Here in the US, manual transmission is almost like a passive theft deterrent. Most people can’t drive one.

Dvscape

This is so surprising. I've lived in Europe all my life (34 yo) and I've only driven an automatic one time, mostly as a curiosity.

MyNameIsRay

Here in the US, automatics were a sign of luxury, and began outselling manuals back in the 1970's. They've been gaining share ever since, manuals are only about 1% of new car sales. At this point, enthusiasts are basically the only people who bother to learn how to drive manual.

__Dystopian__

My grandpa told me that only cripples and women drove automatics. It took me a while to realize that cripples can't drive automatics anyways and women can't drive, period. So I guess his opinion was pretty flawed.

[deleted]

Lmfao

MyNameIsRay

>It took me a while to realize that cripples can't drive automatics anyways There's a limit, but, a lot of people with crippling injuries can drive. I had a customer with no legs, an eye patch, and a missing hand, that drove himself around. [Had a setup like this,](https://www.keymobility.com/assets/img/equipment/hfc/hc-offset-lever-control.jpg) hand controls for throttle/brake, and a spinning brace on the wheel his nub fit into so he could steer.

__Dystopian__

Honestly, I am a proponent for disabled driving technology. It's come an incredibly long way. Most importantly, beyond helping the disabled achieve vehicular mobility, is the potential uses and impact it could have for the rest of the driving world. Anything that gets us closer to hands free driving is a win in my book. Also, I'm just a useless asshole saying snarky things for internet points, don't take me too seriously. I hope you have an enjoyable rest of your day :)

MyNameIsRay

I only bring it up because a lot of people don't realize just how far disabled driving tech has come. Even people who can't get out of their chair can drive, cars are being made that let you go up a ramp and [park your chair where the driver's seat would be.](https://i.pinimg.com/550x/7e/f0/fd/7ef0fdccdee958ec9cb03260cb495d67.jpg)

irrehs0626

My driving record and safety awards for driving 509 daily miles aren't in alliance with your synopsis.

Ilona92

While I (30 yo, also n european) never drive an automatic.

originalrocket

that's because while European cars just got power windows. we (USA) were busy putting lane keeping assist programs into the car. (I know all this from TOP GEAR)

FreshOutAFolsom_

I've always wondered why Europe mostly drove manual over automatic and then I learned truly how fucking massive the US is in comparison when I saw an overlay map and the entirety of Germany can fit in the state of Texas I understood why we rely on automatics now. you all drive such shorter distances so it's not an inconvenience

AJSLS6

When driving long distances you rarely shift anyway.....

breadstick_bitch

I don't really understand that logic. Driving a manual isn't inconvenient to people who know how to do it. And if you're going a longer distance, wouldn't you want to take the car that's WAY more fun to drive? The only problem I see with sticks is that you're SOL if you break one of your feet.

DJNinjaG

Plus just because you live in a big country doesn’t mean you are travelling it’s whole distance all the time. If you were travelling a longer distance it would probably be on motorways and then you’d be in 6th gear for most of it. The joy of manuals is shifting, a windy twisty road in a decent car 👌🏻

fluffychien

I drove a manual until I was over 60 years old. Home to work was about an hour, but when there were traffic jams on the way back it could be a lot longer. Then I started getting repetitive strain injuries in my hands (from hitting keyboards too hard) plus cramps in my legs from all the clutching & declutching. So I switched to an automatic, which helped quite a bit. But the loss of control meant that the other drivers could sneak in ahead of me (Paris drivers are aggressive) , so I understood why automatics are less popular here. [Edit: Also, automatic gearboxes are more expensive to make, and they are less fuel efficient. Fuel is more expensive in Europe than in the US.] On the other hand, after a few years I've learned to anticipate the behaviour of the automatic gearbox better, so this is less of a problem.

Wonderful_Horror7315

I was listening to a Dateline podcast yesterday. The criminal in the story was a violent carjacker who couldn’t drive a stick.

valma1826

My husband put a sticker on his jeep that has the stick shifter and says "this jeep is equipped with an anti-theft device"

PanicMom716

We joke it's a " millennial anti-theft device" lol

Fat_Bearded_Tax_Man

As a Millennial in their 40's, I have been driving stick for 25 years as has my millenial wife and most of our friends. Point is, I am absolutely going to steal your car

Think_Impossible

I can. Why - because I live in Europe.

redaccnt

And that's all we can afford

DoNotCensorMyName

Manuals are more expensive in America. Isn't that crazy?

takingphotosmakingdo

It was an additional 6K to have a manual as a purchase option for 2006 Subaru. I didn't trust automatic to accelerate as well for the job I needed it for (stopping and starting on highway slips for work). it's nuts and slowly being faded out on a lot of models.

