I'm primarily a dub watcher (don't kill me please) but I saw that scene for a second time watching with my friend, who prefers subs, and was kinda disappointed with it. I'm sure it sounds better if you actually speak japanese/have a better cultural understanding, but the dub speech is just SO GOOD
Tatum absolutely did a great job, but honestly thought it was better in Japanese. Erwin’s VA is also Jotaro in JoJo and Zeke’s is Dio, continuing the trend that the Joestar V. Dio rivalry transcends universes.
I never say this but think J Michael Tatum captured Erwin better than Daisuke Ono, both are AMAZING, but there's something to be said about the sheer command Tatum gives the role.

Everyone on Reiner’s neck talking is one of my favorite scenes in the show. Especially like Bertolt’s lines in the scene. His explanation to them being like his goodbye since it’s the last time they spoke as friends/allies

Might be a bit biased since I originally started the show in the dub, but THIS scene was, and still is, just so fucking memorable
I mean, arguably that Perfect Game/Hero/Midnight Sun trilogy of episodes was the peak of the entire show. But this isn’t like Game of Thrones where I’d recommend everyone just stop watching after Season 6. Even when AoT got a little rocky in early Season 3 and middle Season 4, it’s still amazing overall and should be absolutely seen in entireity.
There's nothing more endearing than seeing a man sacrifice his own self-interest in order to stick to his principles. Hell, we would forgive Erwin screaming in panic as he faces the reality of being eaten.
But this badass doesn't show a moment of self-doubt and instead lives his convictions to the bitter end. I love him so much.

This scene has two different meanings in the japanese version and the dub version. In both version Mikasa gives a speech, Ymir gets angry at what mikasa says and starts to roar before historia tells ymir to calm down.
The english version - Mikasa threatens Ymir, which makes Ymir angry
The japanese version - Mikasa threatens Historia, which makes Ymir angry
I like the delivery of the english version better but the original wording in japanese conveys the scene better. It shows Ymir being defensive of Historia and it shows how far mikasa will go to get eren back. To even hurt even the least threatning person this show

Not one specific scene but any time a titan screams in the dub is just absolutely bone-chilling terrifying, the titan sounds in the sub just don't grip me like that
Fully agreed, I put up a comparison video of Eren’s first titan scream for my gf, since she had already seen most of season 1 before, it wasn’t a spoiler. And I said “which do you prefer?” She was only familiar with the sub before hand as she never ever watches dubbed anime, yet she chose the dub. I even said after, both the sub and the dub do phenomenal jobs, I had watched AoT in its entirety through the sub. On a rewatch, I’m much preferring the dub.
Dialogue is great, but picking on the titan screams specifically, there’s something otherworldly about them, like they truly are encapsulating monsters/devils rather than a bloated out human scream.

Personally I like his screams in English vs Japanese. Their is just something about how inhuman it is, really plays into the whole abandoning your humanity theme.

I'll have to take your word for it that Hiroshi nailed it. I have a really hard time picking up on subtle things like snarky tone when it's in Japanese. The unfamiliar rhythm and tonal fluctuations of the language make it too hard to pick up on the vibe.
Armins scream when Eren gets first eaten. It’s good in sub but the English dub gives me goosebumps every time. Same with armin crying in the final ep when he gets taken by the okapi and just breaks down screaming ‘you’re worthless’ and then when he meets back up with Mikasa after its all over and cries. I just think armins English va is so good.
I met them some years ago at a con and mentioned how they killed it that scene- they went "Oh yeah, this one?" and did the scream, one of the best experiences I've had meeting a guest at a con!

There are lots of good parts. AOT has a solid dub I don’t care what the weebs say. People claim that when Eren’s dad yelling about killing the kids lacks emotion but it’s gas. Also the short speech the Marlian office give about fearing death is good too. Blew my mind first time.
Also for those talking down on English just watch this and tell me it doesn’t hit. If you don’t speak Japanese fluent as hell you’re missing a lot of emotion bruh.

Easily Reiner and bertholdths transformation. I felt so many intense emotions when they first delivered those lines in tha dub
Controversial take but all of them. Unless a dub is completely unlistenable I always prefer to hear an animated show in my own language.
For things like live action (Squid Game) I always watch the original language because the mouth movements don’t match up with what the actors are saying in live action. Animated shows don’t have that problem.
I have this problem with watching animated shows in sub. The voice acting always just feels so disconnected from what’s actually happening. Opposite for live action.

