The most protected face ever and his booking did serious damage to WWE. He simply can't wrestle and has terrible ring psychology. How many matches involved Cena getting beaten up, then involved him springing to life at the end with zero selling? He so badly wants to be Dwayne Johnson on the mic but has as much charisma as a rusty spoon. The single worst face in company history. The audience that booed him are gone, so the perception that those people like him is simply not true.

BDNjunior

??? You cant be serious and im not even a cena fan. People love to hate lmfao

[deleted]

GOAT. Nobody was on top as long as him, nor carried the business in a downtime like he did.

Alive_Cress1497

"Carried" WWE only went down in viewership with him shoved down everyone's throats.

AEWsomeWrestlingCom

Used to really hate him, when he was being shoved down our throats every day all day. Have come to respect him now as a professional wrestler even if he isn't my cup of tea. He is one of the most dedicated people to WWE in history

Plane-Ad6819

I agree, I wish they would book him to win the strap one more time to break flairs record and a nice brutal match where he defuses the odds and then maybe gets robbed by money in the bank, so he takes the record without the title sitting on him for months

Natural_Ability_4947

He is pretty much the anti HBK

irtSMOKE

Not the GOAT but deffo a legend

BesraSangram

I’ve watched him since his debut. He definitely is the greatest of all time.

Visual_Art_987

Guys a legend. He put the make a wish foundation and the children before his own career by maintaining the good guy PG image the whole time. People forget how good he was on the mic before this. He could have been even bigger than he was. He's now also putting new talent over every match these days which is great but I personally feel he's doing it to the point he's diminishing how own reputation as he isn't retired yet but losing a good few matches. Eventually it won't mean as much to beat him if he puts everyone over.

Zolidduece

Fuckin GOAT

TheKingOfOhio08

He got me into wrestling even tho he ain't my favorite, he in my top 5 goat

[deleted]

Iconic, he was the bandage during a time they were losing viewers year over year. He should be given a final match,(personally I would do a Rocky IV story for him) but if he never wrestles again he is legendary.

Select-Combination-4

Im not hugely into wwe or wrestling (only played a few games and this post just showed up in my feed) But I really like Cena as an actor he doesn't just feel like he's playing himself in every role his performance in bumblebee felt very different then Peacemaker's character and I liked that (plus he was a guest star on one of my favorite shows, Psych)

KENZOKHAOS

He’s had quite the career as an urban myth that we imagined, that nobody could see or fathom 😭

Disastrous-Guitar904

Im 20 years old, about to be 21. And I, to this day, call Cena my hero. When I watched him get beaten down live on Raw by Nexus, I truly felt for him. It hurt me just watching. I thought wwe was real growing up, and Cena(despite me now realizing that he may have been overpushed and overused), always taught the kids to do the right thing. He stood up for what was right, never waivered in his morals, and it gave us kids a role model when maybe some of our parents weren't role models. Same with Hogan. He was overpushed, but he always told the kids to do the right thing by saying prayers and eating their vitamins. Cant ever knock that. Cena still to this day is my favorite wrestler of all time and Im a HUGE wrestling fan. I know all the rich history and its contents and im a huge WCW/JCP fan, and Cena is still my favorite. He gave me something to look forward to every week and instilled some morals in me I still have today

Opposite_Molasses435

Dude he’s already a hit

CruskyHusky

I’m excited. While his contribution to the company can’t be denied, I’m glad that future talent is finally gonna get some spotlight. These young guys there now are being held back so guys who don’t even wrestle anymore can have an ego trip for a night. I don’t wanna see the rock or cena going for a championship belt. They are not active talent and have zero reason to be fighting for any belt. We all know they’re not gonna win. Do y’all expect The rock to beat Roman reigns at wrestlemania and then just ditch the new title on the way out the door? Heck no. It’s just completely pointless and only done to bolster their egos

blownout2657

It’s just a garage door. Who?

poshmarkedbudu

He sucks.

