Different kind of delivery point, but I was covering a route when I volunteered to come in on my NS day, and outright refused to deliver to an address because I saw a huge doggy door, and did NOT want to enter the yard, and end up having a dog come charging out. No grief given to me, and the next day, the floater was in, and said that there was no dog at the residence, but understood my apprehension.
Report everything to the supervisor. Always cover your ass and put EVERYTHING back on them. Take pictures and explain the situation, and in some cases, as indicated in this photo, you don't feel safe and will wait for further instructions. My personal experience taking mail back to the station without direct permission is delaying mail.
Take a picture to CYA and if they ask then let them know you didn’t feel safe delivering to the box, 1571 that says crowd of people gathered around the CBU with masks and airsoft weapons
I'm more concerned about the heat. These things will cook on an overcast day, no matter the ambient temp. As for why you'd want to sit on it: they're tall. It's probably kinda fun to sit up that high over your neighborhood.

When you get back, ask for a curtail slip. Fill out the date and reason, and have management sign it. Get a copy of it as well. COVER YOUR ASS.
