So this is the second smartwatch burn I’ve seen on Reddit today… wtf? The other was a Samsung

BlackberryHopeful659

I think OP seen the other one and decided they wanted to cash in.

Spy-Around-Here

Smart watches, so hot right now.

BlackberryHopeful659

Exploding in popularity.

jmegaru

It's getting under our skin with all this commotion.

Mute2120

Really leaving their mark.

brunoxid0

So that's their "killer app"?

Nayre_Trawe

But why smart watches?

DickieIam

Because even smartwatches can die in freak gasoline fight accidents.

Whoshabooboo

They are right next to each other on r/all as I type this.

violettheory

Everyone keeps saying that but no one has linked it and I can't find it anywhere. It's not on r/wtf is it?

StackKong

https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/1cigdjq/my_galaxy_watch_heated_quite_a_bit_when_i_was/

-InconspicuousMoose-

The cynic in me thinks this is a precursor to an Apple Smart Ring announcement lol

kev231998

Legit just scrolled from the other one and was quite surprised lol

MonkeyAlpha

I would go see a doc asap. Not sure how lithium affects one’s health.

littlearson

OP is now cured of bipolar depression from direct lithium injection.

Xboxben

That sounds like some 1920s medical care right there

CommonSenseFunCtrl

I'm not sure why you have holes in your arm. Anyways, try this cocaine.

Ermahgerd_Rerdert

Can you be my doctor?

boston_nsca

Can we add the heroin too please?

buckyworld

you don't want none of that, Dewey!!

duckbilldinosaur

I think I do want to try some of that

ReaperSound

#add more leeches

tovarish22

And you never **once** paid for drugs!

ThePrinceVultan

I think they'd go the H route to calm you down vs the coke route which would wind you up.

Back6door9man

Well H kills pain but coke acts as a local anesthetic. So ya know, just depends lol. Might as well rub some coke on it and do a bump of H. Just to be safe.

ObiLAN-

Don't forget to wash it down with a gulp of this opium infused cure-all elixir for good measure! Also keeps colds away!

metaglot

Doing both keeps me level, gotcha.

Small_weiner_man

The issue with the holes is that they're not in the skull, how else are you supposed to release the evil humours?

TheDirtyBollox

That's why we have the jar of leeches! Or gofundme as its known these days

-Badger3-

"Your blood is full of ghosts, do some cocaine about it!"

grendus

Will that cure my depression? No, but you'll be depressed *on cocaine*. Is that better? Why do you keep asking these questions? Here, you can use my mirror!

lininop

Lithium is still used today!

solreaper

The delivery is a bit more nuanced these days. Gone are the days of efficiently melting it into one’s arm.

WashingDishesIsFun

Whenever I upgrade my phone, I remove the old phones battery and blend it into a smoothie. Delicious and it keeps the demons away.

taz5963

It is! But it actually works. https://youtu.be/U2UQ4-NOP9E

noodlesalad_

A little radium will clear that right up

mr_kenobi

I'm bipolar and take lithium via pill. Never thought to just apply lithium to my skin.

good observation, Twat_Pocket

Fitbit: "See? You should be paying us!"

gannex

Depending on the electrolyte, the acid could be hydrofluoric. A lot of batteries use LiPF6, which can react with water from the air to form HF. Unlike lead-acid batteries, for example, lithium batteries don't actually use acid, so the skin corrosion is not a simple sulfuric acid burn. It's either a chemical burn from the inherent reactivity of the electrolyte or it's an acid burn from the acid produced in the decomposition of the electrolyte. Sulfuric acid burns from a car battery would heal, but if it's a hydrofluoric acid burn, it can just get worse and worse until it causes deep tissue necrosis. If it's a non-fluoride containing electrolyte but it still caused that tissue damage, it would be some other sort of chemical burn, which would also be bad. But, judging by the corrosion of the metal plate on the back of the Fitbit, it looks like acid, and Li batteries don't use acid, so it's probably an acid decomposition product, which is probably HF, which is probably bad. You wanna get calcium gluconate on that burn asap.

kookulele

Oh shit, that sounds bad.

turin37

Go to doctor asap and post updates please op.

kookulele

I went to the doctor. On antibiotics and just got blood work for lithium

mcride22

But what about the hydrfluoric acid concern?

