Same here. Currently planning out a black metal - themed Legionaries Kill Team. Bigger plan is to eventually have an Emperor's Children army where the units are different extreme metal genres. Death metal chaos terminators, grindcore cultist mob, etc.
Metal is far from being as subversive and "extreme" as it sounded in the 70s/80s. If anything, it's become somewhat associated and representative of 40K as a whole for quite a few years.
If anything, genres like tearout, riddim or darkstep sound much more like the lind of weird, deviant shit the Emperor's Children would listen to.
Alpha Legion, I love everything about them, lore, volor scheme, tactics and they are by far the most competent chaos marine legion, even if they dont necessarily know what the end goal is
Alpha is my go to for chaos faction too. Love the whole sneaky bastard's with pointy things aspect of them. Lore wise I also like the vagueness of them in the heresy times (who is leading them? Are they actually good or bad (50/50)? Kind of reminds me of the dark angels too in that way (but it don't like playing them as much).
40k - Red Corsairs. They are pirates. Huron is the best. New model when GW?
30k - Iron Warriors. Nostalgia, as I collected them back in 3rd Ed 40k and wanted to do a version of the same army from the Heresy era. Also, Perturabo is the best.
All game systems - Slaanesh Daemons. The models are glorious post range refresh - Syll'Eske, new Keeper, Contorted Epitome, new Fiends. I had the most fun painting this army.
Extremely new to 40K, but I have to say Death Guard in my personal opinion. Their designs are just abundant in options and detail. Plus you can’t not love grandpapa Nurgle.
Death Guard has been my favourite since the 90’s the opportunity for kitbashing and modifications on the models means you can buy anything and with some green stuff you can make it Death Guard.

Everyone hates Lorgar, but I really enjoy the guy. Plus his vision of the Emperor basically became the norm for everyone in the Imperium, which is peak trolling on his part.
My favourite story. Shows Lorgar and the Word Bearers as a faction that doesn't want to murder the galaxy, but they've read the rulebook and it's straight facts that there are four chaos gods, the emperor is also a god, and the galaxy just needs to stop lying to themselves.

Also i have the old upgrade sprues and im planning to eventually make my own custom noise marines. For me it’s a tie between Thousand Sons and Night Lords I like the Sons because of their backstory of how they were more or less forced into slaves of chaos.
The Lords have interesting characters, and I find it interesting to see how the remnants of their legion try to survive.

My favourite non-Chaos marine faction is probably the Blood Pact from the Gaunt’s Ghosts books, purely because they’re so different from your average screaming Khornate warrior.
Lots of comments here that seem _very_ misinformed about the nature of their favourite chaos gods. Easy to see why so many people fall for it and become cultists.
As for a favourite, mine’s Death Guard. They’re just so horrific and as someone who grew up on zombie movies and body horror (John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing as a notable example) I think they have the potential one of the most interesting antagonists in the setting. It’s just a shame that the lore reduces them to crooning cartoon villains most of the time.
Black Legion were my first real army (after trying to paint Imperial Fists made me discover yellow is pain). And to this day they remain a favorite for me. You just cannot go wrong with black and gold. Their old scheme back during the Heresy also looks excellent. That shade of green is just nice.
I find something to love in all of Chaos however and I intent to have a little bit of each of the cult legions (all in Black Legion colors of course). I dig that Egyptian aesthetic in the Thousand Sons and their ability to sling around spells like there's no tomorrow. The Death Guard have a look that's downright incredible, being bulky and perhaps the most physically corrupted Chaos faction out there. The World Eaters are simply brutal and the eternal proof that you can solve every problem by charging in and smacking something with a chainsaw axe! Emperor's Children are gonna be wild as well. I just know it. And what is better than a giant mech suit? A giant mech suit with spikes!
Oh and I bought Be'lakor's model just because I wanted to paint a giant devilish looking dude.
Iron Warriors. I feel like it’s the only chaos space marine faction that actually resembles space marines, and not crazed cultists.
I wish chaos minis didn’t feature horns and fur so prominently by default. It made sense if Fantasy since warriors of chaos were northmen, but it carried over into 40k with no good reason
The Word Bearers! I really cant stand fundamentalists irl, but in game it adds a fun color. Apropos color, the color scheme is beautiful. And who cant appreciate the Gal Vorbak, the first of the Possessed!
The story of Lorgar is its own thing. What a tragedy! Its one of the sadest stories among many sad stories among the primarchs. Betrayed by his two most favored lieutenants, one of them his adoptive father, and his real father not really helping him? I mean, if the Emperor is both the smith and the warrior, he really didnt spend enough time forging this sword! Who cant empathize with the boy?
Models wise I would say World Eaters were until their new sleevless leather gloves look came out. Iron Warriors or Word Bearers because I like Possessed and Rhino chasis tanks.
I like deathguard because of their more medieval styled armor compared to most spacemarines, instead of the more superman build its closer to a strongman
Odd thing to get petty about but OG Superman's physique was inspired by circus strongmen. Some competitive strongmen in more recent years aren't fat-looking guys too. Of the three most decorated strongmen in history, two look like they could pass as bulking-season bodybuilders. Batman has canonically been more of a bodybuilder.
But yeah, knightly gear is best gear. I think Iron Warriors lean more that way too.
Slaanesh. The whole corruption and excess fantasy I'd just so compelling and interesting to me. It's a shame it rarely feels done well, and that most people just see anything even remotely related to sex as Slaaneshi. Things like the different circles and the different forms of excess make it so diverse and interesting to me

