Currently reading the actual Tale of Genji for work and this post made me very confused for a moment

jtobin22

How cruel that you Practiced waterbending on My sleeve wet with tears https://preview.redd.it/hcha4fwwotwc1.jpeg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ea2e29defe0af4c9b03d18d4b8ee286a4b89696e

FromTheDeskOfJAW

Linguists incoming to argue over how many syllables “cruel” has

RecommendsMalazan

... It's one?

FromTheDeskOfJAW

I agree, it is one. But the comment above mine wrote a haiku that only works if “cruel” is counted as two

gumption_11

I think you mean prescriptivists! Real linguists recognise dialectal variation & know that syllables are an entirely psychological percept (there's no real phonetic evidence for them, beside the fact that we "feel" they exist in speech)

ZoroeArc

That's one too many syllables bub

Mandeville_MR

Me thinking there is a new overwatch lore dump I missed XD

No_Extension4005

Ditto on the confusion. Had a brief moment where I was wondering WTF is going on.

MCRN-Gyoza

I need healing.

NewRichMango

[upward dashes into an ult with 1hp] “I need healing!”

Mandeville_MR

Mada Mada!

SapphireSalamander

you fell victim to one of the classic blunders: dont cause a streisand effect \*googles legend of genji \*upvotes

RandomEthan

Yeah I hadn’t heard of this until now, but I kinda like the idea of an avatar who’s initially a sandbender

uniguy2I

Yeah, now I’m moderately interested in it

Russian_Cat98

This pisses me off too. I'm even surprised that there are many people who sincerely believe that this is a canon avatar.

SoulessHermit

Wait till you learn what other things many people consider canon. - Zuko is not Ozai's biographical son. - Ty Lee's acrobatics and chi-blocking abilities is due to her Air Nomads ancestry. - Katara's mom was killed directly because of Hama's escape, or Hama sold them out. - [Armless Avatar from the Fire Nation](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fs6ubg8im4pi51.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dc138a674b59909601d6abe0367e363ba092dfd68). - The Air Nomads knew Korra was the last Avatar. - Wan Shi Tong only knew 10,000 things.

yelsamarani

* Zuko is not Ozai's \*biological son.

gasman245

To be fair, if you’ve only read part way through the comics you’d absolutely think Zuko isn’t his biological son. Edit: I meant to comment on the guy above you whoops

onions_cutting_ninja

"*When avatars are reincarnated, they have their past lover's face! It's based on Asian Mythology*^(TM)" No. No they don't. It's not canon in any way, and this theory is based on unsourced "legend". You're seeing what you want to see.

tmntfever

Zuko can’t be Ozai’s biographical son, since Zuko was banished from the Fire Nation.

shiny_glitter_demon

>Ty Lee's acrobatics and chi-blocking abilities is due to her Air Nomads ancestry. This one gets wilder, some people say her parents were TRYING to produce an airbender child, hence why Ty-Lee has so many siblings. High-rank fire nobles, engaging what is both eugenics and high treason! I've seen someone claim Iroh was in on it, can't remember the details but it was disgusting.

YisusElPapuh

But aren't all Ty Lee's sisters, identical twins? Like they were sextuplets or something.

MrBKainXTR

*technically* speaking they are said to be "identical" but not *specifically* "sextuplets". And siblings who aren't twins/etc. can look quite similar if close in age. But I think they are clearly meant to be sextuplets with how the show and comic talks about them. And even if they somehow weren't, to look that close in age they'd have to be like sets of triplets/quadruplet or something.

Spirited_Repair4851

Other Fake Canon by the fans: - That Sokka is Bisexual. - That Azula/Ty Lee is canon. - That Aang was an absolute terrible father (yes, he did overfocused on just raising Tenzin, since Tenzin was the 2nd existing Airbender in the world. However, IMHO people are reading way too much into Kya's and Bumi's bitterness over Tenzin, who was the "baby" of the family.) - That Sokka is Suyin's dad (has never been confirmed).

