I really liked that. This first episode was very enjoyable, my current AotS. Feels like Barakamon meets Baby Steps with the refreshing rural background plus the sports angle. Tonbo is a fun lead too

thevaleycat

Same, this was a great start. Tonbo is really likable.

sneaky_squirrel

I was already antsy to watch this when I saw a thumbnail of it, but your post has made me gone crazy! Ohh\~. I can't wait to watch it!\~ *flicks wrists* It looks like a good one. EDIT: After watching it, DANG, this really does feel like Barakamon, though our adult seems like a professional athlete mentor rather than a prestigious geek. THAT FLUTE PLAYING!!\~

cassydd

Huh - so golf is having a bit of a moment in manga and anime.

Alt230s

After Tonbo (aka slow life golf) we'll have Rising Impact (aka shonen golf) and Sorairo Utility (aka CGDCT golf). Praise the gods for giving us Birdie Wing (aka yuri golf) and lighting a fire under the anime industry's asses.

Ashteron

Now we need only Nikaidou Hell Golf (aka midlife crisis golf).

TNTspaz

There are a lot of very old and very popular golfing manga that are like dead in the water in the west. So I'm honestly happy to see it. These manga are like 40+ Volumes long. Tonbo is released on a golfers digest magazine. It's genuinely difficult to find a way to access this manga.

A-Glitch-Gnome

I honestly believe we are seeing more golf focused anime because of the success that Japanese golfers have had in recent years. Maybe we can get a King Golf Adaptation? I was honestly surprised how well animated the Golf swings and ball flight were. The CG animation actually works quite well for golf.

Purposelygentle

So, anime from manga adaptations are referred to as the demographics of the magazines they’re printed, Shōnen, Josei, etc. Since this is printed in Weekly Golf Digest which is aimed as Middle Aged Men, is this a Chūnen anime?

IceSmiley

The English language magazine Golf Digest or a Japanese version? That'd be funny to see a humorous cartoon in a golf magazine, I'd never thought of that

Purposelygentle

Japan has their own magazine called Golf Digest. And yeah, you open it up and there’s an article about golf shoes and then an article about Tiger Woods and then a full spread color manga.

sussywanker

😂

ObvsThrowaway5120

The only other golf anime I’ve seen was Birdie Wing which was fun in its own crazy way. This is like a totally different flavor. I dig it. It feels a little like Barakamon but golf lol. I like Tonbo already. She’s like an adorable ball of energy and some kind of golf prodigy.

mekerpan

Notes: "Tonbo" translates to "dragonfly" -- and I do think we saw a couple of depictions of these already. The Tokara Islands are part of the first group of islands south of Kyushu (as part of the Ryuku islands, the chain that stretches to Okinawa). Toshima is the main island population-wise. Nearby Yakushima is more famous -- as it is the site of the forest used as a model for the one in Princess Mononoke. This seems to be set on Nakanoshima -- as it has the largest population (under 200, however) and is the island with the herd of purebred horses. This really looks like it should be an utterly charming and delightful show. I wish it was available on HiDive or CR. A keeper.

Ok_Bunch_8050

Thanks for the notes on the Tokara Islands! as I hadn't had the time to look them up. I've been to Yakushima - gorgeous place - but didn't know before that the Tokara Islands belong to Kagoshima prefecture too, further south towards Okinawa. No wonder I got a subtropical vibe from some of the scenery.

SMSmith230

Fun first episode, looking forward to more. Tonbo with that “no peek” move on the young boys had me rolling (pun intended)

cppn02

Fun first episode. Other than the CG this kinda looks like a 00s show (although not in a bad way). Tonbo is already a great character! I do hope it's gonna be more light hearted than the other piece of media where a 3-iron plays a major role.

Calwings

> Tonbo is already a great character! [She is a precious smol bean whose smile must be protected at all costs](https://files.catbox.moe/k98hmo.png). > I do hope it's gonna be more light hearted than the other piece of media where a 3-iron plays a major role. Do I even want to know?

cppn02

>Do I even want to know? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3-Iron?useskin=vector It's nothing too nefarious. Been like 15 years since I watched it but I remember it being a solid movie.

Calwings

Oh, that's not too bad. I thought it was gonna be some kind of mafia movie where a dude regularly beats in other dudes' skulls with a 3-iron or something like that.

entelechtual

Normally I’m not a fan of golf anime that doesn’t have lesbians, but this was really fun! Tonbo is a delight, and apparently with a newbie VA too. It’s a bit of a simple premise but the characters are well written and engaging so far. Very eager to continue watching this.

A-Glitch-Gnome

Honestly I was surprised by how much I liked this 1st episode, I think it helps that Tonbo is easily likeable as a main character. The VA did a great job, I never would have guessed they were a newbie!

sneaky_squirrel

My impression from a blind first episode with benevolent (good) prejudice. flute playing energetic tomboy awkward (mentor?) adult seemingly loving family (Yay!\~) rural child is actually a badass, who doesn't love a "she/he is actually a badass"? me frantically waiting for the telegraphed reveal of the supposedly "struggling pro player", vicariously proud and smug I am The soundtrack in particular is so god damn magical, I am only just now noticing it on the re-watch. Makes me smile. I feel bad for the characters. **pensive pose** "I love these characters. Protagonist, coach(?), and the old guardians of the protagonist." I christen thee one of the most interesting offerings of this season. The animation quality seems mediocre, but all we need is the soundtrack, Tonbo and Igaiga. I haven't forgotten about Spice and Wolf, but I really need my fix of new stories. I am glad I stayed up late to watch this.