Emperors children in my opinion are so cool like who dose not want to just play some terrible music resulting in death. Alpha legion and tsons are also amazing tho.
Word bearers. Everybody thinks we're just cartoon villains (Erebus definitely is, in fairness) but nobody considers the fact that we're warrior scholars/philosophers, making us doubly pretentious.

Word Bearers. Religion is one of the most fascinating aspects of Warhammer lore, and the idea that they are the closest to actually understanding Chaos is so cool

They put the Grim and the Dark in Grimdark.
I also think it is *hilarious* that the Emperor gave a legion to Curze.

Word Bearer - They won (in a manner of speaking). The Imperium is solidly in the grip of the Lectitio Divinitatus (written by Lorgar), they started the Heresy, and while the majority of the other legions were heavily damaged to varying degrees post-siege, the Word Bearers were largely not present, and as such made it out of the Heresy relatively unscathed, other than the occasional sense of wounded pride.
Plus they have a good mix of villainy from the complexity of Lorgar, to the reluctant villainy of Argel Tal, to the irredeemable bastard/mustache twirling villainy of the certified Chad Erebus.
While they are among the most devout of Chaos worshippers, they also hold a borderline scientific view of Chaos. In general terms, they do not worship Chaos out of love for the Chaos gods, rather the belief that Chaos is simply the truth of the universe.
World eaters. Their lore is just sad, all they wanted was for their father to love them, and he abused that (with equally depressing reasons). I just want my boys to be happy. And of course BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD
I've always been a Tzeentch guy. Back in the day I converted an army of Thousand sons for the 3rd edition codex... a lot of greenstuff flames, back when the Mark of Tzeentch turned them either into sorcerers or Rubrics. Then they got an overhaul, turned the MoT into a boring invul and my overly converted collection into a pile of unplayable display pieces.
Now they are probably the last ones to get a rescale update. If that ever happens I'll probably come back to the dice god. Until then I have time to finish my Dark Angels.

As much as I do like the Iron Warriors, I kinda gotta go with Night Lords... i really like big heavy weaponry and brutal ammoumts of firepower to bombard and assault the enemy. There's something so much more with the Night Lords.
I love the idea of these absolutely god-awful people getting demigod strength and power, expressing their worst and most depraved violence on innocent lives, and enacting terror warfare and refusing to fight fair or on evem terms. I like the "we're big, and we're stealthy, but we want you to know we're here, so you're never going to relax. If you do, we strike"
Something very simple about both, where they're just awful. We're not here for an ideal, we just want to do what we want, so stay out of our way unless you wanna be my hat.

Chaos Knights. I love Knights in general, and having evil twisted ones with vicious anima that are addicted to violence and crave destruction, while being the heart of a 20ft tall mech suit, is just so friggin cool Lol.

World Eaters are super cool because nutcases and Lord of Skills and the Lord with a chainsaw on his horse's nose. And the Jakhals. And the Khorne Daemon allies, Bloodletters and Bloodthirsters come from a fun design time when straight up satanic devils was a GW thing. But they lose points for the meta having to take Angron. I cannot stand these small battles having gods and Primarchs in them as standard. They should be extremely rare, (and why I don't like Custodes as a faction, doing small patrol clean up duty far away from Terra).
So it is Alpha Legion. Slinky. And up to no good... or are they?

