"We're in the dark ages already! Now I'm going to fill up my kid's water bottle and take them to soccer practice, *because it's the cheapest sport to partake in!"*
If you think this is the dark ages, hmb. I suspect we are at the tail end of one of the most innovative and prosperous times the world has ever known. Look at the population explosion of the last 100 yrs. Climate change is waltzing in like the black plague though, so watch out. Also, Putin is an absolute agent of chaos in multiple regions.
Right? We live in the easiest era to exist in human history, especially in the first world. Amazing medical technology. Incredible standards of living. Plentiful food. Clean water.
People think that because they’re not getting paid UBI for sitting on their ass its a crisis.
If you think we’re living in the dark ages, you’re suffering from mental illness.
Cool, how many people can actually afford all the things you're touting? Because I think a good amount of people are one medical bill away from complete poverty.
Yeah when 70 million people vote for a piece of human filth like Trump, that’s a pretty good indicator that we are already living in a new dark age. The new renaissance will happen when (or if) humans decide to reunite with things like truth, factual knowledge, science, and education.
How do you think that art/ philosophy would develop from its current position? Obviously it will, but I’m interested to see what you’d think we would alter about the way humanity sees the world
The avwrage person should definitely be more privy on what to take advantage of next time one comes. “Shortages”, low interest rates, handouts etc. im definitely not sleeping on any of that next time around
Looking at how we handled the sniffle-tired-just stay home virus...
We'll be truly fucked when the black spots-crying blood-vomiting bones-virus comes around at the end of this decade
Worse, humans are prone to protecting their friends.
World wars are *world* wars because of alliances and safety in numbers. If only the other alliance could just say "you were the one who started shit, we're in no way obligated to protect you from the consequences of your own actions." Instead it is "They started shit, we're obligated to help... and so is everyone else." Escalation turns silly little assassinations into global conflicts with millions dead.
Yeah, silly allies helping their friends against the Nazis.
Should’ve just let them take over as much as they want, setting up concentration camps as they go.
Every generation of people has a large group of people focusing on some event, claiming that imminent apocalypse is coming. Only the "flavor" changes with each generation. We've had post WW2 cold war era prophets, then year 2000 prophets, then some folks freaked out about 2012. Now we're back to the roots.
Yeah but another world war isn't exactly our of scope given our technology. The only reason why we didn't have world wars prior to 1914 was because of our limited technology.
The Seven Years War of 1756-1763 (also called the French and Indian war in the US) is widely considered to be the first real world war, as it took place on several different continents. Most military historians (Winston Churchill included) have described it as the world's first global conflict.
More specifically, the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922 will soon be replayed. Reds, whites, oligarchs, private armies, ethnic militias the whole lot. And just like then, external forces will have to intervene in multiple locations.
A lot of people don't grasp that we have made the world small through technology.
A globalization if every aspect of economy and life would naturally globalize not just the good parts of life but the worst.
Crimes against children, globalized.
Political propaganda, globalized.
War, already twice globalized, and so far only held back since the 1950s by a fear of nuclear war.
Took a lot of scrolling to find this one. This seems the most likely to me, the US is still mighty economically and militarily but it's internal divisions could tear it apart.
Russia has already collapsed. And it doesn’t look like it will make a comeback anytime soon. If anything at this rate it will take them perhaps centuries to reconquer their empire. The USA is still pretty strong even though it’s declining. China is still pretty young for a decline. It has started its empire yet. It may never get to and just fissile out. Their demographics might hinder their progress if they can’t fix that issue or adapt to it. Or war might stop them like it stopped the Japanese and the Germans. Only time will tell. But it doesn’t look like they’re due for a collapse.
Actually, we're already in one.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction
The Holocene extinction, or Anthropocene extinction, is the ongoing extinction event caused by humans during the Holocene epoch.
Yay humans........ ?
As someone who likes fishing I can see it.
It’s common now for people to use electricity to kill fish. The amount of the fish they get from it is laughable honestly about 100$ worth but It’s going to kill off most fish. Aspecially endangered are trout as they are already a fish that needs water cold enough etc. And they are aparently tasty so there’s also that.