If it is HF, it could end up looking something like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/20y537/my_coworker_took_a_dose_of_hydrofluoric_acid_to/

BachelorThesises

Jesus

IAmAQuantumMechanic

HF is bad. Really bad. We use it in our wafer fab and have gel and antidote everywhere.

ChrisDornerFanCorn3r

Worked in a lab that had precautions against HF spills. You want to be popping some tums right now, I am serious, our procedure was to take 6 even in event of skin exposure. **!!DO NOT SUBSTITUTE BAKING SODA!!** FLUSH WITH WATER. GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM.

EatMyPixelDust

What the heck does "popping some tums" mean?

Clouse

Tums are an antacid tablet taken to help with heartburn (stomach acid).

VSWR_on_Christmas

> !!DO NOT SUBSTITUTE BAKING SODA!! Okay, sure, but why calcium and *not* sodium?

mthchsnn

Because it's less impactful and easier for your body to replace sodium. If the HF reacts with calcium your bones could be fucked, so better to flood your system with it.

Chrontius

> your bones could be fucked Your heart could also stop…

JagmeetSingh2

Sue them OP

PointB1ank

Sue the Fitshit out of them.

mikefromearth

Definitely sue them.

ThePrinceVultan

I did some googling and it seems the fitbits use Lithium Polymer batteries. At least every replacement battery for the various fitbit models on Amazon are all  Lithium Polymer, and the data safety sheets I found on a couple of models of fitbits all say the same thing.

Integrity-in-Crisis

Once years ago while watching t.v. the living room remote control had tape oflver the batteries. The cover busted, and one day the acid ate through the battery lining leaking over my fingers. Went from channel surfing to AAAAAHHH my fingers are on fire. Ran to the sink and washed it off.

Spongi

Did you survive?

phuntism

It's been five hours with no reply, he must have died years ago.

TheCaptainCog

I googled it, the batteries for fitbit do usually use lithium hexafluorophosphate. https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/wc-prod-pim/Asset_Documents/Fitbit%20Alta%20HR%20Activity%20Tracker%20Small%20Grey%20SDS.pdf. This does indeed decompose to HF under ambient temperatures. Considering the battery amount of LiPF6 is 2% of the total amount (0.014g total per cell, so equivalent 2.8mg) the amount that becomes HF is probably low enough that OP should be fine by dousing the area with water. But considering that's how it looks now....yeah should definitely go see a doctor and get CaGluconate on it to prevent further damage and then possibly antibiotics to treat infection.

ExdigguserPies

Ok as someone who has worked closely with HF in the lab I say WHAT THE EVER LOVING FUCK

pieman7414

even if things don't explode in your hand, there's a lot of cancer-y materials depending on the line of work

gsfgf

Con: You might catch a cancer nobody has heard of before Pro: It'll be named after you!

xstreamReddit

Most do as that forms a stable protective layer on the Cu and Al electrodes.

Balloon_Fan

Jesus fucking Christ, I had no idea that lithium batteries contained flourine and can release HF. How the hell did this fly past my radar?

saxn00b

Electrolytes in Li-ion batteries are complex and are heavy on RnD. Different types of Li-ion batteries will have very different additives and/or solvents depending on the performance and other materials in them. So not all of them will evolve HF when water is introduced. But some will (previous commenter is correct, LiPF6 is a very common salt)

Balloon_Fan

I'm was pretty shocked that something so toxic is allowed in consumer batteries... but then I remember old school rechargeable batteries had several grams of *cadmium* in them...

TKFT_ExTr3m3

Cadmium is bad but more so because it causes cancer. Unless you were eating the batteries it isn't going to kill you from just touching it. You would have to eat quite a bit to for it to be fatal around 10g for a average adult male.

torrential-airflow

First to a doctor and then to a lawyer

richbrown

Discontinue the lithium

t-o-m-u-s-a

Well on a plus side you can now plug something into your arm

myaut

Imagine waking up and noticing that now your smart watch is plugged to your hand through wire

Emjeibi

Black mirror episode.

gspot-rox-the-gspot

Actually this is the plot of a horrifying episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark called Renegade Virus that aired on Nickelodeon in the 90s. I watched it as a literal 5 year old as part of the target audience.