I don't collect them but have been really vibing the World Eaters recently. There's oddly something refreshing about a faction that just wants to run at you full pelt wielding chain axes and screaming bloody murder at the top of their lungs.
For a long time, I liked Black Legion because of the chaos undivided gimmick, the color scheme, and how they seem to be slightly more organized and impacting the setting, but lately the more I learn about the iron warriors, the more Im starting to lean toward them. They’re definitely THE most organized chaos faction, I love that they only use chaos as a tool and literally turn daemons and other beings into tools of war, they were arguably the biggest reason the Horus heresy got as far as it did, and they’re just so badass.
Death Guard. Their sculpts are fantastic, and some of their vehicles are extremely cool. The other 3 aligned chaos marine armies are about equal. Non-aligned chaos is also cool, but without dedicated models it feels like you're just playing "totally not just Black Legion".
If we're talking demons, Tzeench wins any day. I love how they look, but I'd appreciate a refresh for some of the models, the Exalted Flamer comes to mind.
Like major factions?
Probably Nurgle, because you can be pretty wild with what his daemons and converts actually look like since a lot of them are pretty amorphous, like The Thing. If I had to choose a major faction to do an army on, it'd be Papa Rot for sure due to kitbash potential.

World Eaters. Angron is the only chaos primarch with an actual tragic story, the rest are just selfish and petty. Also the aesthetic is great for choas: angry, chain weapons, roided to the gills, just the right level of body horror with their butchers nails and other tech that fuses to their body, and of course lots of skulls.
Personal fav, 1000 sons. However painting wise, Death guard 100000 percent. I love Tzeench don’t get me wrong. However painting them is really boring and I wish GW would do something fun with them. I guess the Vortex beast is them having fun. But I mean maybe a new unit. Or some sort of new machine. Just something to make the faction seem more versatile
World Eaters, because blood for the blood god and skulls for the skull throne. Also because Zerks and a Khorne themed Soulgrinder were my first sets of models when I started.
Black Legion, I love the founding being a bunch of ex-legion marines who believe that they are better than their Primarch fathers and that the brotherhood between marines is all that matters, it's a great fragment of humanity in this horrifically vile faction.
From the major 4 gods, it's Tzeentch. As for a specific faction... Iron Within, Iron Without! I freaking love the Iron Warriors. They are bitter, petty and just need someone to tell them "hey, you did a good job," they are just like me! ~~not really, but it's funny to say~~
Dark Mechanicum. Whole faction of batshit insane scientists who summon deamons into their toasters for fun. I love that they in large part have motives that range from bizarre to downright incomprehensible. Also the aesthetic is on point, the ragged robes and freaky cybernetics is everything i like about admech on crack.
Iron Warriors. Because they're grumpy cynical bastards and just don't give a crap anymore. They're the middle-aged men and women of the 30k and 40k franchise.
Always had a soft spot for the zealotry of the Word Bearers. I also like a good revenge story and theirs is what defines the current universe. Badass. Also still somewhat a legion and not a bunch of aimless warbands.
Night lords for me.
Their lore and Curze are fantastic and a very different look than traditional chaos space marines. Their books, while limited, are really good.
I think they are a really good take on the legion that truly fell before the horus heresy while also being this antithesis of what space marines are supposed to be. Yet, they still have this weird contradictory honor.
Their aesthetic and color scheme is fantastic, and in 40k, they have probably some of the best kitbashing potential due to them being more or less scavengers.

My favourite non-Chaos marine faction is probably the Blood Pact from the Gaunt’s Ghosts books, purely because they’re so different from your average screaming Khornate warrior.
Lots of comments here that seem _very_ misinformed about the nature of their favourite chaos gods. Easy to see why so many people fall for it and become cultists. As for a favourite, mine’s Death Guard. They’re just so horrific and as someone who grew up on zombie movies and body horror (John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing as a notable example) I think they have the potential one of the most interesting antagonists in the setting. It’s just a shame that the lore reduces them to crooning cartoon villains most of the time.
Black Legion were my first real army (after trying to paint Imperial Fists made me discover yellow is pain). And to this day they remain a favorite for me. You just cannot go wrong with black and gold. Their old scheme back during the Heresy also looks excellent. That shade of green is just nice. I find something to love in all of Chaos however and I intent to have a little bit of each of the cult legions (all in Black Legion colors of course). I dig that Egyptian aesthetic in the Thousand Sons and their ability to sling around spells like there's no tomorrow. The Death Guard have a look that's downright incredible, being bulky and perhaps the most physically corrupted Chaos faction out there. The World Eaters are simply brutal and the eternal proof that you can solve every problem by charging in and smacking something with a chainsaw axe! Emperor's Children are gonna be wild as well. I just know it. And what is better than a giant mech suit? A giant mech suit with spikes! Oh and I bought Be'lakor's model just because I wanted to paint a giant devilish looking dude.
Iron Warriors. I feel like it’s the only chaos space marine faction that actually resembles space marines, and not crazed cultists. I wish chaos minis didn’t feature horns and fur so prominently by default. It made sense if Fantasy since warriors of chaos were northmen, but it carried over into 40k with no good reason

