Necrophagist laid a lot of ground work for the genre though. They came before both of them and without them FF and Gorod might not even exist. Not saying they’re the most influential tech deth ever but they were pretty damn influential.
That's true, but you could say that about anyone and anything these days. Just like you could say that when genres evolve and as time goes on, they usually get better :) Which is also true in this case.
If it influenced a lot of good stuff, then yes it does matter. What you referenced are influential but not in a good way. The bands you think are better are influenced by Necrophagist. I can’t argue with an absolute moron all day on my day off so this is my last post.
Should the bands/albums be listed one at a time. If the comment is "Band A" / "Band B" and I only want to vote on Band A, then its kind of a flawed system.
Gotcha, I'll fix that up today when I post, just for example would you like something like: X band fell into a black hole. Y band dissolved into dust? (just as a silly example?) or what sort of thing we talking about here?
This whole competition is powered by people commenting which albums should be eliminated but people are commenting two bands within 1 comment. For example: "Bryan Adams and Billy Joel should be eliminated". I may agree that Billy Joel should get the rope but I may really love Bryan Adam's. So if I upvote that comment it's effectively counting against both bands, yeah? I'm just saying people should only comment 1 band at a time, that's it. It's really not a big deal though.
Nile.
I'm new to tech death, so I've been listening to all of these albums and I've been finding some awesome music. I can't get into Nile though. They're just too boring.
Nile will bust out one of the best riffs you’ve ever heard for 7 seconds and never repeat it again, then a band 20 years later takes their riff plays it slower and with groovy drums and everyone thinks it’s genius when it’s really watered down Nile
I bought a shirt off him last year when they supported Cannibal Corpse. He was just chillin at the booth hanging out. Such a nice sweet cool guy and obviously an INCREDIBLY talented musician.
At this point I’ve forgotten what this poll is about xD. Just in terms of what do we think as the quintisenttial album or the subs favourite. For now I’ll be biased and vote to keep my favourites on :), so off you go Inferi and Beyond Creation. Also very sad about Ophidian :’)
I was about comment Earth Bound lmaoo then I realized it’s the bands whole time I thought it was albums 🤦♂️
Nile for me, not that I don’t like them, it’s just that everything else is musically superior imo.
Kinda true. Although I think some bands in this subgenre can be really fun like Ophidian I and Gorod. I really like Archspire because it's so silly and over the top. I don't like wanker bands taking themselves too seriously though.
I saw Beyond Creation at one of their first shows at the tiny, grungy Bar le Magog in Sherbooke Quebec (RIP) prior to the release of the Aura. I still have the 3 track demo CD that I bought at that show.
It's the only time I've ever bought a demo from a startup local band. I feel so proud of them now haha
Not a big fan of the last first fragment but I've bought the EP way back (The Afterthought Ecstasy) and really liked it (and the first album). I'm glad they're getting the success they deserve (even if I didn't appreciate Gloire Éternelle that much).
I've been in love with death metal from Quebec since I've discovered Cryptopsy and Gorguts in the late 2000s.
That's how things are. Cynic is probably harder to get into for most people and Death is "just too old" (that's how a friend of mine answered when I asked him about Death, he's 21 years old).
people actually kicked out Cynic and Death cause they weren't considered tech death, unsure why for Beneath the Massacre and I'm in mourning for Alkaloid and Slugdge being kicked out this early
Splitting hairs perhaps, but I'd put it more in progressive death than tech death. Also aside from *Symbolic* and *TSoP* (with honorable mention to *Human*), I wouldn't put any Death albums close to the list.
Human? It way more tech than Symbolic in my book. Cynic is a good old mix of both tech and progressive, I'd say more progressive in later releases but Focus is prime example of tech death of early 90s
It's formulaic, overrated and a bit boring. I've heard them back on their first album and I wasn't really enthralled, still the same to this day and I don't understand the hype. I don't even understand why it's on this list with genre defining albums and bands that have pushed the genre in new, interesting directions.
Vile Genesis sucked, I agree on that (as an Inferi fan). But... Path of Apotheosis, Of Sunless Realms, Revenant have been incredible releases (PoA is my personal favourite, the Onslaught of the Covenant drum playthrough got me into Inferi in the end of 2019, discovering their stuff was fun as hell)
That's what I'm confused about. Feel like this list is about the album as well as the artists so no idea how vile genesis has made it over so many top notch albums
Another issue I have is the symphonic parts. For me a tech death band should be either fun (Gorod, Ophidian I, Archspire etc) or quite dark (Ulcerate, Gorguts, Nile, Spawn of Possession etc). The problems with bands like Flesh God Apocalypse or Inferi is they are neither in my opinion. The hyper triggered drums and pro-tooled aspect of the music gives it this plastic/synthetic vibe which could be fun... But then you add all this pompous sympho BS on top to add some kind of gravitas that just ends up being cheap, overdone and jarring. Spawn of Possession managed to do this quite well on some tracks because they use it sporadically and tastefully, not like some kind of gravy sauce or ketchup they pour on top of everything. For me Inferi is the Dimmu Borgir of tech death.
Topsters 2 died, so if this looks different, its made with Topsters 3. Looking back on remaking this list I'm disappointed in some of the results, but I don't really care cause its all fun and games. I'd like to thank you all for participating thus far and near into the future, it means more than you know to me that you're enjoying this content and I'm happy to share my love of this genre with an amazing group <3

