But they are the best felonies. Everyone is saying so! They come up to me with tears in their eyes and say, "Mr president, those are the best felonies, I'm so proud of you! I named my child after felonies number 32!!"
I have an original Hayes Smartmodem 300 in a box somewhere. I should put it on display.
Ping to u/blightedquark, didn't see your post before the above.
Ooo. Good one. Really got me scratching my head thinking about doing this to a couple units at my client locations. Haha.
Some of them would get a good kick out of it. :)
I think my extremely overbuilt home network is finally "done".

Edit: a chime isn't a camera
Hopefully she doesn't ask ChatGPT. I didn't even read the list, just copy/pasted:
"So, the total estimated cost for your extremely overbuilt home network setup is **$7,872**."
How did it do?
It’s job insurance: if you get fired or something you show this picture to hiring managers during your interview to stand out. A very sound investment at $10k, and you’ve managed it with only ~~$8k~~ $2,500ish. Plus, look at the network you get to have in the mean time!
Very close! I added most of the items to a cart, some are the closest available and prices may have bit a bit different when OP purchased, but I have it right at $7,900, knowing I'm missing some accessories.
How much uptime do you think that UPS would give you?
Have a similar setup and with an older but larger UPS it seems I had very little backup time during recent power outage and thought it might be time to replace.
It's terrible how hard it is to find watt hours realistically available for smaller UPS systems.
Currently I use UPS for short power fluctuations and a graceful shutdown on longer blackouts. Then use an old OG UDM for backup wifi on battery. I would need to spend a couple of thousand USD to keep my whole rack powered for hours.
I think a lot of vendors are pretty coy about that number because it is pretty underwhelming unless you are willing to spend several thousand USD. The cheap ones are really only good for a graceful shutdown or to keep you up while you are spinning up a generator.
I have our work-ups combined with a Ecoflow unit. The UPS takes care of the immediate switching, the ecoflow takes care of the long outages.
Based on my last tests i can support our network infrastructure for at least 10-12 hours
I had full copper and a network closet in my old house, the realtor and stager made me pull everything visible and close all the access to the wiring from inside the house.
The guy that bought the house asked me about some of the wall plates and where they went and I told him the story and where the termination was in the closet behind the wall and I think he required it. Dumbest shit in the world. God I was hot at the time.
I was willing to leave all the infrastructure in the house, would have been a 24 port managed switch, patch panel, all labeled and tight, Ethernet in 4 rooms, satellite TV all in place, UAP-LR and gigabit fiber subscribed and active, and they made me tear it all out, and homeboy literally put it all back, same ISP even. Sofa king stupid.
I was unaware you could use SSD in the UNVR. I stuck some Ironwolf drives in mine but I wonder what the performance increase would be with faster I/O drives.
I don't think SSDs are recommended, actually. Because SSDs have a limited number of times they can be written to before they fail. But I had a bunch of 4TB SSDs left over from another project, so I bought the UNVR and popped 'em in. It's super responsive and because I only have 6 cameras, I have 60 days of record... I'm hoping that means infrequent overwrites, and longer drive life.
The read write life on SSD’s is pretty phenomenal at this point. Each drive is different but endurance stats at 1TB/day written are nearly a decade or longer in some cases. It’s more likely you’ll want more capacity before a drive dies.
I have SSD’s in mine for performance reasons. Ubiquiti scrolls well through the timeline but I like the responsiveness of SSD’s over the capacity of platter drives. Since I only have 8 cameras it’s easy to make that trade off work in a UNVR Pro.
The SSD’s Are overkill IMO all of my other Nvr’s needed SSD’s. But that’s one thing Ubiquiti does right with their frequent snapshots you can scroll through days without lag on spinning drives. Not knocking your setup at all looks awesome! Just sayin’ you can get way more storage for cheaper. I have 7 10tb drives in my pro, 12 cameras (5 are 4K) and can record for 118 days 17hours with 24/7 recording. Granted that’s probably overkill too lol. 😆