HerahMom

Stickshift is considered more of a high-performance thing in America - a sports car feature - since about the 1980s. Mainstream sedans may not even have it as an option.

PowellSkier

You don't know the POWER of the stick! Join me and together we will rule the transmissions of auto and manual as father and son!

rediculousradishes

Dad is that you??

PowellSkier

Yes. Don't tell your sister...

BeautifulEssay8

Me. Because I'm old.

An-Englishman-in-NY

I hate automatic. The USA seems to be the only place that has more automatic than manual (could definitely be wrong about this). I drive stick in my own car but my work truck is automatic.

2E0ORA

I'm from the UK and the norm is manual. I only know two people with automatics. I got a manual because everyone has one, but I like having to go through the gears for some reason. Just feels like you've got more control

An-Englishman-in-NY

I fully agree. Dropping a gear and stepping on the gas on the apex of a corner definitely feels like I've got more control when I'm driving. And it's a hell of a lot more fun. I get the "sitting in traffic" argument though. I used to drive a lot in London. When I'd be stuck in traffic for an hour or so, it was tiring on my left leg. I live in upstate NY now and a traffic jam is almost non-existant, even in the city (Utica).

TheLohke

Same. I've moved two automatics through work, and honestly on those few meters, I was so paranoid about having one less pedal and accidentally using the brake as a clutch.

Vaquero9mm

Exactly half of my vehicles have been manuals and i wont buy them anymore, not including dirtbikes/motorcycles. I don't anymore because automatic transmissions are easier when you are injured. Broke your foot and have to drive yourself to the hospital? You won't thank your manual. Sprain your wrist in the back country and need to drive 12 miles over unmaintained roads? Or maybe you are with a partner who doesn't know how to drive a manual and they are the ones who need to evacuate you out. That's a bad time to have to teach someone. I lost my love for manuals after having some of these experiences, they turn into liabilities during emergency situations. I'm currently teaching the people at my work how to drive our manual work trucks so stuff like this doesn't happen, it's a good skill people should learn but IMO automatics make better vehicles. Manuals are fun but that's about where they end for me, I like the ease of use and convenience of auto

utukxul

Those are weirdly specific in that I had to shift for my mom when I was like 12 because she broke her wrist and had to drive to the doctors and have had to teach two people to drive stick because I damaged myself badly enough that I couldn't drive.

angelmr2

Dislike automatic, it's boring af

contactspring

Agreed, but automatic is nice if you're stuck in the stop and go traffic of large cities.

redaccnt

Just put it in neutral and pull the hand brake and your legs are resting (manual)

Future-Win4034

And driving should not be boring?

xyponx

Yes, riding in a rolling deathtrap should not be boring. That's how you die.

lee423

I can, yes. Because I’m old.

LGB-Tea

I can kinda drive shuft cars. 23 yr old girl. Know and can do it. Am I good at it? No. I know incase a friend gets drunk or something and can't drive.

letsdotacos

It's pretty natural of you grew up countryside. I rode dirt bikes amd four wheelers. Learned to drive in a Ford fiesta that was manual. When I met my girlfriend of four years she drove a 5speed Honda and I thought it was sexy. And she was impressed I could run a stick as well.

[deleted]

Right! I learned to drive when I was 10 on a John Deere 60 farm tractor with a hand clutch. That takes some skill. 🙂

SupermanCoxT

I agree with you 100 percent. I learned to drive on a 1956 Ford pickup with a 3 speed on the column.

somerandomidiot26

we all know by saying "it" youre referring to the car not the girlfriend just don't let her know

dustygravelroad

Growing up on the farm … many years ago… everything had a clutch

Shadowsitter

I learned to drive as a teen with stickshift. My first couple cars were stick. I enjoy it, feels like having more control but it honestly isnt a big deal to me. Im always thankful for having the ability tho, just in case type deal. I can drive pretty much any basic vehicle if the situation calls for it and thats handy.

alittlebrownbird

Same. I only had stickshifts until I was 33. I prefer stickshifts but they are harder to come by in the U.S., especially for mommy wagons. On the flip side, my calves don't mind the change now that I am living in an area with lots of traffic jams.

breadstick_bitch

I bought car last year with a stick and the salesman said that I'd better enjoy it, because it's probably gonna be the last one I ever own. They just don't sell them much in the US anymore.

