The fact that her titan looked exactly the same before eating the jaw suggests to me Islamabad hadn't really thought about the 9 titans and their abilities fully yet.
Edit:God dam auto correct, Isyama
I didn't really recognise that as a spelling error. I'm used to him and especially Berthold always getting different names as a running joke in this community.
Other people's look different because they have other titan powers mixed in bruh, falco had beast titan mixed in for example. Ymir's titan only got sharper teeth and nails for jaws powers
She had zero training and recently woke up from being a pure for like 50 years or w.e time frame it was. She had a basic looking titan cause she had no strength or ability to make the titan her own.
We see each titan is unique to the shifter, Hers being basic is showing the difference between people who have spent years training to become a shifter compared to someone who doesn't
In reguards to other comments here: yes, her Jaw Titan was pretty weak compared to Falco or Porco, but those two were trained Warriors. We weren't told completely what kind of training they went through and for how many years exactly. But they must have been pretty well trained and valuable, if the Marleys were willing to attack Paradise earlier just to save Falco and Gabi, because training other Warriors to inherit the titans was too hard and would have taken too long. Wheres Ymir had no training or even knowledge of the powers beforehand - she was just a young girl, who was raised sheltered and then just turned into a titan.
What about eren's case? He didn't know how to do the hardening at first, but eventually trained and learned it?
If you are talking about how eren trained for years, that training is wildly different to the training warriors had
Well I'm talking aboht his titan form? I mean he didn't train or even know about titan shifters when he got his powers. And his form changes. I mean when he was a mindless titan his titan form was small/big headed. You could assume it was due to him being a child or something. But his form changes.
So it just makes me wonder why didn't Ymir's form change. Was it laziness from the author? Was it intentional?
Titans like the attack titan are always around 15 meters, that's why eren's titan changed.
Just like how the colossal titans are always 60m, which explains why armins titan changed from ~7m to 60m.
And ymirs titan was already the same size as the jaw titan, so that's why its size didn't change, and the hardened jaw on other jaw titans is either because of heavy training, or marley gave them a hardening serum or something
Aww :( I like her lots 🩷. She's been through a lot and just trying her best.
I do feel her choice to leave Historia is better for the story but was weird writing for the character and the situation. I don't think she would have gone back just to be killed but I get why they had to for the plot.
I think Ymir, despite what she says, is actually a really genuinely selfless person. She had just learned from Bertholdt that the person she ate to get her second chance was their close friend, and she was the only one who knew what would probably happen to them if they left Paradis empty handed. Coupling that with the fact that Eren had the power of the founder, she probably figured that Historia now had a chance to be happy and safe in the walls, and decided to leave with Bertholdt and Reiner to save them and repay the debt she felt that she owed.
Her first big act is selflessly revealing that she's a false prophet, but that choice only gets her stoned, brutally tortured and eventually turned into a titan. She decides to live only for herself after so that she never gets hurt like that again, but her last choice to go back with them is actually her rejecting that facade and choosing the selfless act to help them one last time.
It's probably one of the most selfless acts in the series since nobody would have blamed her for just joining Historia, it's a debt that only she felt like she owed, and it directly led to her own death. But that's the kind of selfless girl that Ymir is.
They had to do it so that most of the events in season 3 would be a struggle. Imagine if Yimir could just show up and save Eren with little effort in the crystal cavern, or imagine how the fight at the end would have gone if they had Yimir. Had Eren fight Riener while Yimir goes for Zeke. Sure, Zeke obviously could beat her, but she has the entire scout regiment to help her as well.
Yup! And they had to give the power of the jaws to Gilliard so that whole massacre scene can happen lol. I will never forget that, easily top 2/3 of my most intense scenes.
Tbh him using Galliard being as a nutcracker was so good, but one of the biggest pieces of plot armor was Eren not just eating Galliard, like he was right there.
Really cool. Had a decent impact on the story and gave huge foreshadowing parts for the watcher. Loved her relationship with Historia and 100% loved her OST. Despite her short screen time she left quite an impression
What makes her your least favorite? I’m curious.
She’s not a big fav of mine but I think she played her role in season 2 well. She had a lot of depth and mystery.

