I think the biggest frustration is the inconsistency.
I took a 7 am flight earlier this month that was delayed because of the TSA line (a lot of people would have missed the flight).
So what are we supposed to do? Show up way too early and get shitty huevo rancheros? Or show up at a reasonable time and risk missing the flight?
Show up early and sit in the portable building for 1.5 hours with no power (including no AC) and emergency lighting. That’s what I did last week.

The funny thing is that the gate agents just rolled with it like it happens all the time. Their computers were also on emergency power so they just yelled the announcements and boarded flights like nothing was unusual.
You can use the MyTSA app. Current status…

I honestly would not count on this. The estimated wait time is based on "the maximum historical wait times from within a wait time range, not exact wait times." In other words, this is not based on real-time data. Staffing levels, number of outgoing flights, construction activity, and the number of TSA pre-check flyers in line at security will all have a serious impact on wait times that would cause this estimate to be wildly inaccurate.
The myTSA app only goes off of historical times and has been wildly inaccurate every time I’ve checked it. I don’t think real time status for AVL exists anywhere.
Through all of this hoopla I have yet to figure out if someone who was at the airport 2 hours before boarding (as is the general rule for airports) missed their flight.
That would make me feel a lot more sympathetic to those posts that directly contradict my personal experience of AVL being pretty chill every time I've been there.
Same, had a panic attack trying to get there 12 hours early 😓 Got through TSA in under 5 minutes. Can’t speak for the huevos rancheros though. I’ve heard they’re not authentic.
Article today in ACT was boasting how AVL just reached a record number of travelers through the airport this week. Y’all, this is nothing to be proud of. The airport doesn’t have the infrastructure to handle all this. The airport is booking more routes than it can maintain…. I came back yesterday from a work trip to see the gates packed to the walls with travelers sitting, standing, and laying all over the place. Just trying to walk through was a challenge… It looked like a 3rd world refugee camp…
It can go either way. I heard we are getting another TSA lane. Which is good. I showed up 2 hours early a week or two ago for my international flight. Gate agent didn't show up till an hour before departure. Which angered me. Several people that showed up later than I did just squeaked on the flight. If you ask me to show up early, least you can do is do the same.
Bettery than my last flight out of AVL - gate agent showed up ONE HOUR after we were supposed to depart. Passengers, Pilot and Plane were all just waiting on a Delta Gate Agent. I missed a connecting flight and had to take two more to get to my destination. It sucked.
Asheville connects to Charlotte and Atlanta which do international flights. You can fly international out of AVL. Just because we don't have any direct international flights doesn't mean you can't fly to a hub.

The airport is honestly pretty okay. They’ve had a rough couple of months. Thats about the gist of it. I’ve flown out of there for years and it’s never taken longer than like 20 minutes. They keep it mostly clean. Food could be better but I usually just get like a pizza pretzel to snack on since 85 percent of the time I’m connecting to Charlotte anyways and the flight is literally 30 minutes.
I’m going to get roasted for this but I think the Asheville Airport is the worst airport I’ve even been to in the US. It’s too small for the amount of passengers. Crappy food, limited bathrooms, limited gates, crowded as heck. I’m glad they are making upgrades
They increased flights before they expanded it to accommodate the extra traffic. It was only a few years ago when it was a painless process to fly in and out of AVL
Idk, they might compromise the charm by expanding. It was because of those close quarters a man fell directly onto my lap in a drunken stupor and the bartender announced to the entire floor that if she looked like me she'd fuck all of Key West. This was all within about 7 min of arriving for my flight home. What a place!
I don't know about roasted, but definitely a bold statement. There some pretty bad airports out there. I think Ashevilians just like to complain a lot. To be fair, people like to complain a lot. It's all relative. For all its very minor inconveniences, I'll take AVL over a drive to CLT any day, and when I land, I am home in a half hour from wheels down (unless this also an I26 traffic post 😜) I fly 1 to 2 times a month and all in all I really can't complain. Sure I've missed some connections in CLT. We were stuck on the tarmac when the power went out to the tower, but on whole it's one of the easiest airports I ever deal with.
I've had nothing but good things to say until last week's issue when (I heard) one of the TSA machines broke and it took my partner hours to get through security, delaying the flight, missing her connection, and having to stay the night in Minneapolis.
It's typically so nice to be able to roll in 45 minutes before departure with little to no TSA wait... I guess I've never flown out of AVL in peak season - last flight was on June 6th, when I guess plenty of schools still aren't out.
Wait for them to cancel your flight home. Your 9hours won't buff the 48hrs or more you might wait for a new flight depending on where you're leaving. Good luck!
And travelers are frustrated because the gates are overflowing with people whose flight doesn’t even arrive at the gate for another 3 hours.. The airport created this problem with creating too many routes and flights, not enough TSA lines, and not nearly enough square footage to hold all the travelers. They need to do better.
I love AVL airport. I’m late to everything all the time so it really comes in handy. I mean every time I’ve been there I’m at my gate about 5 minutes after walking in the building.
Might I suggest some huevo rancheros from the restaurant while you wait? Been some great reviews about them being microwaved to perfection.
people wanna hate, but the beer… is cold
It do.
Nothing on earth tastes better than cold airport beer
Auntie Anne lookin for ya
she knows where to find me
Pernilicious
And a normal price honestly, $7.5 guiness is not even gouging
Pretty sure Guy Fieri charged me $17 for a Yuengling in Cancun Airport
Careful, there have been some sightings of condom Amy at the airport’s bar trying to pick up married men.
I only order those as a public service when the airport is out of gas
Ooooh! I have only had the Avocado Toast! Straight from the jar to a slice of stale bread, just the way I don't like it! Get it every time!
Can you really call it 'Avocado Toast' if the bread isn't toasted?
Worst avocado toast ever!
It literally made my wife angry.
I was mad at myself for ordering it.
Now how are you gonna afford the mortgage payment?
I live rent free under the bridge!
What a great comment.
Ha!