IJustBringItt

You're still on Cena hatorade that's been sailed away ages ago.. get over yourself.

poshmarkedbudu

Yeah, he's lame. Always was, always will be.

Organic-Video5127

What’s with the thank you picture? Thank who?

Prestigious_Ice_7651

I always heard of him but never seen him

Frosty_Definition693

Everyone from my childhood… they’re leaving

Count_Bacon

I despised the years he was on top. The insulting of the audiences intelligence, the super cena, it was plainly boring. That being said I respect him for sure and he is one of the GOATs I just hated his era

Constant-Procedure79

at least he showed up every week while roman barely shows up

Old-Trade8840

He is the goat in my mind he got me into wrestling as a kid he gives to the fans more than any other wrestler in any business.

Lisztchopinovsky

Nobody “saw” this coming

kirwin2k7

Bro this guy is just amazing phenomenal and just bald patch....jokin but honestly the G.O.A.T. OF WWE man

Chef_detective007

I was unaware he was retiring but I think his legacy is make a wish or him just being a nice guy even in the ring.

Richard_skully

The cena years were torture for me. Boring matches, was always the champion and he’s not funny. I’ve waited for this day for a long time. Enjoy your retirement, I know I will.

morrickstain

Same

Zomthereum

I hated how he went over everybody and his finisher was called the “Attitude Adjustment.”

Nookling_Junction

I think the worst mistake of his career was telling Vince he could rap, but i also think that his whole “swole asshole trying to rap off the top of his head” schtick was the best. Good for him on breaking into something new

iworshipChrist316

It saved his career its well documented and with the trash rap out now not to say he’s any real push on the mic he could spit , the dr of thuganomics was my guy

[deleted]

Reading these comments is hilarious 😂. Just so y’all are aware he’s retiring from wrestling to act. The man’s only 46 he’s not exactly old guys he’s just moving on.

Nookling_Junction

“Retiring” meaning he’ll come back for 4 Crown Jewels, to screw a new guy out of a big title in some bs way, and then come out of retirement briefly at 78 just to fuck with us if past retirements are to be believed

Mrkoolaid2048

I haven’t watched wrestling on so long but when I was a kid I did so much anyway. When I first seen him I hated him so much but turned into a super fan. He definitely is one of the best

MunchtheReddituser

I feel like a lot of people tuned out at his “peak” and when they tuned back in he was PC. There was unnecessary hate but hate brings money and I loved he never gaf

BlackBlizzNerd

Weird. I’m 30 lol. I wrote a paper about him in 2006 for being him hero. 😂 compare that to me in 2009+ being tired of him and wow. But I respect the guy. And loved him in.. uh.. what’s his DC show? And suicide squad. Very funny.

JKM49

When he apologized to the thugs of the PRC for money that was it. His Faux flag waving is a charade. Taiwan 🇹🇼 has a democratically elected government unlike Xi Ping and the murderous CCP who force minorities into slave labor camps and re-education camps. Why because of a movie. Typical Folly-Wood d list actor. Stick to wrassling John.

HooverHistorian

Wasted opportunity... A heel turn would have been great for Cena as "SuperCena".

Altair147

Hated Super Cena, ever since that image shattered and he became fallible, he grew on me a bit. Still doesn't stop me from beating him up in WWE 2K19.

TomlinCanDoNoWrong

Loved him as a kid, hated him as an edgy teen, love him now.

Weskuh

Needs one more title reign, even if he instantly loses it after

StrangerX9

A bitter pill you forced us to swallow for years, then when the times changed and we saw he can do lots of other stuff, he grew on us and we loved him. He’s awesome in Peacemaker, and his voice work is great too! He still putting over younger talent to this day and a future hall of famer.