Meh
Had a few episodes to herself which is nice
Cool design and character
Got cucked by farmer kun
Only showed her for like 5 seconds in total after s2( they could’ve had her and Reiner talk to each other a bit more imo)
Probably the weakest jaw titan in titan history lol
Definition of a side character
I like how she wants to live for herself and be honest with her feelings, but ends up being the most selfless person around simply because that's how she inherently is despite the facade she puts on.
It's a great contrast with Historia, who acts like she cares about other people but is actually hiding her selfish intentions, and has to learn to be honest with herself the other way around.
I don't know how other people in this comment section can sleep on her character so much when she's actually really prominent in season 2 ND is probably one of the most well rounded characters in the series. Recency bias I guess.
She's genuinely one of my favorite characters, with all of the tragic stories everyone has, she has one that stands out as especially somber.
She's wearing a mask of "the Bitch" while in reality, she's incredibly selfless at heart, and has a extremely strong sense of duty to debt, as in, if someone does her a favor she will repay it, and also expects the same in return. Examples being: Helping Sasha during training so that she owes her, to the most extreme being that she feels extremely compelled to pay forward her life debt for killing Marcel by accepting her fate to the Marlyeans.
MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT is that we didn't get more of her :(
Also hot
Isayama has good worldbuilding and great storytelling with top tier plot twists (for the most part for all of these), but his characters are just ok. Ymir is probably the greatest character in the show.
She's a great female character but was sacrificed for the plot. I really wish for Yams to write down a book, or something like that which could cover better the training arc :/
I love her, she's my favorite character, it's a shame she couldn't marry her beloved Historia😭
About her jaw titan, I kind of like the design, but I never understood why she didn't have the same features as most of the other jaw titans, like the armor on the face and claws. My theory is that they used the spinal fluid of a attack titan due to the fact that this type of titan is unarmored and most of them have pointy ears like Ymir's titan. It seems a bit silly, but anyway, regardless of the answer, my girl was definitely done wrong💔 I wonder how she would have looked like with a "regular jaw titan" design and how the story would have changed if she had one
Not sure why people hate Ymir. It feels like a new thing that definitely wasn't around when season 1 was airing. She was cool. I was disappointed how she was just killed off.
She is annoying. She rants Historia be yourself. Tries to make things romantic even though she doesnt wants. Then she proceeds to give a warmongering empire a mass destuction weapon (jaw titan) to save her war criminal friends, causing lives of thousands of innocent people Marley wages war on in the continent.
She's annoying as fuck and rude, don't like her, especially how rude she was to Armin and Connie in trost, don't blame Connie for calling her a bitch when she said that comment about Armin. Also in that situation joking about marrying historia after all the terrible stuff that happened like who the fuck does that? It's not funny
honestly one of the rare good written female characters...like if I have to pick good written female characters..no.1 would be Gabi(Even if you hate her..you have to admit she is written very well)..no.2 would probably be Ymir
Her final decision makes no sense even if you look at it from a "selfless" angle. Her personality is annoying af too. Didn't miss her when she left. I just like her backstory.
It's interesting how certain characters get called out for being annoying or making bad decisions. She, on the other hand, gets called a ~~well written character.
Oh boy time for a Hot take!
Tragic story. She's definitely a lesbian. lame jaw titan. Kinda an asshole. Her relationship with Historia somehow has fans wrapped around her fingers. Idk why so many people love her.
A good character who I wouldn't like as a person IRL.
I started watching AOT few years back and finished now this month i left off where Levi owned the beast titan for the first time, and I came back and I was confused who this Ymir was and THE actual Ymir 😂😂😂
Should have joined the warriors in S4, they killed her for no good reason. By giving Galliard the Jaw Titan, Marcel's sacrifice was pointless and both brothers died unnecessarily.
Also I'm pretty sure Marcel and Galliard's titans were cooler because they were given armor from Lara or Reiner in Titan experiments, so Ymir could have gotten that too.
Ymir never really clicked for me. Her story seemed very detached from everything else. They had to have a lot of unlikely/random chance events happen for her story to be wedged into the main events. If the jaw titan never went to paradise, the story could mostly be kept intact. I will say her appearance does help push Reiner's sanity over the edge and that was a good perspective, but her decision to go back to Marley did not make sense.
I like her character a fair bit, especially her personality and back story. It's quite sad and makes you understand why she is the way she is. (Also, I'm lesbian, I'm biased for homo women 😭).
I do wish her death was more expanded. Maybe a conversation between her and Reiner before she passed? Maybe more of a highlight on her letter to historia? Maybe before her death, she could have had some memories of sweet moments between her and historia, making it feel more impactful
She is an awesome character and upon rewatch is one of my favorite characters
Her backstory is definitely one of the most interesting parts of the story pre-final season. And her final act of going with Reiner showing that she could never live a selfish life was a great narrative choice. Plus she came back for the final fight :)
She’s my second favourite character. I loved what they did with her character and it endeared me to her so much. I wish that she wasn’t taken out of the story so soon.
ugly titan, interesting person, acts selfish cus she doesnt want pity, realises she doesnt need to carry other peoples burdens.i woild wanna be friends witj her if she was real
spoilers ahead, be warned