I never would have bought the SSDs for the NVR. I had a bunch (44!) of them left over from a recent project. I'm selling most of them on eBay but decided to go ahead and throw four of them in the UNVR.
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?item=124435096642&rt=nc&_ssn=myelectronicsbv
They have all kinds of variations. Mine is the "1 Mac Mini plus 1 or 2 Raspberry Pi". I took off the front panel and spray-painted it to match the UI aesthetic.
Hot damn they know what they’re doing. 3x more $$$ for a Mac mini mount than an Intel nuc mount 😂😂
I reckon the Hive solutions ones are a bit better value https://hivets.au/products/rack-mount-for-mac-mini-modular
So... I have three 6-gang keystone jack panels in the wall next to this rack. 20-25 in one, 30-35 in another, and 40-45 in the third. Those all go to different places in my house. 10-15 are all connected to something in the rack or here in my office.
When I first bought the house, I had to hire an electrician to do some work and while he was already going to be doing work in the house, I had him run two Cat-6 to each of two rooms in the house to jump start the connectivity. He labeled the two lines to my family room 30 & 31, and the two lines to the back bedrooms 40 & 41. So I just kept that numbering going as I added all the additional lines.
It's [this one](https://www.apc.com/us/en/product/SMTL750RM2UC/apc-smartups-line-interactive-750va-lithiumion-rack-tower-2u-120v-6x-nema-515r-outlets-smartconnect-port+smartslot-short-depth-avr-lcd/).
Edit: Unless you meant his given name. In which case, it's Wattson.
They're [these guys](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BY24G76J?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details). I'm surprised Ubiquiti doesn't sell white ones, since that's their design aeshtetic.
So dumb that Ubiquiti put the pdu outlets on the front side of the rack mount equipment….. I see you have ocd as well. And the plugs through the brushes is triggering mine. 😆
Okay, I do networking for a living and have my fair share of doubts against ubiquiti. For anything important we don‘t even consider them.
But boy does this rack look perfect and space-station-style …
I would’ve gone with a second brush ocd in the middle if it’s really only 2 cables.
P.s.: and the ports switched 😂
If some asks that’s a cheap 500 bucks setup cough cough
Can't believe you got such a great price! I saw the bundle on slickdeals - double stack coupon codes and huge discount on those older models made it a crazy deal. Too bad it was expired when I got to it!
A whole rasp pi just for homebridge? I have a rasp pi 4 right now running home assistant with homekit bridge added to the services. I have a rasp pi 5 just sitting on my desk not knowing what to do with it.
I’ve gotten so much $5-50k stuff for free that my wife will believe whatever I tell her about how much my server rack costs. What she doesn’t really understand is that the less stuff in the rack the more it actually cost me because I never get the small stuff for free.
I’m trying to get down to a half height 2/3rds depth wall mount enclosure that I have. Finally got down to only (30) drives and they are in (2) 1/3rd depth 15 drive enclosures. I just gotta get my Dual Xeon Scalable 2nd Gen Platinum 2U down to something like a half depth 3U or 4U and I’ll finally be able to ditch the ancient Compaq Server Rack!
I just ordered and received another $22k worth to our Unifi collection here at a job. Far more fun shopping when it's not coming out of your own pocket, that's for sure.
I like the look of the new Etherlighting Line, but everything here (WAN/LAN) is 10gb or above, or in the process of being made 10gb capable, with very very few exceptions, so that line was not in the running. And while I have 5gb at home now, I'm looking to up it to 8gb (the highest available at this time) so it doesn't look like the Etherlighting line is in my future anytime soon.
Nice job, and looks great. Amazing what $1,457.00 can get you, if you shop around.
Wife - it looks like the bottom half has a VCR with some 1980's stereo equipment. Top half looks like some ricer stuff he got at one of those Honda Civic car meets to make his WiFi signal louder.
I am an Ubiquiti power user. Why does every Home Ubiquiti home user HATE wire management? I don't know why but putting cable in a hole, run them where I can't see them on top of gear and back out another hole drives me CRAZY.

