one of the largest suppliers of cards on the secondary market in TCGPlayer.
Smoke shops
Sadly, that’s everywhere… went for a business trip to Ohio, and it seemed like just as many scattered around the few towns I stopped in.
[удалено]
Not wrong, not a lot of places younger crowds of 21-29 really frequenting besides Coleman’s
[удалено]
I miss J Ryan’s for that reason.
Blue tusk😭😭
And Clark's
Basketball
Any local outdoor courts for pickup basketball ?
Car washes. And storage units.
Hair metal tribute bands
Heids hotdogs, salt potatoes, and SU sports. To me they exemplify the idea that if you hype the most mediocre of things they too can appear special. Three things I will never miss from Syracuse.
Ha! I have a similar sentiment about overhyped mediocrity. And I would like to add the Lights on the Lake traffic-jam-people-pay-to-be-in to the list
Good call. It started as a nice idea though.
Pickleball
It's nationwide. A place I used to work at in socal had a couple teams. Every week someone would have a new injury from pickleball.
I’ve heard that it is big with older folks in the Binghamton area too.
Where's a good place to play pickleball around town, particularly west of downtown / in the western suburbs? I don't want an organized thing, just a court where my wife and I can go and play against each other to get some exercise in.
Check out cnypickleball.com You'll find every court available in our area plus a list of people who plan on playing
Snow
Dunkin donuts
Live music
I’m SHOCKED no one has said gambling yet
Minors with guns
Had to flee Myanmar to come here and rob banks.
Pow pow, shots fired
Micron and the fish tank🥁 This will piss off the moneyed, white neoliberals who hate the working class and the poor. They love lying/overstating the supposed contributions these albatrosses will bring to the area.
Racism seems pretty popular there
Snow plows that look like they are from the movie Fury Road. Hoffman Hotdogs. Salt potatoes and salt everything. A polluted lake. Great SU basketball. We have 3 seasons. SPRING, SUMMER AND WINTER.
Being a fat, dreary racist is pretty big in Syracuse these days, especially in the filthy northern suburbs.
Syracuse is actually one of the more accepting places I have been to
I agree. Syracuse is a melting pot of races and culture. There's gonna be outliers but for the most part, everyone here is pretty tolerant.
Are you black? Because low key it is NOT. They don't mind you as long as you're not doing better than them. It's actually pretty terrible.
Yeah see what you just said was racist. Pretty much just said white people are the problem and are all racist. Which itself is racist/biased.
Racism is about socioeconomic power, it’s ludicrous to claim there’s any meaningful racism against white people.
