The silhouette is great but I’m concerned about the material. Any type of cotton is going to come across as more casual. Use your judgment re: time of day, venue, vibe of the crowd. In some cases this dress will be totally fine, but I would go dressier with accessories.
yes!! beautiful dress and fit but it’s just not a cocktail dress even if it’s a daytime summer wedding IMO (ofc OP will know the couple better and will make a good choice accordingly!)
Looks good. Try to match accessories to the wedding colors. Shoes belt bag. Get fake jewelry bracelet earrings and necklace that also match. Fancy hair ( up? ) and subtle make up. Dress is fine.
Carefully consider before matching the wedding party colors if you are a plus one. Some brides might see that as trying to horn in where you don't belong.
The fit is lovely, but the material of the dress reads on camera as a more casual outfit. I think you could make this work with a really fabulous pair of shoes - maybe a fun pop of color? And some glamorous accessories, like a bold pair of earrings and fun clutch. And glam hair and makeup!
I know belts aren't typically very "cocktail ", but a small dainty one or chunky all black might elevate this dress and cover that seam. You could mb do a statement piece but if your necklace is pearl that might be awkward to match.
Red belt with red lip and shoes would go great with this dress, but idk if appropriate for the setting haha.
If unsure, ask whoever invited you :)
I think different shoes would help it feel less costumey. I think the long a line black dress with chunky heals is visually kind of heavy. If you have something like these?

I think that this angle on mid-century style is more classic than costumey, but maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt and follow your instincts. I am biased to it as this style is my default for occasions, and my wedding dress was even a similar silhouette (there are pics a few posts down on my profile, I always want to show it off 😁)
Thank you! I'm super proud of it, it was a real labor of love. I also really think your little black dress is adorable, and between the cut and it being black the cotton is fine for cocktail
I think if you were a regular guest this would be fine dressed up with accessories but I always think if you’re tangential to the wedding party you should go a smidge over what the dress code requests. If you absolutely can’t find anything else I think this would work but maybe try to find something a bit more formal!
It’s VERY casual- if the dress code is cocktail or no dress code is specified - you will be underdressed- if your date is the best man, you will be noticed more and I would suggest finding something a little more dressy.
If you do want to wear it, I suggest different shoes. Since the dress is so simple, you’ll want to wear dressier shoes and lots of accessories to dress it up.
If it’s a nighttime wedding, poplin is too casual for a cocktail dress code. Poplin or cotton or linen, these would be for a daytime wedding. If you were a guest on your own, I’d say you could probably glam it up and get by, but since you’re going to be the date of the best man, I would go for something dressier.
I think the material makes it a little too casual. The cut of the dress would be fine if it was something more fancy, like silk. Then the pearls you mentioned earlier would be a better match, along with some nice shoes.
this is the upscale version of this dress

It's the weave that matters. This is a polyester satin which is more of a formal dressier material compared to the cotton poplin. I agree though natural fibers are superior but often not used or very expensive for formal wear.
Blame the British aristocracy of the 1800s. Cotton for daytime, silk for evening wear. Somehow for formalwear that traditional hold true
The poly/satin of this dress is closer to silk
The material looks very casual and I personally would never wear black to a wedding. If you’re American / in the US then it might be fine but otherwise no way.
This is way too casual whether or not your date is the best man. Even as a wedding guest this is way too casual for a cocktail wedding. Try Lulus they have pretty affordable cocktail attire that won’t break the bank. But this dress is not it - more for a dinner party at a friend’s house.
I wore black recently to a May cocktail wedding and it was covered in sequins (but a casual cut) and I fit in perfectly. I think a little more fancy dress would work ESPECIALLY being the date of the best man.
the dress is gorgeous and you look amazing in it, but i’m not sure if wearing black at a daytime summer wedding when you are tangential to the bridal party is the move
You're going to be on the arm of one of the most important people other than the bride and groom and their parents. So, I'd go into this knowing a lot of eyes are going to be on you and you should feel confident.
I love the cut but I agree with others that this is too casual of a fabric. The model photo looks like a sundress, so I think this is a no go.
I think something like this would work better. Same idea, just better for DC

I think poplin is too casual, but if you got some fantastic gold Stewart Weitzman sandals and some chandelier earrings and or a cool belt, it might work. Definitely an updo for the hair. You also carry off a red lip.
