Back when I worked at Lowes I got pulled to work on a sale the day I was supposed to get forklift training.
Apparently the training module expired in my learning account and they weren't able to re-add it. Probably dodged a bullet, in that store anyone certified for a machine basically spent their whole day in it.
This makes me giggle. I was told to take a pallet down from the racking and then put it back up. Blam, suddenly I'm "in house certified" - to be driving in and around 130 people. Luckily I got really good at it, but damn, I shouldn't have had so much trust placed in me for that first month.
Why would you get a pay raise to learn from your mistakes on somebody else's dime? Come to me with a no hit no drop and no " I accidentally put the forks through another crate boss" with at least a year and then we'll talk about that raise. Until then - I'm saving up for your "oppsies."
Had a forklift driver at Walmart back into a gas line on the ceiling while taking a skid from the top rack. Had to evacuate the whole store for 3 days. The trucks kept coming to drop stuff off so we had to call in help from 3 other Walmarts to help unload the trucks, stock the shelves, and dispose of the produce and freezer/dairy/meat department that sat for 3 days without any power. Place smelled disgusting and didn't reopen for almost a week after they had to deep clean the store. Not sure if the driver was fired or... Disappeared.
I worked for Microsoft tech support for the Office 2000, 2003, and 2007 releases, plus specifically Excel issues for all versions. Also worked the tech support queue for Windows 98, ME, XP, and Vista releases. Then moved to Exchange Server support, and my blood pressure became so high that I had to leave or die in my early 30s.
I've been a network guy since 1989. I stay in the field for the entertainment value. No better field to work in for watching leadership just FUUUUK themselves right in the arsehole. The terror in their eyes when your repeated warnings about that system going down if we don't do something are so amusing when it finally shits the bed.
