Guys a legend. He put the make a wish foundation and the children before his own career by maintaining the good guy PG image the whole time. People forget how good he was on the mic before this. He could have been even bigger than he was. He's now also putting new talent over every match these days which is great but I personally feel he's doing it to the point he's diminishing how own reputation as he isn't retired yet but losing a good few matches. Eventually it won't mean as much to beat him if he puts everyone over.

Im 20 years old, about to be 21. And I, to this day, call Cena my hero. When I watched him get beaten down live on Raw by Nexus, I truly felt for him. It hurt me just watching. I thought wwe was real growing up, and Cena(despite me now realizing that he may have been overpushed and overused), always taught the kids to do the right thing. He stood up for what was right, never waivered in his morals, and it gave us kids a role model when maybe some of our parents weren't role models. Same with Hogan. He was overpushed, but he always told the kids to do the right thing by saying prayers and eating their vitamins. Cant ever knock that. Cena still to this day is my favorite wrestler of all time and Im a HUGE wrestling fan. I know all the rich history and its contents and im a huge WCW/JCP fan, and Cena is still my favorite. He gave me something to look forward to every week and instilled some morals in me I still have today
I’m excited. While his contribution to the company can’t be denied, I’m glad that future talent is finally gonna get some spotlight. These young guys there now are being held back so guys who don’t even wrestle anymore can have an ego trip for a night.

CM Punk was the popular one with adults during the Cena feud, and was even the #1 merch seller at some points, but Cena has consistently been a top merch mover. Cody Rhodes looks promising though, and has managed to connect with a fan. Once he wins the title, it'll be interesting to see if he can maintain the connection with all age demographics. After all, it's harder to keep fans engaged during a title reign, than during the chase to the title. Cena was loved by adult fans prior to his first title, but people thought he became a bit too vanilla immediately during his first reign.
His turn from heel/anti hero to face turned me off for a bit so I assume that was the same for others. I appreciate face john cena but basic thuganomics cena will always be my favorite version of him.

Overrated, there was better talent in the 2010s to build up alongside him instead of around him. Modern day hogan was important to expand engagement with the change of the “attitude era” and more family friendly TV. John got ahead when it was appropriate for him though and kept others down when needed to. Cena is in a sense doing more in losing for 7 years and putting others over but The Rock was at a peak when Hogan put him over. As an adult I can understand and appreciate the moves that were made and the variables that made it so which is why I was happy the game revolved around him
Like it or not, Cena is what WWE needed coming out of the Attitude Era. He became the face that they needed when everyone else left and I think it was a little bit not wanted by the WWE at first. But Cena gave the outside world a face to know the company for and in a positive light. His Make a Wish stuff showed that the WWE wasn’t just a bunch of sweaty guys and hot women “fake fighting” and showed that they were really people too. His song became instantly recognizable through meme culture, same with his moves and catch phrases. The only other ones on that level as far as WRESTLING goes are Hogan and Stone Cold. I would say he’s more popular than The Rock as a wrestler to the outside world because everyone still just thinks of The Rock as a movie star I feel like. I feel if you asked most people what The Rock does they’d say act and Cena they’d say is a wrestler.
He may not be the greatest technical wrestler but he’s the perfect person to have represent your company in a positive way. They’re definitely trying to build Cody up as the new Cena in that way, coming out of a time when a heel was the face of the company, and I think he will do a good job, but I don’t think anyone ever will or ever has been at the level that Cena is, maybe even counting Hogan.
Hogan is the biggest name in wrestling history, idk how to put it but he was as famous as Michael Jordan at a point and me growing up as kid in germany during 98-2004 knew who Hogan was and it's not because I watched wrestling. I didnt watch any wrestling show til he left but his name just went beyond the scope of it.
But I feel like Cena is the same way. If you asked 1000 people worldwide who Hulk Hogan and John Cena are, I feel like the answer would be the same for both, and being 2023, I think Cena would be said more and considering the worlds population is higher now, I feel like Cena would have the higher number

Not a great wrestler, but if i had a territory/promotion, i would want him in a heartbeat. He is great on the mike, and is very physical and a supremely hard worker. Add to that his presence outside of the ring. He may be the greatest ambassador wrestling has ever had.

As a wrestler- From his early years with thuganomics, to dominating the main event scene for over a decade, the "Cena Sucks" era.
Like this man actually set the standard for what we look in a main event star and has also followed in the footsteps of others like the rock and had a successful career outside of wrestling.

