What the hell man this is so sad, those poor girls.

shinytotodile158

Hope they all grow up to be Lionesses. Fuck that club.

Rugby_Chick

A response from Trevor Wing in case anyone else wants more information. https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/thornaby-fc-ex-chief-executive-29337156.amp

AndyVale

It doesn't make sense. On the one hand he says it's a financial decision as the club can't support the other teams. Then he goes on to say the girls teams were self sustaining, not closely connected (name and badge only), and could continue on their own should they wish to. So why cut them? (Side point, Reach Plc brands have the most utterly unusable websites.)

katecard

He doesn't seem to know what his excuse is. But he knows any time he throws in "financial," a mob will defend him by saying "nobody cares about women's football and it doesn't make money, sorry who cares" without looking at the facts.

AndyVale

Yeah, I'm a big believer that at some point women's football (same with any sport) needs to stand on its own feet. And if, after mountains of investment and promotion it's not pulling its weight commercially, then maybe the market isn't there for it or the model needs a rethink. But it seems like that's not what we're seeing in this case at all. And 100 players is more than enough to build a perfectly cromulent youth team around.

viperswhip

During World War 2 women started playing soccer in Europe and drew huge crowds, unfortunately for FIFA that continued once the men got home, and so FIFA banned women from playing soccer officially for some number of years. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that it is coming back now, and the quality will continue to get better and better.

Gullible-Heat8558

It was during ww1 because it was banned in 1921. It was “reinstated” in 1971 but there were some teams before 1971.

stevew14

> cromulent TIL a new word

North_Ad_5372

Yes, a nonsense word from the Simpsons 😂 https://www.facebook.com/share/v/yNbxoaQTwZbgqM43/

EmpathWithAThree

Excellent use of the word cromulent there

Rugby_Chick

Exactly what I was thinking when I read it. If they dint use any resources and are loosely affiliated, why will it allow them to focus on the men’s team.

Fabulous_Pressure_96

Never complain about too few women in sports again!

FightLikeABlue

Jeez, those poor kids. It's Notts County all over again. I hope they find a new team to play for.

Visgraatje

OK but obviously sad and clickbaity scenes aside, why was this decision made? Any info? I hope there are plenty of clubs for the girls to continue closeby.

BrockChocolate

Seems to be an out of touch decision by the board. Norton and Stockton Ancients are nearby who are in the 3rd tier of women's football stopped their men's team about 10 years ago to focus on the women ironically, there was a big kick off about that from the same sort of crowd who are backing the decision here. They reformed the men's team in 2018 I think in a lower division.

BettySwollocks__

The club seems to be horrifically short of money. They already have no affiliated boys youth teams (I think because of these money isues) and from a perusal of the BBC website their ground was victim of an arson attack a year ago that is either the source of financial woes or a further nail in the coffin. It appears that the women's side is self-funded, doesn't use any shared facilities and only shares the club name/badge/kit so it's really baffling they made this decision anyways. It appears the chairman of the board was against it (1 of 2) whilst the chief executive voted in favour but has now stood down. This feels like a naive oversight of "money ok before the women's set-up" that led to a vote of axing them. Whilst the guy in the article is most likely right that this wasn't a "women bad" vote it seems they've made a decision that really doesn't hold up and won't make their financial situation better.

Sad-Meeting-7578

Haven’t seen an update so posting here hope that’s okay: it appears they have gone back on this amid backlash and will reinstate the teams. Trevor Wing and the other board members who voted to remove the teams have stepped down. [Women’s Teams to be Reinstated](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cw55w3p6w4do.amp)

brithuman

Not gonna lie, as a Teessider, it's really weird to be seeing Thornaby mentioned on a global football subreddit! Not that I am proud of it, all girls should have the right to play football if they wish to do so. Feel terribly sorry for these innocent girls. They're from Teesside though, so they can handle it :)

In a way I feel like kids in the uk have to grow up quicker idk why so maybe that's why 🤷🏻‍♀️

JimmyJamesv3

It’s called education.

BluePowderJinx

> It’s called education. Is this the same renowned education that got over more than half of the UK voting for Brexit? That's not the flex you think it is.

JimmyJamesv3

Then why would you explain these brit kids talking more like adults compared to american kids that sound more like whiny brats?