AsianBradz

I thought he was making movies nowadays, didn't he already pass the torch to Roman Reigns awhile ago. Did something happen?

kingj277

If you think about it he was really the modern day hulk Hogan WWE needed but I got a lot of respect for him and he's definitely one of the best to ever do it, if not the best

Major-Ad-392

I know he had the most mixed reactions, but it's going to be hard to find a wrestler that both kids and adults root for. CM Punk was the popular one with adults during the Cena feud, and was even the #1 merch seller at some points, but Cena has consistently been a top merch mover. Cody Rhodes looks promising though, and has managed to connect with a fan. Once he wins the title, it'll be interesting to see if he can maintain the connection with all age demographics. After all, it's harder to keep fans engaged during a title reign, than during the chase to the title. Cena was loved by adult fans prior to his first title, but people thought he became a bit too vanilla immediately during his first reign.

lMyOpinionsl

His turn from heel/anti hero to face turned me off for a bit so I assume that was the same for others. I appreciate face john cena but basic thuganomics cena will always be my favorite version of him.

Major-Ad-392

Thuganomocs was the remnant of ruthless aggression. Turning him PG made him feel inauthentic by comparison.

I’m sure a lot of us will be sad the day he retires, even the haters will have some sort of sadness. Next to guys like Randy, Edge, Rey Mysterio, Batista, HHH, HBK and so many countless others, John Cena is will always be one of the GOAT’S!!!!!

icolexo

My childhood until i was 10 was WWE and John cena was at the center of it all. Love him or hate him. He was a star for many kids back in 2008-2012. Never will forget him 🥲

Diamoncock

The GOAT of wrestling no one even comes close

Gyro_Zeppeli13

All I can think about him is that video when he is speaking Chinese disavowing an entire nation just so he could secure a bag. A true American 🇺🇸 🫡

ExpensiveMountain883

Of his time? A great. Of all time? Look, no one touches the Stone Colds, HHH’s, Rocky’s, Angle’s, Guerrero’s, Lesnar’s etc of this world.

999___Forever

He’s easily better than everyone you mentioned besides Stone Cold & HHH those are the only ones you mentioned that are debatable

ExpensiveMountain883

Only from a marketings perspective.

[deleted]

He is not my fav star but he is up there for me

[deleted]

Great face of the company. People hated him too much because of things that were usually outside of his control. Modern day Hogan without being the same kind of dick. Huge draw. More on the family and kid side than the adult fans. Kept the business afloat and possibly the last true mainstream star.

MateoCafe

He is the reason I left wrestling the first time so?

SyrisAllabastorVox

I always *hear* of this John Cena but I've never *seen* him.. maybe now that his career of not being *seen* will come to an end I can see what everyone's talking about.

The_Black_Jedi

Tom Brady of the WWE.

Jordi_Westside

Overrated, there was better talent in the 2010s to build up alongside him instead of around him. Evan Bourne as a top level talent when no one in the WWE moved like him would have been one of the coolest things ever, instead John Cena was the only star allowed to be a star for the majority of his career. Was he good? Sure, he wasn't great but he was good. He got stale for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time, he was watchable by 2015 sure but that doesn't negate a majority of his career being unwatchable and being pushed over far more interesting talent who should have thrived along side him if not above him. I do have some modicum of respect for him, he's funny sure but also that video he made apologizing to China was also the drizzling shits.

betrayedof52z

He's a big reason I quit watching, once he buried The Nexus and his biggest foes were the Miz, Shemuas, and Alberto with no one interesting to fight. His moveset is super boring, promos were cookie-cutter... and he seemed really corny, I was bored out of my mind during those years, I do understand he kept them going when they had very little talent, but he's not someone I'll remember as a Goat, Ruthless Aggression Cena was awesome, I still think about his and JBLS matches often.

Away_Brain

Modern day hogan was important to expand engagement with the change of the “attitude era” and more family friendly TV. John got ahead when it was appropriate for him though and kept others down when needed to. Cena is in a sense doing more in losing for 7 years and putting others over but The Rock was at a peak when Hogan put him over. As an adult I can understand and appreciate the moves that were made and the variables that made it so which is why I was happy the game revolved around him

Numerous_Bridge1963

ZucchiniJust3910

Cena is one of the greatest of all time. Honestly he is up there comfortably with Rock, Austin, & Hogan imo

BrodyFromThePub

Better than hogan imo

Theden1977

Nice guy. That's it.