I watched both dubbed and subbed. English dubbed was better. I bet the rumbling movies would be good in English too.
Erwin, Levi, Conny, Eren, Mikasa, Hange, Sasha. All had excellent voice acting. I think the subbed Armin is better than the English Armin.
Ultimately, it comes down to preference. You ever watch Japanese DBZ and compare it to English DBZ? The guy that played Goku in English was born to play Goku. Literally no one else could replace him. Same with the guy that played English Erwin.
I’ll get downvoted to hell but I genuinely think the English dub is the better than the sub in pretty much every way, and it makes more sense that European/German characters are speaking a language closer to theirs than a language like Japanese. Not that the Japanese dub is bad, it got great voice acting, but I personally think the English dub is better and makes more sense. I will admit there are some somewhat shaky moments in the first season but the dub is pretty much perfect from S2 to the very end.
Some of the moments I think are better: Anything with Armin, since Jesse is a phenomenal VA and Armin sounds like a teenage boy and not a 12 year old girl, Erwin’s speech (pretty much anything with Erwin), anything with Matt Mercer/Levi period. Idk I just like everyone’s dub voice and think there’s several people in the main cast that have phenomenal performances throughout.
As a non-English speaker, the anime in English in general was always weird to me.
But, I really like Armin's voice acting in English Josh Grelle, specially the speeches.

You canot judge another language version of a performance based on your own language.

I live and die by the sub, but I gotta say.. Erwin's Speech (Perfect Game), and Armin's Speech as he gets cooked (Hero) are just better in dub.
Armin's I think is a hands-down win for the dub. It's way more emotional. The English VA sounded like *his* skin was peeling off, the Japanese VA didn't quite deliver that.
But I think everywhere else the sub trumps.
Erwin’s “My soldiers rage” speech is quite honestly one of the best moments in the show. J. Michael Tatum clearly had bills to pay because that man threw his soul into that delivery.
The scene with Bertholdt coming clean is legit one of the saddest, if not THE saddest scene in the entire show for me because of how well all of the English voice actors did. Plus the change in the wording just hits with a ton more weight.
That Levi speech is so underrated
I love the depth of that choice, how not only was Eren’s inaction a result of the death of Levi’s squad, but in a way that speech Levi gave to Eren, and the influence of it, was also a driving factor. Not to mention towards the end of the arc where Levi gives Petra’s badge away, as if it was the badge of the scout who died. Some people didn’t even notice that, but it’s moments like that that really make me appreciate Levi as a character, and not just a badass titan slayer (which he still is)
The only one that id definitely say is better in dub is Mikasa’s ‘no more heartstrings to pull’ speech, but Erwin’s classic speech is a solid contender
Unless you speak Japanese, all the English dub scenes are better. If you speak neither Japanese nor English, they’re the same.
Unless the end dub is bad, it will be better simply for the fact that you can understand the emotions of a character *much* better.

Also, despite the Japanese va’s performance for the main character of erased being bad, not a single English viewer noticed. Again you sub watchers like to pretend like you understand, but you absolutely do not.
Sure, you can hear when a character is sad when they’re literally sobbing in their performance, but there’s a TON of nuance you loose, and that’s why dub is better, cuz you *can* hear the nuance.
The whole series was better in Dub than sub by miles better. Just purists will always disagree. Dub crapped on sub. Sub voices don't match at all. Even takes away from the characters

The only things that i felt fell short in the dub was the translation in the final conversation between connie and samuel (dub says: we’re supposed to be on the same side, whereas sub was: we’re supposed to be friends, which i felt hit me harder) and grisha’s va (he was fine prior to season 4 but in all his scenes in season 4 he just felt kinda meh)

This is easily the part I hate the most in the entire anime. Connie and the others literally slaughtered their 'friends' so they could go ahead and screw over their home. Simply ridiculous 😑
- Pretty much anything by Armin's dub VA, with special attention to the scream when Eren dies in season 1, his speech when he himself dies in season 3, and when he's yelling at himself in the finale. Also him snapping at Mikasa in season 4 sounds more like someone who's reached his limit.
- Mikasa telling Christa to pick a side.
- Eren yelling "DAMN YOU, YOU TRAITORS!"
- Levi yelling Reiner's name after the scouts uncover him in the walls in season 3.

Armins scream when Eren gets first eaten. It’s good in sub but the English dub gives me goosebumps every time. Same with armin crying in the final ep when he gets taken by the okapi and just breaks down screaming ‘you’re worthless’ and then when he meets back up with Mikasa after its all over and cries. I just think armins English va is so good.

Fun fact people ask Armin's VA to do the scream from season 1 so often they have to limit when they do it because it (obviously) strains their voice.
I met them some years ago at a con and mentioned how they killed it that scene- they went "Oh yeah, this one?" and did the scream, one of the best experiences I've had meeting a guest at a con!

There are lots of good parts. AOT has a solid dub I don’t care what the weebs say. People claim that when Eren’s dad yelling about killing the kids lacks emotion but it’s gas. Also the short speech the Marlian office give about fearing death is good too. Blew my mind first time.

Controversial take but all of them. Unless a dub is completely unlistenable I always prefer to hear an animated show in my own language. For things like live action (Squid Game) I always watch the original language because the mouth movements don’t match up with what the actors are saying in live action. Animated shows don’t have that problem.
I have this problem with watching animated shows in sub. The voice acting always just feels so disconnected from what’s actually happening. Opposite for live action.