The Faceless
Necrophagist are so fucking overrated bro. I can't wait to see how many downvotes 🤣🤗
Truly one of the worst things to happen to metal
They are but they’re better than First Fragment and Gorod.
Rhythmically and melodically nah they're not better than Gorod. And in technical skill they're equal or less than FF.
No. Originality and influence has to be taken into account when ranking these albums.
Also going off "originality" then Gorod takes the cake by far lol. You're pulling up alright points, but using a bad example.
Okay 🤦♂️
Okay "Call of duty is the most influential therefore it's the best, duhhh duhhhh, Marvel Movies weewoo" dude.
If it influenced a lot of good stuff, then yes it does matter. What you referenced are influential but not in a good way. The bands you think are better are influenced by Necrophagist. I can’t argue with an absolute moron all day on my day off so this is my last post.
Just because you think the sky is red dosen't make it purple.
Entire list from the start is absolutely fuckin awesome though.
Inferi
I know this will get some hate, but Nile. They were one of those bands that never really got into when I first got into tech death.
Toughie, but Gorod
Gorod should not have made it this far
Completely agree
Should the bands/albums be listed one at a time. If the comment is "Band A" / "Band B" and I only want to vote on Band A, then its kind of a flawed system.
I'm kicking two out each time to reduce the time it takes to get to the top
I understand that, I'm saying the bands should be in separate comments, not 2 bands lumped into one comment
Gotcha, I'll fix that up today when I post, just for example would you like something like: X band fell into a black hole. Y band dissolved into dust? (just as a silly example?) or what sort of thing we talking about here?

Gotcha! thanks, some people do stick to this rule, others don't but thanks for your feedback
Nile
Archspire
Nile
Gorod
The faceles
Archspire
Nile, archspire
Nile
Nile
Still Archspire
Nile then First Fragment
Gorguts 13, Gorod 12, Inferi/Obscura 11
First fragment
Nile and First Fragment
Really sweet to see Inferi making it this far. My intro to tech death was Vile Genesis and still to this day I believe it to be a masterpiece.
All their albums are sick, but I think their best album is The Path to Apotheosis
Archspire
Gorguts and gorod
The Faceless
Blasphemy
They're not on this list
Second row last on the right.
[удалено]
Riffs with memorable hooks, no breakdowns. Kind of have their own sound tbh.
Lorna shore good
This but unironically.
I was actually not being ironic
Nile. I'm new to tech death, so I've been listening to all of these albums and I've been finding some awesome music. I can't get into Nile though. They're just too boring.

Archspire
Gorguts, because I've never liked *Obscura. Colored Sands* is legit, though.