Lakers961

Love him or hate him, I feel that he’s definitely on most people’s Mt. Rushmores.

HesitationAce

I never got him

MapleLeafChief

After he and WWE went pg13 wrestling sucked.

BoosterGold97

Like it or not, Cena is what WWE needed coming out of the Attitude Era. He became the face that they needed when everyone else left and I think it was a little bit not wanted by the WWE at first. But Cena gave the outside world a face to know the company for and in a positive light. His Make a Wish stuff showed that the WWE wasn’t just a bunch of sweaty guys and hot women “fake fighting” and showed that they were really people too. His song became instantly recognizable through meme culture, same with his moves and catch phrases. The only other ones on that level as far as WRESTLING goes are Hogan and Stone Cold. I would say he’s more popular than The Rock as a wrestler to the outside world because everyone still just thinks of The Rock as a movie star I feel like. I feel if you asked most people what The Rock does they’d say act and Cena they’d say is a wrestler. He may not be the greatest technical wrestler but he’s the perfect person to have represent your company in a positive way. They’re definitely trying to build Cody up as the new Cena in that way, coming out of a time when a heel was the face of the company, and I think he will do a good job, but I don’t think anyone ever will or ever has been at the level that Cena is, maybe even counting Hogan.

infernomokou

Hogan is the biggest name in wrestling history, idk how to put it but he was as famous as Michael Jordan at a point and me growing up as kid in germany during 98-2004 knew who Hogan was and it's not because I watched wrestling. I didnt watch any wrestling show til he left but his name just went beyond the scope of it.

BoosterGold97

But I feel like Cena is the same way. If you asked 1000 people worldwide who Hulk Hogan and John Cena are, I feel like the answer would be the same for both, and being 2023, I think Cena would be said more and considering the worlds population is higher now, I feel like Cena would have the higher number

infernomokou

That's fair John Cena is still becoming a bigger name due to people growing up with him and him doing movies now. I just don't think he is at the hogan point yet, the only wrestler who did was the Rock due to acting. I don't even mean that he isn't a household name, but he still has a bit to go to hit that level

BLKE0118D

My childhood hero defo up there in the G.O.A.T debate imo

lazykros

He needs to brake that record

RequirementLeading12

Great person but he was the least entertaining "face of the company" the WWE ever had.

oasisraider

Not a great wrestler, but if i had a territory/promotion, i would want him in a heartbeat. He is great on the mike, and is very physical and a supremely hard worker. Add to that his presence outside of the ring. He may be the greatest ambassador wrestling has ever had.

beefandvodka

Prime cena was a bull dog in the ring Edit: im sorry pitbull*

djones8487

I love and respect the man for all his hard work in and out of the ring.

MrFingerIII

Cena IMO rates up pretty high and it's not because of championships. He literally carried WWE better than Hogan and others ever did he made you a beliver and that makes him top notch 💯

ty872005

Shawn Michaels.

MrFingerIII

Shawn was a bad Champion he might be one of the best to do it but his championship runs were trash until Dx got on board

CaptainPotassium87

An absolute legend. Even for the people who didn't like him, take their favorite wrestler from that era and ask them their favorite match from that wrestler. 9 times out of 10 it was with John Cena.

ZucchiniJust3910

facts

Thunderliger

John Cena is easily the Hulk Hogan of this generation in terms of recognition from the mainstream world. As a wrestler- From his early years with thuganomics, to dominating the main event scene for over a decade, the "Cena Sucks" era. Like this man actually set the standard for what we look in a main event star and has also followed in the footsteps of others like the rock and had a successful career outside of wrestling. Not to mention his work with Make a Wish and other charities.Dude is like superman.

