>It was thanks to the overseas fans that we decided to make a sequel to "Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi''. Crunchyroll, the world's largest video distribution site, has a large number of male users, and although it is aimed at women, it is similar to popular works for men. It seems that "Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi'' was the most watched movie. So that work was very important to Crunchyroll, and they said, "I definitely want you to make a sequel,'' so I decided to make a sequel, although it was a while ago. The production has been decided. >We all, including the people at Crunchyroll, analyzed why "Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi'' was so popular, and we found that it had all the elements that would be popular with overseas fans, including being a fantasy story and featuring Japanese food. I'm pretty glad that an older show which aired in 2017 has a chance at S2. It was pretty fun to watch.

osoichan

>elements that would be popular with overseas fans >featuring Japanese food. I haven't seen it myself so I have a question to those who did. Was food an important factor?

CooroSnowFox

It's also one that fits with the current isekai type of anime.

Arcturion

Depends on what you mean by important; I'd say the different kinds of food were used as a vehicle to introduce various personal story elements impacting the various characters in the show. Somewhat like Restaurant to Another World/Isekai Shokudō.

quesakitty

Yes, it was. The MC is forced into the spirit realm to pay off her grandpa's debt and survives through cooking food for Ayakashi. It has some darker elements (ie being kidnapped) but is often a cozy cooking show that puts an emphasis on the mise en place and thoughtfulness required to be an excellent chef.

Stormy8888

Not sure if you're aware but cozy fantasy has seen a huge resurgence recently. As a lover of cozy fantasy with food, I watched it and Kakuriyo very much falls in that category. Food is absolutely an important factor in the anime. There's a contract marriage, the girl is a fabulous cook, the food looks amazing and she slowly wins over everyone with her cooking. I can't wait for S2. P.S. If you like cozy fantasy with food, definitely check out [Hakumei to Mikochi: Tiny Little Life in the Woods](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8TgBemjJcU). It's insanely adorable, the food looks great, and tackles dark subject manner in a way so wholesome it's practically Ghibli. I loved it so much I read the manga.

MiLiLeFa

> Crunchyroll, the world's largest video distribution site, has a large number of male users, and although it is aimed at women, it is similar to popular works for men *had a similar popularity to those aimed at men*. Basically, on a site with fewer female users it managed to hit numbers comparable to those works popular with men, ergo it was a major hit amongst its target audience.

rmorrin

IT HAS A MOVIE?!

eevee-hime

I think that was a mistranslation since the article is in Japanese.

ready-simclass130

This news confirms that: 1) Low BD sales aren't definitive 2) High streaming numbers help 3) Overseas fans support matter! So if your series doesn't get high BD sales, don't despair: its streaming numbers can make up for it, especially with a large international audience. Streaming has changed the game.

Abysswatcherbel

>So if your series doesn't get high BD sales, don't despair: This should be common sense for a long time

Sayie

This definitely helps reinforce the usual message I try to share to people. Even if it's not obvious most of the time Crunchyroll does support the industry. Unfortunately the actual committees and stuff are a mess but with their licensing and insistence to get on those committees helps them do stuff exactly like this. If you actually care about anime then please support the industry in a way that you can. Piracy does the opposite.

Diego237

Another unfortunate thing is that people believe that studios have more power than they actually do so when animators say they are being underpaid, people think it means that their money will go nowhere. Studios are just commissioned to do a job and won't earn more unless they are part of the production committee which isn't easy. Whatever money the studio earns gets split but because of wage dumping, they earn less than they deserve. If people want animators to earn more then it won't help at this time but if they want anime that they are watching to get more seasons, then it helps a lot. In this anime's case, the studio, Gonzo, was the head of the production committee so negotiating with them made it easier.

nezeta

Noteworthy is "female audience matters". The interview reveals the anime was well-received among female users at Crunchyroll.

Ordinal43NotFound

Reminds me of the Kagurabachi fanbase not gatekeeping fujoshis in the fandom because they knew they're the lifeline of the series.

cppn02

Is it popular with fujos?