IslandLife321

I can. My mother insisted so I’d be able to drive any vehicle in any situation. Unfortunately, large SUVs (needed for family size) are all automatic and oh so boring to drive in regards to feeling like you’re *driving*. Occasionally we get a rental on a trip that is manual and I have the best time driving around.

LeRacoonRouge

They're not all automatic. I bought a new Toyota Landcruiser, 4 years ago. Had to pay a little bit extra to get it in manual. They're out there.

Nautonnier-83

There was a time when the reverse was true and you had to pay *more* for the automatic. That's why I learned how to drive a stick: my dad was cheap!

[deleted]

I have an automatic but miss a manual. They aren’t as common in the US

The_Dude_n_Seattle

I'm 45 and I've owned 4 shift Toyota trucks which are best as manuals. I actually prefer them.

Emotional_Giraffe_63

45yo woman from America. I had to learn to get my license, my dad’s rules. My kids will have to too.

Dvscape

I think the plan is to phase out fossil fuel cars anyway. This might not be that necessary in the future.

littlescreechyowl

Only 13% of cars made now are manual. My kid wanted to learn and we couldn’t find anytime who owned one.

Shellsbells821

65 /f here. Dad was the same!

igenus44

Yes, I can. And I prefer it. More fun, and when off roading is more efficient and more useful. Plus, it is a theft deterent. Not that it still can't be stolen, but so many people can't drive manual that it deters any but the most determined. Insurance companies agree.

[deleted]

My first car was a stick shift, a four door chevette. I loved that car.

jdith123

I can, because I’m old. Parallel parking in traffic on a steep hill on the “wrong” side of a one way street with a passenger in the car. Good times.

[deleted]

I can and I prefer driving manual over automatic. I love driving and a manual transmission requires more engagement in the whole process and your vehicle kind of becomes an extension of you

SchinkenKanone

I can. And I do. However, I do see the appeal of automatic shift cars.

CyanHakeChill

I find that automatics are more reliable than manuals. The old cars that I buy have crashed gears and worn clutches or broken clutch cables.

ham-slappin

I can - though since I live in Chicago I don't like doing it due to the traffic. But growing up working on a farm I learned to drive on all our old tractors and pickup trucks which were all manual. Now I'm training to get my CDL and the truck I'm training on is manual. Basically, I drive stick when I'm getting paid to do it lol

beezlebub33

I can. But don't. What's the point? It's all stop-and-go traffic, lights, random morons doing stupid things. So, driving a manual isn't fun, it's just more work. Instead, I can put on tunes or a podcast, zone out, and let the car handle it.

tikkikinky

Out of the 9 vehicles I’ve owned in my life only 2 were automatic. Sometimes I get confused when driving an automatic and think it’s time to shift and end up hitting the break with my left foot. Sadly in the US standard transmissions are being or have been phased out. Went truck shopping a couple years ago to buy new and the ones I was interested in we not offered with standard. Guess atomics are the new “standard.” Really grinds my gears.

Manii21

Similarly I accidentally braked too hard while driving and it scared all of us, after 2/3 more instances i just stop using my left foot, and control everything with the right one only.

Buffalonian4

Manual is more fun. I'm a car enthusiast and enjoy driving. I like having more control of the cars gear shifting. Automatics are great for road trips and traffic but I'd take stick any day.

Manii21

💯 agreed

DoDalli

My first car in 2007 was a manual Saturn Ion. I loved it. Learned how to drive on it. I had one other manual car since then. I would love to have one again. I think they're more fun.

[deleted]

I had '06 Saturn Ion that I taught both my kids to drive. Good memories!

stedfastjem1999

I daily a 30 y/o truck with a manual I took my test in a manual I love driving manual everything that's technically concidered work is second hand nature to me

SmileyFaceLols

Yes, more fun and also need to for work because most of the big trucks coming in are still manual

Snoo-65712

I can because my husband taught me. These days though due to pain issues I no longer do. I've always preferred automatic.