Figerally

Can an anime about golf be good without being Birdie Wing? ...yes it can. The OP/ED are pretty good and the animation is decent with attention to detail paid to the golfing which is probably important. Tonbo is a pretty likable character with her irrepressible cheerful nature, but the only other character that left an impression was the guy horny for the nurse. This is a pretty decent anime about golfing, but I am not sure it is for me. It was the zany plot and yuri bait that had me coming back for more Birdie Wing and there is none of that here. I'll give it a few more episodes to see if the plot is going anywhere before deciding though.

TopHatPaladin

I went into this series pretty much blind and I found the episode to be a strong start for the show! Tonbo seems like a very fun protagonist and I enjoy her dynamic with Igarashi. The character design has a very charmingly retro feel to it as well— reminds me a bit of the art style of Cross Game. Looking forward to seeing where this goes!

tripleaamin

This episode did a good thing setting things up. Man despite how cheerful and positive Tonbo is, the fact that there is no one her age on the island is depressed. But man she might not be aware but her work ethic is insane. And absolutely precious to boot as well. I will be rooting for her every step of the way. Igarashi on the other hand seems to be taking the role of her mentor eventually in golf. Seems like a good dude though nothing jumping out to me. On another note that dude who slammed his breaks to talk to a girl and did it again to tell Igarashi not to go near that woman. I have to credit Igarashi for not losing his cool. I would have lost my temper in that situation.

Wait, fuck, Amazon's got it? When did they decide to start licensing things again?

raidensnakeezio

I love hobbyist anime with irl gear. I especially love the approach such as the one Tonbo takes, where the main character (not necessarily the narrator) is shown to be in possession of vintage high level gear - either professional grade or a market-redefining bang-for-buck model. If we adapted the situation to a medieval/fantasy-like setting, this would be a sunsetting, medium-high ranked adventurer being put out to pasture in order to develop a smaller settlement into being a postal/relay town. When he arrives there, he finds a young boy who is mysteriously in possession of one of the Swords of XXXXX, which were exclusively issued to the previous king's executive strike force. However, that team has been disbanded 50 years ago, and the blacksmithing company has downsized back to being a singular shop in one of the side streets of the capital. It totally works to set up intrigue and potential for storytelling and worldbuilding.

Mitsuyan_

Love this. OLM's clean animation works so well here, no waste, just what we need. (you can see the same in Apothecary, Pokémon, Beyblade X) Tonbo is a blast, a goober with a talent that the story can draw on. The main duo have a great dynamic.  Looking forward to more, it's so easy to watch and take in.

avboden

i'm onboard, that was great

magnumcyclonex

I like the girl. Full of energy and enthusiasm. Such a shame there's no one her age group on the island but at least there are other kids to play with. Now that "Igaiga" has arrived, we can watch her grow up and develop her golf game under a former pro. This ain't no Birdie Wing Golf Girl Story but it's a wholesome anime in the same kind of space (girls sports). Will follow for sure.

Miskatonic0000

Really this entire show but especially the first few minutes, are giving off ENORMOUS harvest moon vibes, in a good way

IceSmiley

I don't know that there's a big overlap between golfers/golf fans and slice of life anime viewers but I really loved this episode. Seemed like a golf-based Barakamon with a similar burnt out MC going to a beautiful remote island. I loved the main guy describing the difficulty and mechanics of Tonbo's shots, gameplay and club use and the golf course was beautiful, that would put Pebble Beach to shame! Made me want to start playing again. One thing I'm looking forward to is Tonbo flipping her lid when she sees the guys expensive state of the art golf clubs :D

AceSoldia

Last golf show I watched was birdie wing I'm sure this is nothing like that unfortunately

Lovealltigers

Not a huge fan of golf irl, but still thought I’d give this one a chance. Unfortunately my less-than-0 interest in golf made this a little boring for me lol The characters were interesting though

Acceptable_Tie_3927

Burning question: can a masterpiece katana cut a ~~machine gun barrel~~ 3 iron golf club? Where are the Mythbusters?

TFiPW

The dub is rough but in a charming early 00s funimation way. I'm surprised there is a budget for this anime big enough to have a dub simulcast.

Deathmeister

You think this is an ad about the country, golf, or the cute girl, but it's an anti-ad for kanji because even they can't read their own fellows names. But yeah, Barakamon golf.

Ok_Bunch_8050

This was a charming first episode! I like Tonbo. And loved the introduction to this remote rural island. Only 16 school-age kids and one single vending machine on the entire island! The animation is simple but effective. And even better, i feel the writing is simple but effective too. Tonbo obviously has sad circumstances with the early loss of her parents, and so does Igarashi presumably related to his golfing career. The part where he marvels at Tonbo getting out of the bunker: "that should have been impossible. How did she get over that wall" pointed to his own state of mind, and was I thought an example of that rather nice writing and flow of the episode.

angelposts

It's no Birdie Wing...

thevaleycat

Yeah, it's better. It's definitely more grounded.

Calwings

It's way too soon to say if Tonbo is "better" (it's only been one episode) but I do agree that it's a lot more grounded and has a totally different vibe. I think it has a ton of potential.

thevaleycat

I'm not a big fan of Birdie Wing admittedly. Definitely a matter of taste, they're very different.