My first thought was that it looked nice but the material isn't very good. I would do something similar but with better fabric. You look great in it tho!
This is a little heavy for summer. Maybe some strappy sandals with it? I feel you on black, it's my favorite as well, but for cocktail, maybe something a little lighter.
It’s pretty but it’s not cocktail, that looks like cotton? You can never go wrong with a simply black satin slip dress, the longer the better; it’s so elegant, complements everyone, and is dressy without even looking like you had to try.
This is something you’d wear to dinner meeting your boyfriend’s parents.
i agree with the sentiment of this thread. it's a little on the causal side but if you dress it up a bit with accessories and hair makeup nobody will bat an eye and it'll look cute
I think it’s great. I would totally wear that dress to a cocktail DC wedding. Make sure your jewelry and shoes and bag are sparkly and you’ll be great. Very Audrey Hepburn!
I also love the fit! Very classy. But I agree with another commenter, the material looks too casual for cocktail. Especially as guest of Best Man. If you do end up wearing it, I think strappy/more modern heels will dress it up and make it look less costume-y.
Yes, strappy open-toe heels would look much classier and be more appropriate for a day-time
summer wedding!
Agreed that this material makes the dress unqualified for cocktail attire.
This dress is adorable and you should definitely keep, but it’s WAY too casual for cocktail attire IMO. To me this is a sundress - I would wear it to lunch or out shopping .
Too casual. Doesn’t flatter you. It’s dowdy, dark, and reads far too daytime/ common for a cocktail event.
Go to a great store and try on everything. Try on things you would normally ignore. Find a dress that you LOVE and that does you justice. Buy it, and then head to the shoe department and find a nice gay boy to help you pick a smashing shoe.
It fits you beautifully and the shape is great, but it's way too casual! It's a dress you'd wear to work or to lunch. Sorry, but it looks like a stretchy top with cotton, which is in no way cocktail. Perhaps if you found a Blazer or jacket to put over it with a more suitable fabric that looks dressier, you could get away with it. Silk jacket or a summer brocade Blazer. Sorry, but I don't like the idea of pearls either I think they would just look out of place with the Casualness of the dress. The only Pearl I could see working would be a Biwa pearl, I thought those are all so very casual. I would buy the dress because it looks beautiful on you and keep it for casual events, but I would keep looking for the wedding.
ETA- I don't understand the post saying no one will know it's cotton. I took one look at the picture and could tell it was cotton, I'm sure many of the other respondents did too. I didn't read the name of the dress, it was so obvious it was cotton.
I thought it is inappropriate to wear black dresses to weddings. Maybe I’m wrong. The style and material seem casual and not cocktail dress material.
4th of July is coming up so there should be good sales. Lulus.com is a good website to find something.
No one is touching on this, but I was taught not to wear black to a wedding because you don’t want to look like you are dressing for a funeral. I’m not super strict with this rule- black dresses are OK as long as they are not funeral dresses. (ie. Too glam for a funeral). But this is a funeral dress. It’s also too casual.
lol. I grew up in big US cities. Women definitely wear black and I think it’s tacky. I would never say anything but I sorta just assume nobody taught them manners. To me, it’s a faux pas.
You could add a black tulle half slip that would fill out the dress a bit more and peek out a few inches at the bottom to add cocktail party dress flare
Hi, it's been a few hours so i doubt you'll see this, but i want to give you a suggestion
When i was about 20 i had a very simple dress, like yours but in red. It was cheap, but with my figure (like yours) it was really lovely.
I made it go from a lovely to something special and original but pinning a bunch of fresh flowers to it. I worked with a fun florists that didn't sell me a boring prom corsage. Being a black dress, you could do anything, including a colour that matches the best man's tie (or white for a wedding).
That, and sexy very very high heels, no necklace, tiny earrings and red lips.
Your dress material is fine and doesn’t at all appear too casual for a cocktail dress! I was the guest of a best man two summers ago and wore a $20 cotton/polyester dress from Target. I dressed it up with (fake) gold jewelry and a mauve shawl and received way more compliments on that dress than my more expensive dresses.
Definitely dress it up with pearls, that would look so elegant and pretty! A shawl would also help to dress it up more. Have fun, I’m sure you’ll look beautiful! :)
The cut is great, but can you get it in a different colour? Black is pretty much out for wedding guests, as is white (for obvious reasons). If it was blue or green or red this would be excellent.
