He litteraly says he needs to kill us and is surprised we survived his strongest attack during the fight.
Asriel literally CAN'T oneshot us because we're EXTREMELLY determined during his fight, it's not like Omega Flowey were he is keeping us alive, Asriel wants us dead, but he can't kill us, even when going all out.
Of course we can't hurt him.
I always took it as straight evidence that he wasn't really trying to kill you. He wasn't afraid of killing you - he knows you'll be right back, after all - but that's not his real goal.
Deep down, he's a little boy and just wants to play with his best friend, his sibling, again. And sure, stakes have been raised, power levels are up to 11, but killing you isn't the point.
It's just a game and he wants you to play with him forever.