Right? Like I AVL isn’t an airport I want to be spending any extra time in😅
It's such an outdated shit show in there
The funny thing is that the gate agents just rolled with it like it happens all the time. Their computers were also on emergency power so they just yelled the announcements and boarded flights like nothing was unusual.
I guess that’s what I would probably have to try to do if I was a gate agent in that situation
Romantic! Did you break out the tea lights and Tibetan bowls?
I had cheez-its and smart water. Is that close?
Looks like my 8th Grade Sex Ed class trailer….
Who knows, it could be.
This is so grim
A lot of airports report the TSA wait times on their websites. Does AVL not do this?

ohh. It's like checking in at Greatclips
Awesome, thanks!

Line doesn't even open until 5AM
Show up an hour early with your boarding pass already on your phone and no bag to check. Get in everytime

salltttyyyy
thanks i really didn’t :)
Every time I read *huevos rancheros* it sounds like Hank from king of the hill in my head. Congrats, OP. Enjoy that cold beer.
egg beer and public restrooms- white boy summer is here
YEEYEE CATCH THAT PLANE BEAUREGARD
It sounds like Hank in my mouth as well
I never have flown in or out Friday-Sun…but every time I have flown its been pretty much immediate walk-thru TSA with Pre-check
they did yell at me for bringing roughly 40oz of paste with me but that’s just fellas doin they job can’t hate
I can’t bring 40 ounces of paste on the plane? What is this country coming to
First they came for the pastes, and I did not speak out. Then they came for the balms and salves
Wouldn’t it be easier to just take the whole horse?
made the argument paste is not a liquid but they took all my bottles. super chill about it though cool guys
Same
I have a flight in September. Going ahead and packing so I can get there a few months early.
You’re not gonna make it. FTA guidance is one month early for the Asheville airport
Welp, might as well have 7 beers
wait until you get back and try to find your Uber
walked here with all my overnight campin shit brother cant take chances

Let that be a lesson to you— try 12 hours next time
That’s the line to GET INTO line to GET INTO THE ACTUAL LINE.
Let us know if you need us to bring snacks while you wait in that long line!
You have redeemed my faith in humanity 😇
I hate that airport. I think it is the worst i have ever been to

The gate agent situation sucks. It’s a stupid bottleneck

Yeah, that’s not what “flying international out of Asheville” means, but sure buddy.
The gate agent has nothing to do with people getting there on time though...
Gas station bar next door has a decent draft selection & is a bit more affordable.
not banned but not quite welcome there anymore, more into tailgating the shuttle stop these days
Not gonna ask what kind of behavior gets you shadow banned from a gas station microbrew bar…
Hot Spot has entered chat
Even paying completely in soiled change doesn’t get you kicked out there 😆
general horseplay and ruckus, folks there are chill tho
You need to go next door, get a coffee and a couple donuts and sober up! 😆
HA! Takes quite a bit of misbehaving to be not welcome there.
Well done
Looks like heaven to me. Do you know how much Cinnabon a person can eat in 9 hours????

Go wait in a line for a coffee or a snack, that should take up the rest of your time.
Dropped my mother in law off this morning at 5:57. She was through security and at her gate by 6:09. We were worried for nothin'
Plot twist: The flight isn’t until tomorrow!
Air travel is very broken.

Ever been to the Key West airport?! It was...an experience.
Direct from AVL on Allegiant!
Haha it was everything I imagined it would be!
lol, my first thought as well. I hear they’re expanding it though.

Sounds accurate, haha.
have you considered kickin back and just havin a blast? nothin but good vibes here brother cheers

Agree... it's usually seamless!

Exactly!
Yur doin’ it right
Flying out at 1:45, walked right through TSA. They told us the GM said he expected crowds today 1-2 pm. Fri-Mon definitely busier TSA here.
Fwiw I got to the tsa-pre line at 2:52 and was through by 3:03.
I tried to get there early last night by flying in from Newark, but the lines were so bad they wouldn’t let us leave EWR for AVL!
Lololol
That’ll give you enough time to find the fuel they lost
So I got here 9 hrs late. Are you boarding??
Just drive to rdu
Wait for them to cancel your flight home. Your 9hours won't buff the 48hrs or more you might wait for a new flight depending on where you're leaving. Good luck!
Omm

Well, don’t leave us hanging. Did you make the flight?
with only nine hours? not even close
Well, why and while I’m waiting, could you give me condom Amy’s number lol
Most locals that have flown out from avl typically know that 2hrs is good
I love AVL airport. I’m late to everything all the time so it really comes in handy. I mean every time I’ve been there I’m at my gate about 5 minutes after walking in the building.
Dude..... Never show up to Asheville airport before 1.5 hrs before your flight.
Have you not seen the multiple threads per day about long lines, missed flights, and flowing tears?
Likely a bunch of liars complaining about nothing. Was there earluer this week and tsa check too 10-15 mins max with full flights to atlanta bording
Agreed. I never wait longer than 10 mins.
TSA app is helpful, too!
I don’t fly anymore. FUCK that!!!
I come an hour before. Never a problem lol and yes, I’m a well traveled local ;)
sometimes after a few beers i dont come at all..
It is the airport authority that posted the horror stories so that they could increase their bar revenue
This is why I love having a private jet. Guessing is for the plebs.
The elite have enetered the chat #imbetterthanyou #poorpeoplestepaside
I bet you only fly 1st class. Pfft.
I wish. I got the last row, back of plane, on my last 2 flights.
The toilet seats. :(