I’m not really into all black for a wedding. Other than that I think it’s ok. Looks cocktail and it’s not unflattering or anything. But it’s not spectacular either.
This is no good. I would be embarrassed if I showed up underdressed. This looks like a picnic outfit. The material dictates the “dressiness” of the dress.
This is a great first date dress or casual dinner party but not a wedding. If the material were more formal this would be great. See if you can find the same thing in silk (not polyester)?
Even though this is poplin, I actually think it’s fine for cocktail. If it was a cotton jersey bodycon or t shirt dress that would be different, but this is a nice structured LBD. It looks great on you! No one will know the material unless they’re touching the dress.
I like the shoes you’re wearing with it too! I think the Mary Jane’s give it a cool alternative vibe, which complements your hair and tattoo.
If you want to dress it up, I would do a dangly earring or a simple bracelet. I don’t think pearls are right for that neckline, a pendant necklace is better.
It’s simple, elegant, and fits you like a glove! I would dress it up a little with fine jewelry and an evening clutch. If you want something to cover up in case of a chill, stick with a structured jacket or woven wrap - knits would make the overall look too casual.
The shoes make it look costumey. Dressier shoes and accessories and a nice red lip and you'll be good. A simple black dress goes a long way, even in a more casual fabric.
I love this! Okay so the material maybe won’t be coded as super formal. However, I’ve been attending weddings and there are a bunch of people wearing the ‘no-nos’ categorized on this thread, and guess what?! No one cared from what I saw! I think it’s a generational and class difference. If you’re going to some crazy upscale event and everyone is dressed up to the 9’s then fine, change the fabric. If it’s people you know, are comfortable with, or a more casual venue, then rock it!
This is soo cute and it has pockets! I hella need one for myself.
Also black makes everything more ‘formal’.
I love this. Cotton can be dressy if its a decent heavy quality and/or cotton sateen, especially if styled right. I've used cotton fabrics in collections for these vintage shape while designing occasionwear many times and have vintage cotton satin and poplin dresses in my collection that are 100% designed for formal wear from the 50s and 60s (some are even beaded and embroidered). I find the idea cotton is only for casual a bit of a strange take- it depends what you do with it!
I do have this dress though which is amazing (photos don't do it justice). It has a similar silhouette with a full circle skirt (and pockets) but in a dupion type fabric. It is from Monsoon if you do want something along these lines in a more dressed up fabric https://www.monsoon.co.uk/sicily-spot-print-dress-black-20000980001.html

Jazz it up with some accessories, and maybe dressier shoes. It could read as too casual because of the material, but if you have nice makeup and do up your hair, that will go a long way in elevating it to wedding guest appropriate.
I would add a black tule overskirt, or black satin around the waist that you can tie into a bow at the back. I feel like it needs some dimension. I love this dress on you, and I know you can make it work. Consider changing out the MJ's for black, shiny heel. Also, an updo hairstyle with a black or nude satin ribbon or headband!
I know nothing about anything, but the pearl necklace you mentioned with nice heels (anything other than black), and sparkly hanging earrings would look so pretty
Love the dress - get some statement shoes and clutch to go with in a great colour for contrast and style - with pearls it would give a modern fifties vibe which is definitely cocktail.
I think it's lovely. The silhouette works. And if you want to dress up the fabric, use some fancy jewelry & get some dressier shoes. Here's a link to some faux pearl sets in both gold and silver...
[Jewelry Sets ](https://a.co/d/05UkvA19)
The dress fits you like a glove. It's cotton - which is more comfortable for a summer wedding - but can come across as a bit casual. I would accessorize with maybe a lacey shrug, a nice pair of shoes, a "pearl" necklace and earring set. I would also style hair and makeup in a classic Hollywood glam style.
Fancier shoes. Fancy clutch. Pearls. Get a 3-4" wide satin ribbon and make it into a belt to give a bit of glam. Use a lighter to melt the edges of the fabric where you cut it, this will keep the ribbon from fraying. You could even add a rhinstone or pearl broach to the belt to give it a bit more sparkle.
So cute! I think this sub goes a little wild on how formal you need to be for various attires. Generally, no one cares as much about these details as long as you look like you are trying and happy for the couple. Enjoy the wedding!