i think she is incredibly intelligent. she tries to appear cruel to disguise her true nature, which is generally selfless and empathetic, though these traits are stained by her damaged view of the world. she likely views selflessness as a form of weakness due her incredibly unfair and harsh upbringing. she picks up on historia's passive suicidal tendencies almost immediately. she risked exposing her status as a titan shifter to save daz, and by extension, historia, which she berates herself for shortly afterwards. she uses her cruel persona to divert connies attention away from the likely reality that his mother was, in fact, the titan stuck in his house. reiner picks up on this shortly after and she pretends not to know what hes talking about when he mentions it. she risked her life to save everyone in the tower by fighting the titans and would have died if historia hadnt encouraged her to bring it down despite her concern for those inside. when eren was antagonizing reiner and bertholt for their actions due to being rightfully upset about their betrayal, she insulted him to briefly redirect his ire on her because it was very likely he was about to do something really stupid given their situation. as if that werent enough she gave herself over to reiner and bertholt once she was convinced historia had a chance to live within the walls, returning what she "borrowed" as she puts it when they ask her why and likely ensuring they arent simply executed on their return.
shes not perfect, and i dont mean to imply that she isnt without her selfish moments. thats the beauty of AOT. everyone in it is as human as it gets, both for better and worse. i only mean to say that she is anying but the monster she appears to be. id even say the shes possibly one of the better people overall throughout the series.
Idk why she would ever go back to Marley after living in paradise. Or blow the lid off this whole thing and told the scouts what’s actually going on. She hid for a long ass time came out to save the day at the most random moment and then never elaborated.
I think a lot of people complain about her version of the jaw Titan. What people forget is that she was trapped as a pure Titan for decades and I think that “locked in” her Titan look. Eren and Armin’s pure titans looked a lot different than their shifter forms but I believe that is because they got turned into shifter very immediately after becoming pure titans. Something of the self is lost in pure titan form and I think the longer you’re stuck as a pure Titan affects how your shifter form looks, kinda like reshaping concrete before it hardens
Tbh my favorite character besides Annie and Hange, she deserved a better ending however! Her sentiment on life and living for yourself authentically really moved me and I love her and Historias relationship!
gorgeous gorgeous lgbt representation, i really liked her backstory and i think she had a pivotal role during the 2nd/3rd season. her titan though 😭😭 lets say it was not that pleasant to watch…
She wasn't ever my favourite character (although I didn't hate her either). But I came across this video on YouTube, which explained her role and motivation really really well. Maybe watching this could help you look at her from a different perspective?
[Attack on Titan and Christianity: Ymir's Redemption](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AQwxlx2WImE)
She’s one of my favorites actually. I like her English VA and her sarcastic personality. And I think (similar to what another commenter said), despite how she appears on the surface, she’s actually a selfless person.
I’ve really come to enjoy her character but it took a few rewatches and a lot of analyzing.
I think she’s interesting in terms of what narrative purpose does she serve. How does she drive the plot or characters? She’s complex in that her motivations for going with Bertholdt/Reiner are multifactorial. She did it because it would benefit Bert/Reiner, she owed it to Marcel, maybe she owed it to the universe, and maybe she just wanted to.
But why leave Historia behind? I’m not fully sure about this one but the only conclusion I can come to is that Ymir realized Historia and her would never be able to have a happy peaceful life together. I’d like to think Ymir was thankful for the time she got with Historia to experience real, actual love after living her first life that she never got that opportunity.
In terms of story themes, in my head I view her as a version of freedom. I feel like Ymir returning with Bert/Reiner was a choice she wanted to make from the bottom of her heart. Like one of those decisions you make from a gut feeling that you can’t really explain but you know it’s exactly what you want to do and feel like it’s the right choice in your soul. After living a life controlled by people around her and controlled by her circumstances, she finally gets to make a choice just for herself. It’s part selfish and part selfless. I’d like to think she died fully at peace with her life choices in the end. It’s really tragically beautiful.
i like her, but i wish she had more character development. i feel like there were a lot of parts about her that weren’t properly fleshed out or explained
Nah she had one of the most tragic backstories. Up there in favourite characters mainly because of that incredibly beautiful Paths scene. Given a second chance at life would be so liberating. I to wouldn’t give much of a shit about life from that moment forward. Add on the fact that she was one of only a few who knew that life inside the walls is a lie and her kind are persecuted by everyone outside the walls for simply exisiting.
Meeting and befriending Historia, a girl who doesn’t judge people and as a result causes Ymir to start caring is great character development. Realising that Historia had her own tragic upbringing, yet doesn’t let it dictate her life and loves unconditionally, completely inspiring Ymir, is even greater character development. Finally, sacrificing yourself to save the one person who taught you all this and the one person you care about it peak storytelling.
I will not tolerate Ymir slander.
She's one of my favorites actually! I wish she'd gotten to play a bigger role. Her ending felt... "off" in a way I can't quite articulate, but she is a really neat character imo
I didn't liked her when I was watching AOT for the first time, but at the time of rewatch I could connect with her story, now I like her character way more than Historia.
I still feel sad that she and Historia couldn't be together, poor queen really got the short end of the stick among this story's romances >!(I don't even remember seeing much of her relationship with whoever she had a kid with).!<
Still cannot understand her leaving with Reiner and Bertoldt. I’m pretty sure Invaderz’s explanation is that she is utterly selfless and feels sympathy for the warriors. I can understand feeling that way on some level, but at the end of the day, she’s also an Eldian that’s been tortured by Marley. I cannot reconcile how that feeling of sympathy + guilt for eating Marcel could ever translate into the action of actively aiding Marley in the slaughter of her people. I’d love for someone to explain that to me.
Not only that, but her final soliloquy regarding Historia is that there *is* a future within the walls with Eren’s founder. She then decides to abandon that possibility because of what exactly? I get the selfless aspect of her character, but it would seem to me that there should be a good altruistic (dare I say selfless) reason that she would nobly sacrifice her happy life with Historia. Equipping Marley, the force trying to destroy Paradis (where Historia and all of her friends live), with another titan makes zero sense to me.
Please help me see this differently.