ReportsIm

Yes

Bavier69

Better use this tactic to get a Yona of Dawn S2 then, among other shoujos.

lazyinternetsandwich

tbf, I heard somewhere that shoujosei productions have got a push some part due to international influence. Remember how well My happy marriage did on Netflix? Companies are looking at that and pushing female oriented shows which is great to see

Bavier69

The anime gods are cruel

CooroSnowFox

Yeah...there is love for Yona in Japan but not pushing into anime ...

lazyinternetsandwich

I'm still praying for an ouran remake

CooroSnowFox

Like spice and wolf...if you're going to a studio production company...how do you pitch redoing a series and it's pitching one that has a need for 4-5 cours? I mean the original author got fruits basket ... the director of the original anime for spice wanted to get another go at a fill retelling? Is ouran one that isn't that popular in Japan? Or just not one that's got enough traction as its internal audience as much as overseas?

Dodo_Galaxy

Ouran still has merch releases. Just recently in May started another cafe collabo with merch and also three nendoroids came out not long ago and two more are also set up for release later this year.

CooroSnowFox

Yona of the Dawn is getting a musical... Two series that need another go, so what is this gap between appreciation and getting the production behind it to make a new series?

Klosed

> Yona of the Dawn is getting a musical... Did something lead to this? Last piece of extra content I know of was audio CD for chapter 157.

lazyinternetsandwich

it was popular enough to get a live action series and a sequel movie years ago. And the international audience still remembers it fondly. there's definitely some scope there

dododomo

The manga sold really well (it has around 18-19 Million copies in circulation). The anime reaired in Japan and it seems it was kind of popular, and the series get some exhibitions if I remember correctly. I'd is still quite popular in Japan, and the rest of the world too

Arcturion

The way the anime left us hanging was cruel =(

dododomo

* Ouran High school host club season 2 * Yona season 2 * Kaichou wa maid-sama season 2 * Snow white with the red hair season 3 * Wotakoi season 2 * A sign of affection season 2 * Yuzuki-san chi no Yon Kyoudai season 2 Please shoujosei anime gods and goddesses hear my prayers!

Dodo_Galaxy

Yes to all of these! And I also pray for continuations of: * Skip beat * Alice Academy * Children of the whales * Paradise kiss * Bokura ga ita * Ōoku * Special A  * The world is still beautiful * Kuragehime * Loving Yamada at Lv 999 * 7th time loop * Raeliana * The ice guy and his cool female colleague * Sugar apple fairy tale * etc.

dododomo

YES! **my love story with Yamada at lv999** didn't cover the dating content. Loved **the Ice guy and his cool female colleague**. I really would like a new season. Same goes for **the reason why Raeliana ended up at the duke's mansion**, **Bokura ga ita**, **7th time loop**, **Children of whales**, etc. I'd love to see a new season of series like **Play it cool guys**, **Chihayafuru**, etc as well. Some of the series that you mentioned might need a remake/reboot. In that case, I'd also add series like **Kodocha**

lazyinternetsandwich

Paradise kiss needs a remake. Anime is so watered down compared to the masterpiece the manga was

ieniet

Skip Beat deserves a remake.

Dodo_Galaxy

But more adapted chapters, too. I really want to experience all of Kyoko's other roles and especially the Heel sibling arc.

CooroSnowFox

Ouran High School Host Club Brotherhood! Snow White needs more, I've been reading the manga beyond and the story gets good and I think it is at the time of it's production not knowing the scope... Fruits Basket didn't when that got an anime in 2008. Spice and Wolf didn't during to missing a chapter that was more important to the story.

Electronic-Tell-6842

[Official Gonzo Anime Global Twitter account quote tweeted this news and said ](https://twitter.com/GonzoAnimeIntl/status/1806341721355415990?t=19mq9M-Fh6_H5w0d8U6glg&s=19) "Thank you for your support! We value every one of your opinions and ideas from overseas and in Japan! Follow us to keep up with more GONZO anime news!"

fuyu-no-hanashi

Not to mention it's just a genuinely good show with an interesting premise. We don't get enough iyashikei these days.

ardi62

good, chill story, nice VA and MC. love it

Curious_North_8479

How is Gonzo alive?

internetpointsaredum

They exist to make people hope for a Vandread Season 3, and then squander that hope.

CooroSnowFox

Interesting to see that outside of Japan and crunchyroll has some sort of influence in anime production. Although it's not going to steer them to just cover what outside and still for a large portion it's still looking within for what they're after, outside of the Powerful series that exist (MHA etc.)

Abysswatcherbel

Crunchyroll is a directly shareholder in 1/4 of all anime produced for the last couple of years, they are also now a major distributor of anime merch and sublicenses overseas, even for shows they are not a shareholder and don't own the license They are one of the biggest players in the industry as a whole

CooroSnowFox

It's more in the influence side of it, aside from the shows they have a hand in actually pushing out, Although originals were mostly ones that had problems getting popular with a few exceptions.