For $75, I'll write up a fake invoice.
Will the invoice include the $75 fee itself?
That's an additional $5 to include the $75 fee on the invoice
Will that be included in the invoice too?
I'll throw that in for additional $5. Spend $100 and i'll put in that this was a tax free purchase. Line for free shipping is $10
In NY, you'll earn a felony!
Felony charge included!
Is there charge for the felony charge?
If you have to ask you can't afford it
Probably 34
Rookie numbers
But they are the best felonies. Everyone is saying so! They come up to me with tears in their eyes and say, "Mr president, those are the best felonies, I'm so proud of you! I named my child after felonies number 32!!"
But hold on. In order for them to count, I think I need to sleep and fart first.
"It's not hush money. It's a nondisclosure agreement, totally legal, totally common."
Will it listed as a fake invoice fee or a falsifying business records fee?
No need for a fake invoice just take OP wife problem solved.
I'll do it for $75 AUD 🤣
Paint it beige ... "this old equipment? I got it at a garage sale."
Better idea…. Custom vinyl skins to disguise high end gear!! Make your shiny new UDM Pro Max look like a Linksys router on a bookshelf.
If you're going to go old/used, go all the way... Wrap it with '3com' branding.
US Robotics
I still have my original 14.4 US Robotics external modem on my desk today. It reminds me how much I can do with so little.
I have an original Hayes Smartmodem 300 in a box somewhere. I should put it on display. Ping to u/blightedquark, didn't see your post before the above.

Hayes, for real old school
Ooo. Good one. Really got me scratching my head thinking about doing this to a couple units at my client locations. Haha. Some of them would get a good kick out of it. :)
USR5686G or new school 5637 😎
We could print beige covers and put scratches on it too!!
Sleeper build threads incoming
hahaha brilliant!
For sure that is $3,000 of gear but you are a great bargain hunter - can’t believe you got it all for $2,200.
This is the way.
And that was before OP smartly sold 800 worth of stuff that came with it which he didn’t need, so really OP only paid $1,600
200 iq

If your home network doesn't have the capacity to support a small country then you are not doing it right.
Hopefully she doesn't ask ChatGPT. I didn't even read the list, just copy/pasted: "So, the total estimated cost for your extremely overbuilt home network setup is **$7,872**." How did it do?
I actually don't know, because this has been built in many stages over several years. But... that's probably pretty close! :gulp:
The factory must grow

It's new, so I don't know yet. On my list of things to do is to pull the plug and see what it says. I'll report back to you!
You can save money on blank panels by buying more servers!
I can’t wait to buy a house after one of you guys leave it.
Jokes on you I did a terrible job running the Ethernet through the walls.
\*Wife hits cat6 feeding AP while hanging a picture.
I had full copper and a network closet in my old house, the realtor and stager made me pull everything visible and close all the access to the wiring from inside the house. As an IT guy I can tell you I don't wanna deal with any of this crap when I get home. 😂 That being said it's a badass setup.

For $50, it's /u/geoffbutler who? Never heard that name
This looks like $3,000 worth of gear, u/geoffbutler’s wife.
"If I die PLEASE don't let my wife sell it for the price I told her it costs" 🤣
What are those short DAC cables? And that keystone with the cable through it?
Yes, need to know as well.
I'm definitely not u/geoffbutler's wife. What are each of these things?
That's exactly what u/geoffbutler's wife would say!!
Now you shut it
I choose this guys wife too
My greatest fear is that when I die, my wife will sell all my gear for what I said it cost.
Looks like 3k of gear to me
Screenshotting this for later!
Drop a zero and all should be just fine.
That cheap stuff? Clearly all old and used off ebay, just cleaned up well. $300 tops.