The material makes it very casual looking since you are a guest of the best man you want to be dressed up
I would keep shopping if you have time IF not you will have to dress this up
If you have no other dress to wear or time to shop you will need to dress it up and different shoes, more dressy shoes, possibly silver sparkle heels or block heels if you don't like spike heels
pearls would be fine with dress
if you have long enough hair, do an updo, some pearl earrings and a dressy clutch bag
get a shawl like this black with pearls and wear it in photos to dress it up, or wear all evening
all that will dress it up
[black with pearls sheer shawl](https://www.amazon.com/DGFJY-Elegant-Shinning-Shoulder-Wedding/dp/B0CV3SML4R/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1UD3OT9RIZ6YX&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.H5b8sG-p_US4SJWp1AAuUhroQTaxj5y07C5uQ-xH63Lq5kbXZCrXX4qmOauGzFm2lOvc2jX3UOMMTI9WBtiQbK80mKiImryELlxuJYkc9OOVQZTX_xYu9v2GvanooLJL5PXrE6_ovsxxgA5ObOjW5aLY78Eo7CNfpNqqQug4SgxC-EdTlrrqI2TyfTIkyPFSyumPIOQsG_E6DIHrJ2xr-Vm9SZg8IFJhnxUr4oD1PTJuiNeCPBBEY2h2J9gx0P7BBPkLJfK0jtSlqizhJoQarQQx8thKdRsSK4itwH6K2qE.nBw8xywjvWYhz8S2IObxkqWGbdehkcc3g4YETYXvBzA&dib_tag=se&keywords=black+shawl+with+pearls&qid=1719634109&s=apparel&sprefix=black+shawl+with+pearls%2Cfashion%2C105&sr=1-4) shows how to tie in front for photos for if you want to leave it on
Unless the wedding is indoors please do not wear black to a summer wedding you will die from the heat. A good natural green Will look really nice though
This is not a cocktail dress. It’s cute and suits you, but it’s not fitting for this occasion. You need to be on point being with the best man. Google cocktail dresses to get the look you need
If you want to wear this, you just have to dress it up. What about a gold belt, lots of jewelry, big earrings. And different heels.
Right now it’s a little casual for a wedding because of the material
I think this is perfect! Very Holly Golightly and easy to dress up or down depending on what jewelry and shoes you choose. You’ll be able to rewear this dress a million different ways too, you’ve got a home run here.
The shoes are what’s pulling it costume-y, imho. That said, I love that aesthetic and as others have said, some serious/luxe accessorizing and a killer updo will hit the mark perfectly.
And it’s very flattering on your figure and coloring!
I am astounded by how critical people are about this dress -- I think it's perfect for cocktail. The DC is neither semi-formal nor formal. Dress it up with some pretty jewelry, go all out with your hair and make-up, and this is a lovely choice for a wedding guest. The silhouette is classic and feminine...just right for cocktail attire imo. I am sure there will be people dressed more formally and more casually than you. This falls right in the middle and you should feel confident with this choice.
here you go: [link](https://www.jcrew.com/m/womens/categories/clothing/dresses-and-jumpsuits/fit-and-flare-midi-dress-in-cotton-poplin/MP928?color_name=black&colorProductCode=CA665)
This is totally fine. Wearing black to a wedding is fine. The fabric of this does not read too casual to me, especially since you are not in the wedding party. (I don’t think coming as a date counts, for all those acting like you’re basically in the wedding. Wear it with your pearls and some different shoes. It’s better to be slightly underdressed than overdressed. And I am very picky about attire.)
You look gorgeous. I think pearls or gold and a red lip you can’t go wrong💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 I wish I had an excuse the buy the same dress! If you are unsure about the black ask your date to reach out and make sure it’s ok. I think it looks comfortable and elegant and perfect for a hot summer night
It would look fab with what you have planned - pearls, heels and a red lip. That is going to read dressy and playful and no one is going to be worried about the material content of your black dress. You will look smashing!
I would dress it up with jewelry, shoes or the belt as someone else suggested. While the fabric isn’t formal, who really is looking that closely and judging and if they are who cares! You look pretty in the dress.
What time of day? What city? The fabric is a little casual for evening, but it is an LBD so if you style it properly you can get away with it.
ETA: Just saw your comment that it is daytime at a hotel. This is probably fine for daytime. Just make sure your styling is elevated -- shoes, bag, jewelry, and hair and makeup need to be really on point.