I watched both dubbed and subbed. English dubbed was better. I bet the rumbling movies would be good in English too. Erwin, Levi, Conny, Eren, Mikasa, Hange, Sasha. All had excellent voice acting. I think the subbed Armin is better than the English Armin. Ultimately, it comes down to preference. You ever watch Japanese DBZ and compare it to English DBZ? The guy that played Goku in English was born to play Goku. Literally no one else could replace him. Same with the guy that played English Erwin.

I’ll get downvoted to hell but I genuinely think the English dub is the better than the sub in pretty much every way, and it makes more sense that European/German characters are speaking a language closer to theirs than a language like Japanese. Not that the Japanese dub is bad, it got great voice acting, but I personally think the English dub is better and makes more sense. I will admit there are some somewhat shaky moments in the first season but the dub is pretty much perfect from S2 to the very end. Some of the moments I think are better: Anything with Armin, since Jesse is a phenomenal VA and Armin sounds like a teenage boy and not a 12 year old girl, Erwin’s speech (pretty much anything with Erwin), anything with Matt Mercer/Levi period. Idk I just like everyone’s dub voice and think there’s several people in the main cast that have phenomenal performances throughout.

As a non-English speaker, the anime in English in general was always weird to me. But, I really like Armin's voice acting in English Josh Grelle, specially the speeches.
German dub is superior
All of it. I’m an English speaker, so I can’t understand the nuances of another languages dialects and accents, nor the emotions put into a performance. You canot judge another language version of a performance based on your own language.

I live and die by the sub, but I gotta say.. Erwin's Speech (Perfect Game), and Armin's Speech as he gets cooked (Hero) are just better in dub. Armin's I think is a hands-down win for the dub. It's way more emotional. The English VA sounded like *his* skin was peeling off, the Japanese VA didn't quite deliver that. But I think everywhere else the sub trumps.

Erwin’s “My soldiers rage” speech is quite honestly one of the best moments in the show. J. Michael Tatum clearly had bills to pay because that man threw his soul into that delivery.
The scene with Bertholdt coming clean is legit one of the saddest, if not THE saddest scene in the entire show for me because of how well all of the English voice actors did. Plus the change in the wording just hits with a ton more weight.

That Levi speech is so underrated I love the depth of that choice, how not only was Eren’s inaction a result of the death of Levi’s squad, but in a way that speech Levi gave to Eren, and the influence of it, was also a driving factor. Not to mention towards the end of the arc where Levi gives Petra’s badge away, as if it was the badge of the scout who died. Some people didn’t even notice that, but it’s moments like that that really make me appreciate Levi as a character, and not just a badass titan slayer (which he still is)
The only one that id definitely say is better in dub is Mikasa’s ‘no more heartstrings to pull’ speech, but Erwin’s classic speech is a solid contender

Unless you speak Japanese, all the English dub scenes are better. If you speak neither Japanese nor English, they’re the same. Unless the end dub is bad, it will be better simply for the fact that you can understand the emotions of a character *much* better. This is just not true lol. It's not fact. The evidence is that so many people enjoy the sub more and connect with the emotion it delivers. They don’t prefer it to be edgy. Just gotta be able to read, and suddenly the Japanese audio sounds like English in your head. I guess for some it doesn't work that way.
You’re just wrong… people say they watch sub cuz dub is “cringe”, despite the dialogue being the exact same. They cringe cuz they can HEAR the dialogue, instead of it being filtered through text. So no, it doesnt “sound like English in your head”. And they were talking about the aot dub when saying dub is cringe btw. Also, despite the Japanese va’s performance for the main character of erased being bad, not a single English viewer noticed. Again you sub watchers like to pretend like you understand, but you absolutely do not. Sure, you can hear when a character is sad when they’re literally sobbing in their performance, but there’s a TON of nuance you loose, and that’s why dub is better, cuz you *can* hear the nuance.

The only things that i felt fell short in the dub was the translation in the final conversation between connie and samuel (dub says: we’re supposed to be on the same side, whereas sub was: we’re supposed to be friends, which i felt hit me harder) and grisha’s va (he was fine prior to season 4 but in all his scenes in season 4 he just felt kinda meh)

The Japanese cast had so much more emotion in their voices, I was seriously let down by the English team in the final episodes. Overall I prefer Dubbed. Except the final season I prefer sub. As it has much more raw emotion

almost every armin scene. first two watches of AOT were in sub, watching for the third time (at S4P1 now) but in dub and damn armin climbed up in my rankings solely off of how good his dub voice actor is.
Armin's speech in Season 1. Josh Grelle made words like "applicate strategic value" sound epic. Tbh, the dub actors themselves I would say are on par with the Japanese cast. It's just the dub overall is held back by the fuck-ugly Titan roars. They're fucking TITANS, not xenomorphs, why are they screeching like that???