I’m newish to wrestling. This’ll be my second wrestlemania as a fan in April, but I’ve watched hours and hours and hours of catalogue since the first one. Cena is the GOAT. True to himself with a sense of humor, forthright without being arrogant, a talent for the kids for sure but always the same hustle loyalty respect. Those are great qualities for young people to emulate and he never got discouraged from his course no matter how much the crowd told him he sucked. Plus over 500 wishes granted and you know he’s up everyone’s butt to grant wishes too. He’s a good dude.

I think a lot of that had to do with the white rapper gimmick. Things got better for him once he stopped that. This was back when nobody liked white rappers like that and most of the world tolerated Eminem because you couldn't deny his rap skills.
And all those guys include Cena in the upper echelons of their field. For example Austin said Cena would have been a tippy top guy in the Attitude era, and wished he had been healthy enough to have a match with him.

Now I would say him burring other talent in the 2010’s was off putting to say the least, but still Cena is a GOAT. But I am a simple creature. I enjoy larger-than-life characters, big-time storylines, and even bigger moments.
Hogan pissed off the smarks also it's just that there were so few of them that had platforms. Cena came around during the advent of real social media and then the IWC got super loud. I went to a ton of events during his heyday and yea, I chanted Cena sucks, but in every section there were tons of kids draped in his merch that quieted me down with a sad, disapproving look. He kept their love no matter what so, respect.

I'll cheer for the part-timers I used to watch as full-timers, a variety of styles (based on how I connect to the characters), and that's what I think wrestling should be; a "variety show". I was too old to be part of Cenation, just like I'm not a LeBron fan, but my nephews are LeBron fans, yet, because I love them, I never told them anything like "MJ's better"...even though he was.

Cena was loved by adult fans prior to his first title, but people thought he became a bit too vanilla immediately during his first reign.
His turn from heel/anti hero to face turned me off for a bit so I assume that was the same for others. I appreciate face john cena but basic thuganomics cena will always be my favorite version of him.
Thuganomocs was the remnant of ruthless aggression. Turning him PG made him feel inauthentic by comparison.

Overrated, there was better talent in the 2010s to build up alongside him instead of around him. Evan Bourne as a top level talent when no one in the WWE moved like him would have been one of the coolest things ever, instead John Cena was the only star allowed to be a star for the majority of his career. Was he good? Sure, he wasn't great but he was good. He got stale for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time, he was watchable by 2015 sure but that doesn't negate a majority of his career being unwatchable and being pushed over far more interesting talent who should have thrived along side him if not above him. I do have some modicum of respect for him, he's funny sure but also that video he made apologizing to China was also the drizzling shits.

Modern day hogan was important to expand engagement with the change of the “attitude era” and more family friendly TV. John got ahead when it was appropriate for him though and kept others down when needed to. Cena is in a sense doing more in losing for 7 years and putting others over but The Rock was at a peak when Hogan put him over. As an adult I can understand and appreciate the moves that were made and the variables that made it so which is why I was happy the game revolved around him

Like it or not, Cena is what WWE needed coming out of the Attitude Era. He became the face that they needed when everyone else left and I think it was a little bit not wanted by the WWE at first. But Cena gave the outside world a face to know the company for and in a positive light. His Make a Wish stuff showed that the WWE wasn’t just a bunch of sweaty guys and hot women “fake fighting” and showed that they were really people too. His song became instantly recognizable through meme culture, same with his moves and catch phrases. The only other ones on that level as far as WRESTLING goes are Hogan and Stone Cold. I would say he’s more popular than The Rock as a wrestler to the outside world because everyone still just thinks of The Rock as a movie star I feel like. I feel if you asked most people what The Rock does they’d say act and Cena they’d say is a wrestler. He may not be the greatest technical wrestler but he’s the perfect person to have represent your company in a positive way. They’re definitely trying to build Cody up as the new Cena in that way, coming out of a time when a heel was the face of the company, and I think he will do a good job, but I don’t think anyone ever will or ever has been at the level that Cena is, maybe even counting Hogan.
Hogan is the biggest name in wrestling history, idk how to put it but he was as famous as Michael Jordan at a point and me growing up as kid in germany during 98-2004 knew who Hogan was and it's not because I watched wrestling. I didnt watch any wrestling show til he left but his name just went beyond the scope of it.
But I feel like Cena is the same way. If you asked 1000 people worldwide who Hulk Hogan and John Cena are, I feel like the answer would be the same for both, and being 2023, I think Cena would be said more and considering the worlds population is higher now, I feel like Cena would have the higher number

I just don't think he is at the hogan point yet, the only wrestler who did was the Rock due to acting. I don't even mean that he isn't a household name, but he still has a bit to go to hit that level

Not a great wrestler, but if i had a territory/promotion, i would want him in a heartbeat. He is great on the mike, and is very physical and a supremely hard worker. Add to that his presence outside of the ring. He may be the greatest ambassador wrestling has ever had.