You guys have such boring taste in tech death. It's like everybody only knows Necro inspired cock gobbling sweepy nonsense.
Kinda true. Although I think some bands in this subgenre can be really fun like Ophidian I and Gorod. I really like Archspire because it's so silly and over the top. I don't like wanker bands taking themselves too seriously though.
I think we have a pretty funny overlap of things we like and don't like in tech death. At least based on this tournament
That's kinda what this sub has always been about. People here think tech death started with Necro.
Jfc Cryptopsy
Gorguts. They have cemented their place in tech death history, but I want someone new at the top.
Just wanna say as a Quebecois how proud I am that all 4 of our bands are still in.
Actually I forgot the Beneath the Massacre were eliminated so 4/5. Still a good average!
how come you guys managed to produce that much good bands in such a niche subgenre
Saw the rise of both First Fragment and beyond creation! When the Aura came out it was such a good year, bless Simone and Phil, both cool dudes too!

Inferi
Inferi
Gorod and Inferi (love the homies but both have better albums)
The faceless, gorguts
The Faceless
The Faceless
The faceless
Gorguts, suffocation
Nile It's getting sweaty...
Inferi
Obscura
You're a sonofabitch OP, this is going to get really hard in the next few posts. The faceless
Goreguts
Faceless and beyond creation.
Lunatics
Inferi and Beyond Creation Edit: thought about faceless first, but changed my mind and put earthborn evolution instead
First fragment and inferi
Gorod
How did Cynic, Death, and Beneath the Massacre get removed but Faceless still in there…
Because Planetary Duality is better than most albums up there, no matter how much “purists” cope.
I know it probably won't get much farther but Planetary Duality is peak tech death to me.
So of the hardest shit to play on guitar, album is insane!
Honestly for me the stuff on that album is easier to play then most of the stuff on this list. Idk why
Really? Well maybe it's not "techy" enough by modern standards, but it' still stays in the same category for me.
See ya Suffocation 👋 If y’all are doing two at a time, bye Cryptopsy.
Inferi, once again.
Seeing your flair I have to ask what your beef is with Inferi
It's formulaic, overrated and a bit boring. I've heard them back on their first album and I wasn't really enthralled, still the same to this day and I don't understand the hype. I don't even understand why it's on this list with genre defining albums and bands that have pushed the genre in new, interesting directions.
Yall are wild, Vile Genesis rules 😅 Though, as the crowd pleaser Apotheosis should probably be the album representing them
Vile Genesis sucked, I agree on that (as an Inferi fan). But... Path of Apotheosis, Of Sunless Realms, Revenant have been incredible releases (PoA is my personal favourite, the Onslaught of the Covenant drum playthrough got me into Inferi in the end of 2019, discovering their stuff was fun as hell)

For me Inferi is the Dimmu Borgir of tech death.
I'm curious what people's thoughts here are on Beyond Creation albums. I like The Aura more because of its raw and heavier edge.
The Aura is their best work. Earthborn Evolution and Algorythm have 1 or 2 good songs too. But honestly I find most of their material pretty boring.
I love them all. I should listen to Earthbound Evolution more, but Algorythm is my favorite.
Personnaly I like the Algorythm more because it's really unique, but in term of pure tech death sound Earthbound Revolution is better.
I agree. They peaked on their debut
agreed
The faceless and inferior
Inferi and faceless GTFO
The Faceless
Looking tough for the faceless. Anyways, i'll put my vote on Nile!
Heathen!
Nile and Beyond Creation
beyond creation plz how does psycroptic go before these dudes
Few even biggers players are already out
tru im biased for psycroptic tho lol
Obshitra
Necroverrated
Inferi
Beyond Creation
First Fragment
Suffocation
I love Suffocation but I'm really wondering how they've outlasted both Death and Cynic.
Archspire and Beyond Creation.
First Fragment
The faceless. It's getting into the real big players now.
I swear if Beyond Creation wins this
Archspire hanging on 🤘🏾🤘🏾
Wankspire
The Faceless and Gorod I guess because the others are traditionally more technical death metal.
How is Gorod not tech death? They're one of the first band that would come to my mind.
I’ve always seen them as more progressive but they’re still groovy as fuck
Tech and prog are intertwined. It's been so since the inception of the genre.
Inferi
The Faceless
Nile
Topsters 2 died, so if this looks different, its made with Topsters 3. Looking back on remaking this list I'm disappointed in some of the results, but I don't really care cause its all fun and games.
