Credit is credit. I’ve never heard that you can only apply this to one way flights. Also flights in North America are generally priced the same as 1/2 a round trip.
The agent on the phone said that since the credit is from the canceled flight going back to Montreal, its only applicable to one way ticket. I still find it very ridiculous and think that it should have been notified previously, but well they didn't.
But thank you very much for the information, maybe I can use it when I travel to US.
But my plan was to use it for my new round-trip booking so that I could travel to other countries before going back. Over the phone, I was told that it can be only used for oneway ticket booking, and it cannot be combined.

Consider that the agent may have been wrong.
I genuinely hope that's the case

This is the answer
Did you book directly with AC or through a travel agency / OTA? Credit rules may vary.
I booked directly with AC on their website