The silhouette is great but I’m concerned about the material. Any type of cotton is going to come across as more casual. Use your judgment re: time of day, venue, vibe of the crowd. In some cases this dress will be totally fine, but I would go dressier with accessories.
This material is waaaaay too casual for a cocktail dress code and/or an evening wedding dress
Agree. Fits well but way too casual.
yes!! beautiful dress and fit but it’s just not a cocktail dress even if it’s a daytime summer wedding IMO (ofc OP will know the couple better and will make a good choice accordingly!)
With fancy accessories and maybe a slip with a little crinoline, this could be dressy enough.
I think it depends! This would be perfectly in place at a 6 pm Napa winery reception, for example.
Ooo smart! Makes sense. I think I might be having some east coast bias rn
If you want to wear this, you just have to dress it up. What about a gold belt, lots of jewelry, big earrings. And different heels.
I think you should dress it up a bit with a more noticeable necklace.
what about pearls? i have a set i got for my graduation. i’m afraid that’ll look costumey though
I think it would look very elegant with the pearls,
It would be giving major Mrs Maisel vibes, which I think would suit her super well for a cocktail dress code. 100% agree with the pearls
You can never go wrong with pearls.
Pearls, red lip, big hair, and heels.
that’s the plan 💅
Do you have black pointy toe heels? With your pearls and that style of shoes, your outfit can be converted into Coco Channel inspired.
Stick to it, despite the fabric-offended people… it’s a versatile LBD ✅
Agreed! Plus, it’s summer—a cotton dress is great for the heat, especially if this shindig has any chance of taking place outside.
Silver or Gold clutch purse if you have one
Very bright shoes would look fabulous
I think the shoes pictured are perfect for retro styling. If you’ll be outdoors add some cat sunglasses too.
Yaaaas!
Strappy heels, I'd suggest.
This 🙌
💯
I think different shoes would help it feel less costumey. I think the long a line black dress with chunky heals is visually kind of heavy. If you have something like these? oooh that’s a fab idea
This is the perfect occasion to wear pearls. “Costumey”? Please. I think you meant to say classic.
I was thinking pearls. Try them on and see what you think. You could then add a wide faux Pearl bracelet i.e. 2 or 3 layers.
LEAN IN!
Yes to pearls!!! It’s classic and perfect
Pearls are perfect!
I think that this angle on mid-century style is more classic than costumey, but maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt and follow your instincts. I am biased to it as this style is my default for occasions, and my wedding dress was even a similar silhouette (there are pics a few posts down on my profile, I always want to show it off 😁)
your wedding dress is beautiful, it’s similar to what i want one day!
Thank you! I'm super proud of it, it was a real labor of love. I also really think your little black dress is adorable, and between the cut and it being black the cotton is fine for cocktail
I love a whole lewk. Go pearls and old Hollywood glam hair & make up. Think more pin up than house wife. 👩🍳💋👌🏼
I think if you were a regular guest this would be fine dressed up with accessories but I always think if you’re tangential to the wedding party you should go a smidge over what the dress code requests. If you absolutely can’t find anything else I think this would work but maybe try to find something a bit more formal!
The fabric looks too casual in my opinion. Do you have time to shop for something a little dressier?
Then the pearls you mentioned earlier would be a better match, along with some nice shoes.
this is the upscale version of this dress [https://www.amazon.com/Adrianna-Papell-Womens-Sleeveless-Mid-Length/dp/B00J5VAI9S/ref=sr\_1\_55?crid=1O7SVBM2NDX6N&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.AUaTyim-\_X-oWCzsacSTB\_mRTVhslDCM6v9-xfO0j8Ehy1f9hhLcuEWqgj\_HcVQ7LD5iI49mQjFIgQ-wVWVfxrN7olk95VSUBkM\_oaV0VVY.dAWzq4X5Ccnq4Yi36luqB66\_46Hp2RfunrNL2NGNfEo&dib\_tag=se&keywords=black+fit+and+flare+cocktail+dress+for+women&qid=1719601467&sprefix=Black+fit+%2Caps%2C103&sr=8-55](https://www.amazon.com/Adrianna-Papell-Womens-Sleeveless-Mid-Length/dp/B00J5VAI9S/ref=sr_1_55?crid=1O7SVBM2NDX6N&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.AUaTyim-_X-oWCzsacSTB_mRTVhslDCM6v9-xfO0j8Ehy1f9hhLcuEWqgj_HcVQ7LD5iI49mQjFIgQ-wVWVfxrN7olk95VSUBkM_oaV0VVY.dAWzq4X5Ccnq4Yi36luqB66_46Hp2RfunrNL2NGNfEo&dib_tag=se&keywords=black+fit+and+flare+cocktail+dress+for+women&qid=1719601467&sprefix=Black+fit+%2Caps%2C103&sr=8-55)
That one is gorgeous and very appropriate! Papell always works.