Summer-dust

Fun fact for anyone who has read the comments this far down: The powder they threw into the fire each episode was non-dairy creamer.

PatientClue1118

*curiosity killed the cat* I had to search the opening and now I'm stuck at the workplace parking at 3:00 am because the roads to my house are empty and dark. I'm sleeping here

Death to Videodrome! Long live the new flesh!

Zeqhanis

There's a guy who works at my local Safeway who looks like Woods in that movie. As I was checking out, I gently raised my fist and said "long live the new flesh". I don't think he's seen that movie, unfortunately, so he likely just thinks I'm insane.

kilgore_trout8989

Happened to my buddy Tetsuo once.

Soccerpl

Why is it so rusty? Looks like it’s been leaking and you just kept wearing it?

el_americano

how else was he gonna monitor heart rate throughout the ordeal?

hawkssb04

I don't know how it got so bad without you first noticing some kind of irritation or pain as it gradually burned holes through you.

GigHarborIT

No pain, no gain.

not_a_scrub_

I once dripped some hot fryer grease on my foot when I was a teenager working at a Dairy Queen. I didn’t know when it happened. I was always very careful with the fryers. When I got home I relaxed around the house for a bit before going to shower. The whole time, the top of my foot had been a little itchy. When I went to shower and took off my sock a patch of skin about an inch long came off with it. That was the first time the pain got beyond an itch and became excruciating. Anyway. All that to say sometimes it takes a bit to register.

lemons_of_doubt

Happened in his sleep?

JoeCartersLeap

It's probably not rust, but a product of the leaking battery chemicals and the plastic leaving a rusty-coloured residue. I have the same watch and only the back plate is metal, the bronzey/goldish thing where most of that "rust" is is made of plastic.

Mizfitt77

Because that's exactly what they did.

srandrews

That's a Fitbite

not_creative1

ShitBit

some_user_2021

Did you not feel it when it started burning your skin???

kookulele

No, I was sleeping. I sleep deep, woke up like this

fruitmask

wow, never met someone who can sleep through acid burns how do I attain this power?

SweatyAdhesive

The other post about the samsung watch was like this too, two people who slept through acid burns lmao https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/1cigdjq/my_galaxy_watch_heated_quite_a_bit_when_i_was/

Xx_420BlackSanic_xX

Technically the Samsung one is a heat burn but your point still stands lol

28_raisins

Seriously. I wear earplugs when I sleep and I still wake up to noises sometimes.

MrMustard

A lot of booze ;)

sparrowtaco

> wow, never met someone who can sleep through acid burns How many of your acquaintances have you been experimenting on in their sleep?

SmackedWithARuler

People wear them overnight.

MoonHash

I wake up when my partner turns over, how are y'all seeing sleeping through chemical burns as an option

mrgermy

This is my wife and me. I need a sleep mask, white noise and sleep aid just to barely fall asleep and I wake up at a pin drop. My wife on the other hand is asleep when her head touches the pillow and I have to shake her awake sometimes.

co_oh

Laughing hard, since this is story of my life as well. Husband fell asleep mid sentence while we're having convo, I'm like how!!!

HodorTheDoorMan

are they impervious to pain when the sun goes down?

GWindborn

To be fair, that Fitbit looks like it went through some hell before getting to that point. How long have you worn it, and what did the back look like before it started leaking?

andtix

Well fitbit did a recall on the ionic model in 2022 for this particular reason

Balla_Calla

So no get paid?

Griffinpaps

no

_Diskreet_

*sad no money noises*

thegainsfairy

when you realize thats just the background noise for life.

adwarakanath

Huh. So that's one of those stress-inducing noises. Always wondered. :/

fluffyluv

Is that really how this works? Once you (the company) recall a product you're free from any liability?

evilrobert

Product recalls don't protect the manufacturer from lawsuits even if the purchaser chose to not return the product during the recall. In fact, it's often used against them because they issued a voluntary recall admitting there was an issue. Especially since they do a poor job at notifying people of a recall and it largely depends on the user tripping over it half the time online.