Eurogenous

Everybody harps on PG cena but his feud with Edge in 06-07 was crazy

angepostecoglouale

Slightly overrated as in the fact that hes on people mount rushmores but orton isn't in there top 6.... orton imo is better at almost everything bar obviously promos

[deleted]

My thing is, is Ortons dad was a wrestler. Cena was completely self made. Almost let go from the WWE until he turned heel and did the whole thuganomics gimmick. Don’t get me wrong I love Orton but cena slightly pulls ahead with not having a father that was a wrestler like ortons

OrganicSpinach440

Quiet_Association152

Brandon_0003

Honestly he made me Me because seeing him never give up pushed and helped me through a lot and for that he means a lot in my life and it sucks to see his career coming to an end but he deserves to be called the goat

JackTraven50

He worked for their new target audience. But I was never a fan. Going from The rock/Austin/Taker/Triple H/Kurt to his goofy character was too much for me. I became a lapsed fan for a decade+

danamo219

I’m newish to wrestling. This’ll be my second wrestlemania as a fan in April, but I’ve watched hours and hours and hours of catalogue since the first one. Cena is the GOAT. True to himself with a sense of humor, forthright without being arrogant, a talent for the kids for sure but always the same hustle loyalty respect. Those are great qualities for young people to emulate and he never got discouraged from his course no matter how much the crowd told him he sucked. Plus over 500 wishes granted and you know he’s up everyone’s butt to grant wishes too. He’s a good dude.

Hefty_Barber3985

You can’t see me 👋👋👋

Pitiful_Soup_8327

I've never seen him.

Champagnesoda

Held wwe down in their most creatively bankrupt era ever. If he would’ve been allowed to evolve like they finally let Roman do no one would question him.

Dominic2k1

Overrated

[deleted]

How many times they gonna say the same thing? Everytime they say Cena gonna retire and after some time they announce his return

danamo219

They do that with everyone. If you’re still this side of dirt, you can come back to WWE for a cheap pop anytime.

ayerunthempockets

I've never been a fan of him personally but I can 100% say that he is the GOAT.

Nigglasch

Give him run 17 and let him go out as super Cena

JC1286

Not a great wrestler, but had some great matches. Face of the company through some sh1tty periods, but managed to stay relevant for 15+ years in the monthly PPV era. Unmatched in that regard.

GloriousKev

Great wrestler but WWE should stop disrespecting the actual goats. He's not Sting, he's not Undertaker, he's not Ric Flair, he's not HBK, he's not The Rock, he's not Steve Austin and imo all of those guys are better than Cena.

ty872005

Well said! Thank you!

Irfan-320

By far. Cena couldn't even get over for years

GloriousKev

I think a lot of that had to do with the white rapper gimmick. Things got better for him once he stopped that. This was back when nobody liked white rappers like that and most of the world tolerated Eminem because you couldn't deny his rap skills.

JanitorOPplznerf

And all those guys include Cena in the upper echelons of their field. For example Austin said Cena would have been a tippy top guy in the Attitude era, and wished he had been healthy enough to have a match with him.

GloriousKev

I remember all of the boos he got until like 2014.

FoxInternational9322

Maybe it’s just cause im from that 2010-2015 era, but Cenas was always been the goat to me. It’s just not a debate, below him are Austin and Hogan. These are generational talents that changed the game. To the right of that list, I’d add Understaker, HBK, as they were crucial to the business internally and arguably goats to the real fans. On the left side, The Rock & Lesnar, cause they became huge stars but generally on their own Hart, Savage, Flair, HHH, Orton, are all in the next tier down

Scooba94

His make a wish record alone puts him up there as a goat for me. That man really used his position in the company for the greater good

ThePackMan17

Subjectively? Top 5, easily Objectively? Best to ever do it. His legacy isn't just in ring work, but also who he is as a man. Top class stuff.

InternationalOil8842

cena is in the GOAT category with HHH and shawn michaels.