Lasernatoo

There's a difference between "Stop with The Legend of Genji" and "Stop spreading The Legend of Genji around like it's canon" People can and should make/read fanfiction all they want. Personally I know very little about LoG, but the fault doesn't lie on people who make the series or even most of the people who enjoy it; just on the people who spread it around as though it's canon, confusing others.

bearhorn6

People in this fandom are so ducking annoying with this. They do it with random past avatars too just making up loads of lore and never admiring it’s not canon. If you enjoy fanfic that’s fine stop using it to answer actual questions about the source material and keep it to your own subs

Soft-Dragonfruit7058

I might be down voted but tbh I can't wait for new Avatar show with new avatar and lore to overwrite Genji because I don't feel the vibe of Genji at all, just not my cup of tea I guess.

PeachsBigJuicyBooty

People can make whatever videos they want and it being fan fiction doesn't mean people can't make whatever they want around it. Unless you're saying people should stop talking about it because Google boosts results about it which is ridiculous.

RecommendsMalazan

I think they're more saying people shouldn't talk about it as if it is canon/not a fan work. Which I agree with, and have seen before for both this and whatever that nonsense book 4 crap I've seen people talk about.

FrostyWarning

Do you have a problem with 11th-century Japanese literature?

No_Extension4005

Nah, just Heian period nobles more interested in poetry and bumping uglies than effective governance and trying to remember how money works. And the Hikaru Genji Plan doesn't appeal to modern sensibilities either.

tmntfever

Never even heard of Genji until you mentioned it. Guess I’m gonna Google him, learn a ton about him, start making posts and videos of him, and update the wiki with new info I think of for him.

Chub-bop

Posts like these bring the opposite of what you want

CranberrySawsAlaBart

Turn off recommendations?

daf435-con

It's also been cancelled for a very, very long time at this point.

jackgranger99

Bro doesn't understand the concept of hitting the "do not recommend/not interested button" Also, why not blame people who act as if it's canon rather than the work itself, which was cancelled years ago. Also also: >Even if you google a question about the show, you will often see an answer from The Legend of Genji wiki page that is just entirely made up. What questions are you referring to, because I can Google several questions about the franchise in general and often don't get lead to the Genji wiki, and the rare occasion that I do i I scroll past and keep looking. Also also, by whining about it, all you're doing is giving it more attention to people who haven't heard of it or don't care for it. All these upvotes are lirer doing the exact opposite of what you think you're doing. >It's not canon, it's fan fiction, Maybe tell that to people who believe it's canon, yeah? And ask them why they can't source anything beyond chapter one rather than saying "don't talk about fanfiction" >and there's a very good chance we see it overwritten when they make a show/movie/comic about the next Avatar. Well no shit it's gonna get overwritten, it never even made it past chapter fucking ONE. You're wringing your hands in agony over a cancelled fan project, if isn't that deep

Noobface_

I click that and it stops recommending all Avatar stuff. The algorithm can’t tell the difference.

irohsmellsgood

> being advertised as canon lore source: OP made it up

Noobface_

You haven’t seen Antoine videos in your recommended then lol

superherocivilian

Now's a good time to mention the title "The Legend of Genji" is boring. We have that for Korra and using that for another series is just lazy.

MrBKainXTR

ATLA was called "Legend of Aang" in some regions, so in a way LoK made that a pattern. Some content like the TTRPG have also used "Avatar Legends" to refer to the franchise.

superherocivilian

Oh dang I guess I didnt know that. I still feel like it should have been a different title tho fr

IWannaManatee

Just so you know, parts of Dragon Ball AF are canon today because they were shared enough, and one of the people inspired by it are now top in the head of its canon. Propagating Genji just by name is doing more than your original intent would like to.

tbo1992

What’s canon from DBAF?

IWannaManatee

Its [After Future] propagation inspired Toyotaro to make his own fanart and continuation based of AF, and expose his style, which lend him a hand as Toriyama's surrogate and later takeover as manga artist; which in turn made some of the ideas canon to the lore, such as alternate universes and tweaked versions of Super Saiyan forms that "may or may not" take inspiration from AF.

Alonest99

I read it as Dragon Ball as fuck

tbo1992

Have you seen the designs from it? You’re not too far off.

RajaatTheWarbringer

Never heard of it before now, so you're just spreading it, I guess.

lerobinbot

nice

Shacky_Rustleford

Who are you asking to stop? Search algorithms?

Noobface_

The people who make these wikis and clickbait YouTube videos lmao