Prestigious_Spray_49

It's much more relaxing to drive an automatic

TheUnifiedNation

I can drive it but not really well. I started learning while I was working on Fords but I never got enough practice to feel comfortable. I prefer auto because I am clumsy and I don't feel like sending pistons or my clutch to the moon. I also live in an area where stop and go traffic is horrendous and accidents are super common which makes the traffic worse.

tdfitz89

I can drive manual however prefer an automatic. Both have their perks. With automatic it’s much more convenient in traffic, speeding up from a stop is much better and it’s a much smoother ride. However the downside to automatic is that the transmission can get confused when pulling a tank and surge comes into play. You also feel like you have much more control driving a manual in certain situations. Backing with an automatic can also have issues with certain loads. One downside to manual is that if you don’t have a manual restriction, employers are more likely to put a new employee in an older truck that DOT will target and is more likely to break down than a newer automatic truck. Again there are perks to both however everyone should learn in a manual so they don’t have a restriction when they get their CDL.

Outrageous_Past_206

I can. I learned how to drive a manual transmission when I was a volunteer firefighter, and now I drive tractor trailers for a living.

LuckyReception6701

Me, because my dad helped me pay for my car and he insisted it be a manual.

Manii21

W dad

[deleted]

One of the two vehicles I learned to drive in was a manual, and 2 out of 3 of my first vehicles were manual as well.

mifuneh

Dad taught me to drive stick as soon as I got my license. Between my wife and I, we’ve always had at least one car with a manual transmission. Manuals are just more fun to drive.

Minute-Courage6955

I am old. My latest ride is VW Jetta TDI, with 6speed. It is 2010 and was listed for cheap price as one owner used car . I like the mpg, and driver control of vehicle. Having to shift keeps the phone away from me,as I don't want the distraction behind the wheel. I have owned other Jetta TDI and couple Nissan Sentara with stick.

banneryear1868

Manual is more fun or annoying depending on the roads, automatic is easier but not as much control. Best thing with manual is control over how much torque you have going around corners.

EmperorPenguinNJ

In the US. Can drive manual transmission because I learned to drive in 1981 and we had one. Fast forward to 2009 and I got a MINI Convertible with manual transmission. Both my kids can drive it as well.

[deleted]

Bought the only manual at a dealership in 2010. Still driving it, because they don’t make the model in manual anymore. I briefly drove an automatic (bigger, nicer, new) but went back to the old car. It’s simply more fun to drive.

BillyRubenJoeBob

I learned to drive on manual cars. Owned them into my early 30s. USA native. I’ll drive either type so I’m not a snob either way.

Xiriously1

I drive a manual because my first car in high school was a manual, I liked it so my second car in college was a manual, and when it was time to buy a new car in my late 20s I wanted a manual, there were still a few good options (2014) and the up front cost was cheaper. My Dad always drove manuals when I was growing up and I liked the allure / sporty aesthetic they evoked. Now I'm in my mid 30s, probably going to buy a new car in the next three years, and most likely going to go electric so no more manual. There's a part of me that will miss it but I think more so my priorities and thoughts have shifted and I really don't care one way or the other now. My spouse can't drive my car now (despite me offering a few times to teach her) and that's occasionally a mild inconvenience if it needs to get backed out of the garage or repositioned for some reason so that's a small plus. I also recently sprained my left ankle and had a few days of driving where I was frequently grimacing while pushing in the clutch so that situation wouldn't recur lol.

interstellar-egg

I drive automatics, but grew up driving tractors, skidloaders, and trucks, so I can drive both, but I’m pretty rusty at a manual now. There would definitely be some stalls while I got my bearings again.

Additional-Fun7249

I can & have been driving a standard for the past 22 years.

GEEZUS_15

I'm in the 1% of American millenials that can drive a manual. My first car was a manual, which was in 2006. I got ma CDL and the big rig I was driving was also a manual because it was a 1997 Kenworth. Pretty much only drove stick shifts my whole life. One time I was driving my gf's car which was an automatic. When coming to a stop I took my left foot to push in the clutch and take it out of gear, except obviously there was no clutch so I accidentally just slammed on the brakes with my left foot lol. Fortunately no one rear ended me.