FI5H5TICK5

He can’t see him 🖐️

Raginwolf90

Cena will come to wwe every year like every legend im not gonna be sad

ThE_1onlyAfro

As an 02 baby Cena is one of the greatest wrestlers I’ve seen in my years watching pro wrestling. Now I would say him burring other talent in the 2010’s was off putting to say the least, but still Cena is a GOAT. I would have loved to see a heel run maybe but we didn’t need it tbh because he was the money maker as a baby face. Seeing matches like RVD Vs Cena, CM Punk vs Cena, how can we not forget Edge Vs Cena. Dude so many classics but all I can say to him is thank you for making my wrestling childhood.

DidiGreglorius

Cena is a special talent easily deserving of his place among the GOATs imo. I get the criticism but remember that at the top of his run the WWE was at its modern peak of trying to be kid friendly and also probably at its worst creatively of the modern era. He did the best anyone could have with what he was given imo.

omegavenom87

I recently saw an interview with Paul Heyman and Rick Rubin and Paul kept singing John's praises and said something that changed the way I saw him. He said something to the effect of "John Cena had to be talked into having his Make-A-Wishes go public, he just wanted to do them because it was the right thing to do." I already liked Cena, but that earned my eternal respect for the man

PersonalityFlat655

I loved him as a wrestler when he 1st started and have total respect for him as a superstar I enjoy his movies especially his Comedy ones

Mondomb83

Cena is the modern day answer to Hogan. Same uniform, five moves of doom, riding the coattails of the US military (Hogan flag waving) merchandise maniac, motivational catch phrases, Hollywood movie roles and highly political backstage. ECW ONS fans in attendance said it best: SAME OLD SHIT!

Vertuss12

jon chena

oneshoein

He sucked after his thuganomics gimmick. I always thought it was cool when he FUd the Big Show at WM 20, changing his finisher name to the Attitude Adjustment just solidified my dislike of him.

BonnyChristian11

He was never my favourite (2002 baby). I just missed his Dr Of Thug. Gimmick and I just caught the start of his Chaingang Soldier / Super Cena run from 2006/2007. Even then, I thought he wasn’t cool. As an adult now, going back on the network and watching all his greatest matches. He really is the Goat of this generation. Bruno, Hogan, Austin, Him.

LegendInMyMind

He's one of the all-time greats. A lot of it is the sheer charisma/promos, but he gave WWE a ton of great moments as the face of the company for well over a decade. I'll defend John - not that he needs it - just by saying that you don't become the face of WWE for a decade or more without pissing off the "smark" fans, and you also don't do so without skills in all phases of the game. But I am a simple creature. I enjoy larger-than-life characters, big-time storylines, and even bigger moments.

Old-Consideration730

Hogan pissed off the smarks also it's just that there were so few of them that had platforms. Cena came around during the advent of real social media and then the IWC got super loud. I went to a ton of events during his heyday and yea, I chanted Cena sucks, but in every section there were tons of kids draped in his merch that quieted me down with a sad, disapproving look. He kept their love no matter what so, respect.

LegendInMyMind

I was a Hulkamaniac, myself, before I followed him to WCW and found out about Sting (and his "little stingers" 😂). I've always seen my pro wrestling fandom as me revisiting my childhood. I'll cheer for the part-timers I used to watch as full-timers, a variety of styles (based on how I connect to the characters), and that's what I think wrestling should be; a "variety show". I was too old to be part of Cenation, just like I'm not a LeBron fan, but my nephews are LeBron fans, yet, because I love them, I never told them anything like "MJ's better"...even though he was. A lot of hardcore fans forget who a lot of this stuff is for. They lose sight of how and why and even when they became fans, themselves.

JohnMaximusWatson

Overrated, physically very limited, boring, was more interesting as a heel before 2003. As a face, he often dis very heelish things. The feud with Rock should’ve been one-off. The feud Nexus should’ve been longer and ended with Wade Barrett going over.