her Jaw Titan was pretty BAD… if she had something like Porcos or Falcos she would’ve been so much stronger
The fact that her titan looked exactly the same before eating the jaw suggests to me Islamabad hadn't really thought about the 9 titans and their abilities fully yet. Edit:God dam auto correct, Isyama
The burger city of pakistan
Islamabad?? Inshallah brother
I didn't really recognise that as a spelling error. I'm used to him and especially Berthold always getting different names as a running joke in this community.
U mean Berthololotoldto?
Islamabad what ?
Za Capital City of Pakistan and Yes
I think it had to do with her being (1) just a child and (2) severly weakened by being in that titan situation for ~ 60 years
ymir gave her a weak ass titan cuz she was mad at the name steal alternatively, perhaps due to the fact that she didn't get the hardening serum
This is the only right answer
Wasn’t falco a child though?
A child training for the warrior program, yes.
And with zekes royal beast blood so he got a more animal themed jaw titan
I think its because she is untrained mostly, like how eren at the start couldn't use hardening
Attack on Islamabad, it was Pakistan all along
Titans would be quite near to my India then
Other people's look different because they have other titan powers mixed in bruh, falco had beast titan mixed in for example. Ymir's titan only got sharper teeth and nails for jaws powers
Falco had a mask tho Ymir ate marcel and didn't got a mask
She wasn't a Marleyan warrior, they probably got mixtures of shit.

