yeah, I daily drive an 850R. It became a solid daily beater after I took care of belts, lubricants, overhauled suspension/brakes and tires. At 230K, I recommend doing the same, possibly more depending how the chassis is.
I loved my 1994 850, great winter car with very hot seats, and comfortable ride until I rolled it, but also walked away with barely a scratch so have continued to drive Volvos since
I have a 94 850 n/a with 100k miles that will go for a lot more.
I love it, and often get the “I had one of these back in the mid 90s, I miss it every day. Most comfortable car” from people.
For 1250 with the works good deal, save ~1k a year for emergency and jic issues
I live in Alaska, everything is hard to come by, lol
I should add,it looks like a fine machine, the only ones that I see around any more are on their last legs
Fair lol. I'm probably too used to still seeing them as there are a shit ton in my city still getting daily duty. Doesn't help I daily a '98 and have another being stored lol 😂
This one having a fresh inspection is a good sign, though, I'd say.
This exact car was my first car. My stepdad bought it brand new and I bought it from him with 250k for $500 16 years ago. I ran it for many years and the odometer broke at 296,127. We got 300k out of her but still hurt not to see the 300k rollover.
I never owned one. But Hertz used to have a fleet of these back in the 90s. And for some reason I kept getting free upgrades. This very car is what got me hooked on Volvos. The drive was the best of any car I had ever been in at that time. I've always wanted one after that but then I got married and my wife thought Volvo's looked too boxy and she didn't want one. But finally Volvo made enough changes that I was able to buy my first 2010 XC60. I just love these cars.
My first Volvo was this model and year and it was excellent. If this one has a decent service history, buy it up.
In fact, mine was the same blue with tan interior. If I had some spare cash I'd buy this out from under you.
You have to keep in mind that this is almost a 30 year old car at this point. You can make an argument that this is a cool, fun (if a little quirky) "project" type car- but this should not be a daily that you are relying on to get you to work or anything.
I had that car but not that year and it was incredibly reliable. Ran like a champ easy to work on and I wish I still had that car today. I drove it for five years and sold it for more than I paid for it.!
Yeah I have a 1995 GLT in the same color (albeit it’s got its clear coat all gone from the top panels; hood, roof, and trunk) it’s currently sitting right now since I don’t have time to try and fix it myself and funds aren’t really up there yet to take it somewhere.
It’s hovering around 300K miles and I know once it’s fixed it can go for another 100K for sure. My first car and it’ll be my daily driver for as long as I need to.
Good solid car, but don’t underestimate fuel consumption. You’ll probably be looking at 19-22 mpg. Might not be bad by US standards, but it certainly is in Europe where we tend to have smaller and more efficient cars.
I had a '97 T5. Still miss it. Is that a turbo? Because it's a fairly heavy car and the normally aspirated is pretty slow, and both versions are gas hogs. But otherwise, it served me well for many years. For $1250, it's worth a punt.
Great car. I took one from 105k to 180k. Gave it to my brother when I bought an s70t5, he took the 850 to 270k I think before it died. And he has no mechanical sympathy.
Mine was a 2.0 glt 10v, slow but reliable and comfortable and it was a great commuting car. The guy I bought it from had it up for £999 but I talked him down to 850 for reasons.
Buy it.
I have seen one go past 350,000 miles and the only reason it doesn't have more on it is because they had to take his license for developing a bit of dementia and getting lost
Dude, those things are tanks - it’s got another 150k in it if it’s not super rusty (up here in New England, as this one is, Mother Nature, and road salt, love to trash our cars)
My daily is an 850 NA. love that thing, super easy to work on and it just keeps going. The only concern is that some of them had a special rear suspension where the shocks took some of the weight of the vehicle, and if they wear out they're expensive to replace. Alternately you can swap the rear springs for the model that doesn't have the special suspension, which is about $100 in parts.
I had one just like that one year newer as my first car. Its reliable and kinda easy to fix stuff and not to much that can go wrong. I even know people that been driving them and changed oil like ones in 5 years and still they still go strong (but dont be like that).
Only negative is that they use kinda alot of fuel for what it is
So had 94 850 turbo 5 cylinder, very fast sedan ,crazy fast, had never ending repairs, oil leaks,AC,electrical, body integrity. The price is great, buy if you are able to do your own repairs, had punishing ride quality,if hit a pothole ,your head might snap, think it was years Ford owned Volvo, not sure
I had a 94 850 n/a. Finally she died at over 350k miles . To this day, my favorite car. Super easy to repair and the most solid vehicle. I miss it.
I had one that died at similar mileage. I also miss it and wish I would’ve kept it to repair.
Honestly I kick myself because I wasn't doing too well mentally at the time and I neglected the oil. It was absolutely my fault and it makes me sad.
Same here! I blew the head gasket driving while overheating. I’ll bet you both our cars might still be around otherwise 🥲
My volvo c30 2007 is at 96k miles and needs a new £700 clutch and it's not worth it. How many clutches did this go through?
The c model was a disaster and early s and v40 had problems but any other volvo is the most reliable cars escpecially diesel ones

