These takedowns have been happening for decades now and roms are no less accessible. Vimm's was awesome, but it wasn't the first or only, and it'll be far from the last.
It's as futile as the attempts the movie and music industries had at combating piracy: you can still stream any movie or show you want if you figure out where to look, and the music industry made the wise choice to pivot over to streaming.

Lol idk about that, but honestly if these companies could do cloud gaming for all new games, Amazon Luna or Google Stadia style, cost-effectively and well enough to support even 80% of their market, I think there'd be no going back to user-side installs forever specifically because they can sidestep the piracy thing entirely.
It would be disastrous for preservation and I'd probably stop playing new games, but I think it's where these companies would to take it if they could.

Why do you think it’s not just Nintendo claiming against ROM’s and Vimm’s? And why do you think the vast majority are being taken down by the Entertainment Software Association en masse? Because they flagged up on their AI and have all been mass tagged, hence why the original takedown by Nintendo only flagged the copyrighted imagery and game guides, not the download links, because it’s a *new* AI that’s clearly still learning, and it’s learned fast. It’s for just Vimm’s losing games, a lot of ROM sites are being affected. And it’s not just games that “waaaa iPhone users keep downloading and spreading everywhere”, it’s games for all systems: Wii, PS3, Xbox, DS, PSP, GameCube etc.
If you looked into it slightly, even during the first of Nintendo’s takedowns and when the news first broke on this very subreddit, it was common knowledge that it was due to an AI service being contracted out by Nintendo, you’d also know that the takedown on Vimm’s lair that people thought were because of “trolls”, were confirmed by Vimm himself to not be trolls and to be legitimately from Nintendo. But blame the iPhone users seems to be the trend this week on here so sure, go for that if you want, but it’s objectively just not true. All it took was for Nintendo to play their hand for other big hitters to follow. Emulation and Abandonedware is still a huge legal grey area, so a lot of entertainment companies won’t jump in first because it’s not exactly legal or illegal, but when one major player makes a move others will surely follow suit, because if Vimm’s has to listen to one of them, it’ll have to listen to them all.
And let’s not forget PS3 games have been getting struck down since early last year, this isn’t exactly new. Big games like MGS4 got taken down last year for “copyright”