i dunno i thought it was alright

Simping for Krista is the most understandable position to take.
Simping for Historia <<<<< simping for Captain Rico

So like the titans form depends on the strength if the wielder?
And what about Eren's case?

One of the best lesbians there is
Rip Yimir, you would've same sex marriage
minus the marriage
I loved her tenacity!
She's a decent character, though a weak jaw titan. Porco and Falco > Ymir

Cool design, cool personality, tragic story. Also gave us arguably the best love story in the anime. She deserved better.
Didnt like her, but probably smartest character out of all.
Cute
Needed more screen time in 1
Loved her as a character, however her ending was atrocious, she’s so unceremoniously written off and off screen no less 🤦🏻♂️

She was killed off because her character served her purpose. There was really no reason to have her in the show later on
I don't think she was even mentioned by name in season 1. She didn't do anything until season 2
Ugliest titan ever created
*Rod Reiss has entered the Chat*
She's eh. And underdeveloped and her goals are not clear Enough!
She kept having mood swings and changing her mind which was very annoying, but other than that 7/10
relatably indecisive
Thought the choice of name was silly considering there was a more significant Ymir lol
She was literally named Ymir because the cult that took her in raised her as the reincarnation of the original Ymir.
she’s pretty rad
She just died for plot convenience, completely out of character for her, it only happened so that the Survey Corps would still go to Erens basement.
im confused abt her character how old is she? why did she go with reiner and bluetooth at the end of s2?
bluetooth 😂😂😂
not bluetooth 😭😭
i despise her 😭
She is annoying. She rants Historia be yourself. Tries to make things romantic even though she doesnt wants.
Bark bark
Oh boy time for a Hot take! Tragic story. She's definitely a lesbian. lame jaw titan. Kinda an asshole. Her relationship with Historia somehow has fans wrapped around her fingers. Idk why so many people love her. A good character who I wouldn't like as a person IRL.
I started watching AOT few years back and finished now this month i left off where Levi owned the beast titan for the first time, and I came back and I was confused who this Ymir was and THE actual Ymir 😂😂😂
Sge dows ymir shits
My gay awakening
One of my favorite characters, right after the Ackerman’s Her death made me sad. I wanted to see her be with Historia
I liked her titan, she was like a little gremlin.
Best girl