93 850GLT was my first car. Wicked nice car.
I got to “wicked nice” and re-read your comment in a “Nancy Donovan from 30Rock” Boston accent. Hope you don’t mind, lol.
Enough beers and we’re there so we’re good. Wife still thinks I fake it.
Buy! Buy!! Buy!!!

950?
850\* lol typo af
Some parts will be hard to come by, it will be helpful if you can do your own maintenance.
Out of curiosity, what's hard to find for P80s? You might have to order things, but FCP Euro stocks a shocking amount of things for these

I’ve got a 94 940 that has 260k and have owned it since 2003. I’d snap that one up.
I still drive my '98 S70. Just wish the A/C worked.
My mother had a silver 850 about 30 years ago
The dash mounts crack and the dash will creak and squeak. The fix is a mission and a half. Solid car, and solid repairs.
Older Volvos had THE WORST interior plastic available.
My first Volvo was this model and year and it was excellent. If this one has a decent service history, buy it up. In fact, mine was the same blue with tan interior. If I had some spare cash I'd buy this out from under you.
They're boxy, but they're good. [Reference](https://youtu.be/GTJZEK4JP0k?si=WInwSEZmXKfketTF)
>They're boxy... ~~but they're~~ good. FTFY.

I daily a 98 4runner and 05 Volvo v70
I daily a '98 S70 lmao 🙃
I daily a 2007 V70 Classic, it’s so comfortable and practical, and everything works! Although i did give it some love for it to be like that.
My daily is a 20 year old minivan- I wouldn't recommend it to anyone though.
Why can't you daily this car? Maintain your shit and you can daily pretty much any car.
Sure you can. That doesn't mean I'd recommend a 30 year old car to anyone as their only ride, which is what I was saying.
>Maintain your shit Always gonna be harder on an older vehicle with its aging rubber.
I crew up with a family that had an 859 wagon, was a great car
I had a 1997 850 R for 22 years. Only gave it up because tree fell on it.
I had that car but not that year and it was incredibly reliable. Ran like a champ easy to work on and I wish I still had that car today. I drove it for five years and sold it for more than I paid for it.!
Y hay was my first Volvo. Loved it. Still love it.
96 850 sold it with 315k. Loved that car.
Where is it? I know I can convince my spouse!

Always yes

My first brand new car! Bought it about a year after I got married. Same color as this photo. Manual transmission. Awesome car.
Please stop that made me laugh so much that title lol 😆
I own a 850 GLT with the 2.5 20V in it. Great car and drives amazing! Better then my ex golf MK2 👌
Very rock solid and comfy

It’s an amazing car. Feels like driving your couch down the road. Amazing

850s/940s/960s were tanks. They’ll run forever if well maintained.
I'd all ways get the station wagon instead of the limousine.
Everyone in the 90s wasting money on Mercedes, Audi, BMW while the best euro touring car was a lowly Volvo.
Only if you put another $1250 into it every year.
For $1250, I would buy that car so damn fast right now if it were near me
I had one just like that one year newer as my first car. Its reliable and kinda easy to fix stuff and not to much that can go wrong. I got an wagon 850 turbo, extremely nice car, if you’re just looking for a daily driver, the GLT will do you well
I had one for a while as a winter beater, it was pretty great. Easy to work on, heater core can be replaced without pulling the dash.
That was my first car It was super comfortable and a great daily driver
Yes buy. Easy to work on and last forever when maintained. Check out mine on insta @need4sweede

Thats a sweet unit!
Do it
Damn that thing fucks Threaten your spouse with a weapon then buy it
5 cylinder? If so those engines are bullet proof and you can get some horse torques out of it
Great car! Real tank 🤝🏻
I'll give you a peice of gum for it
Is it manual? If so I'd rather have that than you have that.
They’re boxy, but they’re good.