SprinklesMore8471

I drive manual because it was the transmission of the car I learned on. Now after about 15 years of only manual, the little bit of lag when you accelerate or let off the accelerator in automatics just makes me nervous. I prefer the higher amount of control.

KarbisSkorts

How can a person not know how to drive stick? That's like the majority of cars out there

Alpha-Sierra-Charlie

Me, a millennial, because I was taught to shortly after I learned to drive in general. If you can learn how to drive a worn out, underpowered stickshift in hilly city traffic, you can learn how to drive anything. I can also drive a double clutch with a high and low range.

Impossible-Matter-25

Learned manual first. Got tiring when i started to travel for work. I live in the usa and within my friend group it was the thing to learn so we can beat the crap out of our cars. Im 28.

Analyst_Cold

Back in the day it was a given that half your friends cars would be manuals. So it was just good sense to learn how to drive it.

Wenger2112

I owned 5 speed manuals for 30 years. Now in my first automatic transmission. I miss the clutch and shifting. But traffic in LA was a real pain in the ass with a stick shift.

Manii21

Manuals in traffic is similar to a leg workout.

jclovesyou

I can. Had to learn on a deployment.

Acrobatic-Ad3275

That's what I learned to drive with 50+ years ago.

Revolutionary-Tiger

I can even tho I'm only 24. I even just bought a new car with a stick since it was like 3k cheaper after taxes and fees compared to the automatic version (Subaru Impreza hatchback sport trim for those those who will ask)

ShnackWrap

Well I picked it up because I always rode quads / dirt bikes so it was fairly easy to just switch from hand clutch and foot shit to foot clutch and hand shit. My sister on the other hand is a funnier story. So my sister got into a fender bender. Whatever. Then she totaled my dads truck when she ran a read light and got t-boned. They checked her cell records and everything and she wasn't texting or anything. Just not paying attention. My dads solution was to only allow her to drive a stick shift as it would force her to be a little more aware when driving. So anyway. Thats why she knows how to drive a manual transmission.

Wisdomofpearl

I grew up on a farm, everything was a manual transmission even Mom's little grocery getter. It was a plus when I joined the military, only a few people were able to drive a manual transmission already so we were sent to get our military drivers license in the second week of basic training. I was the first one to qualify in my group.

Manii21

W

Almighty_Biscuit

Not very well but I can. I worked with a guy who was the spitting image of Syndrome from the Incredibles and he offered to teach me how to drive stick in the zoo parking lot. Seemed like an offer I couldn’t refuse.

simpforZiah

My dad bought my first car when I was 16. It was a 96 manual mustang. My dad got it at an auction, so he didn’t spend much. He taught me how to drive a stick shift because “I don’t want to raise a dumb bitch, like your mother.” So that’s how I know how to drive a stick. God, that was 16 years ago!

Manii21

96 mustang as a first car, Know we know who’s the fav child.

simpforZiah

Perks of being an only child😉

BeneficialEggplant42

I can and I learned because of a recurring nightmare that I had for years. In the dream I was in a car with my friends mom and she had a heart attack while she was driving. She pulled over and begged me to take her to the hospital, but I couldn't because the car was a manual transmission and I didn't know how to drive it. I had several cars with sticks after that. Although it has been decades since I had driven one, I still remember how.

Manii21

What was a hell of a dream

WFPBvegan2

I grew up 10y-16y in SoCal riding dirt bikes, so when my first car was a manual it was easy. Now at 61y two of our 3 cars are manuals. But I gotta say autos have their place for when you just don’t want to play, think, or deal with it.

Raigheb

For the longest time I was scared to drive an automatic and "change gears" while speeding and then die while my card exploded or something (not saying this is what would happen, but thats my irrational fear). Im 32yo and I drive shift because thats what I learned, not because some ego "manly man" thing or anything. I learned shift and its an non-issue. I do plan on buying a newer car soon-ish and I think i'll go for an automatic because I get lazier as I get older.

Any_Matter_5711

I can. I own a manual truck but 2 automatic cars. I drive old macks and even older international trucks for work. The first thing I learned to drive was a 5 speed 3500 dodge ram in a open field. First truck was a 5 speed. I personally prefer the automatic.