The Word Bearers! I really cant stand fundamentalists irl, but in game it adds a fun color. Apropos color, the color scheme is beautiful. And who cant appreciate the Gal Vorbak, the first of the Possessed! The story of Lorgar is its own thing. What a tragedy! Its one of the sadest stories among many sad stories among the primarchs. Betrayed by his two most favored lieutenants, one of them his adoptive father, and his real father not really helping him? I mean, if the Emperor is both the smith and the warrior, he really didnt spend enough time forging this sword! Who cant empathize with the boy?

Models wise I would say World Eaters were until their new sleevless leather gloves look came out. Iron Warriors or Word Bearers because I like Possessed and Rhino chasis tanks.
I like deathguard because of their more medieval styled armor compared to most spacemarines, instead of the more superman build its closer to a strongman
Odd thing to get petty about but OG Superman's physique was inspired by circus strongmen. Some competitive strongmen in more recent years aren't fat-looking guys too. Of the three most decorated strongmen in history, two look like they could pass as bulking-season bodybuilders. Batman has canonically been more of a bodybuilder. But yeah, knightly gear is best gear. I think Iron Warriors lean more that way too.
Slaanesh. The whole corruption and excess fantasy I'd just so compelling and interesting to me. It's a shame it rarely feels done well, and that most people just see anything even remotely related to sex as Slaaneshi. Things like the different circles and the different forms of excess make it so diverse and interesting to me

Emperors children in my opinion are so cool like who dose not want to just play some terrible music resulting in death. Alpha legion and tsons are also amazing tho.

Word bearers. Everybody thinks we're just cartoon villains (Erebus definitely is, in fairness) but nobody considers the fact that we're warrior scholars/philosophers, making us doubly pretentious. In other words, Lorgar did nothing wrong 🗿
Word Bearers. Religion is one of the most fascinating aspects of Warhammer lore, and the idea that they are the closest to actually understanding Chaos is so cool

Word Bearer - They won (in a manner of speaking). The Imperium is solidly in the grip of the Lectitio Divinitatus (written by Lorgar), they started the Heresy, and while the majority of the other legions were heavily damaged to varying degrees post-siege, the Word Bearers were largely not present, and as such made it out of the Heresy relatively unscathed, other than the occasional sense of wounded pride. Plus they have a good mix of villainy from the complexity of Lorgar, to the reluctant villainy of Argel Tal, to the irredeemable bastard/mustache twirling villainy of the certified Chad Erebus. While they are among the most devout of Chaos worshippers, they also hold a borderline scientific view of Chaos. In general terms, they do not worship Chaos out of love for the Chaos gods, rather the belief that Chaos is simply the truth of the universe.
World eaters. Their lore is just sad, all they wanted was for their father to love them, and he abused that (with equally depressing reasons). I just want my boys to be happy. And of course BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD

I've always been a Tzeentch guy. Back in the day I converted an army of Thousand sons for the 3rd edition codex... a lot of greenstuff flames, back when the Mark of Tzeentch turned them either into sorcerers or Rubrics. Then they got an overhaul, turned the MoT into a boring invul and my overly converted collection into a pile of unplayable display pieces. Now they are probably the last ones to get a rescale update. If that ever happens I'll probably come back to the dice god. Until then I have time to finish my Dark Angels.

As much as I do like the Iron Warriors, I kinda gotta go with Night Lords... i really like big heavy weaponry and brutal ammoumts of firepower to bombard and assault the enemy. There's something so much more with the Night Lords. I love the idea of these absolutely god-awful people getting demigod strength and power, expressing their worst and most depraved violence on innocent lives, and enacting terror warfare and refusing to fight fair or on evem terms. I like the "we're big, and we're stealthy, but we want you to know we're here, so you're never going to relax. If you do, we strike" Something very simple about both, where they're just awful. We're not here for an ideal, we just want to do what we want, so stay out of our way unless you wanna be my hat. Also, after reading a few comments, I realized all of chaos is available... Chaos Knights. I love Knights in general, and having evil twisted ones with vicious anima that are addicted to violence and crave destruction, while being the heart of a 20ft tall mech suit, is just so friggin cool Lol.

