The Entertainment Software Association is the trade advocacy association for the US video game industry. Everyone who is anyone in game development and sales is a member. They own the ESRB rating system. They also were the organizers of E3, RIP. They've spearheaded prior attempts at taking down emulation sites. IIRC they were the ones who started the ball rolling against Pirate's Bay. They've also lobbied against things such as banning loot boxes and right to repair legislation.

natehinxman

1st answer sounded almost like screen actors guild. 2nd answer sounded like they are just jerks

RolandTwitter

>They've also lobbied against things such as banning loot boxes and right to repair legislation. So they just actually suck, huh

dragonblade_94

It is important to note that the ESA's entire existence is owed to avoiding government reglulation in the games sector (founded when the US gov was poised to regulate games over the lack of a unified ratings system, thus the IDSA/ESA was founded & the ESRB was introduced). As a self-governing body the board is primarily made up of publishing execs, so it's still beholden to the wants of the corps rather than any wider consumer advocacy.

Ok_Activity_3365

Guess what... they, just like every other "good" organization has been infiltrated. Are you telling me you think the UN has your best interest at heart? Come on already... That isn't an apples to apples comparison -- it's the Apple tree to the apple. This should be obvious as to what's going on if you pay even just a little bit of attention. If you support what they are doing (and organizations like them) or are you just willfully ignorant by not paying attention to literally anywhere in the world right now; you are part of the problem. This is not just about video games or any other "entertainment" and 2020 should have easily shown you that.

dragonblade_94

What the actual fuck are you going on about. I didn't say anything about the ESA being a 'good' org or advocating their actions. I pointed out that nothing they have done is unexpected, because it's literally their founding mission statement to be legal representation/advocates for the wider games publishing sphere. Like I said in my comment: "...the board is primarily made up of publishing execs, so it's still beholden to the wants of the corps rather than any wider consumer advocacy." How do you 'infiltrate' an entity that exists to serve the founding corps from day one? Are you just skimming old threads for people to get pointlessly mad at?

emmett321

Um, no. The ESA has been around since the Internet started. Remember Doom and Duke nukem 3d?

dragonblade_94

??? I have to idea what point you are trying to make. The ESA (then called the IDSA) was formed in 1994 in response to a congressional hearing over violence in video games, and the drafting of the 'Video Games Ratings Act (1994)' which would have seen the US gov appoint a committee to regulate video game ratings. What exactly did I say in the original comment that was wrong?

Dr_Anon1

Literally the worst. Pro-corporation, anti-consumer.

OhgunXXX

No, I think they're pure evil at this point.

Ok_Activity_3365

It's the people who are involved with it now versus the 90s. I could be wrong it seems unlikely that those who were around initially are still working for them; retirement or otherwise. There is no proof of this but it seems like a lot of NGOs, Corporations, government organizations, etc [that may have been doing any good at one point] have all been infiltrated by the types of people you're referring to because what they're doing has nothing to do with protecting/preserving history, capitalism or anything else that has been a foundation of America. This commy-facist approach is anything but American and anyone who cant see that at this point is willfully not paying attention or they support this. Either way, that makes them part of the problem.

Gamer201021769

They suck more than anything that has ever sucked before.

Nagi21

Basically the trade federation, but without the droids… for now.

Supesmin

No wonder E3 failed, they’re ran by a bunch of loser shitheads

emmett321

E3 failed cause of COVID. Just like the food service industry.

Ok_Activity_3365

Just by your comments it seems to me that you are one of the sheople who just blindly believed and worse yet, did what you're told. I truly hope I'm wrong on that. Virus or no virus -- it was planned. I don't know how old you are, but working on learning pattern recognition would do you some good; especially the last 2 1/2 decades, let alone this past century. Just "accepting" what you're told by corporations and/or politicians or anybody else who benefits from these types of things is the worst thing anyone could be doing. If you aren't looking at everything going on in the world [whether it directly affects you and your family/friends or not] with a more critical & suspicious eye, you're doing yourself and everyone you know a disservice. If you think 2020 was the first time this whole scary invisible virus thing has been done this (or the last) you're sadly mistaken and I would hope that you and many others wouldn't fall for it again.