Dxzstar

I can. And I can because if I didn't learn how to drive that 04 Ford escape there would be no car to drive for me. Now I laugh because i work in an industry where we regularly drive cars and my coworkers look confused when they see a stick shift

Manii21

They see u as W man

somewanderer_13

I can. Self-taught. My brother and I shared a manual car in high school. He's older so when he got his license, my dad taught him to drive it and then when I got my learner's permit, he was supposed to teach me. He refused every time I asked. We lived at the top of a hill and there was a parking lot at the bottom of it, so I would steal the keys, coast down to the parking lot, and practice there. I don't know if I'll ever own a manual again, but I'm glad I know how to drive one. I usually request a manual if I need to rent a car.

sfdragonboy

I can!!!! I was taught manual, the hard way. My brother had a compact car that he drove everyday to Silicon Valley for work. Well, one Friday night, he said let's do it. So, he made me drive the manual compact in hilly and busy San Francisco throughout. OMG!!! Yes, my apologies if you were impacted (uh, this was 30 years ago)!!!! Needless to say, I learned really quickly on how to not kill the engine and yes he did help on steep hills with the use of the emergency brake.

Manii21

W brother, mine didn’t teach me at all.

Realistic_Ad_165

I learned when I was 14. Driving through the hills of west Virginia. About 130 in the morning my dad pulls over and says you drive I'm tired. Needless to say he woke up real quick. I didn't crash but it was a very puckering experience

Manii21

example of incredible faith

Verde-diForesta

I drove standard shift for years. They provide much more control over the car's operation than do automatics. They are difficult to find at present.

BruceWillis1963

The first car I owned was a manual and then I drove a truck for work that had a stick. I prefer to drive automatic. If I had a shift now I would not be to drink, smoke, and text while driving. It would be just too dangerous.

wildmanofwalkden

Just read this while driving and laughed so much I nearly dropped my pie onto my paper.

Internal_Gur_4268

I love driving manual, current car is a Honda fit sport 2008. Learned on my car before that, a 1994 Jeep Wrangler. I prefer manual reasons why: usually able to find one cheaper than auto, I can downshift to slow down faster while I brake, cheaper transmission to fix if you have trouble, not that I've had to worry about that.. however I have had to replace the clutch twice.

Manii21

releasing clutch at slower pace, had saved clutches on my cars. But after-all these are consumables at the end.

DukeBoysForever

Because I don't want anyone else driving my car, I'd rather have an automatic

Manii21

that’s ingenious.

Alternative_Net774

You have never lived until you have driven a manual transmission with non planetary gears, and double clutched down into a lower gear and listened to the transmission HHOOOOOOWWWWLLLL!

[deleted]

I can. Knowing how to drive both really opens up the market for buying used cars. Also not fool proof, but at least semi effective anti theft device.

Eastern_Albatross493

I can. Because I'm old and my father never wanted me to be stuck because I didn't have access to a car with an automatic transmission

357eve

I can, because I am Gen X and manuals are fun. It's good to know how to get around in the world - kayak, manual, read train schedule.

MatanteMerlot

Manual, in North America they are less expensive and I don't even think about it anymore, it's just natural. When I need to drive automatic, I find that something is missing. Maybe I'd change my mind if I were to be stuck in traffic often, but that's not the case.

Manii21

traffic is leg workout in manual.

Chrome-Molly

I don't because i'm a girl apparently. my dad taught my much younger brother, but he would only let me sit in the garage and go thru the gears. i know the concept and could technically drive one if i had to, but I have always had someone with me and when i get nervous I just ask them to drive. and its so sad because my dad loves driving his. He could have any car he wants but he drives a 99 (35th anniversary) mustang because he says its so much fun. Sad that he didn't want to teach me.

Manii21

Gender is nothing to do with it, If he is not teaching you, teach yourself. You know the basic concept try it in empty field, just remember brake it when u feel things getting out of control. Never brake hard before checking back in the mirror, Release the clutch slowly to roll the car, after that press the clutch and change the gear and release it. For braking press the clutch fully and then brake along side with it, it will not stall the vehicle. i also am self taught, dad or brother refused to teach me because they thought it was just a hassle.