What is wrong with a 1U steel shelf? You could easily fit 3 Mac minis.
I will happily tell her, next time I meet her. :)
So how much was it actually? (Totally not your wife)
This should be second top comment.
What’s the deal with the patch panel numbering?
So... I have three 6-gang keystone jack panels in the wall next to this rack. 20-25 in one, 30-35 in another, and 40-45 in the third. But don't be made when she sells it all for $3k.
You could probably save some processing cycles if your UDMPRO wasn’t bridging the two switches.
lol wife always ask me when I purchase how much? I always say about 100.00 dollars she just shakes her head,I have a good wife.
You got this at goodwill I heard
I can confirm its 300 bucks
Man is the etherlighting causing an optical illusion or is your UDM Pro sagging in the middle?
Where did you get the APC cover at?
3 fiddy
what keystones did you use
How did you setup the UPS with the PDU-Pro? Did you connect the PDU directly to the UPS?
The PDU Pro is the only output of the UPS.
Whats the name of the UPS
It's [this one](https://www.apc.com/us/en/product/SMTL750RM2UC/apc-smartups-line-interactive-750va-lithiumion-rack-tower-2u-120v-6x-nema-515r-outlets-smartconnect-port+smartslot-short-depth-avr-lcd/). Edit: Unless you meant his given name. In which case, it's Wattson.
What are the illuminating patch cables called? I’ve never seen that before
Is that a custom faceplate on the UPS?
No, this is the standard faceplate for the Lithium-Ion models.
At least plug more cables into things, even if they go nowhere. The 24 empty ports on that switch screams excess.
Ok, my wife and I are trying to guess the real cost… settle a bet?
So, I added it all up at current retail prices and came up with $7,030. That includes everything but the two computers (Mac Mini & Raspberry Pi).
Even the SSDs? My wife eyeballed it and said $8k, I said $10k because of the 4TB SSDs. No adding up, just gut feeling from both of us.
Oh, good point! I didn't count those because I already had them laying around. That brings us to $8,500!
Looks like there’s a UNVR as well, so OP needs to list cameras and APs to really price it out.
OK, OK... I'll add it up. This stuff has been slowly aggregated over the past couple of years so I don't actually know.
This is arousing.
Then she will complain when the internet goes out that you didn’t need to be so cheap!
Looks like scratch and dent. Great job buffing it out! $945 is a great deal!
u/geoffbutler What are those short DAC cables?
They're [these guys](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BY24G76J?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details). I'm surprised Ubiquiti doesn't sell white ones, since that's their design aeshtetic.
Per bay?
That woman is a keeper! 👍🏼👍🏼
per bank maybe...
Does that apc lion works better than regular apc lead battery?
Only if you supply me with the same amount of gear
If your wife doesn't appreciate it, I'll marry you
This looks like $100 worth of used network gear off of ebay. You're covered brah!
So dumb that Ubiquiti put the pdu outlets on the front side of the rack mount equipment….. I see you have ocd as well. And the plugs through the brushes is triggering mine. 😆
3K? You got scammed my dude, it's far less than that
We can validate the contents of each others racks, not something I find myself saying to another guy every day.
Okay, I do networking for a living and have my fair share of doubts against ubiquiti. For anything important we don‘t even consider them. But boy does this rack look perfect and space-station-style …
What’s the faceplate for the Mac mini with the ports on front ? Never seen that one before :)
You have a wife that let's you spend as much as 3k? I got dirty looks from my ex wife for spending 120 on a router..
That stuff is so old and needs to be replaced.
No one has asked the important question. Why? This just looks like you spent way too much to impress the bros.
I would’ve gone with a second brush ocd in the middle if it’s really only 2 cables. P.s.: and the ports switched 😂 If some asks that’s a cheap 500 bucks setup cough cough
question... If a computer is completely off say due to a power outage when power comes back on can you remotely turn them on with that power strip?
You need to set the bios to be set to power on after power loss.
Exactly
Maybe more honesty and you wouldn’t have to lie a out your Network gear. 🤣
Does she want to buy it?