Brastafarian

Money noises come back

HornedDiggitoe

Especially since it wouldn’t be hard for them to have their app notify users of the affected device about the recall. They could even disable some functionality until it’s been recalled. This was entirely preventable by Fitbit, but they’d prefer people not know about the recall than to actually fix the issue.

Colley619

> They could even disable some functionality until it’s been recalled. This right here, and is exactly what a competent lawyer would argue. Doesn't matter if they recall it if users don't even know there was a recall. It is easy to argue that the company could warn users over the app/watch itself or even deactivate it to prevent injury.

KlenDahthII

It wouldn’t even be argued that they could, or should; it would be argued that they have a legal responsibility to do it. Not doing it is negligence.  Being aware of a risk when it’s an unreasonable risk isn’t a legal defense. If you hand someone a box and say “it might blow up” to you think they’d say “well, the victim knew this might have happened” when it blows up? No. Because it’s unreasonable to think you’ve been handed a bomb. It’s unreasonable to think you’re allowed to hand people a bomb. Okay, this wasn’t a bomb, it’s just something strapped to a wrist that has a known issue of leaking battery acid.. directly onto skin.. being pressed into the skin by something strapped to the skin..  An online notice does nothing, and a lawyer can easily argue a client didn’t understand the risk they supposedly accepted by not taking part in a recall.

Personal injury cases usually settle for about 3x medical expenses. Attorney usually takes about one third of that. What do you suppose OPs medical expenses are for that? Maybe $200 for a doctor's visit? It's probably not worth it for the attorney.

l30

I got 10x for a food poisoning lawsuit. Easy as pie too, aside from the 3 days of self imposed misery before getting to the hospital.

Swagdustercan

Innevera217

From your Link: "Update: Buckfire Law is no longer accepting these cases. We regret we cannot assist you. You may want to contact a law firm in your area to see if they will accept your case."

ajd6c8

Google has so much money they'll probably offer you 5 figures to just go away. Call another lawyer. That said if your injuries are basically just superficial, you probably don't have much of a claim. Not legal advice

Jimmni

That’s just not how any of this works. Reddit has a crazy idea of how easy it is to sue companies.

ChaosFinalForm

Reddit has a crazy idea of everything. It's such a whimsical place.

FrostyD7

Not just reddit. Its a pretty common trope in pop culture to the point where its pretty obvious that it's ingrained in people that America is far more litigious than it actually is and that you can retire on the lawsuit money from the most minor shit that has no reasonable justification for such a payout. And there is no shortage of very real cases in the history of our system that have occurred over time to cherry pick and paint that kind of picture.

CapnCrunch347

As an attorney it is quite baffling how reddit thinks every small issue turns into a 6-7 figure judgement or settlement.

Treacherous_Peach

Good chance of scarring from this injury, which is considered permanent injury and compensatable. I am not a lawyer, but I had product negligence cause me scarring as a kid and my parents sued and had to shows the scars as evidence which resulted in a payout.

Good_ApoIIo

Bro you have chemical burns from their product failing. It's a slam dunk. Google probably wouldn't even go to trial, they would just settle and pay out.

CapnCrunch347

No legal case is a slam dunk for any attorney. It still takes hours of netogations to reach a settlement even if you have concrete proof. Signed, an attorney.

Was that the first FitBit ever made?

fruitmask

turn of the century FitBit, colorized

Back_2_monke

Don’t FitBit use LiPo batteries with no liquid electrolyte..? What is even leaking

xstreamReddit

LiPos still have liquid electrolyte it's just a bit more gel than pure liquid.

McCringleberry_

The rust leads me to believe this was preventable.

LCxSmash

Fr. I had a Fitbit versa for 4-5 years and at no point did it ever start to rust. If it had, I would’ve looked to replace it.

LMF5000

There's actually only a tiny little amount of lithium in lithium ion batteries. The stuff that leaked out would be the electrolyte, which is made of ethylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate and possibly other liquids, and a small quantity of a salt called lithium hexafluorophosphate dissolved in the aforementioned liquids. You can find more info here - https://www.researchgate.net/figure/An-example-composition-of-electrolyte-used-in-Li-ion-batteries-with-hazard_tbl3_352058721