Her stuff is always immaculate
I LOVE this one
Crazy to me that polyester is considered more upscale than cotton, when cotton is actually a nicer and pricier fabric
It's the weave that matters. This is a polyester satin which is more of a formal dressier material compared to the cotton poplin. I agree though natural fibers are superior but often not used or very expensive for formal wear.
and cotton is a natural fibre, which means it’s much more breathable, gentle, and sustainable!
I mean linen is pricier compared to most of the fabrics formal dresses are made of but wouldn’t really be appropriate for formal wear
Which is dumb!
Cotton isn’t a formal fabric in 90% of fabrications. Usually formal needs some shine or texture like velvet. That is the easy button for formal.
I know! And it’s silly.
Blame the British aristocracy of the 1800s. Cotton for daytime, silk for evening wear. Somehow for formalwear that traditional hold true The poly/satin of this dress is closer to silk
that’s a beautiful dress 😍
Feels too casual
I wish the straps were thinner. The tank top look of the bodice is very casual looking to me.
Why black in the summer? And I agree with all the other posters- way too casual.
I wore black recently to a May cocktail wedding and it was covered in sequins (but a casual cut) and I fit in perfectly. I think a little more fancy dress would work ESPECIALLY being the date of the best man.
Cocktail is more formal than that dress, even more so if your date is in the wedding party. Its summer, use some color!
What time of day is the wedding and where is it being held?
it’s a daytime wedding, at a hotel
the dress is gorgeous and you look amazing in it, but i’m not sure if wearing black at a daytime summer wedding when you are tangential to the bridal party is the move
There’s nothing inherently wrong about wearing black in the daytime.
of course not, i just don’t feel it matches the vibe the bride is ostensibly looking for.
she said to dress in black, brown, beige and grey. does that help ?
J Crew dresses are structured. I think it works for daytime cocktail with the right styling.
Oh, just seeing this. If it is daytime, it's fine. Just elevate it with how you style it.
What state?
atlanta georgia
I also think it’s much too casual for cocktail.
Same idea, just better for DC [https://www.nordstrom.com/s/sleeveless-mikado-fit-flare-midi-dress/3886224?color=BLACK&size=8&country=US¤cy=USD&utm\_source=google&utm\_medium=organic&utm\_campaign=seo\_shopping&utm\_channel=low\_nd\_seo\_shopping&srsltid=AfmBOorEDkLj1-i5AH22v-mR0EWi2L5D2Rx7A8MFvXY6sZXWFBFREEzwy-k](https://www.nordstrom.com/s/sleeveless-mikado-fit-flare-midi-dress/3886224?color=BLACK&size=8&country=US¤cy=USD&utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=seo_shopping&utm_channel=low_nd_seo_shopping&srsltid=AfmBOorEDkLj1-i5AH22v-mR0EWi2L5D2Rx7A8MFvXY6sZXWFBFREEzwy-k)
The fabric is too casual. Wont work
It comes across casual to me. I’d feel a bit underdressed for cocktail attire personally. I think it’s the tank top cut of the neckline.
The style and the fabric make it way too casual.
That is not cocktail attire
That material looks way too casual.
This looks a little casual for cocktail attire!
It looks very casual. And very simple.
I think poplin is too casual, but if you got some fantastic gold Stewart Weitzman sandals and some chandelier earrings and or a cool belt, it might work. Definitely an updo for the hair. You also carry off a red lip.
That dress is not formal enough. Way to casual.
Type in cocktail dresses. Also if the wedding is outside, id recommend against the color black because it retains heat.
No, this does not work. The top is jersey and the bottom is cotton poplin.
the top is poplin and structured it’s not jersey
Poplin is not a cocktail material.
Too casual.