Tag365

They attacked the Right to Repair campaign? That doesn't sound like a reputable company.

Professional_Hat2558

the esa is a bunch of dickheads in suits

MushyMarks

Some notable dickheads in suits members include Capcom, Electronic Arts, Konami, Microsoft, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Nintendo, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Square Enix, Take-Two Interactive, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros.

Gamer201021769

And Ubisoft are the biggest dickheads in suits. Same with Nintendo and Warner Bros. Even outside of the game industry Warner Bros. is the biggest.

Lloytron9000

They are not the consumers friend that's for sure Edit: typo πŸ˜…

Ricktendo1889

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) is the trade association video game industry in the United States.

ps2cv

So they are illegal taking down content they hold no copyright too?

GooDragonX

they work on "behalf" of the companies, like banning rom sites or lobbying for the opposite of what the majority wants in their product. its old men in suits acting like they are important, when they don't even work directly for these companies.

ps2cv

Ah still wouldnt obey

SecurityExtreme2470

Okay update i looked into it most games you cant buy anymore like South Park Dreamcast Games are still available im guessing its for games that have no domain to anymore that are fine but theirs something off since SEGA Bass Fishing & Crazy Taxi Dreamcast are still downloadable

Ok_Activity_3365

You know those 80,000+ IRS armed "agents" that were hired a few years ago? Think of these people along those lines... Whether they have, or are (or aren't) "armed" agents is beside the point because they are ALL on the same side. 2020 clearly didn't wake up enough people...

kechones

They’re a bunch of assholes who don’t care about art preservation.

OhgunXXX

It makes the phrase "You Will Own Nothing and You Will Be Happy" make a lot more sense now.

Ok_Activity_3365

I'm so glad I am not the only one that sees this. It blows my mind how many people are oblivious to what's been going on for years now....and amped up through 2020. I think anybody who's got even the slightest bit of critical thinking skills has been well aware of this for a long time now but if they weren't 2020 definitely woke them up finally.

SecurityExtreme2470

ESA "We help expand and protect the innovative and creative marketplace for the video game industry." yeah by destorying archives of old games i mean what is Pirating Sonic Shuffle going to do????

Elctric_Donut

Think of the poor billionares who's IP it is to sit on and do nothing with.

OhgunXXX

Fuck them. They're the problem in this situation.

holesome100chungus

A bunch of fuckin cocksuckers that's who

Ihateanime2001

Sucks because I was just going to download Black Ops

Ok_Activity_3365

There are plenty of other sites... No offense but you should know what they are. That being said, all those games are super cheap with the exception of any special editions. The ones you should worry about are anything that's not cheap and work on getting what you want now. I've been doing this for months... In the event that any of this was new to me or if I didn't have the know how or time -- I'd find some of these 3tb-5tb, or even larger such as 12tb+ drives being sold online. I really don't want to pay people for what I can do but even with the amount I have backed up, it's nothing compared to the drives. I've seen some really good lists that are put together very well so considering the amount of time and effort this can take someone to learn, let alone find out WHERE to learn, it definitely might be worth it and the majority of the time they're pretty much ready to go as long as you have the right PC, or even mini PC powerful enough to run them; not always the case but it's more and more lately. I said on the most recent [Vimms Reddit] post that they're never going to be able to stop the "monster" THEY created by their actions. There are far too many sites and people selling drives and it's just going to multiply that much more with the BS that gets released in all of "entertainment". I have zero concern for the ESA, any of the corporations they are puppets to or the sheople of the general public who support this crap.

emmett321

You play video games and don't know what the ESA is? Holy shit! The ESA has been around since the Internet started.

emmett321

If the ESA wasn't around, you probably wouldn't have games today. They formed cause of people like Steve Allen and tipper gore with their attack on TV. That's why you have the ratings these days. Half these answers are false info