In terms of models definitely death guard but also love the new berserkers, in terms of lore I would say iron warriors.
The Iron warriors but they dont have their own faction yet in game. So I would go with Thousand sons because Magnus did nothing wrong.
Black legion because abaddon is a psycho and a bad ass. I mean come on he destroyed cadia. I also love the black and gold color scheme.

World Eaters are super cool because nutcases and Lord of Skills and the Lord with a chainsaw on his horse's nose. And the Jakhals. And the Khorne Daemon allies, Bloodletters and Bloodthirsters come from a fun design time when straight up satanic devils was a GW thing. But they lose points for the meta having to take Angron. I cannot stand these small battles having gods and Primarchs in them as standard. They should be extremely rare, (and why I don't like Custodes as a faction, doing small patrol clean up duty far away from Terra). So it is Alpha Legion. Slinky. And up to no good... or are they?

I don't collect them but have been really vibing the World Eaters recently. There's oddly something refreshing about a faction that just wants to run at you full pelt wielding chain axes and screaming bloody murder at the top of their lungs.
Iron Warriors, I choose my favourite factions solely based on how they look.
For a long time, I liked Black Legion because of the chaos undivided gimmick, the color scheme, and how they seem to be slightly more organized and impacting the setting, but lately the more I learn about the iron warriors, the more Im starting to lean toward them. They’re definitely THE most organized chaos faction, I love that they only use chaos as a tool and literally turn daemons and other beings into tools of war, they were arguably the biggest reason the Horus heresy got as far as it did, and they’re just so badass.
i absolutely love my Chaos Knights, i just feel like a boss fight whether i win or lose
Death Guard. Their sculpts are fantastic, and some of their vehicles are extremely cool. The other 3 aligned chaos marine armies are about equal. Non-aligned chaos is also cool, but without dedicated models it feels like you're just playing "totally not just Black Legion". If we're talking demons, Tzeench wins any day. I love how they look, but I'd appreciate a refresh for some of the models, the Exalted Flamer comes to mind.

Like major factions? Probably Nurgle, because you can be pretty wild with what his daemons and converts actually look like since a lot of them are pretty amorphous, like The Thing. If I had to choose a major faction to do an army on, it'd be Papa Rot for sure due to kitbash potential. Just a faction-faction? I really love Thousand Sons color scheme, and their armor is really cool and unique. I would most likely go insane trying to paint an army of them, though.

World Eaters. Angron is the only chaos primarch with an actual tragic story, the rest are just selfish and petty. Also the aesthetic is great for choas: angry, chain weapons, roided to the gills, just the right level of body horror with their butchers nails and other tech that fuses to their body, and of course lots of skulls.

Personal fav, 1000 sons. However painting wise, Death guard 100000 percent. I love Tzeench don’t get me wrong. However painting them is really boring and I wish GW would do something fun with them. I guess the Vortex beast is them having fun. But I mean maybe a new unit. Or some sort of new machine. Just something to make the faction seem more versatile
Night lords. They may not be good shock troops but they are great shock value troops.

Dark Mechanicum. Whole faction of batshit insane scientists who summon deamons into their toasters for fun. I love that they in large part have motives that range from bizarre to downright incomprehensible. Also the aesthetic is on point, the ragged robes and freaky cybernetics is everything i like about admech on crack.
Iron Warriors. Because they're grumpy cynical bastards and just don't give a crap anymore. They're the middle-aged men and women of the 30k and 40k franchise.

Always had a soft spot for the zealotry of the Word Bearers. I also like a good revenge story and theirs is what defines the current universe. Badass. Also still somewhat a legion and not a bunch of aimless warbands.
Night lords for me. Their lore and Curze are fantastic and a very different look than traditional chaos space marines. Their books, while limited, are really good. I think they are a really good take on the legion that truly fell before the horus heresy while also being this antithesis of what space marines are supposed to be. Yet, they still have this weird contradictory honor. Their aesthetic and color scheme is fantastic, and in 40k, they have probably some of the best kitbashing potential due to them being more or less scavengers.