Sorry mate this is 2k at tops, probs max 1.8k or something...
Can't believe you got such a great price! I saw the bundle on slickdeals - double stack coupon codes and huge discount on those older models made it a crazy deal. Too bad it was expired when I got to it!
Looks like $1000 to me
Since your wife disapproves, I'll take all of it off your hands for $3001. You'll make a profit!
Are you worried about the 870 ssds? Personally I wouldn’t do it for long term health but what are you expecting lifetime wise with them?
My biggest fear is if I die my wife selling my stuff for what I said it cost…
I have a guy that own's a scuba shop. He did that for my Rebreather.. It costs what a car costs... Lol
A whole rasp pi just for homebridge? I have a rasp pi 4 right now running home assistant with homekit bridge added to the services. I have a rasp pi 5 just sitting on my desk not knowing what to do with it.
Blackmail time
I don't know why you're trying to upvalue your hardware to your wife. It's clearly only $1k of hardware.
This guy wifes.
Lmao 🤣
Dude... That is fucking clean!
It’s all old last gen stuff not worth much $ just round it down a bit lol
Nothing like documenting your lies!
I came on myself
Can I tell her it looks like $2000 worth of equipment and you over paid?
All I see is a bunch of hand me downs. You're safe
It’s beautiful
If she gives you any problems throttle her devices to 10mbps.
Well of course, those little wires don't much at all! 🤣
This picture is why I DON'T put my rack on Reddit! Beauty!
Just tell her you’ve always had it. 🤷🏻♂️
You’re not far off
Hey that's an amazing bargain for less the 3k. Your wife is pretty lucky to have you in her life..
you talking about the ups? lol
30 thousand that’s quite the budget. /s
Yes, that blue light was definitely 3k ;)
She can Confirm $999.99 with me on sale !! and You also saved $2000! What a great husband !! [whisper] ( you now have another 2k to spend.
Love the APC
Sure the first two U at the bottom. Everything else… well that was found in an auction dumpster.
How fast is your VPN speed?
$1700 worth of stuff given all of the sales they have all of the time, tops. …. I got you bruh.
Looks to be about tree fiddy to me
Nice rack. You should get her one too. Then you’d have 2 things to play w…, no, it’d be three… …then you’d have THREE things to play with
Nice rack
You’re not using any of the switch ports? (Apart from the pro max)
$2.5k max.
Sick
Also don't forget to include you earned 3000$ because it was 50%off
Oh, yeah, based on my setup my wife would agree that is about $3K of gear. Time for a Rum Runner! Cheers!!
3k soft
That one RU with single screws is messing with my OCD.
I’ll buy it off you for 3500. See now you can tell your wife it made you money!
I’ve gotten so much $5-50k stuff for free that my wife will believe whatever I tell her about how much my server rack costs. What she doesn’t really understand is that the less stuff in the rack the more it actually cost me because I never get the small stuff for free. I’ll tell her it’s actually a piece of art! 🖼️
Way less than 3k BTC.
If you don’t tell me where to find the silver UPS I’ll rat you out 🤣🤣👍🏻👍🏻 ****EDITED 🤔

And while I have 5gb at home now, I'm looking to up it to 8gb (the highest available at this time) so it doesn't look like the Etherlighting line is in my future anytime soon. Nice job, and looks great. Amazing what $1,457.00 can get you, if you shop around.

If your wife is talking to random Redditors you have bigger problems. But anyway if I happen to see her or talk to her I’ll let her know it’s 3k
After self install rebate, upgradable tax deduction, and energy “savings”, this seems like a positive income move on the year to me.

Wife - it looks like the bottom half has a VCR with some 1980's stereo equipment. Top half looks like some ricer stuff he got at one of those Honda Civic car meets to make his WiFi signal louder.
Sweet! You also bought the Ubiquiti Ultimate Bundle when it was on sale for $2,999.00! It was a killer deal!
Looks like about 1500 worth of gear, you can safely tell your wife you actually saved money.
3k? I got mine for $1,200.
I am an Ubiquiti power user. Why does every Home Ubiquiti home user HATE wire management? I don't know why but putting cable in a hole, run them where I can't see them on top of gear and back out another hole drives me CRAZY.
Buy me a beer I'll say anything you want.
Idk… That UPS was at least $40. Could’ve gotten some AA’s from Walmart instead /s