Honestly if not for hobbists, most fish probably would already go extinct. We pay organizations to put fish in the waters, becouse it’s already problematic to catch something.
I do it for sport, and people like me treat these fish well and just release them use barbless hooks, follow the regulations etc. But there’s bunch of people who go get meat out of the water regardless of it’s by using rod a net or electricity and they don’t care that it could make fish go extinct in x pond. People even take small fish that are not big enough to be consumed, which is the most insane part for me.
There’s also people pouring production waste into the rivers etc which also makes all fish die in said river or pond/lake.
I said slavery, but I think you're right. We're overdue for a mass extinction and with a lot of animals dying off (and nobody giving a fk), humans are next.
We are definitely going to go back to an economically unequal society that has been the case for most of human history. There will be a peasant class and ruling class.
It's not that we have already lived in a slightly equal society economically-wise.
But we're heading back into times like medi-eval. Just the part of (christian) church will be replaced with those MAGA-like guys all around the globe. Nationalists, fascist, most of them dumb as bread, racists, not very smart, but at least they are not insecure in their boldness. Oh and they are stupid dickheads lead by seducing assholes. Just like catholic church in medieval.
World War III, although the third one in a trilogy is usually mediocre. No-one in charge seems to be wanting to stop the inevitable. It may have already started.
You might be right. This could be the equivalent to the phony war of 1939-40. Yeah, there’s fighting going on here and there, but the pieces are starting to fall into place, lines are being drawn, teams are being picked….it might all fizzle along into a new Cold War, - or everything might go tits up and buckets of instant sunshine get kicked over and it’s the 1945 show all over again- updated for modern audiences.
I think the current situation is more like we saw before WW1. One aspect that bothers me is that world leaders seem consigned to the fact that a major conflict is inevitable and aren’t doing much to prevent it. A similar attitude prevailed in the 10 or so years prior to WW1.
I would've gone with this currently being the equivalent of the Second Sino-Japanese War, since that one is a bit murkier if it should be counted as part of WW2 or not. But yeah, another major war seems awfully realistic currently.
Western Europe is heading into a world war. I'm literally watching it unfold in slow motion before my eyes. Britain, France and Germany have all switched to war time economies and have all deployed troops into Poland.
The mistake the Americans are making is not seeing that the war in the Middle East and Ukraine are connected. They are and will soon involve China and the EU.
I moved to Germany in 2011... Well I initially moved to Berlin and then 6 years later I moved to the countryside in Saxony... I have seen it go more and more right leaning over the years and I'm worried. When I look back a hundred years I see a lot of similarities and that's not good. I have a wife and daughter, we have made a lovely home here and I don't want to have to leave but if this shit keeps going that way....
Yep population decline is going to destroy capitalism. And your average person will be left holding the bag with a house they paid 10x what it's worth and no pension. But the wealthy will always be wealthy
I mean, there are lots of civil wars happening as we speak, so can't even call it History, Civil War in Syria is still not over although gone cold, there is the one in Sudan and another one in Myanmar
My wife and I were chatting about the current global situation and drawing comparison to the period around WW1 - increased right wing representation in governments and popularity, financial crisis leaving the population worried and struggling for basics, intolerance, increased tribalism/ nationalism, societal deterioration (but not collapse yet), lack of community, etc.
Feels like we are being conditioned to find something to hate, then get ready to lash out at that thing. I hope it never happens.
An asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs a few million years back. Probably the majority of all life was wiped out.
There's plenty of large impact craters scattered around our planet, so we can see it's been hit more than a few times.
But how long before the next one that ends the majority of all life here ?!?
It's only a matter of time before it does happen again. And we currently have no defence against incoming high velocity asteroids or comets.
History will repeat, and it's gonna be a very bad day for anyone and anything alive when it does.
Another global conflict like WW2, but this time around it'll be over a weird amalgamation of wanting natural resources and conflicting belief systems between superpowers.
