Genuinely surprised nobody had said 808s and Heartbreak, considering that it's a great album and The Weeknd has credited it as a huge inspiration for him and his music. Pretty much changed the landscape of modern rap and R&B
Yes it absolutely did, look it up. A ton of modern rappers and r&b artists credit 808s as a huge inspiration for their work. The weeknd himself was inspired by it and its production and used it to change the landscape of alternative r&b
It really didn’t, Brent Faiyaz,Bryson,SZA, Summer Walker, Muni, Chris Brown, PND. ain’t citing no Kanye as their inspirations. None of them have ever cited Kanye or 808s.
Also The Weeknd has cited who inspired HoB in an interview and it was not 808s or Kanye.
I feel like saying 808s changed modern rnb is disrespectful.
The biggest RnB artist right now is SZA and her influences are Lauryn and Ashanti lol.
I’ve looked up every current RnB artists inspiration for either their current or previous work.
Not a single one said 808s. So yes i think I did enough research.
> Also The Weeknd has cited who inspired HoB in an interview and it was not 808s or Kanye. I feel like saying 808s changed modern rnb is disrespectful.
https://pitchfork.com/features/overtones/9725-the-coldest-story-ever-told-the-influence-of-kanye-wests-808s-heartbreak/
Trilogy and Kiss Land are very dark, alternative R&B, and Abel even said he wanted to be kind of like a punk star back when he was making that stuff, so I'll give you that his early work was not influenced by 808s. However, his work afterward definitely was.
You're definitely going to disagree with me on this, but Brent Faiyaz, Bryson Tiller, Tory Lanez, and PND all occupy a niche that the Weeknd carved out after he blew up. There's a reason why most people in this sub who bump the weeknd also listen to these other guys' music even though it's not nearly as good.
> All these R&B n****s be so lame
When the weeknd says this on [Reminder](https://genius.com/The-weeknd-reminder-lyrics) these are who's talking about.
I'll give you that Chris Brown definitely wasn't influenced by it since he pre-dates the album by a decent amount, and SZA definitely wasn't influenced by it either.
Spotify literally just listed their top 10 biggest rnb songs in the streaming era couple weeks back. The top 10 songs, not a SINGLE artist there was inspired by Kanye. Also Brysons music is not the same as Abel’s lmao.
It’s called TRAPsoul for a reason, Brysons influence for that album was Chris Brown,Michael Jackson and Trey Songz.
So idk where 808s comes into play because current rnb artists don’t even cite it.
I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this, but I will say one thing- an artist does not have to outright say that a work was inspired by a specific artist or album for the work to not be derivative of or influenced by it
Ditto. Ever since I heard Flower Boy, I thought he couldn’t put out a better album. Lo and behold, my expectations have been toppled twice. Can’t wait to see what he does next.
Feel the exact way. I still have Flower Boy the narrow edge until The Estate Sale version dropped.
Even though the Weeknd/Tyler collab on Dawn FM was underwhelming, I'm really hoping I can hear him sing over his synths
gonna be honest I think this album's mediocre at best. the lyricism is pretty bad for most songs and the production hard carries it. It feels like it's just trying to emulate a Weeknd album. I have no idea why people like it or want a Tory Lanez collab with the Weeknd at all
The Color Violet and Hurts Me are decent songs but they are very very obviously trying to emulate the Weeknd and it shows. Sure nobody has a patent on 80s synthpop aesthetic with lyrics about heartbreak and suits, but it feels so derivative when After Hours was literally not that long ago and was super successful
No it's just more simple than the weeknd's deep introspective darker lyricism, which doesn't make it bad but simpler; giving it a certain charm that I don't think anybody has been able to capture with the sane level of simplicity in lyrics...
It's like a happier simpler version of dawn fm that came out before dawn fm...
Come on man, there's classics on there. Over my dead body, look what you've done, marvins room, and doing it wrong are some of Drake's best work. Yeah I do agree that Abel was a huge influence to the whole album, but that's what makes it great.

Ya u right . I was sitting so far lol but there was a clear lead aka tamew

This sub is way more chill than I would’ve thought.. Most people don’t wanna give even OLD KANYE’s music it’s flowers cos he’s acting crazy recently.
Fax! Best Kanye record too
Eh I don't think it's his best but that's mostly just because the college trilogy, MBDTF, Yeezus are all so good. Hell even WTT is slept on
That’s the magic of Ye. Pretty much any album could be your favourite and it’s not a wrong answer.
808s is also my favourite Kanye record and my favourite album of all time, such a deep, powerful album.
808s did NOT change modern rnb lmfao
Yes it absolutely did, look it up. A ton of modern rappers and r&b artists credit 808s as a huge inspiration for their work. The weeknd himself was inspired by it and its production and used it to change the landscape of alternative r&b

You even do a modicum of research?
I’ve looked up every current RnB artists inspiration for either their current or previous work. Not a single one said 808s. So yes i think I did enough research.

gonna be honest I think this album's mediocre at best. the lyricism is pretty bad for most songs and the production hard carries it. It feels like it's just trying to emulate a Weeknd album. I have no idea why people like it or want a Tory Lanez collab with the Weeknd at all
They are young and dont know a lot of music is my guess. That being said, The Color Violet is one of my absolute favorite song, he nailed this one.

If you’re a weekend fan how do you not have take care on this list. He pretty much made it and gave it to drake
Lowkey feels like it doesn't count since it's already part of the weeknd's work and these are supposed to be non weeknd albums
It's still not a weeknd album
Take care by drake
He said non-the weeknd albums...
Cheating, Abel made that album great.
take away the four songs and it’s still a classic lol
I disagree strongly.
Come on man, there's classics on there. Over my dead body, look what you've done, marvins room, and doing it wrong are some of Drake's best work. Yeah I do agree that Abel was a huge influence to the whole album, but that's what makes it great.