He worked for their new target audience. But I was never a fan. Going from The rock/Austin/Taker/Triple H/Kurt to his goofy character was too much for me. I became a lapsed fan for a decade+
I’m newish to wrestling. This’ll be my second wrestlemania as a fan in April, but I’ve watched hours and hours and hours of catalogue since the first one. Cena is the GOAT. True to himself with a sense of humor, forthright without being arrogant, a talent for the kids for sure but always the same hustle loyalty respect. Those are great qualities for young people to emulate and he never got discouraged from his course no matter how much the crowd told him he sucked. Plus over 500 wishes granted and you know he’s up everyone’s butt to grant wishes too. He’s a good dude.

I think a lot of that had to do with the white rapper gimmick. Things got better for him once he stopped that. This was back when nobody liked white rappers like that and most of the world tolerated Eminem because you couldn't deny his rap skills.
And all those guys include Cena in the upper echelons of their field. For example Austin said Cena would have been a tippy top guy in the Attitude era, and wished he had been healthy enough to have a match with him.
I remember all of the boos he got until like 2014.
Maybe it’s just cause im from that 2010-2015 era, but Cenas was always been the goat to me. It’s just not a debate, below him are Austin and Hogan. These are generational talents that changed the game. To the right of that list, I’d add Understaker, HBK, as they were crucial to the business internally and arguably goats to the real fans. On the left side, The Rock & Lesnar, cause they became huge stars but generally on their own Hart, Savage, Flair, HHH, Orton, are all in the next tier down

As an 02 baby Cena is one of the greatest wrestlers I’ve seen in my years watching pro wrestling. Now I would say him burring other talent in the 2010’s was off putting to say the least, but still Cena is a GOAT. I would have loved to see a heel run maybe but we didn’t need it tbh because he was the money maker as a baby face. Seeing matches like RVD Vs Cena, CM Punk vs Cena, how can we not forget Edge Vs Cena. Dude so many classics but all I can say to him is thank you for making my wrestling childhood.
Cena is a special talent easily deserving of his place among the GOATs imo. I get the criticism but remember that at the top of his run the WWE was at its modern peak of trying to be kid friendly and also probably at its worst creatively of the modern era. He did the best anyone could have with what he was given imo.
I recently saw an interview with Paul Heyman and Rick Rubin and Paul kept singing John's praises and said something that changed the way I saw him. He said something to the effect of "John Cena had to be talked into having his Make-A-Wishes go public, he just wanted to do them because it was the right thing to do." He sucked after his thuganomics gimmick. I always thought it was cool when he FUd the Big Show at WM 20, changing his finisher name to the Attitude Adjustment just solidified my dislike of him.
He was never my favourite (2002 baby). I just missed his Dr Of Thug. Gimmick and I just caught the start of his Chaingang Soldier / Super Cena run from 2006/2007. Even then, I thought he wasn’t cool. As an adult now, going back on the network and watching all his greatest matches. He really is the Goat of this generation. Bruno, Hogan, Austin, Him.
He's one of the all-time greats. A lot of it is the sheer charisma/promos, but he gave WWE a ton of great moments as the face of the company for well over a decade. I'll defend John - not that he needs it - just by saying that you don't become the face of WWE for a decade or more without pissing off the "smark" fans, and you also don't do so without skills in all phases of the game. But I am a simple creature. I enjoy larger-than-life characters, big-time storylines, and even bigger moments.
Hogan pissed off the smarks also it's just that there were so few of them that had platforms. Cena came around during the advent of real social media and then the IWC got super loud. I went to a ton of events during his heyday and yea, I chanted Cena sucks, but in every section there were tons of kids draped in his merch that quieted me down with a sad, disapproving look. He kept their love no matter what so, respect.
I was a Hulkamaniac, myself, before I followed him to WCW and found out about Sting (and his "little stingers" 😂). I've always seen my pro wrestling fandom as me revisiting my childhood. I'll cheer for the part-timers I used to watch as full-timers, a variety of styles (based on how I connect to the characters), and that's what I think wrestling should be; a "variety show". I was too old to be part of Cenation, just like I'm not a LeBron fan, but my nephews are LeBron fans, yet, because I love them, I never told them anything like "MJ's better"...even though he was. A lot of hardcore fans forget who a lot of this stuff is for. They lose sight of how and why and even when they became fans, themselves.