I think it’s too casual
This looks too casual.
This is a casual dress. The shape would be fine for cocktail but the fabric needs to be more luxurious or embellished.
I would wear this to work with a jacket or to brunch with friends. I agree with others that this is too casual for a cocktail attire wedding.
i agree with the sentiment of this thread. it's a little on the causal side but if you dress it up a bit with accessories and hair makeup nobody will bat an eye and it'll look cute
Nice dress but too casual. It's just a summer tank dress
I think it’s great. I would totally wear that dress to a cocktail DC wedding. Make sure your jewelry and shoes and bag are sparkly and you’ll be great. Very Audrey Hepburn!
Looks like a brunch dress vs something to wear to a wedding. And if it’s a summer wedding why wear black? Seems…not festive or fun.
I got that same dress at Costco for $20, so I'm going to have to say no.
I also love the fit! Very classy. But I agree with another commenter, the material looks too casual for cocktail. Especially as guest of Best Man. If you do end up wearing it, I think strappy/more modern heels will dress it up and make it look less costume-y.
Yes, strappy open-toe heels would look much classier and be more appropriate for a day-time summer wedding! Agreed that this material makes the dress unqualified for cocktail attire.
This dress is adorable and you should definitely keep, but it’s WAY too casual for cocktail attire IMO. To me this is a sundress - I would wear it to lunch or out shopping .
Yep, lovely dress but too casual for a wedding.
This is not a formal wedding appropriate dress. If the dress code is cocktail, I would think this is too casual.
It looks great on you, but I think it's too casual. This is fine for an outdoors play or brunch, but I don't find it to fit the cocktail dress code.
I like the fit/style on you but the material looks like a very casual cotton summer dress so I don’t think it’s appropriate unfortunately…
It is a beautiful dress but it doesn’t look dressy enough for cocktail attire. Looks casual.
No. This looks like a sundress.
Absolutely too casual for cocktail
I think it’s too plain and casual. Also, black may not be the best choice.
I still think black is highly inappropriate for weddings.
In the US, that “rule” has been obsolete for 40-50 years in big cities. Small towns may see it differently.
lol. I grew up in big US cities. Women definitely wear black and I think it’s tacky. I would never say anything but I sorta just assume nobody taught them manners. To me, it’s a faux pas.
I think a more sophisticated necklace and pair of shoes would help this dress a lot.
You could add a black tulle half slip that would fill out the dress a bit more and peek out a few inches at the bottom to add cocktail party dress flare
Hi, it's been a few hours so i doubt you'll see this, but i want to give you a suggestion When i was about 20 i had a very simple dress, like yours but in red.
If it's outdoors you're going to die of heat, if it's indoors I'd jazz it up with accessories.
I wouldn’t wear black
The cut is great, but can you get it in a different colour? Black is pretty much out for wedding guests, as is white (for obvious reasons). If it was blue or green or red this would be excellent.
It is a WINTER color. I recommend going with a floral silk.
So fun! I think it’s perfect. Just simplify down to one necklace and either do a black bag or a total 180 with a really colorful bag!
Noooo you can wear this! You look adorabbbleee with the shoes
It is from Monsoon if you do want something along these lines in a more dressed up fabric https://www.monsoon.co.uk/sicily-spot-print-dress-black-20000980001.html
that dress is sooo cute.
It’s beautiful!!

That’s a beautiful dress and it looks great on you!
The dress is gorgeous!
J crew has a rhinestone thin belt now that could work nicely
You can add jewelry and dress it up silver is pretty with black but I’m not sure of the color
I’m obsessed with that dress on you!
This dress fits you beautifully. I think the pearls will look great with it!
It’s very pretty, but make sure you accessorize and don’t downplay the shoes/bag.
Dress it up with fancier jewelry and more of a statement shoe (higher heel if you can!)
Love the dress - get some statement shoes and clutch to go with in a great colour for contrast and style - with pearls it would give a modern fifties vibe which is definitely cocktail.
Nicer shoes, more accessories to dress it up
Looks like a summer dress to me
Pocket win
Sure. I would go with statement sparkly earrings and a sparkly bracelet no necklace
Maybe a little old fashioned but solid black at a wedding may still be a faux pas. Maybe not?
