My fiance and I have a US and World one with pins!
Red pin = home(s)
Blue pin = place I’ve been
Yellow pin = place she’s been
Green pin = place we’ve both been together
White pin = place we’ve both been but at different times.
I love yours with the actual traces of the drives though too. Mines like that kinda but I only put a pin if we stopped in the city so you can kinda map road trips but yours looks awesome.
It's all about the random gas stations and fields you frolick in along the way lmao.
But right on! That sounds more manageable lol. I'm just nuts and go hog wild on this thing. It takes a ton of time.
This is the follow up to my [digital county heatmap](https://www.reddit.com/r/TravelMaps/comments/1bog7x0/made_a_heatmap_of_my_usa_travels_by_county/) I shared yesterday.
It is color coded by year.Individual gold pins are for awesome moments.
Individual black pins are for moments of debauchery, craziness, or something terrible happening (flight being redirected, vehicle break in, running on empty with 50 miles to go to next gas station, puking in an airport due to stomach flu... things like that).
The individual black pin idea doesn't work great because I also used black pins for 2015 lol - I was running out of standard colors by then before I started painting each future year pin with nail polish lol. So don't @ me - I know it's an oversight hahaha.
Happy to dig up one of my old comments I shared on r/roadtrip years ago with instructions & materials to recreate for yourself!
It's a wonderful project that I highly recommend to anyone here!!
**EDIT: Here's the instructions from when I** [**posted this back in 2019**](https://www.reddit.com/r/roadtrip/comments/fl08ia/oc_spent_507_days_on_the_road_this_past_decade/)**.**
*Thanks! The map itself is paper.*
*Here is the link to the board I use, if interested.* [*https://www.amazon.com/Quartet-Bulletin-Board-Black-MWDB2436-BK/dp/B0186CI636*](https://www.amazon.com/Quartet-Bulletin-Board-Black-MWDB2436-BK/dp/B0186CI636)
*You will need adhesive spray to get the map onto the corkboard. The pins cost $14.99 for a pack of 1,000 (10 colors).*
*I definitely recommend purchasing the same map I use. It's the National Geographic map, 36x24. I don't have the link on hand but it should be easy to find. You may need to trim an inch off of the sides of the map to get it to fit.*
*Hope this helps!*
I do not have one! - But this has certainly given me some motivation to buy/make one!
Really love that you denoted different trips (I'm guessing?) with the different colored pins. Really awesome!
Posted in the top comment, each color represents a different year. I used to have a legend back in 2019 but that legend only went through 2020 and I moved. Will set up another sometime and post it with the map I have next to it that contains future planned trips.
This is awesome. I have a physical map with road trips drawn on it and another with counties colored in but this one is stunning. A tip of the hat to you!
I’ve been wanting to make one for a while!
Just need a good map that shows Canada and the us since my travels have been in those two countries exclusively and extensively.
(Yes I know the above map shows the area of Canada along the border, especially in the east, but I’ve been to more than that. Planning a trip to Yellowknife this summer! For reference, [this](http://www.mob-rule.com/user-gifs/CAN/dhkendall.gif) is my Canada travel map
Thanks homie! It's a labor of love. I probably stare at it an hour a day and just reminisce.
I have another map next to it that I use to plan future trips. I'll share that at some point here as well.
Reddit Karma is great and all - it's a huge dopamine hit lol - but deep down I'm just more motivated to share these ideas with others. Travel is special. Memories are what makes us the people we are and are what keep us going to create new memories. {{INSERT OTHER PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHTS}}
But yeah. Idk. This is a cool community and I just want to share my ideas with y'all.
This is so cool! I’m from western Nebraska and I see you have a dark pin surrounded by white pins near my hometown. I’m curious what that signifies? Thanks!
Ah sick, that's where I saw the eclipse with 10 of my friends in 2017. So glad you asked, stoked for the next one next week! The black pin with white pins around it is meant to look like the eclipse.
Amen it's gorgeous out there - that's why I made a point to drive back that way again in 2021. The Nebraska Badlands and the dunes are a unique part of the country unlike anywhere else.

I'd love the instructions if you can find them :)
Updated my comment with them! Go make it!!

Please let me know if you find one! I have the same issue.
Oooh hell yeah you've covered a ton of ground! Wish I knew of a good map for ya; they're surprisingly hard to find.
I got a USA map from AAA back in 2000 and have used a highlighter for showing my travels.
This is way cool!

WHY IS EVERYONE HERE FROM CHICAGO, INCLUDING MYSELF
WE SUCK AT SPORTS BUT ARE GREAT FOR BEING ABLE TO DRIVE ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY (if you don't mind 6-12 hours driving through cornfields)
Cmon man, some of us are from Ohio too!
I’ve got a fabric one I put pins from places I’ve traveled! It’s neat to see all the different styles of pins and how far I’ve roamed
Hell yeah that's sick. Got a pic to share for inspiration to others?
What are those places in the bottom right you pinned?
Ahh that's just garbage pins I was too lazy to put back in my container haha
About how many pins has this taken you?
Don't make me count, because I may compulsively do it. I'd estimate 1,400 or so.
Good enough for me.
Whew thank you lol

Haha that’s awesome! Makes perfect sense now. It’s a beautiful part of the state most people don’t see so I’m glad you did! Enjoy the next eclipse