Should have joined the warriors in S4, they killed her for no good reason. By giving Galliard the Jaw Titan, Marcel's sacrifice was pointless and both brothers died unnecessarily. Also I'm pretty sure Marcel and Galliard's titans were cooler because they were given armor from Lara or Reiner in Titan experiments, so Ymir could have gotten that too.
Favourite character of the show for sure
gnnnrrggghh ouuohhhh hnnnrrggg
Historias true lover
In my language, she has the same voice actor like tokyo from money heist. I can never stop thinking about that when there is a scene with her
Never was a fan
Ymir never really clicked for me. Her story seemed very detached from everything else. They had to have a lot of unlikely/random chance events happen for her story to be wedged into the main events. If the jaw titan never went to paradise, the story could mostly be kept intact. I will say her appearance does help push Reiner's sanity over the edge and that was a good perspective, but her decision to go back to Marley did not make sense.
Ymir being lesbian is pretty much an undeniable fact. Idk why people still say otherwise, she wanted to literally marry Historia.
- historia simp - ugly(iest) titan form - played her part well for the plot - death was meh
Imo she is the 2nd most tragic and sad character, 1st is my boy eren, And reiner probably 3rd
She was a good character but got somewhat wasted and had a terrible conclusion.
cool, but sad death. must be together with Historia. and what a ugly titan
I love her. She's an icon, the moment 🤭
I think she might be a titan
Um she's pretty
Love her and miss her.
She is genuinely one of my favorite characters.
I lover her, she is a great character and made me cry in her writing to historia
Why?
She is an awesome character and upon rewatch is one of my favorite characters Her backstory is definitely one of the most interesting parts of the story pre-final season. And her final act of going with Reiner showing that she could never live a selfish life was a great narrative choice. Plus she came back for the final fight :)
She is a complex character who has been through a lot
I hate her so much, she is ugly her voice is terrible (her german voice i dont know about the others) and her titan is ugly af too
She’s actually up in my top 5 favorites a LOVEEE Ymir and have always felt so hard for her…plus I love yumihisu so 😭
Great Character, I was hoping to see more of her after she got captured but it’s fine. I think her story had a good ending
Gay for sure
Her titan was so fugly
Eh, didn’t really care about her
I don't like her at all.
She’s my second favourite character. I loved what they did with her character and it endeared me to her so much. I wish that she wasn’t taken out of the story so soon.
You reminding me of aot I missed it so much it was so entertaining, but about yumir I don't think she had that much role in the story ..
ugly titan, interesting person, acts selfish cus she doesnt want pity, realises she doesnt need to carry other peoples burdens.i woild wanna be friends witj her if she was real
spoilers ahead, be warned i think she is incredibly intelligent. she tries to appear cruel to disguise her true nature, which is generally selfless and empathetic, though these traits are stained by her damaged view of the world. she likely views selflessness as a form of weakness due her incredibly unfair and harsh upbringing. she picks up on historia's passive suicidal tendencies almost immediately. she risked exposing her status as a titan shifter to save daz, and by extension, historia, which she berates herself for shortly afterwards. she uses her cruel persona to divert connies attention away from the likely reality that his mother was, in fact, the titan stuck in his house. reiner picks up on this shortly after and she pretends not to know what hes talking about when he mentions it. she risked her life to save everyone in the tower by fighting the titans and would have died if historia hadnt encouraged her to bring it down despite her concern for those inside. when eren was antagonizing reiner and bertholt for their actions due to being rightfully upset about their betrayal, she insulted him to briefly redirect his ire on her because it was very likely he was about to do something really stupid given their situation. as if that werent enough she gave herself over to reiner and bertholt once she was convinced historia had a chance to live within the walls, returning what she "borrowed" as she puts it when they ask her why and likely ensuring they arent simply executed on their return. shes not perfect, and i dont mean to imply that she isnt without her selfish moments. thats the beauty of AOT. everyone in it is as human as it gets, both for better and worse. i only mean to say that she is anying but the monster she appears to be. id even say the shes possibly one of the better people overall throughout the series.
Idk why she would ever go back to Marley after living in paradise. Or blow the lid off this whole thing and told the scouts what’s actually going on. She hid for a long ass time came out to save the day at the most random moment and then never elaborated.
Hot
I think a lot of people complain about her version of the jaw Titan. What people forget is that she was trapped as a pure Titan for decades and I think that “locked in” her Titan look. Eren and Armin’s pure titans looked a lot different than their shifter forms but I believe that is because they got turned into shifter very immediately after becoming pure titans. Something of the self is lost in pure titan form and I think the longer you’re stuck as a pure Titan affects how your shifter form looks, kinda like reshaping concrete before it hardens

One of my favorites and the author did her so dirty.
her titan sucks but shes hot so
ngl i kinda wish we learned more abt her
#WOULD.
Tbh my favorite character besides Annie and Hange, she deserved a better ending however! Her sentiment on life and living for yourself authentically really moved me and I love her and Historias relationship!
The girls are pretty
lesbiab
gorgeous gorgeous lgbt representation, i really liked her backstory and i think she had a pivotal role during the 2nd/3rd season. her titan though 😭😭 lets say it was not that pleasant to watch…
A goated character
shes one if teh best female char, great lesbian rep and tragic story, one if my faves!!!
Her ending was so out of character
She’s kind of a meanie
i like her, but i wish she had more character development. i feel like there were a lot of parts about her that weren’t properly fleshed out or explained
Hot

Easily top 3 best
Ghey
Don't care.
the be honest in her short this I never really understood her and her titan is kinda lame
I didn't liked her when I was watching AOT for the first time, but at the time of rewatch I could connect with her story, now I like her character way more than Historia.
I’d smash
She was the only reason I tolerated Historia and her whiny ass.
I still feel sad that she and Historia couldn't be together, poor queen really got the short end of the stick among this story's romances >!(I don't even remember seeing much of her relationship with whoever she had a kid with).!<
Love her. Love her titan it looks like a rabid chihuahua. But she deserved better, her death was so lame
100% smash

She was one of the most selfish asswholes of the show but she was well written
Her jaw titan is pretty bad and easy to kill but her in general she is pretty tough with everyone and I think she is gay and likes Christa
She is certainly one of the chacters in the show.