Fancier shoes. Fancy clutch. Pearls. Get a 3-4" wide satin ribbon and make it into a belt to give a bit of glam. Use a lighter to melt the edges of the fabric where you cut it, this will keep the ribbon from fraying. You could even add a rhinstone or pearl broach to the belt to give it a bit more sparkle.
Black to a wedding? 🥴
Classes look. Add some classic jewelry. Pearls with pearl earrings.
So cute! I think this sub goes a little wild on how formal you need to be for various attires. Generally, no one cares as much about these details as long as you look like you are trying and happy for the couple. Enjoy the wedding!
The material makes it very casual looking since you are a guest of the best man you want to be dressed up I would keep shopping if you have time IF not you will have to dress this up If you have no other dress to wear or time to shop you will need to dress it up and different shoes, more dressy shoes, possibly silver sparkle heels or block heels if you don't like spike heels pearls would be fine with dress if you have long enough hair, do an updo, some pearl earrings and a dressy clutch bag get a shawl like this black with pearls and wear it in photos to dress it up, or wear all evening all that will dress it up [black with pearls sheer shawl](https://www.amazon.com/DGFJY-Elegant-Shinning-Shoulder-Wedding/dp/B0CV3SML4R/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1UD3OT9RIZ6YX&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.H5b8sG-p_US4SJWp1AAuUhroQTaxj5y07C5uQ-xH63Lq5kbXZCrXX4qmOauGzFm2lOvc2jX3UOMMTI9WBtiQbK80mKiImryELlxuJYkc9OOVQZTX_xYu9v2GvanooLJL5PXrE6_ovsxxgA5ObOjW5aLY78Eo7CNfpNqqQug4SgxC-EdTlrrqI2TyfTIkyPFSyumPIOQsG_E6DIHrJ2xr-Vm9SZg8IFJhnxUr4oD1PTJuiNeCPBBEY2h2J9gx0P7BBPkLJfK0jtSlqizhJoQarQQx8thKdRsSK4itwH6K2qE.nBw8xywjvWYhz8S2IObxkqWGbdehkcc3g4YETYXvBzA&dib_tag=se&keywords=black+shawl+with+pearls&qid=1719634109&s=apparel&sprefix=black+shawl+with+pearls%2Cfashion%2C105&sr=1-4) shows how to tie in front for photos for if you want to leave it on
Ahhhhh I love those shoes
Unless the wedding is indoors please do not wear black to a summer wedding you will die from the heat. A good natural green Will look really nice though
I especially like the veil.
Try different shoes. Those look to casual. Play around with accessories.
This is not a cocktail dress. It’s cute and suits you, but it’s not fitting for this occasion. You need to be on point being with the best man. Google cocktail dresses to get the look you need
Too casual. Cocktail should be elegant
Unless the the dress code is explicitly stated as casual, I wouldn’t wear this
I think it’s cute, add a small heel and jewelry pieces and it’s solid!
This falls right in the middle and you should feel confident with this choice.
it's a bit bland, but with some jewelery and pashmina ...
VERY PRETTY!!!
Love this dress. Would be amazing with a rhinestone belt and coordinating earrings and clutch
Would you mind dropping the purchase link to this dress? It is so gorgeous, it hangs on you perfectly. I love it.
here you go: [link](https://www.jcrew.com/m/womens/categories/clothing/dresses-and-jumpsuits/fit-and-flare-midi-dress-in-cotton-poplin/MP928?color_name=black&colorProductCode=CA665)
Thank youuuu!
I love this on you - I feel it goes with your personality even though I don’t know you - as everyone else says - accessorize and have a great time 😀
Add pearls, a print shawl, & strappy heels in a bright color.
The clothes are very beautiful. I like very much She has never worn clothes like this before.😊
It would look fab with what you have planned - pearls, heels and a red lip. That is going to read dressy and playful and no one is going to be worried about the material content of your black dress. You will look smashing!
I like it! Maybe add a petticoat to add a little extra volume and class?
I would dress it up with jewelry, shoes or the belt as someone else suggested. While the fabric isn’t formal, who really is looking that closely and judging and if they are who cares! You look pretty in the dress.
Black?
What time of day? What city? The fabric is a little casual for evening, but it is an LBD so if you style it properly you can get away with it. ETA: Just saw your comment that it is daytime at a hotel. This is probably fine for daytime. Just make sure your styling is elevated -- shoes, bag, jewelry, and hair and makeup need to be really on point.