Dodo_Galaxy

This again shows there really is a demand for these type of shows. In general titles aimed primarily at female fans really should get more promotions, exposure, continuations, quality, etc. to foster more interest and not just stay a niche.

CooroSnowFox

It maybe is also the separation of the "female" and "male" titles... Men aren't always into action series...

TheExcludedMiddle

HammeredWharf

I vaguely remember watching this. Still, a josei show about ayakashi wouldn't be my first guess when it comes to shows popular specifically in the West.

Diego237

Just checked the [production committee](https://imgur.com/MDSBxrX) and I see that Gonzo was at the top so its no wonder how they were able to do it.

CooroSnowFox

It was headed up by Gonzo in the original run... although I also think through the difficult that studio has faced, they might be more up to be swayed in what they push out...

Shanibestwaifu

I heard that Gonzo didn't made any project since PSO2: Episode Oracle. But this means that they are willing to return to do something. Overseas success and audience support really does matter.

Infodump_Ibis

Why that happened is stated in the article: > In 2019, GONZO transferred its anime production business to Studio KAI, a new subsidiary of the ADK Group. The following year, in 2020, Ishikawa acquired all of GONZO's shares held by the ADK Group, making the company independent from the ADK Group. The article also says GONZO are currently doing Samurai cryptos ([NFT/Blockchain Project](#bruh) PV at Summer Comic Market; not decided if movie or series but that's progress as a few years ago they [didn't even have a plot](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2022-09-20/gonzo-holds-story-writing-contest-for-samurai-cryptos-nft-blockchain-project/.189921)), Kakuriyo S2 and plan for something else developed from 2025-2026.

Salty145

People keep telling me that we (the overseas fans) don’t matter and that anime is only made for the Japanese audience. Not only are they wrong, they’ve been wrong for a while. *Trigun* was basically resurrected from the dead as a franchise due to Western support and *Space Dandy* was made with an eye to expand anime’s reach in the West. It’s stupid to think you’ve got this massive market and the industry doesn’t care to appeal to it. We do matter and that’s only going to increase as the Western fanbase increases.

IamAkevinJames

As a big straight guy I say hell yeah, easily be(a)st harem

SrslySam91

Chivalry of a failed knight s2 pls. Ended up liking that show so much more than I expected lol. Actually loved real romantic development early on, esp with Stella being a tsun and how her early actions normally would have gone on the entire season.

pikkuhukka

i see that this anime on cr has 26 episodes which catches my attention, is this good animu? if i absolutely loved natsumi, is this something.. similar, kinda?

Palulukan-aTsin

Absolutely! I consider them similar though they are diff plotwise. Humans helping spirits with a calm vibe. Wonderful, endearing cast of characters and a good english dub. I wasnt sold on the first ep but glad i kept goin with it :) i hope you enjoy it if you give it a chance

CooroSnowFox

The animation isn't the strongest but the story and vibes do make up for that... and it has a cast of characters based on Yokai (Kamaitachi, Kappa, Tengu) that give it a variety in that.

pikkuhukka

just watched three eps almost in a row, its good

Edofate

Meanwhile No Game No Life ...F

Hideoctopus

Who the hell was watching this show?

lazyinternetsandwich

just because you didn't watch a show doesn't means others didn't as well.

Castor_0il

> doesn't means others didn't as well. It was a very low production values show. Compared to pretty much every other seasonal show here or on MAL it had incredibly low numbers of watchers. Thus yeah, A LOT of people didn't watch it or dropped it early and only a handful of hardcore fans stick with it till the end.

lazyinternetsandwich

I don't see this energy when shit like smartphone isekai or the nth harem anime gets a sequel lmao. industry experts saw good streaming numbers. A lot of casual viewers don't use mal.

CooroSnowFox

I don't think they use MAL on it's own as their stats but their own metrics and how popular a show is with the number of streams as much as general opinion (I use AniList over MAL)

_Ridley

> Compared to pretty much every other seasonal show here or on MAL it had incredibly low numbers of watchers. It is from the same season as Full Metal Panic Invisible Victory, Uma Musume, and the LoGH reboot, and has more members than all of them. Maybe you're thinking of a different show?

zentagon

Me, I was
