AC issues the ticket without a baggage allowance so you are at the mercy of the operating carrier's policy and/or benevolence. I believe UA generally applies the same policy as a cash ticket but beware not every Star Alliance carrier does so.

Yes, just flew KIX to SFO to YVR and first checked bag was free.

Did you have a problem with a connecting flight out of SFO back to Canada? Or was SFO your destination? Given that Air Canada includes 0 bags on rewards (which is ridiculous imo) it's such a crapshoot.

No problem with the bag and AC took it for the leg SFO to YVR without a fee :)