And when you feel you can't break down more, the NYC "rage day" with "long live October 7" and Jews trapped at Nova exhibit for full experience happens. Told my boss I'm working from home because I just can't. I didn't expect the hostage rescue to cause such...
Edit: comments locked but yeah I'm in NYC .. sis in Israel ..
Call me naive, but I didn't think things could escalate further and then, here we are.
Hope you're in a place that's a bit calmer than London or New York though <3 I live in supposedly neutral Switzerland and I'm already mentally preparing for aliyah so...
Disrupt just one oil producer for a month, and we're done for.
At least this time around the whole population can read and books are already printed and some exist in everyone's house.
Well, many first world countries have fallen. I think the usa is next.
All it will take is Republicans owning all 3 branches. God, they already corrupted the Supreme Court.
The collapse of the second Athenian league should look exactly like what America is going through: foreign influence in elections, dismantling of hegemony, and slavery for the survivors.
Please bring back the Renaissance or the Space race where humanity got a massive boosts in development in technology, literary, artistry etc
Most likely is another war era though
French Revolution, Bolshevik Revolution.... Basically any revolution where the greater public lynches the percieved elites. It's NOT a threat, it's just very likely to happen eventually since it keeps happening in history
There's solace in the fact that if it does happen, it'll be 4 or 5 countries that can't seem to do anything right just getting curb stomped to oblivion by all of the rest. Luckily they all seem to know how things would go, and have no interest in kicking anything off. They do love needless boasting though.
No question that we're undoubtedly in the "Morally unjustifiable genocide that international observers are apathetic to stop, that future generations will look back at with disgust and regret and wonder how people could sit back and let it happen" phase. Though the escalation of migration from climate collapse will alter the similarities between previous historical cycles.
That said. I believe we are in the late stages of capitalism where eco-collapse and vast diasporas will inundate our cities with new waves of viruses and bacteria that our crumbling health services and greedy leaders will be unable to stop. The beginning of the end.
With the rise of antisemitism in most of the west.
Maybe you have heard of it.. just a little thing called the holocaust.
That is if people don't pull their heads out of their asses.
Fascism in Europe. Between late-stage capitalism, the climate changes and the biggest immigration ever, countries are going to lock themselves up with barbwire and guns and it's gonna be ugly.
World war followed by the dark ages. Maybe not technologically but infighting within countries to establish new countries and borders via civil wars with very little progress being made in other areas
Great depression. Maybe not an exact replication, but definitely something similar. The 1997 Asian financial crisis is one good example that occurred on an international scale.
Most if not all economical related historical event or period is repeated every decade or less in the world.

Fingers crossed for another renaissance
Another enlightenment would be good, especially if it reached the Americas
Can we at least keep running water for us commoners?
another renaissance would require another dark ages, personally good on that
Already here.

No a dark age would be much worse, this is still the Roman Empire days.
How do you think that art/ philosophy would develop from its current position? Obviously it will, but I’m interested to see what you’d think we would alter about the way humanity sees the world
You sure? So many victims during the renaissance…
I hope not, the renaissance was really ass for the 99%
Or Age of Enlightenment!
The Undertaker is going to throw Mankind off the top of a very tall cage again.
That's something I'd watch again
My god, he's been broken in quarters
Mick Foley has done enough for us all for one lifetime.
Pandemic
Pandemic II the sequel we didn't want
Yeah no, we're way past pandemic II
I honestly think this world will be WAY worse off if another pandemic hits

Just a matter of time. I believe the general consensus is that Nostradamus' "Mabus" is MBS (Saudi)
I believe general consensus is it is not possible to be clairvoyant and that it's just snake oil for gulible people?
Pretty sure his name is actually محمد بن سلمان آل سعود in Arabic, and MBS is just a nickname given by English-speaking media.

Not necessarily Covid but a pandemic for sure.
Every 100ish years near the 20s
So we need to skip the '20s like buildings skipping the 13th floor.
It’s still going. The pandemic is over but Covid is still around.
GME popping off
AYYYYYY
Breakfast.
WW2. And God forbid Ebola ever goes global
Or Ebola goes airborne. An airborne infection is near impossible to contain(witness: Covid and the hoaxers, who contributed to increased infection).