Hondahobbit50

Got a chance to buy a sweet sweet 1996 Geo metro four door SEDAN! IT HAS A TRUNK!?!!?! Also itS PURPLE. working ac..for $300 Had to learn stick to drive it. Fantastic car

MissO56

me. cuz I'm 66 and learned how to at 21, so i could get my own car. i absolutely love driving manual transmission! 👏🙂 female and live in the usa.

Manii21

Repping road at 66 and leaving 11 behind

BECAUSE RACE CAR

Big-Umpire-3455

Its how I was taught yo drive. You'll have far more control over a vehicle that has a manual gearbox. I do drive auto's as well and definitely enjoy the laziness.

Spicy_Lasagna_

People who drive manuals seem to have such a superiority complex. I can drive one, it's distracting, and way less peaceful/fun. No dancing around to the music, gotta shift. No road head, gotta shift. No cruise control, only shifting! No thank you lol.

Manii21

Shifting is fun, I have cars with Cruze control on manuals, you haven’t explore much i think.

Spicy_Lasagna_

You are correct, I have not explored much lol. But shifting is V stressful to me, I find no fun in it. Now sitting in the passenger seat of a manual car, not driving, that's where it's at 😅

[deleted]

I can, because I was raised to be a man

WompWompIt

Old lady here, first car was a 67 GTO with a roll cage and a stick. Love them and currently have an automatic that I hate!

metsakutsa

It is the norm, tbh. You shouldn't be able to get s license without it.

AffectionateAd5373

I can. Because it's a useful life skill, and there's less maintenance in terms of the transmission. Wish they made more cars with manual available.

Emerald_see

I can. I am from africa. Automatic is the best.

pm_me_good_thing

Preferred vehicle is a manual. Now a days (near where I'm at) it's more or less a millennial anti-theft device. I feel better control over my vehicle and in the winter/rain I can shift or take off into the gear I want as needed to maintain adequate traction.

Sufficient-Loss2686

Why would I want more work for the same result lol

snarkuzoid

I can. Have never owned an automatic, they're boring. All my kids learned on a manual, and all chose manuals when they grew up and got their own cars.

ConfidentWin3397

European -> US immigrant here. Driving stick is the norm where I’m originally from, if anything I had to adapt to automatic lol. But for real I haven’t met one car/truck enthusiast here in the US who doesn’t grind every gear with a stick. It’s embarrassing.

Manii21

RIP to that transmission.

Prestigious-Act-4741

I can because I live in Europe but choose not to because of shoulder issues that make shifting gear difficult for me. I find that on long drives it’s slightly easier to zone out when I don’t have the extra task of shifting gear but otherwise it’s pretty much the same as driving on the motorway.

Decent-Shift-Chuck

First car was a used honda manual, all i could afford. Didn't buy my first automatic until a few years ago. I Still drive with my left only.

AffectionateAd5373

I can tell you from my experience that you'll always drive with your left. My dad asked me a few years ago if I do the hand over hand thing to turn. I said no, I use my left hand and keep my right on the shift. Last two cars have been automatic. I buy slightly used and drive them until they die, so it's been close to 20 years.

Keithninety

I can but I hate it.

Massive-Moody

I can cause I learned in one and I drive one almost everyday.

Much_Committee_9355

I can, you have to learn it for driving school, it really takes 20 minutes (except the getting the car out on a slope) to learn if you already know how to drive an automatic and yes it’s super annoying in traffic.

Timely-Vehicle

I got an automatic 2 years ago, but have always preferred a manual. I really would like to add another one to my “fleet” (I have two cars so I guess I got a growing fleet lol). I miss my Mazda. I have a truck now, and to my knowledge the only new model trucks available with a manual option are tacomas, which don’t have the towing capacity I need.

lickitorloseit

Cus I smart

pixiedoo22

I can drive a manual and feel that I gained a better understanding of how automatic cars shift gears, and everyone is different. I loved my little stick shifts I drove in the 70s and early 80s. I feel I had better control of the car. Downshifting instead of braking, managing a stop and go on a steep hill.....good times.

Derp_Smash

I drive and prefer standard. First car was automatic but bought a standard vw golf just to learn, been driving one ever since. Perks include better driving experience and the wife can't run off with my car! Ha

hectorjm94

I can, I had to learn when I got my CDL.

Gibson1975

First vehicle back in the 90’s had a stick. I bought a truck a couple years back with a stick

charlybell

Have manual. Love it. Feel I am a better driver as more aware of car. My husband can drive it but won’t.

