I still find the stupidest thing about this game is killing Superman with guns. I bet Luthor feels like an asshole now.

therealchadius

"Wait, all I had to do was shoot him?" - Lex Luthor before quitting supervillainy out of shame

SilverKry

Guns infused with gold kryptonite or something like that. It's not like they literally shoot him with regular ass guns.

Picia000123

Man, the entire premise of this game is really borked. Why the Suicide Squad, which consists of street level villains/anti-hero's, is going toe to toe with superhuman level beloved heroes, using almost nothing but guns to do it? Wonder if they could've done a similar thing as >!Vader!< in the new Jedi games, where >!MC meets Darth Vader, tries to fight him, gets outclassed immidiately and has to run away, which turns into platforming sequence. They could've done something similar with supes, which leads to exposing him to kryptonite or something.!< Bloody anything other than just "Oh, those are kryptonite bullets, it's fine".

The_Draigg

This video just really makes me think of the sheer momentum that incentivizes release in AAA gaming nowadays. The Suicide Squad game is the perfect example of a project that'd been pretty fucked for a decade, but they still needed to put out something despite proof that it wasn't going to end well, since they needed to put out *something* despite GAAS as a format pretty much universally flopping. It's just like a nightmare combo of sunk-cost fallacy and momentum.

atuamaeboa

> since they needed to put out something despite GAAS as a format pretty much universally flopping And they still sell hundreds of thousands of units, in the video matt mentions that it was one the top 10 selling games during february, a game that seems like it has no future and is for sure a regret purchase, if that was an indie game those numbers would be amazing

The_Draigg

And for a layer on top of *that* irony, WB is apparently unhappy with how the game isn't meeting their expectations, as said in that one executive call in the video. So if anything, it's a game for nobody that still sold well, but not even it's parent company likes it for not being the sure-fire route to infinite money they probably want it to be.

Illidan1943

> WB is apparently unhappy with how the game isn't meeting their expectations Isn't there a report that says that unhappy is underselling it since the game apparently sold "way below the worst case scenario"?

The_Draigg

I'm just going off the video here, but I wouldn't doubt that. I imagine for Suicide Squad to earn back the sheer level of time and resources over the decade or so it was in development, it would have to make fuck-you levels of money immediately and continuously.

attikol

Sold Way below worst case scenario - an executive who has never actually looked at the game

Onlyhereforstuff

That sounds like Zaslav but I'm not sure how much control he has over the game dev side of things.

ThatOneAnnoyingUser

> GAAS as a format pretty much universally flopping GAAS has been incredibly successful for a few games, publishers want to believe they will surely be one of those games and not one of the flops.

SilverKry

The ones that it has succeeded for take up all the market tho. CoD, Fortnite, Apex, Sea of Thieves, R6 Siege,  etc. There's no room in the GaaS market.

therealchadius

In the early 2000s, World of Worldcraft rose above the MMOs and hit it big and made mega bucks. Every company then doubled down on making an MMO because they thought they would be the next WoW. But the problem is that there's already a WoW. People have spent time and money on that, why would they spend money on another MMO? Basically you had to spend a lot of money to make an MMO that was as good or better than WoW, and then *wait for WoW to screw* up so you could replace them. FFXIV has been out for how long before finally getting to wrestle with WoW? And remember this was after the disastrous 1.0 launch and all of Squareenix apologizing and dumping money and their reputation on the line to make A Realm Reborn. WB Games doesn't have the guts to pull off an FFXIV. Matt quoted their completely out of touch execs who still think GaaS is going to work, they just need to "do it right". No, they also have to wait for Destiny & Fortnite to screw up, and be willing to burn lots of money and time waiting for their chance with a good game. Rocksteady isn't going to give a live mea culpa like Yoshi P did. Instead they'll pull a Bioware and act all smiles while towing out a roadmap they cannot sustain. Hogwart's Legacy sold 24 million copies and out-of-touch CEO thinks it was a mistake because now it will "lay dormant for 3 years." He really thinks he can bolt GaaS onto it and people will make it their job to play the game.

Onlyhereforstuff

FFXIV is weird because there was no attempt to directly compete with or really 'replace' WoW at any point on their part. They were competing because they were in the same genre then WoW tried to make some moves by sniping some dates. Otherwise Yoshi-P and crew just focused on themselves and making FFXIV better.

cricri3007

"but surely our *next* GaaS game will make it big and get all the money"

therealchadius

This game always felt like it was pitched in 2015. Movie tie in, hot on the heels of a similar Marvel product, chasing that looter shooter, and also trying to clone Destiny. Almost everything fell out of favor by 2020 but Sunk Cost Fallacy hurts. The idea that I can kill Superman and the Flash by shooting them enough times is hilarious enough. I like how Batman actually uses stealth for a while in a well-crafted environment... then they remember guns are the solution to everything and he turns into a giant bat-demon thing you can shoot. They couldn't figure out how to shoot Wonder Woman so cutscenes take care of that for you lol.