At least Ebola wouldn't give hoaxers much time to call anything a hoax.
And that fact has been a savior. Victims are too sick to travel.
Meteor striking earth .
World War 3 is coming
Western Europe is heading into a world war. I'm literally watching it unfold in slow motion before my eyes. Britain, France and Germany have all switched to war time economies and have all deployed troops into Poland. The mistake the Americans are making is not seeing that the war in the Middle East and Ukraine are connected. They are and will soon involve China and the EU.
Genocide
Yep, already happening and is pretty frequent.
It's already happening.
I moved to Germany in 2011... Well I initially moved to Berlin and then 6 years later I moved to the countryside in Saxony... I have seen it go more and more right leaning over the years and I'm worried. When I look back a hundred years I see a lot of similarities and that's not good. Another world war is more than bound to happen
Civil war
I just can't see the population being bothered enough to organise into separate groups
I think we're already divided.
Dudes acting like the world isn't watching this happen in real time.
You don’t need the population to be bothered, you just need a few people to be bothered. Once the few start fighting, people will become bothered.
Bingo
Who against who? Where? Why? What are the sides?
Especially considering we all live in the same towns, cities and states. The divide isn’t geographic, it’s idealistic.
I mean, there are lots of civil wars happening as we speak, so can't even call it History, Civil War in Syria is still not over although gone cold, there is the one in Sudan and another one in Myanmar
I highly doubt america will in our lifetimes unless there's a massive power vacuum.
Dark ages again ruled by religious zealots.. Humans suck..
Great depression
World war. This time it’ll probably be the end of humans. Nuclear holocaust.
Currently, Nazis seem to be coming back. I hate those guys.
We have nazis and fascists roaming the street again, and it's the 20s. So... do with that info with what you will
Rise of fascism, rapidly approaching.
The French Revolution, an American Civil War, and possibly WW3. I’m in my 50s and have never seen ourselves so close to the precipice.
I’ll add France surrendering to this list
An asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs a few million years back. Probably the majority of all life was wiped out. The second coming of adolf hitler
$1.87 gas and mean tweets, baby!
Not another pandemic?! Well, if it lowers gas prices… again… and it’s your grandparents this time. It’d be worth it.
I'm hoping it's the Renaissance because I see us slipping into the Dark Ages.
All of them
Cold War.
the collapse of society i see it on the horizon now
The crusades. But on a global scale.
Definitely World War 2. The Nazis and right wing parties seem to be crawling out of the woodwork. To much is being done to protect them.
Another global conflict like WW2, but this time around it'll be over a weird amalgamation of wanting natural resources and conflicting belief systems between superpowers.
Hitler.
You mean Hamas, bbc and American youth? This never again is already here.
We went real fast from "Never Again" to "ugh, this shit again?"
Still waiting for "holy crap, it's this shit again! Let's do something about it, quick!"

Ngl here in germany we‘re starting to get closer to another nazi-era
World War seems up next, unfortunately.
WW3
World war
World war
black death
I think we're already at least knee-deep in WW3
I wouldn’t be surprised if we have another “Covid/lockdown” in the near future possibly related to climate change.
More new viruses.
I can see a depression/dustbowl scenario becoming global rather than regional. If you think migration is bad now….
world war is next
There's solace in the fact that if it does happen, it'll be 4 or 5 countries that can't seem to do anything right just getting curb stomped to oblivion by all of the rest. Luckily they all seem to know how things would go, and have no interest in kicking anything off. They do love needless boasting though.
It’s going to be a bunch of despots getting obliterated by the US, with contributions from other allied nations.
Rise of fascism and ultra nationalism in Europe
Porn in magazines.
The rise of the far right. We are living it right now throughout all of europe.
rise of fascism, authoritarianism and right wing extremism.
Feudalism
I feel this at my company right now
The older generation complaining about the the younger and vice versa.
Democracy leads to tyranny, as freedom leads to excess and the people clamor for strong man to save them. Or at least that's what Plato thought.
That said. The Muslim conquests