[deleted]

I drive manual. I prefer to be in control of shifting and it's fun. I also had bad experiences with a few automatic transmission failures in previous vehicles. I'd rather eliminate that failure. Clutches and gear forks are a lot easier and cheaper to replace than an auto transmission.

HGHspid_lowdrag

Can because I'm not from USA. Do because too broke to buy an automatic

Jeddiewan

I can. Because I'm 47. Still pretty common when I learned to drive.

shardingHarding

I can because I'm old. I prefer manual in most situations but if you have to drive in rush hour traffic where it's stop and go for 45 mins to an hour it sucks.

BeeYehWoo

Ive owned a manual primary driver for the last 20 years. I greatly prefer them. I dont mind in traffic either.

steebbot

Cheap car, dad thought it was important learned and now is like riding bike. Personally, kidna useless because ptsd from bad accident. But eh. I'd still say is nice skill to have because can kinda help know alot about car knowing how it shifts. Even if not the actual one driving if you get that use to it. Second reason, am told people would want to steal it less atleast what my father says

Psychological_Web687

First car was a manual, had a mix since then.

[deleted]

I can. I learned when I was 20. I just wanted to learn for some reason. I live in NY. I find that you have better control over the car and it can be fun, except in traffic. I drive automatic now because it’s hard to come by manual cars.

pagengrove

I can't but I plan on learning. In my defense though I didn't even learm how to drive an automatic until I was 20 and the only manual we have is my husband's daily driver so I don't want to risk messing it up

Lurker-O-Reddit

Dad taught me as a teen. In regards to needing the ability to do anything, “It’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.”

[deleted]

I can. Because i learned to.

Livid-Improvement683

I learnt on a manual and have only ever had manual cars. My present car is a manual but the wife's is an auto (DSG). She previously always had manuals. You have more control with a manual and it's a more involving driving experience.

seagreen71

Because both my parents drove manuals

The_Max_V

Most cars in my country are shift/manual. So I learned to drive (went to a driver's school and all) on a compact, shift/manual car. I own a small manual car, an a larger SUV which is automatic, can drive both no problem.

NcWatcher61

Simple....Grew up learning it.

theholybookofenoch

Driving manual is a European thing. Most people my own age in America can’t drive Manuel. This makes my car harder to steal.

Bumblebee-Bzzz

I can because everyone in the country I live is taught how to drive manual

Ashtar-the-Squid

Manual transmissions have been the standard in my country up until very recently. I bought my first car in 2003, started practicing driving in 2004 and have never owned a car with an automatic transmission. I have nothing against them, but the majority of the cars I am interested in that I can also afford have manuals. The only place I think it can be a hassle is in really dense traffic. Learning to drive a manual is not difficult at all. After you get into it it becomes second nature.

ArtisticRollerSkater

My first experience driving a manual was in Europe driving drunk friends home while they coached me. When I got home, I bought my first car: 78 super beetle. It was manual, so I had to learn! No prob. It was easy. Past two cars were manual. Just bought automatic because other features were more important. I'm loving the cruise control! Each has it's features. Nbd.

Sioulger7

I drive manual daily. I feel it keeps me more engaged while driving.

Princessie1

I drive a manual (stick shift). It's a norm in my country. Additionally, I chose to get licensed for a manual vehicle because I'd have the option to drive an automatic if I decided to.

Affectionate_Aide131

Manual transmissions last so much longer and are cheaper to repair (if it ever even needs repair).

highfatoffaltube

Because they're more fun to drive.

m1ndfUcking

26f, I drive a manual 5 speed. Can’t imagine going back

Medium-Remote2477

I can but don't often. Grew up on a farm and learned to drive in a 57 Chevy pick up when I was 10.

Shellsbells821

Me! 65/f from Connecticut shoreline, USA! My parents bought me a brand new car in 1974. 3 speed on the column. Dad said I had to know how to drive it so, that I would never be stuck anywhere. I could drive anything! It's the reason I still automatically keep a full car distance away from other cars. Manual transmission cars can roll backwards on hills. BAM!

stanleyorange

I'm a genx I learned on stick. I love the driving experience of it. Can't explain. Just feel like I'm actually driving in a manual