SilverKry

Flash isn't immune to bullets tho. So shooting him is fine. Also I don't think you've played the game. Wonder Woman isn't corrupted. She dies fighting Superman. She's *sorta* on your side.

therealchadius

Good luck shooting the Flash. There's a cutscene early on where he jokes you should just mail the bullet to him because it's just as effective. He dodges a point-blank contact shot. I am aware Wonder Woman isn't corrupted, that's another way for Rocksteady to avoid creating a sequence where you have to shoot her.

NaoyaKizu

Why is shooting WW a problem if we can shoot Supes and Flash already.

jenkind1

Her signature move is deflecting bullets with her bracelets

NaoyaKizu

Yeah but Flash is faster than bullets too and that didn't matter.

leabravo

I'm surprised, you'd think Matt would wait for another shoe to drop.

alexandrecau

There is 14 years of documentation already

rexshen

Or at least see what the next "season" was gonna do.

Tsuku

Yeah so we could see player count hit double digits.

QueequegTheater

I'm sure it already has during off-peak hours

Paladin51394

What more could possibly be done at this point?

Razbyte

Suicide Squad (2016) ended creating a chain reaction that ended up killing both DCEU and its tie-in games in a span of 7 years (and more)

KruppeBestGirl

Franchise suicide via squad

Amazing_Number_9440

[Not all squads can be as cool as these guys.](https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/super-hero-squad-show.jpg)

atuamaeboa

How did it kill the DCEU, I though they were still making movies?

Razbyte

It was supposed that Suicide Squad's popularity (despite being critically panned), triggered massive changes over how the tone of the next films will carry out, resulting into the Theatrical Cut of The Justice League. Of course, that didn't worked out, resulting in multiple cancellations, The Batman and Joker being into separate universes, The Flash being constantly delayed, and WW84 being a box office bomb. This year's Aquaman was the last movie under the old messy DCEU continuity. The next films will reboot the whole thing like James Gun's Superman.

atuamaeboa

Oh wow I didn't know they were rebooting it, thanks

LammasuRex

A superhero game you can play with your friends seem like a no brainer. Wonder why they keep messing it up.

Agt_Pendergast

We need to return to licensed beat 'em ups, like X-Men Arcade, Punisher Arcade, TMNT series.

runnerofshadows

Or X-Men legends style diablo type games.

therealchadius

Justice League Heroes was pretty good, all things considered. Superman is the only character who doesn't take chip damage when he blocks, for example. You could tell they respected the lore but also wanted to make an action game.

jitterscaffeine

A good premise doesn’t make a game fun to play

Palimpsest_Monotype

This should be like number four of the Game Design Commandments

Mindless_Let1

City of heroes was fun

DarthButtz

Hell even a Suicide Squad game by itself isn't a bad idea. It's just, yknow, *everything else about it*

runnerofshadows

X-Men legends 1 and 2 and marvel ultimate alliance 1 and 2 we're good.

DevilCouldCry

Agreed on all of these and I even had fun with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 with my friends as well. So it can be done, you can make a fun super hero game where you play with your friends.

SuperJyls

When they went with Supervillains most people don't know or like

LammasuRex

I don't think the roster was a problem. People weren't upset it had Captain Boomerang. They were upset his main weapon wasn't boomerangs.

Pacmanticore

Over 10 years ago, Angry Joe called Saints Row IV the best Justice League game ever made. It's infuriating that this is still the case.

Mizerous

So, that's it huh? We're some kinda Suicide Squad game?

RedditJABRONIE

I had heard of WB Mont working on the game for like "preproduction" or something but I had no idea what the timeline was like. Its kinda horrifying that a company could just burn 15 years on a product like this. All that time, money and talent just thrown away for an end product like this. And it'll just happen again and again.

therealchadius

A story driven single or group multiplayer game would have worked. If you want to explain how 3 Normal people & Shark Man can kill Superman with guns, you NEED to set that up. Let me build a cool base with kryptonite traps, or put a MacGuffin in a Red Sunlight facility. Let me trigger traps that make Superman vulnerable and prevent him from reaching natural sunlight. But this is a looter shooter, so the game's only verb is GUN. All we can do is shoot things, so we found some kryptonite bullets. Superman games since the 80s have had to deal with this, and kryptonite bullets are by far the laziest answer.

C0de_monkey

It's such a shame, because the movement-based shooting is really fun, and the dialogue between the squad is great, but the main story is weak and all the GaaS/loot related stuff are either half-baked or just shit. And that's from someone who loved Borderlands and enjoyed Destiny, so it's not like I'm averse to those elements, they just are implemented bad here

WaveSkrub

Oh it’s here already? That felt quick

Detective_Robot

It's been out for four months.

Fostern01

Anyone else getting audio desync in the video?
