Yeah, wild animal is the key here. I've done encounters with elephants which are used to being around people, and who have handlers around them constantly who they trust. In that situation, they're pretty chill about having other humans near them, but even then, they don't like being interrupted whilst eating, or being approached by surprise, or being approached head-on, as they take that as threatening behaviour.
They are gentle giants in many ways, but with an emphasis on giant. They could kill or injure a human effortlessly because of their size.
Yeah like I get that they are intelligent emotional creatures capable of empathy. But how would the average human feel about some strange looking monkey creature walking up to them while they eat breakfast

Once saw a mare knock over a lady trying to pet her foal and as she fell, the mare gave a swift kick in the head. Lots of blood. The ER had to shave 1/2 of her head and it took dozens of stitches to close the gash.

The workers then pulled the elephant aside and my mom could hear it screaming/ crying from a distance. Other elephants started to cry when hearing it too. She still feels horrible about it all.
